One thing I would like to know is...
Who will be tenting?
Talking to the new managers last weekend... they said they will do us a sharp price for the rooms, tenting is minimal, and an extra $10 per head the Hangi etc.
We will have a better idea of whats what in a couple of weeks once we get up there and have a look....

This will be their first "group booking" where they are. We were planning to ride up there first 3 day weekend after they take over to do a reccy, we will have to drive up now :pinch:

Whichever/whatever, if you dont mind bunking in with others it will be cheap enough, of that I am certain.

I will have a car available (albeit in Whangarei as I am riding as well) which has a tow bar and can haul a trailer with bike on it etc as well for back up.

I am also happy to host anybody for any extra nights in Whangarei, if they want to come up earlier or stay later than the 3 days. Only have a sofa bed available, but should also have a spare bed by then

Tell me about it! Still, this cast is of the fibreglass variety so it is light, and it is the correct length so nothing moves inside it, thank God, for that really friggen hurts :pinch: I was shocked yesterday to see how wasted my calf muscle had got in a week with no movement, the quads are faring a bit better as I am excercising them best I can, but I will have some serious work to do to regain my strength once this thing comes off.

Now all I really want is a decent nights sleep, will be the best healing thing for me, am sick and tired of being woken up everytime I move. I have also been suffering muscle spasms, Mark describes them as arm tourettes  Onwards and upwards:yes:

Fair call, it used to take me over an hour to get too Maitai Bay from here but not at 80kmh. Any hoo if you allow for the time de-touring off SH10 you would still be better off stopping elsewhere IMHO.

Going over the Mangamukas does not add too much to the travel time either, maybe 40 mins or so.

If you do decide to stop here let me know & I can talk to Blair who runs The Beach house for you, give him the heads up.

I'm in Kerikeri and would like to come along for the ride up to the cape on Saturday. won't be staying - just up to play and back home that night.

Reggie
Sure, keeping in mind this is a learner ride and will be treated as such every Km of the way.
If there are those that want to go on ahead at any point then thats ok.
As long as I know what is going I wont have a problem.

is it open to full license holders - considering the crap weather lately I haven't really had time to get much road time anyway, and my "off road" experience would still put me in the learner league surely :innocent:

A few full license holders in the pack will help no end...
As it stands we have probably 3-4 (on thier full) attending.
If the group gets too big I have two options..
Split into two groups or limit the amount that attends.
There are a few ''maybes'' at this stage but I will keep an eye on the numbers.

Nice to have you all coming up to the part of NZ that I now inhabit.

Yeah, the light tends to come on around the 120km mark, if taking it easy I'll get 150ish - probably 180 including reserve.

Meant to be a 18L tank, it takes about 10-12L when the light comes on. I always fuel up cause I'm not pushing it and I sure as shit ain't leaving it on the side of the road in Northland while I go get fuel......lol

That dosn't sound right. Have you ever run it out of gas completly(carry a 4l can of gas) then fill it to the top. On the shadow I can get about 5l in if I let the tank settle once it's full.(breather hole too small) Has the bike been droped and the tank is dented and just boged up.

Fuel

Reliable gas at Awanui (220km to Cape and back to Awanui);

Reliable gas at Houhora (160km to Cape and back to Houhora)

Probably gas at Waitiki Landing (40 km to Cape and back to Waitiki).

I can add a 10 litre can to my load which will get the Ducati back on the road although I would really expect that 160km from an 18 litre tank should be easy! Even my Subaru Forestor with a Turbo does better mileage than that!

As for a trip on the beach - high tide is at about 4pm that day so it would need to be a trip up the beach on the way to the Cape as it is best to be off the beach at least two hours before the tide is full. Points to be aware of with this option are:

Gas at Awanui, then back to Houhora is 190km.
The beach route is subject to the previous weeks weather - heavy surf can leave holes and soft spots.
Getting onto the beach involves crossing a short (20 - 30 metres) section of drier softer sand.
The beach is a public road and still has speed limits.
The hard pack sand is hard pack because it has SALT water in it and salt water can make a mess of flash alloys if left to sit there for too long.
The exit up Te Paki stream involves riding up the stream bed and crossing this a number of times - if rains have been heavy in the previous week the stream can develop large and deep holes. These are not always easily spotted in advance.

