    Deano at Paeroa

I had a fantastic day, despite a few problems.

Friday night after loading the bike onto the trailer, Mikey points out a 25mm crack in my front tyre. Closer inspection revealed it was cut to the canvas. Luckily I had a new set all ready for the VMCC winter series, so threw them in the car to change later.

Passed scrutineering on Saturday ok, despite the tyre. Pirelli were there early Sunday morning so I beat the rush and was their first customer. Cheers heaps Pirelli guys - it was well worth a dozen Mac's.

I was pretty tentative in the first practice as I had to scrub the new tyres in. The front slid a tiny amount in the left hander but after that it was all good. Next to no chicken strips after the first practice.

I missed the second practice, as did Goblin. I started getting my gear on at the first call and was just about to leave my pit when the final call was announced. It took a while to get through the crowd in the pits - had to rev the engine a lot to get people's attention to get out of the way. Got to the dummy grid as the marshal was closing the 'gate'. Bugger - something to remember for next time I guess.

First race - started on 3rd row beside Frosty. I got a wicked start and nearly ran into the back of a motard and Kawa ER6(?). Then Jarrod Wintle cut across and nearly took my front end off as he shot for a gap on his SV.

I think I was 10th for a while but slipped back to 13th by the end. I was second 400cc in the field so was rapt with that.

Second race.......well.....warm up lap and I could hear something wasn't quite right with the drivetrain. I pulled up at the rear of the start grid and had a quick glance but couldn't see anything amiss. Never the less, I think it had psyched me out a bit as I didn't get anywhere near as good a start and was too cautious going into the first corner. The 'problem' just got worse and I drifted further and further back - turns out it was a collapsed wheel bearing, so I guess it's lucky that the rear didn't lock up or spit the chain off.

Definitely more of a buzz than Wanganui - the kink on the front straight felt awesome flat out - dunno if I would like it so much on an F2 or F1 bike though. It seemed bloody well fast enough on the little 400.

I felt bad for Logan being taken out in the first practice - glad you were ok though.

Jono - I saw a bit of each of your races and you were doing bloody fantastic - big ups mate !!

Thanks to SVS for the loan of the wheel stands during the tyre changes.

Thanks to those who called in to the pit with best wishes - It was great to put some more faces to names.

Thanks to Poos for the loan of the trailer.

Thanks to Stew at TSS for the loan of the tent.

Thanks to the marshals for clapping when I crawled back to the pits after 'just' finishing the second race. You don't realise how many people are watching until you have to limp back all alone on the track.

    Well done Deano.
Your getting to be a real race meet junkie now by attending all there is to ride in !!!
If you can leave the stuffed bearing in the wheel for the winter series ill be able to beat you and have an easier time of it lol.
Hmmmm Jarrod on an SV ??? does that mean he hasnt got the ZXR anymore or is he just keeping his boss happy with a Suzuki flag flying in F3 ?
    Cheers mate , Paul.

Yep - I'm doing the Cliffhanger Hillclimb in March too. A bit different to racing cause your riding alone, but still great fun.

I heard a rumour you were chucking a CBR600 motor into your bike ?

and that wee tussle you had with FROSTY....... until he did finally pass you.
Hey at least that wheel bearing lasted UNTIL the last race before giving up.

    You did blardy well.

Great to finally meet you and your other half.

was a one off. on trevors bike. I think he made some comment while rebuilding it that the SV would be great for the street, so trevor said - why don't you.

Think the ZXR will be back for the winter series.

And deano - fix those wheel bearings, they were pretty far gone at the start of the day.

It's not often the front gets air on the little 400 !!

The worst I had was very a mild tank slapper coming off the first hump - I needed a bit more practice to feel comfortable after the second hump into the right hander.

    What's happening this weekend ?

Possibly get there for a look - might have been keen to enter if it was the long circuit.

All those wanting to join the DEANO groopie club form a line around the corner. I heard from a few locals here you did some awesome moves Deano and these folks were impressed. But they drink DB lol.
Im glad to here Jarrod will be back on the ZXR for the winter series hes great to race with as you are Deano , Ohhhh and you to Bistard lol.
I have given thought to a 600 engine and even got it approved as in the rules by MNZ but i wont be doing it now, think of a nimble frame with 85 HP wahoo it may happen later asa i have a spare frame/swingarm in the attic.
I am doing this years winter series and then hanging the leathers up to concentrate on my latest project.
I need to find a young person to ride the bike with almost no costs to them as the sponsor wants me to mentor / manage them and he will continue to pay for everything so if here is the right place to post it then come to see me at the track during the year (CANBRACE number 170 cbr400) and put your name down for a selection list. A track day will be used to finally select a candidate. If it goes ok for the first year the sponsor wants to see a full national series attack and another bike as well so ya never know if he gets a better bike than the CBR i just may have to ride it or get another rider to join the team.
    Cheers all Paul.
Im looking forward to it and it has to be good for the sport, and the sponsor.

Good going. Shame about the wheel bearing, the front tyre and the missing of second practice.
