Mate! I am the first person to agree with you regarding being dictated to about when you can work, I have been my own boss for many years, but you do have to earn money? I also hear you loud and clear about family time being precious, shit I wont give up a weekend very often even though my kids have mostly grown and flown, it is "my time" to spend with the person I love. I read you have your lovelies every second weekend, maybe choose a weekend you dont have them to do what has to be done.........or take them with you if it's only a couple of hours.

It's all about supply and demand and all that, isn't it? You're self-employed, so you get to set your charge-out rate. Just stick your weekend charges up until you get enough to compensate you, or you get to work during the week, or you lose the job to someone else ... that's what 'fair' means in todays market, right?

Do you have ya drill saw going and talk on your cellphone at the same time?? For the jobs that require you to work outside "office hours" you just charge them more.

I would love to come to work in jeans, sneakers and T-shirt. But there is a dress code which I have to adhere to.

Nothing is stopping you wearing a suit to your job.

I have simular problems. When we spark up chippers or chainsaws near the CBD, we get complaints faster than a nazi salute at an RSA. Come to think of it we get complaints from people during the week, at weekends or late at night during storms when we are trying to keep the power on or roads open.

We are lucky that we can tell people politely at first that we arent fans of the noise either but its gotta be done. After that we wind em up a little, often they ask for a manager or supervisor or bosses number so I give them it. They get out there phone, make the call and generally dont see the funny side when my cell rings and I answer it infront of them with a goofy look on my face.

Sometimes in life you have to work to others schedule, plenty of hospitality workers live the life of vampires, lots of people doing screwed up shifts, suck it up man, we all have to do it, or not work.

OK, looks like it's just me that sees it as unfair, I'll suck it up and keep doin as I'm told.

Just to be clear, I dont get to choose my own jobs, and I dont get to tell people to fuck off. Although I'm a contractor, it is almost like labour only work, except I'm paid on what I build, rather than the hours. Ergo, we go to the jobs we're given, sometimes we can say the rate is too low, but mostly it's take it or do nothing.

I know a few suit types who think their job is the centre of the universe, and act like it. I'll blow hours on some shitty task involving their fucking email or stupid fuck pictures of something that frankly don't matter in the scheme of things (And by scheme of things I mean I making the company actually tick over).

My coping mechanism is simple: I console myself in the fact that I never kissed one arse, deceived, was born into a privileged position or relied on someones else's talent to do my job. And I have lots outside of work to be happy about. I'm the one with the house with the most coveted address in town, the fucking cool motorbikes, the great girlfriend, a purely educational (not vocational) university education, the adventures and fun on the weekends and moderate debt levels. They, quite frankly, don't have a hell of a lot to be a happy about and are in fact the loosers, not winners in this world.

I'm sure you can come up with a list of things to be happy about that makes those desk jockeys look pathetic in comparison to yourself so you can remind yourself that those foolish neckties working die soulless and incomplete. You on the other hand can sit back on your deathbed and pass away happy that you had a fucking good time when you were not drilling floors.

I'm up at this hour because somebody bought me coffee no.2 and I can't sleep for all the peeing and caffeine.

That is what MP3 players and headphones are for. If the noise can't be drowned out with them then it is probably a bit too loud for day time, I may catty ear plugs but my colleagues don't.

My only recent gripe was with the tosser painter who was working next door yesterday who thought he could get away with smoking in the office.

If the suits have a problem with using power tools and making a noise, the alternative is using handtools, that make far less noise.

The job will take 5 times longer to complete however, but we wouldn't be worried about that because the hourly rate will remain the same during that time...........

    Charge them heaps!
