Rim grease?

anyone know if you can use vaseline instead of rim grease
on your airfilters

id say so, but the theory is that the grease is sticky, vaseline is not so sticky.

also vaseline being a pertoleum jelly i presume it must contain petrol, which is not advisable to put on filters as it fucks the glue which holds them together

or as above, do what i and others have proven to be successful, not use any grease and just oil your filter. its worked for me so far

what is best to use to clean said filters?
i use mineral turps works well and the filters havent fallen apart yet

I must have used it for at least 15 years on air filter rims and I never had any sign of it attacking the filter. The good part is that being white you can see if any dirt is getting past it. Also it isn't hard on your hands. Shell used to sell big tins of the stuff.

I really have to say that notoil is so much easier in every aspect. It washes out in water, you can put it through your washing machine and its not hard on the filter glue.

Are you talking about your 2stroke. As I've been told by a few people that on a 4stroke it is more important to ensure the filter is properly oiled and seals correctly. This is due to dirt particles bouncing around in the valves. To help it seal it was said that grease is to be used.

I'm no mechanic so maybe someone who has more knowledge could clear this up. And apparently it's not so important for a 2stroke.

The notoil comes with a pack of white rim grease.

note to rupe - the rim grease isn't the kind of rim grease you'd use when you're wearing your yellow tartan pants.

shit your not letting cheese near a game console are you? the last one that went under his knife never went again

i wouldnt want to have shit passing thru into any engine of mine, if you look at how the whole setup goes together the grease is pretty un nessacary, but if it makes you feel at ease by all means go for it - that clears up my concern about the vaseline too,.

dont wash your filters in pertol

kerosene is quite effective and doesnt damage filters, once youve washed them out with kero, wash them with some warm soapy water then let them dry.

i use about 5 filters so i hardly ever have to clean them, use them all, then clean them all in one go

I have to agree with Booom on this. I used to use grease on the rims but it was just another step to add to an already tedious job.

I've been using Notoil for the last few years and shit its easy. I have never seen evidence of anything getting past the filter.

The Notoil cleaner works really well or just grab the liquid dynamo off wifey's laundry shelf for cleaning.

He's already fixed mine and it doubles up as a heater now which is good, he's now fixing a mates.

Don't use grease on mine and have been using kero to clean it too(Food town sells the cheapest I've found).

Like I said I'm not a mechanic, but if your experience has shown it not needed then, sweeeet.