Having said all of the above I have ridden up the beach and up (and down) the stream a number of times on a variety of motorcycles over a number of years. If conditions are likely to be poor I take the road, if they are going to be good then I have no problem riding the beach.

Riders Choice!

There are a few stunning rides up here - happy to discuss these with anyone on the Friday night.

Thank you Mark for that info...
The beach part is not a happening thing as far as I am concerned.
For those that really want to, we can talk that over on the Friday night.
The ride brief in the first post will be adhered to.
The ride to the cape and back to base camp will take about 6 hours (trust me on this) taking in a stop or two (Houhora pub being one)
We will be taking in Twin Bridges road on the way back on the Sunday.
That will give those that have not been on that road, a real sense of what Motorcycling is all about.:scooter:

And there is no one to take the BHS up here at the moment, the replacement is still getting qualified to take the practical parts of the licencing process. Which begs the question, If your not a motorcycle rider how can you be qualified to judge riding competency??:gob:

If you think that's expensive... wait until you see hard luggage. My pannier racks are standard equipment... panniers alone are $2500 for the pair. Please do make sure none of the straps can fall out, get stuck in wheels etc, as it turns ugly real fast.

You just have to strap them on well, weight them evenly, and as above, watch for rubbing straps destroying your paintwork.

Remember guys, especially if it's your first long distance trip. Using a backpack will tire you out faster than not using one, due to all that weight on your back, and if it slips mid-corner it can also be dangerous. Hip/chest straps are useful there. The shoulder straps can also restrict blood flow to the arms, if it's too tight (especially when you have all the thick bike gear on).

Good advice here alright. I am not a big fan of back packs on bikes and not just for the reasons you call here. I knew a guy that broke his neck coming off his bike with a back pack full of builders tools on his back :pinch:

I used to ride with a back pack. I left the shoulder straps loose enough so the pack slumped onto the pillion seat & used the waist belt to keep it secure. It was not full of bricks though, a really heavy one might flop about a bit. Never had any issues & it was comfortable.

Aren't we Learners supposed to go 70km, tut tut! You will find very quickly that 70 is a bit slow. We sit on 80 to keep safe.

Dont worry to much about the BHS. They seem to help you get through it. Are you going to somebody local? I would really recommend come to Auckland to do it with the guys I went to. They were very helpfull even though I was an ok rider before. I learnt heaps. And they have an easy to ride bike to use. No Roadworks main highway that I have seen, Haven't been a long riponui road in ages and ages, however its always normallly got loose stones/cowshit over it, will go check it out in the next week or so. Twin Bridges was however good the last time I came through it about a month ago.

I have a Magnetic Tank bag (its only 18litres and doesn't extend) that someone is welcome to use, and I have also got some oxford first timer pannier bags someone may like to try out for size I won't need them for this trip at all.

Removing the 70km/h speed limit restriction for learner motorcycle licence holders.

Good to hear you're on the mend, hopefully your bike is all ok now to? Sounds like a lot more drama breaking your wrist than your foot, I was only in a cast for 10 days, then into the moonboot, but that only stayed on for a week or so. Then it was just hobbling around for awhile!

I have another 3 and a bit weeks in a cast then a further x-ray to see if it is mended. All things being equal, I will get the cast off then and start rebuilding strength. I have 5 weeks from cast off to the ride so I should be ok.

I'll put my hand up. We'll bring a tent.

Good news for the learners..
But its still a learner ride and we will be riding at the speed of the slowest rider.:scooter:
I will (however) encourage those that drop behind a bit (for whatever reason) to use the open road speed where possible to catch up. There are about 16 passing lanes between here and Whangarei, a distance of 99 kms. So on average about every 6 kms theres a passing lane..

Sounds good, it must be nice for the learners to know they can legally travel at 100km/h now! And should help us make decent progress too! As I need 100km/h wind to take the weight off my wrists.....:yes:
