You just can't beat a Ruger 10/22 for serious small-caliber shooting. That's what you need to be getting. Buy him one of the ones in stainless with a synthetic stock, and slap a Bushnell or Leupold 3X scope on top if your budget stretches to it.

For the suppressor, cut out the middleman - just give MAE Engineering in Glenfield a call on 09 443 2536.

Come to think of it, if you buy the rifle from Sportways Gun Shed in Mt Eden, they'll probably give you a decent package deal on a matching MAE suppressor, so check in with them, too.

Whats so great about a MAE suppressor? (other than them being just down the road from me!)

Also are suppressors pretty much one size fits all? As I may have to get the meat for the feast I won't be able to chip much more $$ in so I might just get him the suppressor instead?(depending on how much our other mates chip in)

Im pretty sure Ive heard that MAE makes the supressors for the SAS and various other law enforcement/ military groups, I know for a fact that they are very high quality products.

I suspect that the majority of SAS silencers come from the manufacturer, eg the integral units such as on the MP5

I think you'll find that with the amount of shooting that the SAS does, that the manufacturers supressor would wear out rather quickly and that the MAE supressors would be more cost effective than getting a new one sent from Germany. MAE supressors quality would probably out do the manufacturers supressors as that is what the company specifies in, while the manufacturer specifies in making the actual firearm.
