Sounds like you guys had fun!
I've spent the day in bed being force fed chicken and vege soup! The flu I've been fighting this last week seems to have arrived ...
Can't be there this Wed either or the Sun after! Buggery bollocks! I'll be there the week after I hope ...
Do you like the new Avatar? it is a pic of my day on his Panther (Where the hell is Roger these days) and my uncle on probably a James. It had to be taken in the early 50's because the Panther was sold while Dad was doing BMT.
That's cool Flip! My Dad has a Panther too but only rides it when he has to take it to get a new WOF!

Actually that reminds me, which way would you advise going down - we turned left and took Jubilee rd, but it's extremely steep at one or two points... would we have been better off going straight and continuing along Bossu?
Possibly better going straight through, Jubilee is indeed fairly steep in places and I have seen at least one person fall from failing to control her speed going down there in to a corner. She just hadn't got a feel for the brakes yet and wasn't applying them enough or properly.
I've had an amusing run up Jubilee two up on a CBR1000F once, my passenger was sitting straight up, even leaning back on the pack rack? and causing the front to lift over every little bump until I shouted to lean forward with me so I might be able to actually steer the thing.
To finish Bossu to where it turns seal at the Lands End intersection it would have been 7km of more gravel basically the same format as the rest of Bossu you had already done, so if you had no issue with the Bossu Rd itself then yes, you could have finished it off and then descended on seal but remembering that it's crap seal with grit on some corners year round. Still could be considered easier than the gradient of Jubilee I suspect.

Nice one DE. You did very well for your first out of town ride, especially since the last bit of the gravel road (Jubilee) is unsuitable for road bikes. Interesting to see how the strong wind managed to bend the power pole in your last shot... :shit::D

I've got a bike you could borrow, but I'm out in Sockburn.
If you don't get any other closer offers, I could always come pick you up in my car.

That's good to hear as it means you're also well. How'd you fare over the other side?
We had lots of broken windows so we're covered in tarpaulins at the moment but alive and well.
The power came back on today and the cat came back inside and is now either next to the heater or on her chair. That's the bit that makes me really happy as it's raining and cold outside.
This has been a great time to run out of credit on the mobile!

My three were fine thankfully as the Kat is the expensive one to repair but is not insured. But they were all upright patiently waiting for me when I looked in the garage!

We are in Oxford too and no damage to report other than a few broken ornaments...and a bit of superficial outside stuff...house moved alot more than in September even thuogh we are on a rock in the hills... I can only imagine how you in closer to the epicentre were feeling. My cousin was standing holding a concrete piller in the building opposite the Pine guild guiness building as he watched it collasp, he said he has never been so scared in his whole life ..luckily they got out and he bolted for home on foot as his car was in a hole. I know there are a lot of people without power who won't read this but we not so affected are doing as much as we can to help those who are. Peetey call your phone provider using their free calling line and tell them you want your mobile on one bill for now due to the quake, that way you can make calls or txt and sort it out later.

Hots's house is quite a mess......very uneven throughout ...maybe to the point of having to be pulled down at some stage??
Helpers have been there refitting the HWCylinder and cleaning up the silt & flooding which is all through the property and garage.
The bikes in garage all fell over and suffered some damage. mainly to the CBR 250 with plastics damage..the new Tuono has some light damage but is not too bad.

I was out in the car last night with the Dunedin lot dropping coffee, tea and food to the police and army guys at the cordons and can I just say they are awesome! Will type up a longer report later. Let's just say that I have never seen the city centre as quiet on a Friday night!
The roads that we saw like Fitzgerald Ave are completely buggered. There are huge cracks and holes all the way from Bealey Ave to Gloucester Street. Us lot managed to see more of the damage caused due to being allowed near the cordons.
I would say if you are out and about please take care on the roads and if you have a spare half hour go and give the cops a coffee, they really would appreciate it!!

I'll put my flame suite on before I say this.
I think you should give this WNR a miss the way things are this week at least.
We have been asked to keep off the roads to allow the service people to do their jobs.
And I do not think it is a good look to be seen blasting around the place with no need to go anywhere.
And the way things are you may have a problem finding a place open.
Just my thoughts.
You will do want.
Spuds1234

I disagree. I think it would be good to go for a cruize somewhere north of the town.
Im not saying we should ride through the twisties or anything like that, just maybe head to the pub and enjoy a quiet beer.

