Why would they do that?

From what I understand she won the latest court case, making the money hers and once she died it passed to her child surely?

That money will no doubt be put in some trust fund, earning 18 years of interest and be an absolute fortune when the kid grows up. She won't be there to look after it, but at least it won't go hungry.
