Cary, I suggest we both have a look down the track, the first 10kms is fun and well clear of rivers etc.

excuse my deeply rooted ignorance - but does Fischers Track come out on Kurua Rd?

Presumably it would be an easy sub 60 minute run from Ohakune up to the start of the 42nd Travers (Kapoors Rd???)

    cheers

Yes & yes. May be better to meet near there rather than you coming all the way to taupo?

Theres a nice motor camp with decent cabins in Ohakune (Thurs night) and there is some great gravel south of Ohakune that I could explore on the way up.

There is a really nice place in Raetihi where we stayed over the weekend:

    Snowy Waters Lodge www.snowywaterslodge.co.nz

Backpackers - warm and friendly, $25 a night.

If you want gravel, take the Turakina Valley or Whangaehu Valleys, off SH3 heading to Wanganui. Both are great, Whangaehu has slightly more sealed bits, and both come out on Waiouru to Ohakune highway.
Alternatively the road thru Jerusalem and Pipiriki heading up from Wanganui to Raetihi is kinda fun and scenic too. Have fun, see you at Kapoors Rd .

    Friday night!

Ok you lot, seeing as Mike is whinging about friday night bookings I'm taking the plunge and booking at Awakino.
I had a quick search for motels in Mokau, should we be short and there are certainly a couple of options if Awakino gets too crowded.

I booked at Awakino this morn, 7 staying in house so far Friday night, bring ya sleeping bags. I'll keep an eye on the weather for 42 Traverse as well, would still be keen depending on track condition. Crisis, are you still coming thru Taupo?

Thats still the plan, even if the 42 doesn't come off there are lots of roads in the area I want to explore.

Seems as if socialites convinced me today to join this trip (wasn't too difficult ...) - only pain is that I won't be able to leave Fri. Anyone thinking of hurtling down from Aucks on Saturday morning crack o' dawn sort of thing to make the Sat morning meetup in ... wherever it will be?

    Lemme know?

For now we are looking at getting away from Awakino at around 8.45am. But it would be easy to meet you maybe two hours later not too far down the road.
