Highly recommended reading is "The Mother Tongue" by Bill Bryson which details the history and epistemology of our wonderfully obtuse and lyrical language.
I've avoided his books ever since I read in A Short History of Nearly Everything that apparently New Zealand is on a par with the likes of the USA, Russia and France in dumping nuclear waste into the oceans.

Fair enough but I read a fair bit of science so approached the Short History with a cynical grin only to find it fade very quickly. He grasped and explained very complex issues in plain English and apart from the odd small detail, this is an extremely good book.
