    Prepare for both.

Stay close to the Island or down the Mornington Peninsula, Frankston area (lots of Kiwis there) Mornington Peninsula is home to over 1,000,000 people.

PI is a good hour plus from the CBD, all freeway and crawling with 5-0 on motorsport weekends.

    Cheers
Hi Titanium. Thanks for the feed back. I noted when I looked at the pic's to see what stand we wanted to be in people were wearing jackets. All good and we will bring stuff for all weather. We are in a house 2k from the track so it is good and close. A nice walk to freshen the mind after a late night. Again thanks for taking the time to reply. Steve

If you enjoy MotoGP on TV then don't go to the Island.

You won't believe how fast those bikes go.

Afterwards TV will never be the same again.

    Siberia is my pick

What sort of weather would you expect? I know it is a hard question but what was it like when you went.
Any other tips for a first timer to the GP?
2005 was pretty hot all weekend, sunblock material.... people we spoke to that had been in 2004 said it was freezing - as pointed out earlier in the thread, it is right on Bass Straight so a very chilly wind can blow straight through you.
There was a shuttle bus service with stops outside a lot of the camping grounds. It ran from 7am - 3am Fri & Sat, 7am - midnight on Sun. It cost $12 (aud) for a day pass (unlimited trips) or $6 (aud) one way, I would assume that they will be doing this but if you want to be certain - PI Bus Lines - ph 0064 3 5952 2500
Don't piss the cops off (and there will be truckloads of them) they carry guns!
You're not allowed to take in hard chily bins, glass or alcohol. Food and alcohol are available on site. If you're not doing the grandstand thing, take a folding camping chair, much more comfortable. Binoculars can come in handy too - we got some for about $60 in duty free.
Nightlife in Cowes was pumping, they closed the main streets, had bands playing etc. All the shops stay open and they just about all have GP Tee Shirts, caps, photos etc for sale - we waited till Monday to buy what we wanted, by that stage, there was still heaps of stuff left and it was all at sale prices.
I'm sure you will have a great time no matter what, the atmosphere is fantastic.

Fantastic. Thanks for that. We will be on the Island till later on the Monday so the cheap stuff will be an option. I might get enough gear to be able to wear it all year, every day.

We decided to stay till Monday cos of the traffic on Sunday.

    Thanks Verity

We went in 2006. Heavy fog and pretty chilly in the morning then it burned off and was fairly warm but then light rain arrived the same time as the main event MotoGP race which made it very confusing to know who was where (they were pitting in and changing to their wet bikes). Real 4 seasons in one day stuff (a lot like NZ really). Siberia seemed to be the best place to watch from (we had general admission tickets and wandered around the track a lot). Stayed in Melbourne and got the bus down.

    Budget minded digs ....

    OK guys and gals.

There are a number of budget places around Phillip Island if you want to stay.

I would get in quick if this is your scene ..... .

I will post some detailed motel / hotel digs soon.

    Cheers

Pack your togs. Have a swim on the beach at Cowes and then a gellato and beer to follow. Magic place, Phillip Island. And windy.

So is Siberia the place to watch the racing from? So we should grab some stand tickets for Siberia?

    nah

Just get there real early and bring some cheap foldie chairs from warehouse..we sat at Siberia all day last year best spot for sure..close to food, loos, and so close to the track
Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead
Do not walk ahead as I may not follow.
Do not walk beside me as the path is narrow
In fact FU*K off and leave me alone

Hmm, I'm thinking that might be the best bet for me. I've made a few enquiries and it seems that motel accomodation is scarce at best. Now I'll just have to figure out how to get my bike from here to there
