Oh yea, there was talk of a Sunday ride up Weston Valley Road again. What sort of time you thinking, Gazza?
Is that a particularly long/difficult route?.. I just got my bike back yesterday, and longwheely has done a fantastic job of fixing it up, so I definitely plan on coming along on Wednesday, but if this is a route that's doable by a novice rider on a little 225, I'd love to come along on Sunday as well.

There hasn't been a Rossi on any of the Sunday rides that are organised, there is a gravel section though, but I do not know if this gravel section is any harder than the previous Sunday ride that involved gravel. Someone will know...

Considerably more goat like than what you rode the other week. Didn't stop an FJ1200(?), Bonnie and a GL145 from riding over it though.

BK, Dyers, Gebbies, Rittle Liver for refreshments, Western Valley Rd, to where ever??????
This will not be a race!!!!!!!!!
If you want to see how fast you can go, try that at Ruapuna. It's safer there, with no traffic coming the other way and better road surfaces.
This is a chance for those riders who want to gain some experience with gravel. All are welcome, particularly newer riders.

Most of the ride is on very good roads.
There is a stretch of gravel, which you do not have to do if you choose not to. The choice will be yours if you wish turn back and someone will acompany you if you want.
One of the riders has a Honda GL145 and he has had a lot of fun with no problems. So your bike should be more than adequate for the job

Yes thanks GP, I was using all 74hp and Tom went past me like I was standing still.
I have had the spokes all replaced on the back wheel on the old shitter and we are back on the road. I went for a ride without a spare but the bike needs the ballast.

My GL145 went really nicely over the Western Valley Rd. Was a little fast though at one point. Lost the back end and had to catch my bike as it fell to the right. Lucky I didn't twist my knee:doh:

Go the mighty 145!
But seriously a 225 will be sweet. If you start to lose it, atleast on a smaller bike you can stick you foot out and catch it. Do that on a big bike and you'll break your leg!

Heh, given the fact I weigh more than my bike, you've probably got significantly better power to weight on your 145, despite the staggering 80cc difference. ;)
But yeah, I do plan on coming along tomorrow - I can always turn back when we get to the gravel if I don't feel up to it.

Dude, gravel is really easy once you get used to it. This is the perfect chance to practice. There will be plenty of people going really slow over the gravel. You won't be alone.

Yes come along tomorrow. These Sunday rides are meant to be fun. You need go only as far as you are comfortable. I would much rather you turned back safely, than push on and have a prang.
Having said that, a challenge is always the way to learn more about riding and gaining skills. (Experience is something I usually gain 3 seconds AFTER I needed it.)
See you tomorrow ........ weather permitting.

I was also looking at a car wanting to pull out so if he had break light i wouldnt have crashed but i wasnt paying enough attention so yea your choice

If you guys talk to Darrrel up at Scargill for parts, he does not suffer fools. He will NOT negotiate on price, if he wants x amount for a part thats the price. He has a vast array of older jap bike parts and is willing to help, but make sure if you send him information via pic, that they are small files. A part number is better as he has comprehensive files on his stock. Where he is located there is no broardband, thus dail up speed is all he gets.
Darell will help lf you are genuine, came across as a clever person looking for a bargin he will tell you to go get fucked!Remembeber this is a guy that sells bike parts as a hobby, not an income, and recieves better offers from overseas customers. He may be slow on responce to your request. He runs a 400+ hectare farm solo. thus has limited time for fools and wankers.
Putting that aside, if you treat him with respect and not be a knobb he will help to the best of his knowlag which is vast
I am sure when he gets his collection togeather and opens his collection to public view, we will all want to view it, as it contains over 300 bikes.
I might see you tomorrow if the weather suits my ego.

