Hated it. Fell asleep watching it, had a great dream. Woke up and felt disappointed to know that not only had the weak plot played out exactly as I had thought......it was still on.
1/10
Fast and Furious 5
Give it an awesome, but not epic 8.5/10 The Rock gives it a nice brutal edge at times. Bit much lovey dovey character depth in it for my liking in this sorta movie, but may appeal to more people than the last one because of it.

The girl with the dragon tattoo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Girl_with_the_Dragon_Tattoo_(2009_film))(2009) .
Made from the first of a trilogy of books (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Girl_with_the_Dragon_Tattoo)by Stieg Larsson.
This first movie was fully Swedish language with subtitles.
40 years ago, the niece of a massive corporate's CEO disappears. He suspects that a member of his large family killed her and every year taunts him by sending a pressed flower from a different location around the world.
He hires a now-discredited investigative journalist to see if he can discover anything more from this cold case.
What is found is corporate corruption, nazi history, rape, extreme sadism and murders.
Thank goodness there is no singing, hollywood CGI effects or American actors. Anywhere!
My "guide" for this movie was providing a bit of background from the book as we watched and the book is seriously reccommended (apparently).
The books were written for the author's pleasure and were only published after his death. A statement on Swedish history and current societal issues.
The second and third movies are in english and will be looked forward to if they are up to the same calibre as this.
the books are brilliant, the first film is fantastic, unfortunately the last two not so much: different director, plus they had to excise bunches of subplots and stuff to get to a reasonable length. the new director didnt have the pacing right, and there was this attempt to focus on Blomqvist as the hero, when in fact he is merely the sidekick: Tonto to Lisbeth's Lone Ranger. Noomi Rapace is brilliant all the way through though. Definitely see the later two films, and let us know what you think of them.

Ahhh Zombies (aka Wasting Away) - 2007
A zombie movie with a difference - a budgetish (light) horror comedy shown from the zombies perspective.
I love zombie movies (dawn of the dead, land of the dead, shaun of the dead, zombieland, return of the living dead etc etc) so I sparked up a doob and watched this. Was it any good? Fuck knows I was wasted. Did I enjoy it? Yep.
Suck on that film review Kate Rodger.

Equilibrium (2002)
Watched this badass flick for the tenth time last night. Never get's old. The story is great and the action is top notch. If you liked The Matrix and Children of Men you'll love it.
Thanks for the advice dude. I recall when this came out it was compared to The Matrix and I thought it would just be a rip-off so I never watched it. Watched it tonight and thought it was very good. Quite a good social commentary while still being a very decent action/sci-fi flick.
And I loved the epic fight the nemisis :D

bought the two disc special edition of this. Great movie though it was made in the '60's so it is s l o w and very expository for a modern audience. Lee Marvin, charles Bronson, Donald Sutherland, Ernest Borgnine, you can't ask for a better cast.
Loved it, one of the classic war movies.

I read too much about this and formed the opinion it would suck, so didnt bother seeing it on the big screen. Mate lent me the Blu Ray.
Its actually bloody good. Quentin tells a good story, its well paced, has the little quirks (yes, the foot fetish) we expect, the cast is pretty good. I like Bradley George, Eli Roth is great, and Christoph Waltz is excellent as a deranged Nazi.
total escapism, well executed.
Its not Pulp Fiction (my favourite film) but nothing is.

Finally got to see Paul. I gotta say I enjoyed it. Crying funny in places, little touches of sci-fi's past dotted around, bit of slap-stick in places (part of the charm, for me), plenty of cheap giggles and a good enough script.

Attack on Leningrad (2009).
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0432314/
The WW2 German attack on Russia left the city of Leningrad surrounded and under artillery shelling for close to three years. The only supply lines were across the frozen lake Ladoga and other extremely erratic methods of supply. The population starved and approximately 1.5 million died that way.
The movie portrays a british newspaper reporter who is presumed killed and left in the city while her fellow reporters bugger off back to Moscow. Her survival is the essence of the movie.
I had forgotten how well the Russian movies do "bleak" and this dragged on for 110mins.
Hopefully some Americans will watch it and appreciate the "non Hollywood" point of view...
Edit: Subtitled as well... yay.

