Bugger. Will have to fork out for hirage until I can afford the wee bit extra to buy one. I do wonder how they can get ~$600 out of something that just pretty much farts at a receiver at a predetermined point....

It is really hard to see where the expense is in the bloody things, but the sooner you buy one, the sooner it starts paying for itself. I imagine there would be a ready market for second hand ones at 2/3 full price as well. Full Actrix Winter Series hire is $270. $33.75 x 8 days.

If you guys find some place to get them that are cheaper than the AMB site can you let me know? I'm keen on buying one as the hiring fee is stupid and it will pay for itself in a year.

$270 hire per unit for the Winter Series.
    100 odd riders,
    $270 * 100 = $27000

There must be hidden expenses in there we don't know about.

Perhaps Tim, (if your listening), you could share a little bit of the costings that make $30 + GST per day a fair price for something that gets used again and again.

I understand that if we damage a hire one, we have to cough up the money to replace it, so that is not covered in the hire price.

its how he makes a living...he is not a charity...so usually rules of running a business apply...and 3.8k per race day seems pretty fair for the service he offers and costs asociated with it. and more to the point...he does a Excellent job...infact a better than excellent job really!!

and most racers would rather pay that small [in the grand scheme of things]...than have people try to count riders per lap...and they get times.

That's not MY understanding - I thought that is why the cost was so high, to cover the ones that get incinerated when a bike bursts into flame,( I can't see how else you could damage them. Soild state electronics in a block of resin as far as I can see.)

When you invest a few hundred grand into something you have to make a return on that somehow. As cowpoos said, he isn't a charity and seeing as he's the only guy in NZ doing it he can charge what he wants. I believe 2 or 3 years ago he made the call that he isn't too interested in the transponder side of things now, he wants everyone to have their own and he just wants to show up to a meeting and run the timing setup. From what I've heard the logistics of charging, maintaining and chasing people up that forget to give them back is a massive headache for him!

Well I think you would have a very unplesant surprise if you did infact happen to stuff one. The responsibility is on the rider to ensure the transponder is returned in the same condition as it was given to them in. If not then you will find yourself footing the bill for a replacement!!

No problem with Tim making a living as has been said he does an amazing job and provides a very professional service for a club event, maybe he could start selling his transponders off to us.
Wouldn't be racing if it wasn't for:MotoMart, Pirelli, EBC Brakes, Ripecoffee.co.nz, Slotmedia.co.nz, Totalbodyshop.co.nz and Wurth

You could buy one off me, PM me with a price your willing to buy it for $150-$200.
Mine has been used for off road use, so not sure if they are any different for road racing?
My friend is using it at the moment so will have to get it back first.

I'll be wanting to buy one too. Hirage seems a bit on the steep side, but as several people have stated, the man is trying to make a living and is providing a bloody good service to us all. I'm happy to buy second hand if it can be guaranteed to be compatible with his system.