Here are a couple of photos I took just after the rather gnarly dirt section (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Western+Valley+Rd&daddr=Western+Valley+Rd&hl=en&geocode=FagoZP0d0ppMCg%3BFfK5Zf0dJN9MCg&mra=me&mrcr=0&mrsp=1,0&sz=15&sll=-43.66781,172.815542&sspn=0.026852,0.066047&ie=UTF8&ll=-43.716279,172.882233&spn=0.214645,0.528374&z=12)...
My shoes & pants got rather muddy:
229756
As did my bike:
229757229758
Dave3362's bike threw a fair bit of mud straight up at him, courtesy of the missing front half of his mudguard, lucky for him he has a pretty substantial screen:
229759229760
The ride was great fun, and seeing Dave3362 maneuver that huge and heavy beast over corrugated, wet and slippery gravel was quite a sight.
I also just wanted to say thanks to Flip for making sure I didn't get lost - it was nice having a slightly slower sidecar I could just about keep up with over the hilly parts where I was less confident... Plus I'm sure Ted enjoyed being able to come along on the ride - he definitely appeared to be enjoying his ride in the sidecar.

... thought it would be easy to find parts for this model in New-ZEAL-land  but seriously, try this link if you have trouble http://www.motorcyclewrecker.co.nz/...
Cheers for the link, I also found this link on google; it's interesting, I emailed everyone on that page that had a 'contact us' link, so far the only one that has replied to me was the Hills one, (an Australian wreckers). And they said no we don't have any parts, so it wasn't like they were replying to say they had the part I need. I somehow have a feeling the NZ wreckers are not going to email me back (even just to say no we don't have that part would be nice)
The only other place that wasn't on that list is
http://www.vicwreck.com.au/ OR: http://www.victorianmotorcyclewreckers.com.au/3.html
And it looks like these people do have the part I'm after, but not that much cheaper then what Yamaha quoted me for what I am assuming is a new part vs a 2nd hard part.

Thought I had fixed my puncture ("nail" looked like part of a bicycle spoke). Got away about 7:30 at a fair clip. The repair lasted until about 2 kms after Millers road exit, then things went wobbly. Hauled up, tyre was soft and hot. Some bikes stopped after a bit and turns out they had joined up with WNR at the Wheatsheaf. Think sammcj was one of them. If so thanks mate and pass on my thanks to the other two. I owe you some CO2 bottles. Anyway, another repair and slow trip back to Halswell for air and home....:niceone:

May need a good welder/machinist in the near future. Anyone know someone?
Rear Cagiva sprockets are rare as hens teeth. For what ever reason you cannot get aftermarket rear sprockets for my bike and Im not even going to price an OEM one because Triumph NZ suck and it'll probably take then 6-9 months to get it in. Anyway Im now in the hunt for a blank sprocket or failing that I'll find a 45 tooth sprocket and get the center of it cut out and the center of my original one welded in.
So yea, if anyone knows someone send me a pm or something.

There use to be a place that made sprockets in CHCH as I us to use them to make my sprockets for my Racing Side Car as you could not buy anything close to what I needed.
They have moved and do not know where they are now.
Ask around at machine shops and you should be able to find them.
You will have to get more that one made to make it worth while as the setting up cost
can be high.
I think about three sprockets makes the price good and that would keep you happy for a while.
This would be better than modifying by cutting and welding I think.
You maybe lucky and get a sprocket you could drill holes and cut out the centre to suit as this would be better I think.
You use to be able to buy blank sprockets from Trevor Kirby (SP?) (Budget Motorcycles) years ago.
Maybe they can still get you one.

It was pissing down at home at 5.30 so I didn't bother getting the bike out. It's not nice if I get wet going to BK and putting on my monkey suit and full face just spoils the run for me.
How did it go?
15 or so of us had a good ride up to the Greta. No rain. We kept gaining numbers on the way there. Thanks to CJ for leading.
Anyone interested in a Summit Road ride on Sunday????
BK, Halswell, Gebbies, round the bays to Port, Evans pass, Summit Road through to Gebbies, with refreshments at the Wheatsheaf.

It was good, fortunately all the rain had stopped by the time we were setting off, so the weather was nice, aside from the wind.
Thanks very much to Peeteey and (I think) Mully Clown for following me back to Christchurch, and then home, respectively, to stop me getting rear ended due to a dead tail light, I hope I didn't inconvenience you guys too much, and I'll get that bulb replaced tomorrow.
Also thanks to gloplg for riding slowly so I could keep up, and especially for the advice - I'm feeling so much more confident and in control through the corners now.