Have you read Antony Beevor's book "STALINGRAD"? It is one of the best war history books I've ever read. He's also a very readable military historian. I have his book on the Spanish Civil War to read after I finished the book I'm reading

The Other Guys (2010)
Cop comedy with Will Farrell & Mark Wahlberg co-starring/cameoing numerous other "name" actors like Michael Keaton, Eve Mendes, Samuel L Jackson, Dwayne Johnson and Steve Coogan.
Funniest Will Farrell movie I've seen since Anchorman (which isn't too hard really) but I enjoyed it. A couple of genuine laughs, lot's of silliness, and a number of weird & funny pop culture references including grand theft auto.
A solid 7/10 for me.

The Hangover II.
For those who had a good laugh at the original, get your arses to the theatre!!!
Essentially the same plot (surprise, surprise...) but on a whole new level. The first part is setting the stage for what eventuates and it is good.
Sequals are rarely able to live up to expectations but this one does not fall into that category.
Once again, there are "those photos" at the end while the credits are rolling. You will be holding your sides through all of these!!!
The reaction of the audience was hilarious when the nightclub "dressing room scene" happened.:killingme

Holy E.T remake Batman!
A nice story line that keeps you guessing for most of the film. Shades of E.T, Stand By Me and even a touch of Predator for good measure.
7.5/10
This movie is a bit of a drag and bland. Nothing much happens in the first half, it's just bedtime story telling. But the effects (both visual and audio) later were quite impressive, that's for sure.
Story telling and illustration was much better than TF2. But it's not so hard making improvement from what originally was rubbish, is it?
It's a mix between Terminator Salvation and Armageddon. Oh who am I kidding, it's Michael Bay.
Lots of nice cars. That's about the only thing I liked about this movie (and the Chicago free fall air jump).
Unless you are REALLY fussy about 3D effects, big screen and huge sound, you can let this one slide. Save your money and watch it on Blu-Ray.
The only thing that doesn't transform in this movie is Michael Bay.
Would I recommend it to my friends? No. But I'm quite sure they'll watch it anyways.
Would I watch it again? I'll watch it again when I choose to watch Transformers 2 (which is.... never?)

Absolutely brutal, gore and creeping. However it is not as good as the other Saw series. It is the least twisting and clever, also most of the times it's (puzzles) are more pointless and unrelevant to past series.
Too much of "been there, done that" I guess...?

It is somewhat slow but it is steady and thorough (step by step, illustrated clearly like a walkthrough). The feeling of tension is very much alive due to the choice of story character. It is amazing and well made, in my opinion. Recommended.

It's clean, efficient and effective (funny words to describe a movie). It doesn't tend to drag, so that's why it is clean.

It was alright but nothing I'd rush back to see twice. The audience view being entirely inside the tank, except for brief cross hair views looking out through the periscope, became tedious. I liked the 1988 ' Beast of war' far more, about a Russian tank that got lost from its' unit in Afganistan.

Actually, now that I think a bit more about it, it does rate up there. My post was my first reaction to the bits that put me off it. I think the disconnect is you went in expecting Fast and Furious 5.5, and its absolutely nothing like that. It has a quite noir-ish, and very 1970's feel. It reminded me quite a bit of VANISHING POINT in tone and some of the Steve McQueen films (BULLITT mostly): kind of that man alone, reserved hero type. Clint Eastwood-ish in a lot of ways.

heh, I'm not fussed if it's men or women in the movie. The three you mention are completely different movies, all different situationally, which I guess enhances the humour of its context. A "chick" flick I did find fackin hilarious was The Sweetest Thing... and to a certain extent Miss Congeniality. Details are excellent - the cars and (especially) the sidecar outfit. Check out the adjustable friction dampers on the bikes girder forks (anorak moment).
Animation is superb, sometimes very difficult to tell the difference between CGI and real. The TinTin charcter looks very human, the other "actors" are more caricatured (eg Haddocks big nose)
3D effects are not overly in your face, more of a depth of layered images (if you recall the old Viewmaster 3D reels, more like that)
We saw it at the Ascot cinema in Upper Hutt, which uses the Panastereo technology. Glasses from other theatres wont work, but they only charge $2 for glasses.