Both good points. Maybe just designate a pub/cafe somewhere north or south and those who can or want to just meet there for drinks/hugs/laughs/a good cry/all of the above, rather than an actual ride. Means those without bikes can join too ...
Maybe if people want to and we're out of town, go for a wee ride after ...
My vote is somewhere with a loo that flushes! Oh what luxury!:p
Maybe Kaiapoi or Rangiora? don't know how those places are ...

Kaiapoi is fine from what I've seen, a few things seemed to have moved here and there but nothing serious, they've now got people from christchurch heading out there to do their shopping.
Would be good to get a break from shovelling silt and head out for a ride on wednesday.

Folks I think I agree and see merrit in all the thoughts expressed for and against a ride on Wednesday.
My suggestion is if you want to go for a tootle/pootle/cruise and meet up somewhere in Kaiapoi/Rangiora/wherever, then go for it:drinknsin:2thumbsup:2thumbsup because the last six months have been rather stressful and a ride would bring some pleasure and normality back into our lives.

Right, so who is keen for a meet up in Rangiora tonight?
Does that suit everyone? It is a little farther out of town than Kaiapoi but I just chose it randomly and there are some nice roads to get there ...
How about the Monteiths in Victoria street
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=75+Victoria+Street++Rangiora+7400,+New+Zealand&aq=&sll=-43.304169,172.595059&sspn=0.001696,0.004128&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=75+Victoria+St,+Rangiora+7400,+Canterbury,+N ew+Zealand&ll=-43.304557,172.594662&spn=0.003377,0.008256&t=h&z=18
Again, random choice. Well, not really, it's the only place I know out there.
If there is a positive response from a few then we'll do it, if no one replies in the positive then we'll leave it for another day, no worries either way.

Yeah, I'm up for this... I think there have been plenty of good points on both points of view as to the appropriateness of riding under the current circumstances, but the upshot is that getting together for some socializing and group commiserating is the human coping mechanism for situations like this, and as long as we aren't out tearing it up or getting in the way, I think there's nothing disrespectful or inappropriate about getting together for a chat, and indeed the sense of camaraderie and fellowship that's (somewhat) inherent in the biker community is precisely the sort of attitude we need to have towards all our fellow man in times like these.
So, what's the plan?.. meet out there at 6, or aim to leave Christchurch about 6, or what?
Also, were you thinking we just meet out there for a bit of a chat, or go for a bit of a pootle once we're out there?
neels
2nd March 2011, 07:52
Rangiora sounds like a good plan.
Maybe could go for a short pootle from there the back way to Amberly, could always stop in at the leithfield on the way past, and the mak by the old waimak bridge is open and very bike friendly.

Great, great and great! Shall we meet there at 6? Sorry I pissed about today, I really wanted to head out and get some toads under my heels.
No worries Flip - didn't know you were into that kind of thing (frog squashing). :eek5:
OK folks - tonight we started a new game on WNR whereby a member of this forum suggests a previously unvisited destination and a time to meet...
Next, everyone rides out to the rendezvous at the arranged time, orders a pint and maybe something to eat and waits for the member to arrive and entertain us (Note: it is not compulsory for the member who invites everyone to be first to arrive)...
Since tonight was the first time this game has been played - we had a few teething problems. Namely, the member forgot the bloody rendezvous and/or the bleeding time. Being a kind bunch, we decided to let the member off the hook by offering them the opportunity to buy us all a drink some time...

Bollocks, I can't help it if you're all bloody late! You should all buy ME drinks for being the only punctual one! :bleh:
I was there just after 6, which was the arranged time, and waited on my own until 6.30 when I decided that maybe the wind had put you all off.
Was a shame to miss you all but I doubt you all sat there in silence staring at the wall because of my absence.
I went round the corner to my Dad's place and had a bloody nice curry!

OK, something doesn't gel but there must be a simple explanation provided no one is telling porkies...
I was a bit late due to being diverted via Kaikoura by the NZ Tellyban (Army). After getting to Rangiora and running into Neels & co trying to find the bloody pub, I got there at about 6:15. Now, thinking about it, as we arrived, Phoenix was just downing her second pint so she must have been there for about 5 minutes before us... :apint::lol:
This means both parties were there between 6:10 and 6:30. Hmmmm. We are talking about Monteiths Rangiora aren't we? The place was quite full but unless Peeteey was hiding or disguised as a Morris dancer, I doubt we could have missed each other...

