Steering Stem bolt - Is this a load bearing component???

    Hi guys,

I'm trying to install my RX65 on my new CBR400 NC23 and I got hold of a stem mount but I realised that the top of my Stem nut doesn't come off so I"ll need to remove it and put a new one with a removable top on it.

Now I was about to undo the nut and I thoought to myself "is this going to drop the front of the bike?"

So can anyone tell me if I need to jack up the bike to remove this nut or can I remove this without risking damage to the bike without supporting the bike in some other way.

    Cheers.

No there will be another nut under the top clamp that holds your lower fork clamp and stem assembly in.

Funny you say that as today i had to remove mine to fit a bit of bling (see thread) fucken thing felt like it was welded on so in the end rode it damperless down to bike shop and got them to take it off with the compressor driven spanner.

You should NEVER use a "spanner" to loosen a big top triple-clamp nut EVER!!!
You risk slipping on the hex head, rooting the hex and gouging whatever the spanner hits after slipping with heaps of load on. Oh..and smashing your hand as well!
Always use a 6 sided(single hex) half inch drive socket of the correct sizing with a long powerbar (preferably Snap-on)

Thanks for the advice. Yeah it was pretty hard to undo but got a half inch drive socket with a 2 feet long powerbar (is that what they are called?) and got it undone.

It turned out that my stem was really large though (like 25mm inner diameter or larger) and I ended up drilling a hole on the top triple clamp nut and bolted the radar detector mount to the hole.

It's looking pretty neat now will post pics when I can along with a thread about my new bike but too busy riding now to take pictures
