I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but i don't like your chances of getting a GOOD one for $450.

You might want to raise your budget somewhat. They will soon pay for themselves.

    Best ones,would be a valentine,escort,or a beltronics.
I wouldn't bother with any other brands.

These are a couple of cheaper ones.

As for the price I just whacked that in there when I made the add. Wasn't too sure on what I would need to pay but I believe an escort can be had for decent prices.

cheers for the help so far

You're probably already aware, but i'll tell you anyway, that as good as a radar detector is,you're not bulletproof against getting caught by cops.
They don't have their radar guns on all the time. They turn them on and off.

If there's traffic in front of you, you'll have a better chance at picking them up with a fair bit of warning,as they use the radar on them. But if you're on a lonely highway, you might find that you are the first vehicle they zone in on,and that can be too late.

Also, some radar detectors are not good at picking up laser, but all in all, you're still WAY better off with one.

    Soooo true

as well as the radar you need the accessories to go with it...

either an ear piece or a wireless led system so when it goes off you know it is... and somewhere to mount it...
I have a hard wired in x50 escort that I got off trade me for a good price... extras include a set of LED lights on my screen that are run off the earpiece plug and the wireless LED in the helmet.... as soon as it goes off I hit the brakes hard.... still no guarantee that I will not get a ticket but has saved me a few times...
I do not use the laser band because as far as I'm concerned if they get me with that then I'm screwed anyway as with a narrow beam it will not always register the beam.... my cell phone also causes faulse laser alarms

Yea I'm fully aware of this. After one for long trips I may take on my bike. Not going to be exceeding the limit by 2x or anything, just a slightly higher average speed

How good do you reckon the Escort is? I've heard some guys say they are the best.
What would you expect to pay for one these days?

I have an escort and it seems really good

can not comment on the others as I have not used them...

I picked my escort up on trademe a while ago... they range from $200 up... maybe a bit cheaper if one slips through un noticed