May need a good welder/machinist in the near future. Anyone know someone?
Rear Cagiva sprockets are rare as hens teeth. Finding a blank sounds the best option, sprockets are normally hardened and welding them could potentially stuff that up, its a shame you have so much issues with getting parts.

So the ducati isn't so bad after all, at least I can get aftermarket bits for that.
A blank sprocket would be ideal, or failing that get a sprocket to suit your chain and have it redrilled with another set of holes to suit your wheel. Have PM'd you the details of someone that may be able to help.

Not a problem at all. There is a reflector which most people should see and the brake light still works. I chewed through heaps of bulbs on my Scorpio. Buy a spare and keep it under the seat, especially when you go in for the practical road tests.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions and pms.
At this stage Im hoping to go for a blank sprocket. 2nd choice will be the cutting and welding option. Getting one made sounds rather expensive but time will tell I guess.
When I do my chain and sprockets this time around Im going to invest in a scott oilier so hopefully it will be a yonks and yonks before I need another rear sprocket.

Yeah, between the two marked cars around Woodend and Amberly, and then the black unmarked Commodore we went past in the Weka pass, I was somewhat nervous about being pulled over for doing 100 on a learners, but fortunately they either didn't notice the L-Plate, or didn't care. I was wondering whether any of you had been pinged by the unmarked one, but since I was quite slow and well behind the rest of you, I guess you guys had probably already reached the Scargill turnoff and stopped for the regroup by the time he went past you.

Not up to Peeteey's standard but I don't think it's too bad for a $130 video cam! Have to completely over-ride the original sound because it's nothing but loud wind-noise.
Goes a bit dark at one stage as well when riding into the sun and it can't compensate for the extra bright light,
Hope you's like it anyway!

FYI
The steve longley memorial "round the bays" is on this sunday waitangi day. Only found out today he died from a heart attack mid december 2010. And how we joked years ago when he started the annual bike run, 'Ya not dead yet steve' ...guess he gets the last laugh now lol.
Been out of contact and missed the last couple of runs, but always generally a good turn out of bears bikes and classic's (100++), leaves parkhouse tavern approx 11am and returns for bbq there late afternoon.
I'm attending this year, as I missed the old buggers funeral and his hot lap round ruapuna in the back of his old ute. One of lifes characters and supporter of bears racing.

Very interesting TA. Are you surreptitiously suggesting that those inclined towards riding outside the square might consider adding "river crossing" to their skillset?
I'm not sure if its still there but I recall a crossing at Coes Ford on the way to Selwyn Huts where we might "get our feet wet" (pun intended ) on a Wednesday or Sunday, a few minutes ride from Tai Tapu.

Don't know what else there is near Coes Ford but Coes Ford itself is now one of those half bridge half ford things where the water passes through pipes under the road most the time and only occasionally goes over the top.

Sounds good to me, what route were you thinking?.. Seems to me that the best route is out via Loburn and Ashley Gorge, then for those of us returning to Christchurch, the Old West Coast rd on the way back, like so (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Moorhouse+Ave&daddr=-43.53982,172.65011+to:-43.310133,172.5983814+to:-43.23253,172.37962+to:-43.29684,172.1983919+to:Main+St+to:-43.39532,172.06399+to:-43.53839,172.56836+to:Moorhouse+Ave&hl=en&geocode=FXKiZ_0dE0pKCg%3BFZSiZ_0dfm5KCikPBOb69Ykxb THAUnRMhu8AEw%3BFcsja_0dbaRJCil1LQA-j5QxbTFgaXtMhu8AEw%3BFe5SbP0d5E1GCinrYFMj-ecxbTFgbThMhu8AEw%3BFbhXa_0d94lDCin5bHSM4R0ubTGhTH tMhu8AEw%3BFcBKa_0dNDVDCg%3BFQjXaf0d9nxBCimpKVZ6bw UubTExbJJMhu8AEw%3BFSqoZ_0dKC9JCinv77CUsYoxbTHAXJd Mhu8AEw%3BFYCiZ_0dekVKCg&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=2&sz=16&via=1,2,3,4,6,7&sll=-43.309207,172.599657&sspn=0.013569,0.033023&ie=UTF8&ll=-43.305444,172.595043&spn=0.054028,0.132093&z=14).
If you want to include some cool/interesting country roads in that you could include Coopers Creek and View Hill between Oxford and the Waimak Gorge.
May not be high speed roads I suspect though. Only seen a couple myself and thought I must come back and explore sometime.
Looks nice to me on google maps when I drop the little man down for street view.

