I was faced with a similar dilemma recently. With interest rates going the way they were we had to get out of Auckland (which is a shame as I have a lot of friends there that I can't ride with any more ).

I then looked at various other bits of NZ. I considered Nelson until I saw the house prices. Same as Auckland so the question then was "Can I earn more in Nelson than in Auckland?" answer was not a hope in hell. Since earning half the salary and paying more mortgage would be a dumbarsed move I found myself looking at Timaru, Oamaru and Invercargill. Looked for work in those centres and ended up here.

No regrets. Catlins on my doorstep. Teretonga raceway. Oreti Beach. Remarkables Ski fields 2 hours drive. Bluff oysters. One of the fastest velodrome tracks in the southern hemisphere. I just need to persuade all my Auckland mates to move down here now.

Nelson-mind you the places you holiday in seem great to visit.

Queenstown-but too pricey in town and cold in winter.

New Plymouth-great sea and coastal vistas, only short drive to Dorkland.

    Hawkes Bay-summer,wine and summer.

Palmerston North-except when cold and wet during days off, summer is cool.

If accommodation is provided - go to the most expensive place. If you have to provide your own - go to the cheapest place.McJim has the idea.

I am happy in the Waikato....but wouldn't live in Hamilton.Huntly was ultra cheap, and it's practically a suburb of both Hamilton and Auckland.Believe it or not I went to live on Waiheke Island because it was very cheap....but you wouldn't live there now for that reason.

    Riviera of the South.
    No doubt.

No homies, grid lock, traffic lights, residential burglaries, 'gansta-wankas' or any other urban twat flotsam and jetsom.

But it CAN be bloody cold.

Lived there, went to school there.

Might as well be at Invercargill except you have more wasps, more wierdos, more 'wannabe' white supremists and a shit-load of other negatives we don't have in the deep south.

We have cold weather at times and?? and??? and? - bugger, that's it, cold weather.

Mouth of the Big River....The Mighty Clutha River.

As for being cold down here - it's not even as cold as London in the Winter - certainly holds no fear for me coming from Glasgow. The log burner is crackling away happily - the cat is cooking herself in front of it. The house is an '80s build with good insulation, underfloor, roof and wall cavity.

    No problem.