Actually, it's also somewhat my fault - due to being held up by traffic I got there around 6:20, but I took a quick look around the parking lot and couldn't see any bikes anywhere, so I figured either I was too late, and you lot must had all arrived and gone off on a ride already, so I took a quick ride about some of the nearby streets, and swung back by about 10 minutes later just in case I was the first, and still seeing no bikes, decided I must have arrived too late and started to head home. I then saw a few other bikes headed in the other direction and headed back, where I found KiwiPhoenix and BikeeChick just arriving.
Anywho, I have no idea how you managed to hide your bike so well, but I must have come by for the first time while you were there.

I was thinking of a later meeting time say 7.15 to 7.30 to allow those of us that want to, to meet at BK at the usual time and tootle/pootle out via Halswell.
Some of us have to work:violin::violin:which may make 6.00 a little awkward.

Question is will we be able to meet at BK with all the cordons?
I would suggest meeting at the end of Moorhouse at the Hagley end next to that old white building (not sure of the name of it, I'm sure that someone will know), that way it's still quite central!?

Getting in and out of Moorhouse ave is a bit of a mission, I think BK might be better avoided for a while yet.
Just over the bridge from where KP suggested is a rather large car park, I imagine it's probably pretty empty once bunnings etc close. Of course there is a pub at the other side of said carpark, so it may be tempting not to bother with the ride at all.....

I reckon the central city should be avoided, it's a mess and there are still emergency services doing their thing.

Traffic around 4:30 to 6:30 is heavy just about everywhere at the moment given all of the lane restrictions, sink holes in the roads, silt piles and detours etc.
With all the stress and inconvenience that people are already enduring, I think that a group of bikes carving up congested traffic queues is a really bad idea anywhere at the moment (even though it's a sh*t load of fun in normal times).
I suggest that we ride individually to a prearranged rendezvous at some place where there are no queues after we depart en-masse. For example, Monteiths Rangiora at 6-15ish was fine for almost everyone last WNR :whistle::D
At the South east, Halswell Vet is a common rendezvous for organized rides...

Halswell is a fairly short ride from BK, so taking into account the heightened traffic and worse roads, a 6:30 rendezvous should be plenty of time, shouldn't it?
Also since we're not really riding anywhere, just down the road, we could leave at 6:45, and anyone that couldn't make it earlier or wants to take a different route could meet us at the pub at about 7.
Anyway, I'm definitely all for meeting somewhere a little further from the center of town - getting in to the BK the Wednesday before the earthquake was already ridiculous for some reason, with traffic backed up the entire length of Blenheim rd, and I had to split and filter like crazy the whole way just to arrive before you guys left, so with the earthquake induced traffic, it'd definitely be nice to avoid the heavier traffic zones.

On Friday night I got groceries from Countdown by BK (my usual supermarket) BK was/is? closed but the carpark is ok but their was only one entrance/exit as Madras St was closed.
Also Moorhouse Ave is down to traffic going both ways all on the BK side of the Island so it's a bit of a pinch point and right turners share the straight through lane as oncoming traffic is in the right turning lane we'd normally use.
Gasson St once you get on it is generally ok.
I hope not too many use BK as a start place, but then I'd be surprised if the turn out is anything like normal.

One of the nice things about Moorhouse Ave is the number of exits. If Gasson Street looks risky we have the option of going to Waltham Road to turn right.

Just got a msg from my Uncle in France:
A tough looking group of bikers were riding when they saw a girl about
to jump off a bridge so they stop.
The leader, a big burly man, gets off his bike and says, "What are you doing?"
"I'm going to commit a suicide," she says.
While he did not want to appear insensitive, he didn't want to miss an
opportunity he asked "Well, before you jump, why don't you give me a
Kiss?"
So, she does and it was a long, deep lingering kiss.
After she's finished, the biker says, "Wow! That was the best kiss I
have ever had. That's a real talent you are wasting. You could be
famous. Why are you committing suicide?"
"My parents don't like me dressing up as a girl......"

