There should be NO free health services for recentmigrants, let alone expensive dollar HIV treatements.

Taxpayer funded health services should only support natural born citizens, and immigrant citiznes who have been here an extended period of time(say 5+ years). Make everyone else pay for it, tourists, foreign students, residents etc.

So does that mean I'd get reduced tax and not have to pay fuggin ACC contributions for 5 years? If so, then fine. To be quite honest, with the exception of emergency medical treatment I'd bugger off back home if I developed some long term medical problem.

Unfortunately it's not just citizen's who pay tax dollars. To be honest, I think you'll find most immigrants are hard working and pump a lot of skills and therefore money into this economy.

Perhaps kiwi's abroad and doing their big OE should be denied medical treatment? A hell of a lot of kiwi's in the UK and Australia would be pretty much faked.

As for HIV. With the size of the population, allowing emmigrants in (no matter what creed or colour) with HIV, raises the potential, even if it is very small potential, for it to become an epidemic. If they are not testing for it, then there is a possibilty that they are unaware they are carriers and therefore putting others at risk, even if unintentional.

The thing is most 1st gen immigrants who travel to another country with a different culture tend to establish enclaves or ghettos that reflect their own culture and language requirements, and cultural differences limit the interaction between the immigrant population and the locals.

Much like the Gay community who are experiencing a rise in HIV infection numbers tend socialise in different circles to the heteros.

I understand what you're saying - don't think there's really any right or wrong answer, just a decision to be made, as one has to do in such circumstances.

On one hand there is the moral issue of being compassionate, on the other the desire to safeguard the country by minimising the chances of this disease spreading, of which one way would be to prohibit people with the disease entering and thus increasing the amount of indigenous individuals infected .

So tell me Jimmy do we think with our head or our heart?

You think with your head. Immigrants should be tested for everything possible as a condition of permanent residency and each case assessed on its merit. At the very least this lets you know what sort of health costs you can expect to incur with each particular immigrant. But it costs money, and every time this issue pops up the cost of doing the testing gets in the way of the cost of not doing the testing because the great "NZ taxpayer" is an Ostrich voter, par excellence.

Actually diesel powered vehicles cause more avoidable deaths than immigrants and HIV/AIDS combined thanks to the carcinogenic nature of diesel exhaust particulates. About 400 a year I think.

This is a "Rant or Rave" thread so stand back. Applied for a job lately? They want, they need , to know lot's about you including issues regarding health, residency, bla bla bla. Nothing to do with being nosey. It's more to do with making sure that you are up to the task. Apply for motorbike insurance, get a Gun license, adopt a child, rescue a gerbil from SPCA, it is all the same. They are just trying to establish that you are going to have a reasonable chance of of completing the contract without causing more harm than good.
If you invite someone into your country ( remember the thousands of lives sacrificed to protect this place in living memory ) you surely want to know that there is going to be some sort of net contribution and you surely want to know within reason how much that contribution is likely to be and if any contribution to society is going to come at any predictable cost.
Trust is earned, it isn't a right. If you"ve got fleas I want to know before I lend you my tent. It would be cheaper to sort out the fleas on you first than expect me to then buy flea powder for me and you and all of our respective infectees.