That was pretty much just a suggestion of the most interesting route to go to/from Oxford, based on gloplg suggesting Oxford as the destination.
As far as going between Oxford and the Waimak gorge via Coopers Creek and View Hill, my memory is fairly poor, but I grew up in Oxford, and I'm pretty sure there are some dirt road patches, and at least one ford on that route, which I suspect would put some people off. If memory serves, Woodside rd becomes gravel about 20m after you cross the bridge over the Eyre river, and there's a fairly small ford a little past Kowhai.

I'm out too this week, both Wed and Sun. I'm not going to cope well ...

That is pretty much what they normally do when going to Oxford as far as I know, but haven't done that run with the WNRs to be sure.
The route addition I suggested is all seal as far as i can see by dropping the street view guy around it on Google maps.
There is still some nice gravel in the area but no, as far as I can tell you don't need to use it to go through View Hill and Coopers Creek any more.

Normal route out to oxford is through loburn and ashley gorge, so coming from the opposite direction from transalpers suggestion. Coopers creek/view hill looks like a nice detour on the way home though, if one was heading over the waimak gorge bridge (perhaps for the tagorama game for instance) and home down the old west coast road.
A suggestion for the ride out from me, either turn off at the second motorway overbridge and head the back way into rangiora (more interesting than lineside road) or all the way up the motorway and through tuahiwi to avoid half of rangiora altogether.
I might be along tonight, depending on several things.......

How much unsealed road is there beyond Diamond Harbour if we want to go right around the coastline to Akaroa? i.e. through Purau, Port Levy, Pigeon Bay etc. Have friends down from Tauranga who are keen to follow that route and I've only ever been out to Akkers once via Little River route.
Thanks in advance guys :)

From Purau to Pigeon Bay is gravel as far as I know, would be a bit of a mission I would imagine.
Going out to Akkers via little river is the way we usually go, really nice ride just a bit flat and straight for a while at the start. Scenery is pretty awesome though.
Hope that helped :)

...How much unsealed road is there beyond Diamond Harbour if we want to go right around the coastline to Akaroa?...Port Levy/Puari to Pigeon Bay is gravel. After that you got to stay on the Summit Rd otherwise all the joiners are gravel gravel gravel.
There are sealed roads dropping down in to some of the bays off the summit but you have to return back up them to the Summit to avoid the gravel between bays.

If you are expecting a road such as the one around Lyttleton Harbour I think you will be disappointed. Most of the roads around Banks Peninsula tend to radiate out from the Summit Road, which starts at Hilltop and goes around to above Akaroa.
The road between Purau and Pigeon Bay is mostly sealed apart from about 8 to 10k between Port Levy and Pigeon Bay. Western Valley Road between Port Levy and Little River is also gravel. These roads are usable as long as care is taken.
Unless you are used to travelling on gravel I would suggest the Summit Road from Hilltop with sidetrips into some of the bays, the scenery is spectacular and well worth the effort.
Travel safely and enjoy!!