If you ever wondered after watching the first Human Centipede "Hmmm what if the 'centipede' was longer...?" then this is the film for you. The story/ plot is simple. Just a long-ass human centipede, a dozen to be exact. Seriously that's it. The story goes like: A mentally retarded British looking midget kidnaps 12 people and stitches them all up.
If you want to see a dozen long human centipede "eating" and "digesting" all at simultaneously, this is the film for you.
If you want to see cheap violence and full of fake blood, this is the film for you.
If you want to see a film that pushes boundary, redefines the limit of "legal" in motion picture history, this is the film for you. (A Seriban Film pars)
If you want to see a film that tries to pursue within deepest, the darkest part of sick human minds, this is the film for you.
You've been warned. I was warned too but then my curiosity got the better of me.

Was a good movie, I'd got for an 8 as the "coincidences" didn't really do it for me and the dude in the track suit really put me off :).
In Time - 7.5/10, loses 1.0 (yes, should be 8.5) as Justin Timberlake is in it and really shouldn't have been imho, but hey. Shame really as the concept is something very familiar but done with a different slant, and done well, even if not acted overly well. Won't give it away, but it gives new meaning to the phrase, have you got two minutes. Iffen you can get past Timbersnake, I recommend it.

The Guard. Enjoyed it but a bit slow and nothing exceptional. Pleased I waited for the DVD
Being fond of animals I had to check out War horse
I later checked out film review sites on War Horse. Some recognised it as intended - good old fashioned entertainment and rated it worthwhile. Most others missed the point and blasted it for being too sentimental or for NOT being about the human suffering of war.
Idiots. It wasn't meant to be about the human element of war. It was about war as it effected the animals forced into our warfare. If you want to see a persons view of war then go see any one of the hundreds of other war movies made, including Spielbergs own Saving Pt Ryan and Shindler's List. Next they will criticise Star wars for being set in outer space.
Putting aside the over sentimental aspects War Horse was a good movie and well worth the big screen viewing. Brilliant war scenes like only Spielberg can do. Just when it may seem a bit candy coated at times Spielberg pulls the carpet out from under you.

Made in America Crips and Bloods
Crips and Bloods doco from Stacey Peralta, who did Dog Town and Z Boys, which documented the emergence of the new school skating movement of the seventies in LA
In Made in America, he expands his honest portrayal of LA gang life, this time with the real McCoy's. The Watts riots and the more recent 1990 LA riots are reviewed along with an extensive sociological response to the issues of urban gangs in America
Check all the many black gang members with old english family surnames, and the heart wrenching interviews with mothers of the many killed very young black men.
A nice paced and reasonably accurate portrayal of some large LA gangs
'Narrated by Academy Award-winning actor Forest Whitaker, Dogtown and Z-Boys director Stacy Peralta's unflinching documentary chronicles one of the longest-running civil wars in the history of America though a deeply humanistic lens. The Bloods and Crips are two of South Los Angeles' most notorious African-American gangs. While many outsiders simply cannot understand the decades-long cycle of despair and destruction that has come to define their daily lives, the individuals who comprise each gang......'

Come on now, I like The English Patient and The Horse Whisperer.
Well after, decades of watching movies, I absolutely recommend a recent release "Warrior' the local Lads at our Video store have been telling me I must watch this movie, their pick of the year.
So tonight the teenage daughters were out, wife distracted, I'm buggered from work, seriously knocking back the wine-o, so gave in and took it home. What Rocky did in the 1980s to say boxing movies can be worth watching, Warrior takes it up mega fold.
I have liked Nick Nolte throughout his career but tonight he excelled. Only a supporting role but this movie is absolutely the bees knees in emotional drama, action and total WOW! Blown away, must tell the guys at the shop.. well done. Leaped to one of my all time most enjoyable movies
In case you are lost it's about two troubled brothers, their horrible upbringing by a drunk Father/fighter trainer and caged ring fighting, but the story is much more than the fighting. Please give it a chance, watch it! Enjoy!

Given the script was co-written by Joss Whedon, and he directed, he gets a big old "Attaboy!" from me. (the BUFFY, ANGEL, FIREFLY SERENITY, DOLLHOUSE Joss Whedon)
So weird...normally you and I have quite similar taste in movies and music, granted I haven't seen it, its just the sort of thing I would never even bother with!

