I'll bring the gloves and train with ya!
There are several good training gyms around Welly and they're best place to go. They have different types of programmes available. Muay Thai is pretty full on but you can go at your own pace. http://www.gsw.co.nz/ is a martial arts gym in Mount Vic. They have a couple of different things taught there and do self defence classes. They also have weights and gym facilities for alternate training too.

The cheapest option is just to come round and grab the dogs - they'll give you some exercise...
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the evening,
    we will remember them

I was hoping you'd see this Col!!
what made me think of it is there's a little place behind Richard's Motorcycles in J'ville that has just opened and the sign says they do boxing and self defence lessons which made me think "hmmm, nice and close to home, would be more likely to actually go if I don't have to travel too far to get there!"
But, hey I'd love some encouragement etc and I know of at least a few other "ladies" who may be keen to come along also.

The idea of using my legs appeals as I have a soccer background and know that I lose weight easily when I use the major muscles in my legs and bum and think kicking a punching bag (or person) would be better for me than the impact of running etc as all that seems to do is make me "bulk up", not too attractive!
Also from riding my bucket I've noticed that I tend to not open my legs much on the bike, tending more to cling onto the tank with my thighs and find it hard to stick my knee out (knee down action) and thought that doing something that makes me open my legs may help my bucket racing a bit..... just a thought.
Dunno too much about the other boxing typres except french and english, but maybe thai boxing would be good then! And you develop your suppleness a lot as you allowed to kick to the head of the bag (or person), (at least in french boxing)..so better at openin your legs lol

    HA!!! You're on!
But honestly, have you done a bit of boxing or Thai boxing or something Col? Maybe you could train me and I can "practice" on Nige and you can tell me how well I'm doing by his bruises!

Savate (pronounced IPA: [savat]), also known as boxe française, French boxing, French Kickboxing or French Footfighting, is a French martial art which uses both the hands and feet as weapons and combines elements of western boxing with graceful kicking techniques. Only foot kicks are allowed, unlike some systems, such as Muay Thai and Silat, which allow the use of the knees or shins. Savate is perhaps the only style of kickboxing in which the fighters habitually wear shoes (savate being a French word for "old shoe").

I have done Muay Thai and enjoyed it. great for fitness.

But if you are after something that is fun to keep you interested, is non contact, and heaps of women do it, It will improve balance core strength, But most importantly is enjoyable. Capoeira.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capoeira

Capoeira (IPA: [ka.pu.ˈej.ɾɐ]) is an Afro-Brazilian art form that ritualizes movement from martial arts, games, and dance. It was brought to Brazil from Angola some time after the 16th century in the regions known as Bahia, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, and São Paulo. Participants form a roda or circle and take turns either playing musical instruments (such as the Berimbau), singing, or ritually sparring in pairs in the center of the circle. The game is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints, and extensive use of sweeps, kicks, and headbutts. Less frequently used techniques include elbow-strikes, slaps, punches, and body throws. Its origins and purpose are a matter of heated debate, with the spectrum of argument ranging from views of Capoeira as a uniquely Brazilian folk dance with improvised fighting movements to claims that it is a battle-ready fighting form directly descended from ancient African techniques.

This second Video you can hear the music that is played and as such helps with the rythym.

Whats a good self defence option for someone who doesnt want to be kicked in the head during training.

Oh and the pool thing - swim in the ocean! It's free and is only full of moonfish if the sewage has overflowed from heavy rain or if you live next to whangerei harbour.

Have done kick boxing classes at a boxing gym in central Aucks, awesome fun!. They are a pure boxing/kick boxing gym. I am reasonably fit, but found muscles I never knew I had. It is a fun workout and you learn heaps. The mixture of exercises is fantastic, cardio, strength, and flexibility work made fun (is that possible?), and have I said that it's fun?

Just be weary about where you go, I had been to a few up in Aucks and alot of the people there were farken tossers, too serious, very competitive blah blah. Most boxing gyms give you a couple of free sessions for trial too, so visit a few before you decide hmmmmmmkay

Judo is farken cool.....you get to throw people around, there is not alot of kicking as it's all about unbalancing your opponent, getting them on the floor and making them tap out (and sometimes black out - teeheee)!! Better form of wrestling really.

With you on that one! I don't really fancy losing teeth or going to work with a black eye every week!

This is true. I grew up swimming in the ocean, but I have to admit it doesn't do a lot for me these days (had a few bad experiences swimming in the sea) and always feel I should have someone with me just in case I get into trouble out there (it's also not heated!!)

Cool, so were you doing a mixture of boxing and kick boxing?
What you have described sounds like exactly what I'm after! I've never really been too interested in martial arts as it always seems to me to be a lot about posing and yelling and mental stuff when all I want to do is get fit and have some fun (and learning how to kick someone's arse is a bonus)

Yeah it was a gym for Boxers and Kickboxers to train and compete, but they also held sessions/classes that combined the two arts, these were aimed purely for people who wanted to get fit using the Boxing and Kickboxing training techniques.
