I fail to see the problem.

Guys fizz over clapped-out GSX and FXR P.O.S. that I wouldn't cross the road to look at - yet nobody gets excited about that.

The sporty would make a good street-fighter project for somebody IMHO.

Now come on dog no need to get up tight, have another Crawfords farm and lighten up man. You gotta see the funny side though don't ya. If it was a Gixer or a Triumph or a BMW I would have still posted it..Any Idea what brand the can is ? And is it worth $6000 in it's state?

IF it was a 1200 (factory mind, not a tired 883 kitted up) then hell yeah, well worth $6,000!!

FS, I got $6,500 for my '81 ironhead not that long ago!!

so it would cost more than $11 to dump it. Just saying.

    I think its got potential.
Lol...yeah, I guess there's a bit of weight there... hmmm, potential yes....but for what??!

Mind you, every time I see this: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Mo...-163574673.htm it makes me squirm uneasily! If you had all the stock bits, wouldn't you put it back to stock? It would be worth a hell of a lot more standard and he would easily get what he's asking, even though its a Pro Link so not worth so much as earlier models - this things been for sale for quite a few months now, when I first saw it the asking price was $8500 or $9000 from memory.

The can is a Vance & Hines, so pretty good stuff - maybe the best part on it?

Ad says its a 1203cc but was originally an 1986 1100 Liberty Edition Sportster (? whatever that is....buggered if I know) with 2002 Buell X1 running gear.......but who would really know?
Biggest problem I see with it is that it is an unfinished and very narrowly focused project - that kind of thing always ends up costing way more to finish than expected and therefore would have to be bloody cheap to be attractive. There's plenty of nice Sportsters on TM for similar or not much more $$$ that haven't been f*cked around with (or at least not that much)....still, each to his own I guess

Yeah Doggie but I bet it had foot pegs, lights, brakes, a clutch of some sorts, and a decent seat on it. and a primary drive cover. For fuks sake mate. The only thing going for this Harley is the engine. I presume it goes, I would be embarrassed to have my picture taken with this thing. ha ha it's a shit heap and certainly not your average run of the mill Harley owner that takes pride in his ride mate now is it Doggie..

we live in a land when a Honda C50 from 1972 is worth nearly three grand, so anything is possible. Good luck to him I say

Ive had that on my watchlist for a while, only because Ive always loved them, and Ive seen some awesome specials: and Spondon still make a frame for them: which from memory uses the original swingarm. CBR1000 front end, minimalist Spondon bodywork = bringing the awesome....

beyond my skills and budget though

Yeah but he's not advertising it as a 'nice Sportster that's not been f*cked around with' - it's plain to see it's a project, just like a heap of other bikes on TM and everybody knows projects always burn your wallet budget-wise.

Just for interest sake scroll through Hot Rods on TM and you will see the car equal to that bike.

And you're right, each to their own - one mans pile'o'shit is another mans dream project, regardless of what make/condition it is in.

Sure, there are parts missing - parts that on TM could be under $500, in fact I know where I could get all bar the seat for $300 or so, projects are often built using 'bargain' stuff that sometimes may need adapting.

And you're mostly right about my ironhead but it was only 1,000cc, old-skool engine, 4-speed, wooden brakes, flexi-frame, a generator, no indicators, no instruments except the speedo etc etc.

This bike on the other hand has a lot more going for - for a guy that realises it IS a project - and everybody can see that's what it is, right?.
In my eyes I see the basis for a Harley street-fighter type project, for the rest of you out there - ???

SNAP! I had exactly the same plan spinning around in the back of my mind! The frame kit is GBP3700 and comes with an aluminium gull arm swing arm and Ohlins rear shock as well as a hand beaten ali tank. You have to buy exhaust, forks/triple clamps (may as well go with Ohlins because by this stage as your broke anyway, lol) tail piece/seat assy and wheels. No doubt there will be a few other bits and pieces on top of that to really get the bank manager's stress levels up there, but you'd end up with an awesome and unique bike.

I have an inappropriate trouser reaction to that bike.

    OK so the budget is:

    CBX say $8000.
Spondon frame and swingarm rear shock and tank landed say $11000

CBR1000 front end complete say $2000.

Wheels: say $2k? or if using secondhand Honda say $1k.

    Tyres $600

seat unit and miscellaneous bits say $2000

brakes: CBR1000 included, Brembo add $3000

    Ohlins forks another $6000.

less CBX parts sold on tardme/ebay, say $2000

    fuck up factor/contingency: $2500

Say minimum $25k all up, with the sky being the limit.

(and I havent allowed for pipes or dyno or any engine work) or a new wiring loom come to think of it.

Question: is it cooler than an stock 1098 for the same money? Subjective answer but in my eyes: Shit yeah!

A girlfriend once asked " Why is it you seem to prefer to race, than spend time with me ?"
The answer was simple ! "I'll prolly get bored with racing too, once i've nailed it !"
