Do they own the mountain?
Te Heuheu [sp?] was smart enough to realise the gubbinment was going to confiscate it, so instead gifted it to the gubbinment on the proviso it was to remain as a National Park.

NEVER LET THE TRUTH GET IN THE WAY OF A GOOD STORY!
I bet they wont if it was us white men we would have to pay spirtual damage or something or we would get eaten by a Tuniwha
How the hell did an interesting event like the Lahar turn into a group hug about the evils of Maori 'ownership' of a mountain?
Sleep is for the weak.
Well, in the interests of consistency I have to say that the "owners", who ever they may be, Doc, the government and or the local Iwi, took a chance on managing the "risk" involved in the eventual Lahar's natural release and to their combined credit it "worked"!
Personally I thought they were bloody crazy not actively initiating an artificial "controlled" release.
Obviously I was wrong!!
I have not heard of any reported unexpected damage to people or property as a result of the "natural" release, so I congratulate them all on a very satisfactory outcome, well done!Cheers John.
What a pile of mud