Hey Peach, nice to hear you're still alive!
I have no doubt you can ride the 600 and would ride it well but they are a powerful bike and can bite pretty hard when you least expect it. They're not designed to be passive and learner friendly, they're a race bike at heart!
I personally wouldn't recommend it for several reasons:
1) It's a serious machine and I wouldn't want to see you hurt!
2) You will be uninsured on it and liable for ANY damage you cause to yourself and others. Imagine if you cause an accident, you'll have to pay for ALL the damage. If it's not your fault the insurance will not pay for anything 'cause you're not legal on it.
They love finding ways of squirming out of having to pay.
3) The rozzers (:Police:) will also have a field day with you ...
4) A good 250 can also be a serious machine and you can avoid (hopefully) all the above issues.
If you like the race bikes then a good, modern GSXR or Ninja could be good choices. There are LOTS of Ninja 250s around for a reason I guess :)
Just my 2c, hope it helps some ...

At least 3 of us experienced front tyre slip on the new bit of seal at road works at the bottom of Gebbies...:shit:
On arrival at Lil' River, I was surprised to see that the smaller bikes were already there with riders sheepishly looking quite pleased with themselves as they waited for the slow mob to show up. I'll bet they had a good giggle about it at the pub. :niceone:
Nice to see the girls out... Nights starting to get cooler & darker...

Yeah, that new patch of seal on Gebbies is pretty slippery, I had some wheel slip going up last night, and also going down on Sunday's ride.. definitely a good idea to take it a bit easy over that section until it's cleaned up a bit and the loose gravel on it is gone.

No offense intended but it'll take more than a bloody torch to solve GPs photographic woes. Most of the photos I've seen are like my vision after a wild night on the turps  :puke:
How about we do a whip around on WNR to help buy him a camera with reasonable resolution and a focus control? :D

Pretty sure by the looks of things that the pics in question are from the go pro running on automatic, though I do wonder what settings GP is using?
It could be that the pics posted are just cropped pieces out of the original leaving not many pixels to play with. The go pro HD's super wide angle shrinks things giving a lot of background as soon as they get a few meters away.
I suspect the Go Pro is best used for moving pictures (video). I still want one.

Yes TA you got it in one!!! I'm using 12xx*720. My gopro is the cheaper 960 verson of Pete's 1080. I think the video it produces considering the size of the camera is very good. I am a little disappointed with the audio. The advertising ramped up the audio aspect of the camera and while it is considerably better than my previous cam (it died) there is still considerable wind noise over 80k.
By the time I packed my good camera away you lot would be half way to Akaroa. I'm still experimenting with the gopro CJ so please be patient and bear with my bad photography!!!!!:facepalm::facepalm::fac epalm:

Hi all,
The Gopro is quite capable of showing some very nice resolution screen grabs. Gloplg's ones being blurry etc are nothing to do with the camera but to do with how he's grabbing them from the video and possibly compressing/resizing them.
A direct grab from the original video looks very clear, depending on what you're shooting, and will be 1280x720 (we both shoot at 720p) but you need a program that can extract a single frame, not all can.
There are longer ways around it sometimes but they usually drop the quality at each step.
These pics are some from the last Greta ride. I posted these a while back.
To get them looking good you've got to have the right software and even then it took me bloody ages to figure out how to do it! The original video looks a bit better than these as these are compressed.

Video editing software is usually a bloomin' nightmare to get around until you find one that you can sit down and digest for a few months
I didn't realise mine could until I stumbled across a how-to for something different and noticed them mentioning the frame export option. I was jubilant to say the least!
Have a nice ride on Sun. Where and when are you going? I'll be finishing up in town at about 1.30, home by about 2 (hopefully) so if you're going this way, someone come up my drive and give me a toot. If I'm home I'll come running out and join you ...

If anyone is at a loose end tomorrow night (Sat) and needs something to do, come along to the Isaac Theatre Royal and enjoy some great music!

And on the 5th of March there's the Waipara Wine and Food fest. Am there with two different groups ...
If you do come along, stick 'round afterwards and say g'day!

Haven't heard that name in quite a while. Think we might still have dozens of tapes (who remembers those?) bandying about with her name on. Waipara sounds more like a plan.

Well, we usually meet at BK at 1 to leave 1:30, so timing would probably work out.
The question now is whether there is in fact a ride tomorrow, and if so, where to?

