It'll end up at 1 billion plus. All for a minority sport that the rest of the world doesn't even know about.
Sad fuckers!

Speed doesn't kill people.
Stupidity kills people.

Let them waste yours and my money on this stadium, have it host a couple of games that will be shown all over the world and watch it not boost tourism, then get some corporation to sponsor it and go to ruin.
Heck I am not even a rugby follower but I recall recent news saying the the south Island will not see an All Blacks test for the next season (or was that just Dunedin). As was said now days rugby is a business with players reaping fantastic pay and the governing body doing the same from television rights yet they still seem to get government assistance.
Where is the money for some of our other sports, they could not even get together and sort out the V8 street cars, what about some money to build a world class track to get some international motor sports out here.
In this country if it ain't rugby it ain't sport, we could always refer to the last games medal tally and the areas that we always used to collect a couple of medals (shooting comes to mind) but in this pc everyone must feel good era we have now those sports are scorned but legislation, hmm a bit like motor sports really it uses fuel and produces carbon emissions wonder how long it will be before we don't even host the rally circuit due to some pc overly green zealot complaining.
Its not the destination that is important its the journey.
Sorry Lou, but the RWC actually comes in at #3 in global sports event charts after the Olympics and the Football WC.
I still say we should demolish that Pacific Events place in Manukau and put a proper stadium there.
Then we can redevelop Eden Park as a proper full size cricket ground!![]()
I thought Geoff Vazey, as the CEO of Ports of Auckland, has explained this very nicely. Yes, it's feasible to build "Stadium Aotearoa" (puh-lease) on the Bledisloe Wharf site, but not in time for RWC 2011. He has to move most of his current port operations before any work can start, which involves reclaiming a significant chunk of new land out of the harbour.
The Gummint claims that its experts have a different view. They should make that public.
I'm also curious to know why the Government believes this facility can be built without having to dip into the public purse and, if this is true, why the Government is involved at all.
And don't get me started on the "benefits" of the RWC. Suffice it to say I think it has fucked rugby in New Zealand.
"Standing on your mother's corpse you told me that you'd wait forever." [Bryan Adams: Summer of 69]
Who made that stat up? A single F1 round demolishes the combined earnings of the RWC in revenue.
Lou's right. Fuck all people in the UK know or care about Rugby (League or Union) and it was invented there. Rugby is a Toff's sport and if you didn't go to the right school, you don't represent England. You may get into the Lions. Bit different from NZ or Australia's approach. Rugby is seen as a soft option in the US, compared to the NFL.
League was invented to keep the lower classes away from the Toff's.
If a man is alone in the woods and there isn't a woke Hollywood around to call him racist, is he still white?
Helens parting gift, "HELEN CLARK STADIUM " Gaz.
Bullshit, just because rugby is number two to football, that does not equate to "Fuck all"
Also bullshit....Jason Robinson, Andy Farrell, Micky Skinner, Peter Winterbottom.....
And again....you just don't have the same earnings potential, there's no way most of those steroid-inflated lumps would part with their body armour.
League was invented to allow working people to be paid travelling expenses in breach of Union's "amateur" code
It is relatively fuck all. Even in Aus, I was in a pub that was showing 3 concurrent sporting events, a standard game of NRL league, a game of aussie rules, and a Wallabie test. The sound was on for the league in preference to a national rugby test.
I see in the paper today that the government has now told the auckland council(s) to sort it out or else......

Union and league interest is inverted at some point crossing the Tasman.
Super 14 over there gets the coverage the local League does here.
Interest in the Union test matches has grown in the professional era, but the basketball draws bigger crowds that club Rugby.
Cricket is king.
Even if it is, Snooker is rating higher than Rugby then, isn't it?

Ok, yeah, funny.
There's enough money in Rugby that Tom Walkinshaw took money out of his motorracing to put into a team....people watch F1 cos it's there on TV and if you fall asleep half way through (as you do) nothing will have changed when you wake up. It's an easy highlights package to do (Start, couple of pit-tops, finish, champagne spraying done). It's the sporting equivalent of Coronation Street and just as boringly predictable.
Nobody cares about F1. The top motorsport in the UK is probably rallying with all those weirdos in bobble-hats and anoraks standing around in forests....