No according to Mr plod we were going too fast for the conditions. The fact that the road was as slippery as an ice rink has nothing to do with it. That the whole section of the road was replaced 2 weeks latter has nothing to do with it and that several other riders have fallen off in the same place has nothing to do with it.

Perfect! Even if you wanted to meet us at Miller's Flat, Peeteey about 645?

I'll be there with bells on. Not withstanding the rather strange mental image of a bell-laden Ducati. :)

Had to bail out tonight. Put my neck out yesterday and I don't think I can do a bike trip, even a short one tonight.:violin:

Hey kids, was sent a link to a most excellent quake video with a parody of one of my all time favourite songs.

Made me laugh quite a bit :)
Fun ride tonight, thanks kids! Was also nice to see the increasingly elusive Mr and Mrs Cruza.
And Rik too, it's amazing how quickly someone can disappear into the distance ;)
Oh, Sam! I hope we didn't lose you along the way back! We all left together but when we arrived at the pub we noticed someone was missing, hope you're all good!

Did most of the day 2 up. Crowe and I are stuffed. Colin my friend on the R1100RS had fun and learnt heaps as well.
Its always surprising how much grip you have on the race track in the wet.
It was great and the weather was perfect. It was great to practice in the wet a bit and in the dry.
They just uploaded the photos from the day, there are one or two good ones, like Flip leaning like crazy on his big heavy beast:

And being two up doesn't stop him:

One of the instructors warned me to dial back my lean angle a bit as I was in serious danger of grounding with the center stand, but from this shot it looks like my foot might be the first thing to touch ground (also, slightly worryingly, this shot is from after he warned me, I'd hate to see how close I was before):

Sorry I did not hang around for a drink and natter.
Did not want to be a snob.
I wanted to be home about eight and though you guys were only going to the Tai Tapu pub.
So though I could just squeeze a quick wee ride in, before catching up for a drink with you guys at the Pub and still be home by eight.
I did not realise what the time was until we all had left Little River.
I guess I better turn up next week for a catch up.
And will try not to be as tired as I was last night.

Hi all,
As some of you may have heard, literally, my beemer needs new mufflers. (am going deaf as a result!)
Does anyone know where I can get replacement mufflers? They seem to be very model specific.
I've emailed a bunch of places 'round the country with no luck so far. Beamer89 put me onto a dude in Auckland with some on TM but I don't think they're quite right.
Cheers for any help!
Pete
p.s. should add, it's an '85 R80RT monolever, for those poor souls that haven't been blessed by it's presence yet :D
*edit* Found some for a very good price at R Twin Works up in ... whatever area 06 is. North of the channel is a mystery to me :)

I got the ones for my xj from cycleworks in wellington, they make them up to order, from memory around $500 delivered for the pair.

Centre stands can be buggers of things. I'd be inclined to remove it.

Yeah, it was bloody handy when my chain came off, and also comes in handy when adjusting the chain tension, lubing the chain, or checking the tyre pressures, just for the ability to freely rotate both wheels.
But yeah, judging by that picture, if I ever managed to ground the center stand, I probably would have hit with my foot first anyway.

I'm not too keen on an actual ride now that it'd be entirely in the dark, but just because we can't go on a long ride doesn't mean we can't get together at the pub for a bit of a chinwag, so I'm up for meeting at Halswell and just riding to the pub, or meeting directly at the pub.

No, but on the way home I found I didn't have any petrol either! Coming up the town side of Gebbies Pass I heard that wonderful splutter and had a hell of a time keeping the engine going whilst trying to find the bloody Reserve tap ...
Limped home slowly, feeling a pang of concern every time I came to a hill I had to climb.
Made it tho!

On a side note, Has anyone been down Curletts road recently?

There's no Uni on Sundays so there's always the 'Canterbury Sunday Winter Ride (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/136506-Canterbury-Sunday-Winter-Ride)' thread option and yes to Curletts Rd is you consider last weekend to be recent.

Na its more the assignments.. guess I should be more organised..
Curletts road now has 3 lanes http://www.voxy.co.nz/national/changes-curletts-rd-traffic-flows/5/87742 the problem is that it is signposted pretty poorly, take care care going down there as a lot of drivers arent sure if they should be merging or not.