Grave of the fireflies - Gut wrenchingly, and sad. Saw it when I was young but now I saw it again, the feeling is totally different.
It's a story about Japanese siblings, the brother taking care of his younger sister during WW2 era.

would like to re see it in 2d though as I thought some of it was a bit fast for 3d but then possibly that's my brain

Sick film. If you are anyhow claustrophobic then you will find this movie a nightmare to watch.
I love how this film makes you so attached to the character. Such tense.

Men In Black 3 - mmmm, funny as hell in parts, cool ending but so-so overall. I'd give it 7/10.
The Avengers - ah yep, can agree with all comments I've read up above. Funny as hell, tricky to incorporate the various parts and even though lots of FX it wasn't over the top. Saw it in 3D and that might have helped. Scarlett was only window dressing in my view, her acting was left behind by the other big names. I'd give it 9.5/10.

MIB3 was good but not great, but I didnt feel the need to choke the counter bitch at Hoyts and demand my money back.
I enjoyed GOOD FOR NOTHING as well. Although some definite moral ambiguity and a bit slow. but good on them for giving it a crack.

Such tenseful, adventure thriller. I really enjoyed it as I like this kind of philosophical thought provoking films (especially with Liam Neeson in it).
I wish I can understand the movie better but I'm not smart enough...
This is one of those movies I'd like to meet the director and have a nice long chat as to know more about their film making.

Yeah really enjoyed Prometheus.
Need to find a website of intellectuals anylysing it to answer a few gaps. One of those movies that left more questions than answers. The ending of course left it wide open for a sequel to a prequel, if that's possible.
Spoiler alert : they cocked up the closing scene though with the space jockey dying from a tummy burster in the wrong location. In the beginning of Alien his body is sitting in 'that chair' in his curved half circle ship with his guts split open, but in the end of Prometheus he dies lying on the floor of the Prometheus escape pod? How could they make such a clever movie and mix up such a simple but key sequence of continuation.

The 9th Company - looks interesting - ruskies vs ragheads. Where does one find it?
I watched 9th Company last night. Saw it on the shelf in the local video ezy, it had a couple of recommendation quotes on the cover from names i find more trustworthy than others (i think one was channel4).
In all i really enjoyed it. Some dumber moments, but the production was good both visual and audio, and it didn't seem to be as biased as similar films from the US. Story of some Soviet new recruits heading over to Afghanistan. It's kind of similar to full metal jacket.
One suggestion - watch it with english subtitles. The english dubbing is cringe worthy!

Um, they were at pains to point out that there were many ships and many space jockeys. also the planet (actually moon) they were on was LV223 and the action in the first alien film was LV4... from memory.
There were a bunch of othe plot holes, but dont think too hard about it, just go see it. Best use of 3D ever too

A B-17 group is based in North Africa, with missions bombing Italy.
The visuals are like those out of Microsoft's combat flight simulator... 2000 edition. CGI has not been used well (at all?) and it shows.
The props used are rather plain (cockpit scenes especially) and if this is a "big budget" movie, then I'll be surprised.
The similarities of MASH were attempted in the camp, especially with the still for brewing alcohol.
Basically, don't see this movie. It's crap.

It started off a bit slow and after hearing that it had received bad reviews I thought I was in for a loooooooong movie... but once it kicked into gear, not too long into the movie, it kicked into gear. Not all out and out thumpin bumpin and chasin bad guys, which added something to the movie imho. 9/10

You were right, it takes some time to jump on the Nolan-train. Also you were right, I couldn't hear 60% what Bane said due to his mask (40% for the Batman). Next time I will need subtitles.
Overall it is a very good movie. Indubitably Christopher Nolan (and his brother).

The Amazing Spiderman: another movie that was slow to get going, the only difference with this one was it really didn't get going... it plodded along for what seemed like 3 hours re-telling, albeit with a slightly different bent, the story of how he was bitten and how Uncle Ben bit the bullet... after that was another 5 or 6 hours of padding in between Spiderman doing not much. There were a few giggles, but on the whole I was disappointed... t'was a bit like watching a mini series in 5 minute bites. Anyhoo, 6/10.

An interesting true story. Spike Lee has not stuck to the book and in places there are massive holes in the story.
Buffalo Soldiers (black troops) are involved in the Italian campaign and a section get themselves lost behind enemy lines. They link up with Italian villagers after finding a young boy on the battlefield.
The start and end of the movie is based in the 1980's, for quite relevant reasons...
