I don't nescesarily think that modern immigration policy should match the original policies which are 100+ years out of date, but there is IMHO a definite need to restrict immigration to ensure we dont face an erosion of our culture & society.

Immigrants of any race need to follow our culture and traditions as well as there own, and defer to ours where these clash etc.

I've known 3rd generation asians who are as kiwi as you or I, and also known 2nd/3rd generation greeks where the older family members barely speak english, and only socialise with other greeks for the most part, despite having been here for 60+ years . I know which ones I'd rather have as immigrants and isnt my mate Spiro's family :-P

I very firmly believe noone should be allowed to migrate to NZ unless they speak GOOD english, and show a willingness to understand and adapt to our culture. As I understand it to get american citizenship you have to pass a reasonably tough quiz which covers american history, core beliefs, system of law etc. We really need something like that here.

Economic integrity on the other hand. No money, people starve and die. Not so hard to understand
I believe it should be based on cultural integrity rather than racial integrity, but given recent history can anyone truly claim that it was a good idea for example to allow such massive muslim and lebanese immigration into Australia in the past 50 years?

If that migration had been muted with policies ensuring that the people spoke english, and understood australian culture, traditions and laws before they were granted citizenship I suspect we'd never had had the Cronulla riots, the mad hatter muslim cleric, or the Aussie government breaking up terrorist rings with plans to attack the Lucas Heights reactor.

Well I was born in London, parents were English and I was asked to produce proof that I had been taught English at school.........had to go to 3 schools to get this.

When I was waiting to get my NZ licence, there was an Asian guy at the desk with an interpreter.

Now I am not and have never been racist. However, I believe that speaking English has to be a pre-requisite. Okay, culture has to be respected but that works both ways and presumably, say take Muslim's, they are coming here for a better life sp should embrace it.

But it is Govt's that decide who gets in so we have to accept and make them welcome like you made us Pommie Bastards eh...he he...and rather than complain we embrace and help them to be part of this wonderful Country because if we don't then the Greeks mentioned earlier will not speak English....if you get my drift.

    So there....

That depends just where you are sitting. Not much fun if you were into the alternitive life style in Queensland under J B-P, or for that matter if you are now in Iraq.

Well that kind of points towards a basic lack of intelligence, just think how much it would cost to develop and manufacture a plane with the capabilities of the F-18? For how many for your own forces? What kind of international market share are you going to get competing with the Septics?

Nice, easy rhetoric with no basis in logic. What do you call it here? Dog-whistle politics?

But as we all debate the problems in the Middle east and social problems with the refugees that have been displaced by war and corporate greed, our Chinese freinds in the east amass a huge arsenal of modern weaponry the likes of which have never been seen before.
The Americans are very nervous as the chinese have just demonstrated they have the capability to knock out orbiting satelites at any time leaving western armies that rely on satelite information blind and stumbling about in the dark.
But they still cant build a decent motorbike!!!!!

He is talking bullshit. Its a story called "Flight of the Endeavour" by R.J Pinero. Its one of the short stories in a book by Stephen Coonts as I stated above
To every man upon this earth
    Death cometh sooner or late
And how can a man die better
    Than facing fearful odds
For the ashes of his fathers
And the temples of his Gods
