Brakes - Weird feeling

Right just replaced the pads as the old ones were well past the used by date, and at the same time replaced the front tire (now running a matchin pair of Qualifiers), and now have noticed something under heavy braking.

When braking heavily for the most part it feels normal/fine. But as the bike is just about stopped there is a wobbly clunky wiggly feel coming from the front, I initially thought some bolts or something was loose.

I chucked the bike up on a jack and wiggled and jiggled the front wheel to feel for worn bearings but there seems to be no issues with either the steering head or the wheel bearings. I also double checked the bolts the shop would of taken off doing the wheel and the bolts I took off doing the brakes and they all seem fine.


Any ideas on what this could be?

Can you feel it through the brake lever?

Kevmo had a similar 'wierdness' with the front end on the 600rr he had.

No its not a pulsing through the lever I don't think, feel it through the bars I think will have to try do it more or pay more attention to it.

Steering head bearings getting loose would be my guess.

Sounds exactly how mine were when they were loose/munted.

I found if I rode along about 20km/h clutch in and tapped the brake I could hear and feel a very distinctive click.

Is it like a juddering sensation through the bars.If so maybe pads still need to be bedded in a bit more.Take ya bike out and get the brakes and tyres up to temp by doing two or three medium/hard stops(goes without saying this should be done around no other traffic)one after the other.Then repeat,as hard braking as you dare.Try increasing speed each time before you brake.
By the way what kind of bike is it?

It takes about 500Km to bed the pads in, it could be the pads moving in the calipers, 1-2 mil difference will produce a feel and unusual sound if you are used to your bike really well, also when you did the pads did you check the movement in the calipers slides. where they free and clean? Loads of options really.

yes would think that it would take a few stoppiees and km's to allow true bedding in...as it will take a little time to get true pad grip...also i too change my brake fluid too when changing pad's..no other reason other than while the calipers are off i drain and replace with fresh fluid..bloody cheap enough and doesn't take to much time either..however give it time to bed..if still giving you that undue feeling..then look towards head bearings..

Better take a spare nappy with you, just in case it is actually the steering head bearings.

Kinda like the 06 CBR600RR5 in my sig.....

Brakes were cleaned up when pads were replaced including the slides.

Done 1000km on these brakes now, NP and back on the weekend ( but in saying that I don't use the brakes that much on open road touring...)


Checked the steering head bearings and these seem to have no play in them from the wiggling and wobbling I did with the bike on the side stand and a jack/



Some hard braking on the way to football didn't have any shuddering as such more a harsher metal on metal sound than normal....... might just be new brakes (been a while since I have had that! )


ps. Glenfield cant be that bad a suburb, took the bike as I couldn't find my car keys....... noticed them sticking out the back of my boot as I left on the bike (they had been there two days in full view of the street! )
