Phobic Trust custom rod raffle car for sale on Trade Me

At Americarna we bought $10 tickets in a $200,000 custom built 37 coupe custom rod as a fundraiser for the Phobic Trust, who we'd never heard of before.

Heard last weekend the car and others had been seized by a finance company and today the car is for sale on Trade Me - http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=213330897

Bit of a cheek when the tickets themselves say: 11...... If due to unforeseen circumstances the Phobic Trust is required to cancel this lottery it will be announced in the Dominion Post and Sunday Star Times. If due to unforeseen circumstances the Phobic Trust has to cancel the lottery a full and complete refund of $10 per ticket purchased will be provided by the organisers.

Looks like everyone who bought a ticket has made a $10 donation to the trust and no one will get a prize of any sort. I certainly won't buy tickets again for any organisation that I would not be happy to make a donation to. Only bought the tickets in the hope of winning the bloody car so we could sell it and buy something we liked better!

So whats happened exactly? You purchased a raffle ticket for the car and the raffle didn't go through because of the finance company seizing the vehicle?

Answer: See previous question re raffle ticket issues... the cancellation was a news item on TV1. Remember Phobic Trust are looking for your support in this unfortunate matter.. most raffle ticket purchasers are not looking for a refund but have instead written it off as a goodwill donation to a great cause. 9:41 pm, Wed 15 Apr

As I understand it the company that was building the car went to the Phobic trust with the raffle idea & the Phobic trust agreed. Car builder goes broke & his finance company sells assets including the raffle car to recoup losses.
The Phobic trust has egg on its face, But I would not be too angry at them , they are as much the victim of this unfortunate situation as you are, perhaps more so , you lost $10 but they lost potential donors that are vital to their survival. Still frustrating I agree.

At the risk of taking this off topic, what does the Phobic Trust actually, well, do?

Is it just raising awareness of Phobias or are they working towards a "cure"?

Sorry to disappoint you - I copied and pasted his/her post as it basically said what I wanted to say, but I am not 'trailer1' or whoever that is on Trade Me.

Never heard of the Phobic Trust before this raffle and the tickets were sold by some guy from the Custom Rod club at Americarna. I realise the trust isn't to blame, but I think it's a bit off for the receivers to sell the car and for NO prize to be offered to ticket holders. I only bought the tickets in the hope of winning the car, but would be happy to let them keep the $20 if a prize of some sort was offered - say $5000. I would NEVER have donated $20 to a trust I'd never heard of (have no idea what they do actually) and I'm not happy to sit back and say they can keep the money when the ticket states a refund will be given if the raffle is cancelled. What's the bet their lawyers will wriggle out of it by saying they didn't cancel the raffle, it all turned to custard after the finance company seized the car.

I just had a look at their website - this is what they 'do' - "The Phobic Trust is a registered charitable trust established in New Zealand to provide specialist treatment, education and support specifically to anxiety disorder sufferers. We rely on charitable donations to carry out our work."

Obviously not government funded and they provide treatment for anxiety disorders... no, I certainly would not have handed over $20 to them unless I was going in the draw to win the car. Sorry, but I support other charities and this would never be one of them.

I thought that too. Not worried enough about $20 to contact their lawyer, but if they do offer a refund, I will be taking advantage of it. I'd rather donate that money towards the care of Lincoln, the dog who was attacked this week. I realise many people may suffer from 'anxiety' but to be honest I think they need to give themselves a stern talking to and get on with life!

The phobic trust actually do good work. I cant comment on the raffle, but I do know people who have benefited greatly from work done by the phobic trust and I know personally just how debilitating anxiety disorders can be.

Ditto, I know people directly involved who do support work for them. Good organisation helping people who need it.

Looks like a lot of people did and they should get their money back. I choose which charities I support by way of a donation and would happily donate $20 (we bought two tickets) to those particular charities. I also buy rafflles run as fundraisers IF I want the raffle prize being offered. If this had been a $10 ticket and the prize was a trip to a rugby game overseas, I would not have bought it, no matter what charity was running it. Likewise if the prize was a kid's playground set. I wanted the car (admittedly to sell it to buy something I liked better like a Pontiac GTO!) and who was running the raffle was irrelevant. I certainly would never donate $20 to the Phobic Trust, no matter how good the work they do is. Sorry, but that's MY choice. If the raffle is no longer going ahead, they should offer people their money back - some will say keep it but I could do with that $20 right now as I'm self-employed and work is bloody slow right now.