Well, for some time I have been intending to turn right at Lil' River and then up onto the hill road (name?), around the tops and down to Wainui, maybe calling at French farm for a coffee. Flip & GP were talking about checking it out a few weeks ago but not sure if they did. The hilltop road is gravel so I'm only going if the weather is good. Anyone interested?

Something like this (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Moorhouse+Ave&daddr=-43.68517,172.6453+to:-43.79743,172.83899+to:Wainui+Main+Rd+to:Moorhouse+ Ave&hl=en&geocode=FdqhZ_0dbktKCg%3BFc5qZf0dtFtKCikrr1oPYiMyb TExOz5Mhu8AEw%3BFUq0Y_0dTlBNCinZKDdXCTQybTFgWI9Mhu 8AEw%3BFexjY_0dQkxOCg%3BFd6hZ_0dCUtKCg&mra=dvme&mrsp=2&sz=14&via=1,2&sll=-43.793774,172.847385&sspn=0.05322,0.132093&ie=UTF8&ll=-43.680288,172.863693&spn=0.426568,1.056747&z=11)?.. Bossu Rd (the one on the top) was in very tidy condition three weeks ago.
One small suggestion or note is that The Okuti Valley is gravel from the start of Reynolds Valley Rd all the way up to Bossu but Kinloch Rd is seal all the way up until it meets Bossu. The choice you make would depend upon wether you want the shingle climb or a sealed climb with a couple more kms on the top.

Hmmn, so then this route (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Moorhouse+Ave&daddr=-43.68517,172.6453+to:-43.81309,172.81174+to:Wainui+Main+Rd+to:Moorhouse+ Ave&hl=en&geocode=FdqhZ_0dbktKCg%3BFc5qZf0dtFtKCikrr1oPYiMyb TExOz5Mhu8AEw%3BFR53Y_0d3OVMCin9sBxcljYybTHgyD5Mhu 8AEw%3BFexjY_0dQkxOCg%3BFd6hZ_0dCUtKCg&mra=dvme&mrsp=2&sz=14&via=1,2&sll=-43.809261,172.819662&sspn=0.053206,0.132093&ie=UTF8&ll=-43.684757,172.801208&spn=0.426537,1.056747&z=11) would have a little less gravel, and is only 2km longer.

Your second option gives 3.3km gravel on the tops after a sealed climb vs the first option 6.6km gravel climb.
I'd consider the tops nicer than the climb. Of course the ADV guys usually go up the gravel climb.
Another choice further on would be more gravel tops by going straight past Jubilee Rd (gravel decent) and out to the Bossu Rd, Lands End intersection where Bossu turns seal and becomes a narrow twisty sealed decent (grit on some corners). That just takes you further out in to the Akaroa heads then drops you down to come back past the bottom of Jubilee Rd and in to Wainui as well.
Watch out for wandering stock... and oncoming traffic which can surprise you after not seeing any long enough to get that false sense of security thinking I'm all alone up here.

OK - thats the route sorted & weather looking OK.
Now, if we meet at BK at say 1:40 for a 2:00pm departure via Dyers & Gebbies, it will give Peetey a chance to come along as we should be going through Governors at about 2:15 ish...
Alternatively, wait at Governors Bay pub upper carpark from 2:10 for a 2:15 departure from there...

Hey, Ive been on my bike for a few weeks now, (Learners license). But so far its been commuting within Chch. I reckon It would be cool to get out on a ride before Uni starts.
Would It be alright for me to come along? I am getting a little more confidence, but I still consider myself to be very novice..

Absolutely.. I just started coming along on these rides about 3 weeks ago, having done very little open road riding, and everyone has been very welcoming and helpful.
I'm not sure if gloplg is coming along tomorrow, but he has been very helpful, by riding slowly enough that I can keep up and observe his lines through the corners, as well as giving me many tips - I'm still pretty slow, but his advice has helped a great deal.
It's a great deal of fun, and you'll probably learn a lot, so I'd definitely recommend coming along on a few rides.
