I think 11:30am would be the time to leave the site. By the the everyone has gone to the supermarket for their supplies and we find a spot it's going to be 1:30. Add another couple of hours for eating some lunch, finding a few tracks for a bit of a explore, we'll be back at the site by about 4:00 - perfect.

Gotta go through the gorge for sure. Looking at Google maps there's a few side roads off Hakataramea Highway that go down to the river. There could also be a few good spots On McHenrys Rd at Hakataramea itself, could stop at the Haka pub for a quick one as well.

That would suite me as I hope to be doing the inland route and could meet up before I get to Waimate, if I'm running late.
And of course it is a nice spot as well, just park a bike so I can see it, so I can find your picnic spot.

And I could get something from Omarama before I arrive, like Raw Squid (fish bait).
Or buy something for me and I'll fix you up when I get there.(better idea)
Feel the fear and do it anyway

Ok it sounds like all we need is a meeting point in Waimate at 1:30 and we can make it up as we go from there.
I've never been to the town so does anyone know an obvious spot - supermarket carpark or monument or something.
I've heard about this Waimate gorge being a good ride so I was going to get up there anyway - also trying to suss out some possibilities for a wallaby shooting trip in a month or so. We've got some contacts for this but I'm quite keen to have a bit of a look around first.

Lemans - by the sound of things if you dip your squid bait in chocolate there'll be some takers!!!

Waimate has a park/garden area a few hundred meters from the shops on there main street.........how about meeting there at 1.30.Stopping at the Haka pub would have been a great idea sensible but sadly it is no longer open,if a beer is needed theres 2 pubs over the bridge at kurow.

How about this place? About 30k's out from Waimate, on the river bank, trees, what more is needed?

Yeah ok there's a little gravel but it is only a wee bit.

    Just a thought.

that looks Ok to me - and theres plenty of options of where to go afterwards. I presume that route you show is through the Waimate gorge I keep hearing about? The gravel you are referring to? - is that under the white line you have drawn?

Sounds like a plan Mike - so mainstreet park at 1:30 and then heading out to that picnic ground on the teddy bear map.

If you want to find a pub afterwards its not too far from there to Kurow pub, or maybe over Benmore to Otematata pub (dunno if oldrider will be back with his new bike by then? - if so call could on him as well). If theres another rider keen for a gravel ride then back via Myers Pass appeals to me.
