Red face Can anyone help with a name?

    Hi all,
Hope someone can help with my dilemma...

When I was a kid maybe around 8 - 12 years old (in the mid - late 70's) I saw a movie that has bugged me for years because I can't remember the name of it, and I'd like to see it again.

Here are the only details I remember:

    * It was either a TV documentary or a Movie - I think it was shown in 2 parts.
    * It was a "round the world" type adventure story.
    * I only remember 1 guy (and he may have been an Aussie) - he may have travelled with others along the way.
    * At one point he had a yacht that caught fire and he sat on the beach at night watching it burn to the waterline - the next day they went out to where it had sunk to collect some opals (I think) from the wreck.
*I think he travelled by different means and the yacht was only part of it.
    * He may have travelled in some remote areas where the vehicle they were in kept getting stuck in thigh high mud...

As I said, I can't remember much about it, but it's bugged me for years. I've tried googling all sorts of different things, but can't find any reference to it.

Fingers crossed that someone else saw it and has a better memory than me...

Was this also the one where they explored an old WWII US base on some Pacific Island, collected copper wire and sold it for cash later?

    Yes, Yes, Yes...
The island and WWII bits ring bells for me as well...

I think we watched it on TV in 2 parts... I wonder if TVNZ would have any record? I'll send them an email and see what happens...

In the mean time... Put your thinking caps on!

    The Dove (1974)
    Director: Charles Jarrott

The five-year, round-the-world voyage of teenage Californian yachtsman ('I just had to get out and see what else was going on') Robin Lee Graham, produced by Gregory Peck as a chaste romance in picturesque locations for the family film market. Boring as hell, with even cinematographer Sven Nykvist's invention sorely taxed by the tedious succession of seascapes.

    Cast & crewDirector: Charles Jarrott
    Producer: Gregory Peck

Cast: Joseph Bottoms, Deborah Raffin, John McLiam, Dabney Coleman, John Meillon, Colby Chester full cast

    Genre(s): Action/Adventure

    Duration: 104 mins
