    Surfing

so my 15 year old son has a choice of school camps. 'turangi extreme' 'rotorua bootcamp' and a host of others. "you've done all that" i say to him, "how about this 'surf camp' at Raglan? you could learn to surf properly" i say. BORING he says. "surfies suck" he says. wounded i am, being a surfer of little talent "too bad - you're going" i say. (no drinking and driving in THIS household....)

i get a text from him after day 1 of surf school.

    'I wnt a surfb0ard'

Although I have pretty much retired from surfing now, I spent a good part of my life surfing and met many great people doing so. It must be one of the healthiest sports you can get into - your fitness just skyrockets - and its also good for SERENITY.

    Cheap too.

He'll definitely thank you when the surfer babes start hanging about in their bikinis.

Ex-surfer here. Was one of the reasons I stopped riding for a while. Can't surf with one leg. It will be great having a grommit in the house. Well done there. I've been thinking about getting a mini-mal and trying to get my kids into it. I don't think I can really be arsed though.

surfing is awsome, its awsome fun and you get very fit doing it.

Nothing like getting on the clean wave and hearing nothing but the board skimming on the water.

Haven't tried it, but watch with fascination whenever they show it on the news or a sports show. Those dudes have some skill. Awsome sport.

i've got an awesome big wave 9'6" - he wasn't allowed to take it as they supply all the boards for learning on, and he wasn't taking my mal to raglan on the rocks. i used to surf there 5 times a week, but i've turned into a latte drinking mt maunganui surfer/snob.

which reminds me of a story. my family and 2 other families go the mount base camp every year for a week after new year. the dads both ride big mals - one has an 11 foot handcrafted work of art. anyway. me and poo are out the back one morning - about a 3 foot swell working - not too stressful, a nice wave for doing handstands and hanging 10 on. hadn't seen mike since he rode a wave right in, then from out of the blue comes mike with 3 large takeaway lattes from sidetrack cafe! complete with caramel slices! very nice, sitting 100m off shore, drinking lattes, eating cake, talking shit......looking like ponsonby wankers

I need to get back into surfing! I've been looking at bi-boards so I can strap them on my back and have the best of both worlds! Biking and surfing yeehaa! And on ya for getting him into surfing school - I bet when he caught his first wave, he had a grin from ear to ear!

Grew up in Gisborne, went to school with one of NZ's best surfers, and almost everyone I knew surfed or at least pretended to, spent many a day down at the beach watching the boyfriend surf etc, but I tried and had no balance and kept just about drowning myself, much prefer the body board, don't need any balance for that, and I just really don't like sand.

that's cause you're doing it wrong. either stay out of the sand dunes, or do it standing up!
