Why you don't use a silicone polish

Hey guys just a little heads up. Silicone is an apsolute shit of a stuff to get rid of from plastics.Total NIGHTMARE if its been used over a number of years.Normal removal surface prep doesn't seem to work.
I'd suggest avoiding any polish with silicone in it

I use a KITTEN branded silicone based polish on my wheels as it seems to lift the road and chain spooge form the wheels better than kerosine and leaves my wheels all shiny and clean without worrying about the kero eating into my tyres. i dont use it on the tank or plastics but for the wheels it seems so far better than anything i've tried. dont planb on getting my wheels repainted so should be fine but once silicone has touched anything that needs to be repainted all i can say is - GOOD LUCK

Sort of along the same vein... some people used to use silicon brake fluid because it 'Doesn't harm paint'. Ah huh.... every tried to repaint something that has had silicon brake fluid on it? Sure it doesn't generally hurt the paint as quickly as a glycol based fluid, but sheeeeet, it's a pain to paint over anywhere that's ever been in contact with it.

Not just on the paint either, I remember about 35 years ago when a mate borrowed one of my H2s and when he bought it back he thought he would clean my race one too, including armoralling the seat......doh!! H2s are hard enough to hang on to at the best of times, but with a super slippery seat..........fark

Rode a thunderace (briefly) once that some bored salesman had decided to spray the tyres with some spray on protector stuff,out the shop gassed it up to get across into the outta town lane and wham bang thank you mam ended up on my arse.

hahaha.... I remember the first time I used armoral on my waterbottle seat... it looked nice but jeans didn't wanna hang on when I gassed it up.

I was at the bike museum just out west of Brisbane the other weekend with some mates and spotted a lovely blue '72 H2 (mach IIII) and they also had a white '68 H1 (mach III) like my old one (although mine was black with silver black race stripes) and it took me back a bit, then I remembered how neutral was at the bottom on those things..... hahahaha what a beast

Probably to paint a fairing? Oil/Silicone + Fresh paint = Shit paint job.

Nah silicone spay is great. We used to fire it under the gaurds on our trail bikes before wewent to riverhead, made it easier to get the crap off. Not a likely place for a repaint though

strange too ..all ways used MEK too clean all panel work proir to spraying, and fuck no silicone anywhere near the booth, floats in air and yup...paint job fucked due to it applying its self to panels too..however always prep with thinners first ..

Yes silicon is death to paint, the best and only product to get it off with is acetone

I've found that not much resists Toluol, including the rags if you aren't careful, and mixing jugs.

Exactly what plastics are you trying to paint Frosty? Are they solvent sensitive or not? There are several options that could be used to get rid of that crap (silicone). It just depends on what you're trying to do.
