A few different opinions on this one.
I lube after every second tank of gas and always after a ride, so the chain is nice and hot. If you ride straight after lubing it gets flicked all over the show.
Spray on lube about every 1,000km and changed my last chain after 38,000km whether it needed it or not. Haven't worried about doing it warm or whether just before a ride or not.
Cheers

I put motorcycle engine oil on mine weekly or the next ride after being in the rain. There's a bit of fling but that's only caused trouble once when I put a little bit too much on with the paint brush
Done the spray on wax thing and nope, it was seriously damaged by 8,000km.
Clean your chain with kero every 1000km, or when dirty looking, so the grit doesn't damage the o-ring seals. It cleans up real easy.
Also keep an eye on slack and adjust when required.
90% of the time spent writing this post was spent thinking of something witty to say. It may have been wasted.
If you plan to keep your bike long term, a Scottoiler would be the go but they're a bit over $200, so not if you plan to upgrade your bike anytime soon. My current chain and sprockets have done over 35000 km and look like new.
I got a "Loobman" figuring at about NZD50.00 it is much cheaper than chain/sprockets, not installed yet as it only turned up yesterday. Ordered two so if anyone is interested let me know.
See http://www.chainoiler.co.uk/ for blah blah
I lube it every 1500kms or so. It only takes a second if you have a centre stand or a rear paddock stand
Clean the chain only when it's dirty and take a look see for some of the tips on chain cleaning... click here (note the words of warning in there... about losing your fingers - it's a common enough mistake!!)
$2,000 cash if you find a buyer for my house, kumeuhouseforsale@straightshooters.co.nz for details
Scotoilers are good. Pixie-oilers (TM) are better. PM him for a price.
Speed doesn't kill people.
Stupidity kills people.
What are these "chains" of which you speak? Is that Tina Arena I hear warming up?
"Standing on your mother's corpse you told me that you'd wait forever." [Bryan Adams: Summer of 69]
lube the chain every couple of days. Rest of the bike is falling to bits, but the chain is sweet...
