Wednesday Night Ride 2010\11
Every Wednesday night - Meet at Burger King car park on Moorhouse Ave at 6.00pm for a 6.30pm departure.
This is a social ride. The destination will generally be a pub or café for dinner, a drink and a chat.
This is not a race from point A to point B. If you want to "see how fast you can go" then please just fuck off.
Learners are most welcome on these runs, just let me or Flip know who you are so we can assign a helper to ride with you at your pace.
Ideally the route will be the same as last year, depending on the weather and road conditions and what buildings are still standing, the destination will change as required.
Duvauchelles-Akaroa.
Oxford.
Greta Valley.
Wets Route.
Diamond Harbor.
We do not like rules BUT:
1. Rider Responsibility
It is the responsibility of each and every rider to ride safely and within their abilities. If any rider acts in a dangerous manner then they will be asked to leave. Remember, you not only put yourself at danger but also the other riders and the general public. If you do not understand this then do not come.
2. Rider Assistance
At the car park we’ll ask that riders who would like some one on one help will be asked to put their hands up and we’ll ask some of the more experienced riders to provide that help. Please don’t be shy. This is an excellent opportunity to ride with and learn from people who have many decades of riding under their belts.
3. Leader
The cruisy group will have a lead rider appointed each week. Obviously it will be someone with reasonable skill so as to not piss everyone off. Please give the leader a little space. If they are not going fast enough for you, then overtake and leave the group. We will see you at the destination. The leader will stop at the pre-determined regroup points and wait for the entire group to arrive before departing.
4. Tail End Charlie
A TEC will also be determined as a safety measure. No body will ever be left behind on these runs.
5. Rossi clones
If you wish to do your own thing then feel free, but please leave the BK car park a bit earlier, before the rest of the group!! We'll see you at the pub (and we expect some beers waiting for us when we arive). There's nothing worse than someone trying to be Rossi and carving up the slower riders to get to the front. That's when accidents have happen. Leave first, ride hard and do not place the other's at risk. If we find you in a ditch we will provide first aid until the ambulance arives, but do not expect any sympathy on the web afterwards. If we find you talking to Mr Plod we will take and post photos.
Disclaimer: Neither myself, nor any other participant is responsible for another rider's actions. Each rider is responsible for their own riding.
Most of this was copied from Pheonixgtr, thanks.

Is that so? That's cool to hear. I think I need a getaway or get some fresh wind these days. Note that I'm kinda big fella (not THAT big but definitely not small).
Humbly asking, I'd like to participate for a ride.

Normal route to Akaroa (SH 75?)
Left through Gibbies Pass
Through Governors Bay to Lyttleton
Back through Tunnel, unless Evans Pass is open, then through Sumner

Tradition has generally been to Diamond Harbour for the first WNR of the season, but from what I'm told Godley House is no more. So uh.
Maybe via Evans and to the Wheatie?
But hell why am I posting I probably won't make it due to money.

Evans to Port is closed due to rockfalls.

Oh well it was worth a crack. If Evans is still closed you could go up Dyers after Gebbies and along Summit rd to Sumner and then to Ferrymead.

Dyers, along the Summit Rd to Evans works well with good light, but by the time we get there it will probably be going on dark. Later in the season that will be a good run ............ Will remember that one.

A short ride for the first week?
Cranford st Right into Innes Rd,
Left into Philpots to Queens park Drive,
East on Queens Park then left into Hills road,
Follow to the end off Hills road then right into Prestons road
Gather at the Marshand Primary School just before Marshlands Rd.
North down Marslands Rd to Lowerstyx Rd
Right into Lowerstyx Rd, and follow to Brooklands ,
Left into Kaianga road,
Pootle on through Stewarts Gully to The Old Main north road At Bridgehead,
Stop at the Macs pub for a chat etc.
A nice short road trip with plenty of twisties, plenty of interesting lines, bumps, blind corners, stops turns, good skill learning trip for all.
Sort of like the sumit road but with no hills.
The only failing point would be the road condition out at brookland from the uake, anyone have first hand information?
Really good for learners, not fast for the Rossies, and short enough to allow for the early sunset with only a short hop back to town afterwards.

I was on that road today, it is still a mess really. Quite a few cones marking spots where the road has moved up a little bit etc, rode over a bit of silt today too. Just not a smoothe ride at the moment.
definatley ride-able but not a fast road.

That must have been you i saw stooped on the side of the road today. I was in the car and the road was a bit bumpy. Mind you it helps when the driver of the car goes the right way around the cones.
Went out to Lincoln on the bike and noticed a few bumps that hadn't been there pre quake.

Well damn. I'd been hoping to see something of that vein.
I just moved to CHCH from Hamilton/Taumarunui a few months ago, and I'm bored out of my freakin' tree without motorcycle interaction... I think that'd probably explain why I dusted off this account... Hahah no point trying to be subtle!
- but, I've left all my gear + bike in the North Island, so whilst I'd love to tag along and meet some of the Christchurch bike crew, could anyone help me out on the gear issue/pillion seat option?

Anyway ...... The ride on Wednesday!!!!!!!!!!
BK, Halswell, Gebbies, round the bays to Port and either through the tube, or Evans Pass (depending on road conditions/light) to either Speights Ferrymead or The Twisted Hop.
I intend to look at the route before and will check out Old Taitap Road while I'm near.
I had a look at the Twisted Hop on Saturday. Parking is very limited, so our destination will be Speights Ferrymead, unless anyone has a better idea?????
So that's Speights Ferrymead via Gebbies.:done:

Not sure, Evans looked closed 15 min ago, and I for one don't like just re chip sealed roads, its a belt drive thing. Some of the details of the exact route is made up at the last moment. We were just going to head around the bays and get to the pub before the light goes.

