I had my first pillion experience on Tuesday night.

On the back of a big, fat and downright sexual C90 Boulevard.

Took an ambulance back to Mt Welly station after a motorsport event, and on the way back, Blue_Thunder conned me into swinging by my house and grabbing my bike gear. Gods, I was crapping myself - never been on the 2IC post before, thought I was going to do the big fall-off-and-die thing!

But, as it turns out being a rider has its advantages when pillioning, leaning into the corners comes REAL natural, and after the first couple of km's (going from Mt Welly to Papalura - ~25km) I was loving it!

It was even more fun after the throttle inadvertantly opened, and small ice crystals formed on my visor *cough cough*

And all said and done, Blue_Thunder handles his bike bloody nicely, so that made it better.

So all you pillion virgins, get on the back and have a go - it's not that bad

After a couple of nasty hospital-visiting cage crashes, both of which I was front seat passenger, I have serious trust issues when it comes to be in charge of a vehicle...

It was fortunate I know the rider and how well he rides...

Yes, I did notice that little bit of drool and the twitchiness of Donor when I visited him with Daisy at his "work" place (the term "work" is used very loosely here - I think I caught him doing disgusting things with his niece! ... sharing a ciggie and laying around like government painters!)

The funny thing is, two weeks ago, I had my first pillion ride to pick up my little ol'Hornet. Damn good fun, even the bit when the suspension bottoms out due to my fat git arse!

They had duel wheels, handled it well.... come out with me in a Merc.. DriftX are all pussies compared to A51 and Greenlane interchange..

Only thing about the DAFs was that the airbags in the suspension tended to lose pressure at the worst times, such as when you REALLY needed to corner hard.

Probably indicative of the average south auckers stature though, always tended to be the ones on the left...

I get very, very nervous when pillioning. I find it very hard to relax, whether I'm on the back of a sportsbike, or a big fat wallowing cruiser. I went on the back of my father's V-Star 1100 when I was visiting him in Australia; I think this was the worst. My father is an ex-offroad racing (cages, that is) competitor, so he doesn't necessarily ride or drive in the nana-ish way I do. On top of that, his bike's a cruiser, with low clearance and soft suspension one-up, let alone two-up. Crapping myself every time we went around roundabouts, all kinds of hard stuff scraping.

I think I like having control. Same reason I'm not overly keen on amusement park rides; it's different when you can control your own destiny or gut-dropping moments, but when you don't know what's coming up and can't control it, it's a different story.

Trust is the big thing for me. I will only go pillion with people I trust 100% and only take pillions who trust me 100% (there was one exception, but I wont go there).

If you trust the rider, you relax. With a pillion, I make dam sure the pillion knows just how much control they actually have back there! I had a pillion once who was still 'learning' and started leaning for each corner before I did, I was just about upright with my pillion steering the flipping bike! ...was not good. She got a stern talking too!

As long as you dont take anyone that weighs more than you untill you are experienced taking a pillion and trust that the person know what they are doing, you should be fine taking a pillion.

Ive had someone on the back who was 20kgs heavier than me, and that was tough work, was fine hooning along the mway but around all the one way streets and footpaths in the cbd... a challange

My mad cousin put me off pillioning back about '72, when he took me from Howick to Warkworth on his Suzuki 250 Hustler! How we made it I still don't know! His piece-de-resistance was cruising at 5,000rpm in first up the main street when we got there and then yanking the throttle so my helmet almost whacked the ground when my feet shot up under the handlebars!
