    I'm no victim, I'm a survivor

Now this women has the right attitude to life, after having such a horrific event happen to her. With this kind of attitude, life will throw all sorts at her but if she can make it through this she can make it through anything.

Agreed - the victim mentality we nurture in NZ gives me the spits......to me its just an excuse to do nothing....."I can't (choose whatever) - coz I'm a victim...." ngngngnrrrrrrr. We need more of this lady's attitude - be a survivor! Good for her!

"Victim" really is a disgusting word.
It insinuates weakness, and its a word media love to bandy about and label people with.

We may nurture the victim mentality on small scales, but however I dont believe we nurture victims in this country.
Despite that, it has not stopped an army of ordinary everyday kiwi battlers to push for change.

Sadly there are a great many survivors out there sharing this land, and thats why you will note a strong focus on Law and Order this election.

    Go the Survivors.
I hope this young lady has good support for the future, what an awful ordeal to walk forward into the future with, onwards and upwards, go girl.

After almost a year in custody, Julian Heath Edgecombe has been found not guilty of eight counts relating to alleged sex offences.

He was arrested in November last year, about a day after a woman he knew ran into the reception area at the Christchurch police station to complain that he had raped her and had tried to hang her from a door with telephone cable.

A jury in the High Court in Christchurch yesterday found him not guilty of abducting the woman for the purpose of sex, sexually violating her twice, two charges of attempting to murder her by strangling her, and one of attempting to hang her, and two of assaulting her, using a telephone cord as a weapon.

They found him guilty on only the ninth charge, of fraudulently using the victim's bank card.

The court had been told he used it to withdraw money from her account while he was on the run, knowing that she would make accusations against him. The pair had known each other's personal identification numbers.

Edgecombe, a 29-year-old unemployed man, was remanded on bail by Justice Young for sentence on that charge in three weeks.

His Honour asked for a probation report, but, because the amount was small, and most of the money was recovered, no reparation report was sought.

The woman gave evidence that she had been tied up, strangled, sexually violated, and hung by the neck with the phone cable.

Edgecombe said that strangulation was something that they tried sometimes when they had sex, but denied hanging her with the cable.

The granting of bail does not mean he has walked free after his trial.

Defence counsel David Bunce said that during his time in prison, Edgecombe had allegedly been involved in two violent incidents.

He had pleaded guilty to a charge of assault with a weapon after the taking of depositions and is in custody for sentence next month.

He has been remanded for a pre- depositions conference in about a fortnight on the other charge.

The trial began last Monday, and continued into the weekend because of a prior commitment by Justice Young.

The last of the defence evidence was heard on Saturday and Justice Young summed up in the afternoon, before the jury retired at 3pm. It returned with its verdicts after 11 hours of deliberations.

During that time, it returned to court once, to ask for one section of evidence to be read out to it, and to ask His Honour to repeat the legal definition of rape.