I rode the old tai tapu road tonight, couple of loose shingle spots where they are repairing the road, and most of it is under a 30kph speed restriction, but otherwise no worse for wear than a lot of other roads around the town. The cracks in the road have mostly been filled and the others are not bad IMO. Just a matter of riding to the conditions looking at the road ahead and not being stupid.
My own experiance last week around the bays was uneventfull with only a few spots where the road was broken.
So with a forcast of light showers in the evening being the only possibile thing to ba aware of....
Let it be a good night for the first ride of the season

How many turned up?
What is the purpose of MAGNZ, I don't see what their aim is?
According to their website, "MAG-NZ was formed in late 2009 in direct response to the ACC levy hikes... core principals of equity and fairness for our members, and to our commitment to freedom of choice and self- determination" , basically to fight for the rights of motorcyclists - time will tell whether an organisation like this can get the support of the bikers it wants to represent.
Unfortunately, a lot of the time, apathy sets in (it's always easier to sit back and do nothing) and people generally get "stepped-on" by the powers that be that create laws that are supposed to support and protect us but end up restricting our freedom and choices. Hopefully they can drum up enough support to protect the rights of bikers - it will be interesting to see how they progress.
There were about 15 (?) bikers on the run today - I think a lot less than was expected.

Today me and Ted went for a ride over the Port Levey to Little River road on the old bike. Helped a really strange young-middle aged couple out who had boiled their car near the summit, and were blocking the road. Which resulted in me missing the MAG group as it passed through the Little river township.
Had a nice chat with a bunch of uber sports bike riders in Little River, spoke to one attractive young woman in white leathers on a white Duke about carrying dogs on bikes (who has 2 staffy dogs), who was very pleasant to chat with.
Made it back home just after 1400 to find Mr Plug waiting outside with his two paw power mates, for afternoon tea on the upper deck and a tour of my gun cabinet.

The ride today with the MAG group was reasonabile in my view. There were four WNR riders that I saw.
Here i will have to put in that the quality of organisation and riding on the WNR is good when compared to the other groups I have ridden with over the past few months.
At least everyone knows where they are going
And the leader knows how to get there.
And the pace is very even and safe.
IMO the WNR is doing a good service to those here in CHCH,the riders are better prepared well behaved and learners feel comfortable with us.
Its good too, that more experianced riders are not slow at giving out constructive critisizim where and when needed. Even some of the critisizim that comes from other members of the forum is take on board.
I believe that the WNR is a good place for good riders and learners
But remember this is my opinion and does not reflect everybodys elses opinion.

And the leader knows how to get there.
And the pace is very even and safe.
Hey, I know I'm not suited to leading - I had specifically refused to lead this ride when I was approached (I know I'm Captain Slow ), just turned out on the day there was no one else... My deep thanks to RQ for the lead thru town, would have been OK apart from getting caught out with the road closures (sorry, again short notice and don't continually cruise town checking possible routes on the off chance I'll get drafted!! )
And I guess from the pace comment is a compliment to the WNR; wasn't trying to be uneven or unsafe (unless sticking to the limit with learners is?)
Anyway... maybe next time there'll be more suitable riders available for leader, less last minute venue/route changes and others putting their hands up? Maybe even you? :innocent::innocent:

Wont be coming on any WNR for a while......im currently in Singapore.
Went to Macau last week, check out this line of parked scooters, they are EVERYWHERE!everyone there rides a scooter or small motorcycle.Makes me realise how small the NZ market is by comparison.
Anyway hope you all have a good time riding around the hills and stuff,im off to Moto GP in Malaysia next weekend, since i dont have a bike to ride here...YET :innocent:

Thank you SB.
It is always nice to have positive feedback.
I think we are lucky to be an established group with experienced members. All our leaders have done a good job, they deserve a big vote of thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:yes::clap::clap::2thumbsup:2thumbsup
I hope that our people are feeling comfortable enough to voice negative feedback as well.

Im sure that we are good enought as a pack to ride that route with a larger saftey blanket of skill. But if wet or windy then the tunnel would be best.

That road is too unforgiving to the unwary who are blinded by sunstrike.
At the time of day that we ride, that road is not safe to ride east to west because the sun is so low!!!! There are enough dangers on that road without riding blind.
A lot of the runoff areas involve several hundred feet of freefall with either an ambulance or a hearse at the bottom.
If you don't respect the Summit Road it WILL kill you!!!!!!!!!!

Very good points GP , sunstrike already claimed one WNR rider a couple of years ago. And besides that, riding out to Sumner is tedious at best. one of the best bits of the bays ride is the section between Lyttleton and Governors bay, would be a shame to miss that out. :shit:

I agree. We used the route you suggested as the first part of the last SatRide.
During the day with the sun high in the sky, starting the Summit Road from Evans Pass is not a problem. However late in the day the sun makes it too risky.
While I have something to do with organising our rides, I will not put our members at unnecessary risk!
I am interested in all routes that anyone has to suggest. Safety however is important to me, I do not like seeing our riders headed to hospital.
Thankyou for your input Subike, please continue to share with us!!!!

They have better things to do than bother us bunch of old farts, probably out looking for a bunch of boy racers to harass. The old farts on bikes are a hard bunch to bust as most of them are well heeled and are able to defend themselves.
