You have the Mangamukas to Kohukohu to practise your riding on, that is like motorcycle heaven!

I am thinking a Sunday afternoon thing, bit of a pootle in the morning, finishing up at ours for a BBQ lunch and a couple of cold ones. Even if it is a kid weekend or what have you kids could also come along, it would just mean parent misses the ride. Suits me I am not riding anyway :innocent:

Everyone gets so busy at this time of the year, Sunday arvo should be easy to sort.

Let me confer with head office and set a date :niceone:

Hi Ducati man

u went just a "wee" bit faster out the front than Grant did. pushed me a bit. i liked!! but did gulp on a couple of crners.

was just behind scott before u took off.

Ooops, sorry.

It wasn't till we stopped and Grant pointed out that a couple of the bikes were pretty much tapped out at 100 - 110 that it dawned on me how effortless the big bike is. I think that the guys (and girls) on the smaller displacement bikes 150 - 250cc did bloody great to maintain 80 - 100 kph speeds, with the bigger engine comes a fatter rear tyre, so I can fully understand the gulps. Phreak said the same thing about corner entry speeds when we got to the cape, he was watching his speedo coming up to the corners whereas I was looking ahead for possible crap on the roads so wasn't really thinking about the speed side of things, TBH, Grant did a fantastic job up front, and as I did the TEC coming back from the cape I had a bit better idea of what you guys are having to do to maintain the open road speeds.
Sometimes being pushed a bit can be fun, other times not so much, I am glad it wasn't the latter.

i don't think I ever went that fast that long......and while the bigger bikes might have more uuumpf it is fun to have a skinny little one to throw (?) around. Easy n nimble.

later in trip (3rd day) i rode a lot better. unlike all yr experienced riders - i cant cruise thru corners. i changed my approach and went down a couple of gears and felt much more comfortable in corners and felt more in control. actually redlined it at one stage (but wasnt speeding) one day i will master the art of not having to slow down coming up to corners but that is years away. until the i will slow down some time before the corners (without braking :-)

Lol just don't get to doing what I do and hit the redline every time you shift! Hehe...

It all comes with experience, and I think you'll surprise yourself how fast you'll learn! But I thought it was really cool to see you approaching corners with more confidence on the final day, you looked right at home on the bike. :niceone:

Maakz was following me all of day 1 and 2 and I could see her move to the right side (instead of maintaing the same postion) of the lane coming into a left hander. You can maintian your speed when you can see alot more of the road through a corner.
She would then drop back into the staggered formation.
Being to the left of our lane she was already set up for any right hand corner..
If its a left/right/left situation...entering that first corner in the correct postion puts in the right place for the next without having to button off.

Part of entering corners is being in the right gear and at the right speed. There is a riding style (can't remember what it's called) which incorporates using only engine braking before corners, the idea is to be very smooth (and perhaps less noticeable to cops).

You'll improve more quickly than you think.

riding only with the engine break was actually quite relaxing, there was no choice but to make sure you where at the right speed. At times riding along the windy bits felt like flying. Good fun.

I found I need to look a lot further through corners. Got that from Mark W but my helmet sits a bit low on my face to make it comfortable so the helmet was blocking my view. Was intresting how much it helped my corner speed.

Through the twin bridges my bike was sliding at the rear through corners when I unleashed the bikes amazing 31bhp.

It was probably all the weight I had on the back of the bike though.

Yeah. It's quite a fun exercise to do it sometimes while going through a gorge or something. ... Although it's not as relaxing when the engine is screaming while you whack it down gears to slow down quickly.

Either that or 40km around the harbour.

Of course, in my job, telecommuting is definitely an option.

Heh i get to walk to and from work every day as its only about 15 mins to get there, rain or shine and I just work doubly hard to get out on the bike hence the 20,000k although I think i will have to get back out and do a few 2k weekends to be on par with gremlin.

As usual a very entertaining read young Gremlin, you forgot to mention the effect of your lights in the dark, I truely have never seen anything so BRIGHT. Actually wondered what the hell was coming down the road.

You did very well in TEC, I specially enjoyed the weaving approaching Hohoura on the way south  I am certain if it had been dark I would have seen sparks

As far as forgetting your toothbrush on the way home, I reckon that was deliberate given the obvious fun you were having when you overtook us after you had turned back south again

Walking down the hill to the lighthouse was all good, the up hill was a bit of a mission. I admit I had to dig a bit there towards the end :pinch: Still I was not going to miss out for anything.

Am really looking forward to this weekend. We just got our Chrsitmas tree. It smells divine  First year in a long time with a real one, am surprising myself with my attitude to Christmas this year. Really looking forward to it. No stress, pressies bought, fun and good times ahead.

sadly didnt make it up to maha and mom's SAT but did today. very relaxing!

key events -

* pork crackling which involved a bucket of salt but didnt taste like a bucket of salt. i got a wee bit, Sabine got the rest ha ha ha. it was great crackling but not four hours later on my way out to dinner when i could still taste it, but then i did eat more crackling than i've ever eaten in one sitting.
* The Princess bed. Sabine needed a siesta, no surprise after all that pig! four of us joined her though Vaughan chickened out after realising it involved jumping into bed with the chef.
* The chef snores.
* The chef's bike is still falling apart.
* Mark and Anne are great hosts.
* Sabine was desperate for a root.

I'm no Rossi but, now that I'm really getting to know the Katana after having it for six moths I'm very plesaed with how I can throw it around. Even fully loaded with camping gear I don't really notice any difference in the handling. As for power I certainly have no problem slotting in between cars at open-road speeds from a standing start (as you may have observed tonight). Mostly I ride between 4 and 6 thou rpm (top gear at 100k is about 4,500) but when you want to get moving a quick twist really delivers.

The attachment below is from a site that I find reasonably good for bike comparisons (once you get past all the flashy ads). The red line is for the GSR750 and the blue line is the GSX750F (known as the Katana in the U.S.)

It seems to boil down to the fact that the Katana is a sports-tourer and more of an all-rounder whereas the GSR is a sports-naked and more of a "track-style" or street-fighter.

On paper the GSR is 30kg heavier with a top speed 10mph lower and a smaller tank (17.5L compared to 20 on the Katana).

This, of course is comparing 750s. I've heard opinions that the Katana 600 is a bit low on power which is one reason I went for the 750 (apart from it being in the right place at the right time).
