dear Maha,

i am writing to you re the Cranberrie Chocolate, which apparently is your favorite. Unfortunately it was somehow overlooked that the stock of cranberries was depleted and we are now having to make do.

i will however make up for the shortcoming upon my return to Auckland ( i shall be on travels over ze weekend) and make a rather large slab for you which you then don't have to share.

again dear Maha,

i am very sorry that you will have to eat other chocolate tomorrow. But let me assure you that i will make ze other chocolate before i pack my thingies for my weekend travel tonight, and the quality will be of the finest as always.

kind regards
Blue Rider

Time to pack me thinks. I'm going for the "it will be warm enough I won't need a jumper." option.

And if my bum gets cold I will turn the daytona on and sit on the pillion seat for five minutes. That thing gets so hot I thought my ass was on fire last night. That thing's not made for pillioning I can tell you that much.

Hi all. This ride must be coming up pretty soon no? Guess I better hurry up and buy a bike and some gear! Should probably get my learners permit sorted too. Anyways, if someone could let me know the actual date that'd be great. I've read the whole thread and it doesn't seem to be listed anywhere and hasn't been mentioned in any post.
Thanks.

We're up to page 88 and most of the posts have still been lewd, crude, and not for the fragile of mind...!

Hahahaha wouldn't expect you too, Chef!

Well, today is the day! The skies down here in Hamilton are a little overcast, the ground is a little damp, but I think it looks like it's gonna clear... Please Please PLEASE everyone be safe out there, the roads haven't seen much rain for a little while, the hot sun tends to bake all the tar up to the surface of the seal, and now that it's a little wet it can be really slippery in places. Remember, there's no rush today, it's about the journey more than the destination! Can't wait to see every one of you, perve at your bikes, tell stories and get plonked tonight! (AND you all better be nice to my GF, Nicole, she's gone all nervous now!!!)

See you all in a little over 2 hours!

Adding my huge thanks to Maha and Mom for an awesome weekend. Thanks to Scott for a fine job at the front of Group 1. Thanks to all the girls who bought sugary alco-pop that I stole so I didn't have to drink my shit beer. Sort of thanks to those JD club people that provided a drink that stripped the enamel off my teeth but also cleaned my chain. And thanks to she who shall remain nameless for "accidently" locking the keys in the boot of the support vehicle so we could have a nap after lunch.

Awesome to meet Tony at last too. Turns out all the lovely things everyone says about the man are true - love it when that happens.

Can't find the thread for the next ride yet? Chop chop Maha, time's a wastin'.....

What a fabulous weekend! Home safe and dry ( cars dont require wet weather gear). The rain was crappy most of the way home from Mercer so others that had gear failure got wet and a bit chilly. Still a hot cup of coffee and a change of clothes soon sorted that. All the norf contingent are on their way home. Millie has a sister for company tonight. The girls are in the pool room swapping notes

Thanks to everyone for making the weekend so cool. Am tired so will leave the lies and bullshit for another time :sunny:

Sleep well guys

Another best time had...wet bits here and there when we got home thanks to Rainy Auckland (it was like that we left yesterday )
Every other part of the ride was sunny and dry...:niceone:

That $10 per head for food worked well...18 large pizzas delivered in 40 mins...all got eaten and enough bacon/eggs/hash browns/sausages bread/butter was bought with the rest to feed 25 people this morning (must remeber tongs next time)
Great to see Tony...John and Janet...jokes and laughs over a couple of beers.

We have a tent here..its in an orange bag/and a green towel...doesn't smell like anyone I know...:shifty:
Pics to load
The next Ride is in the mnaking...wont wait so long this time...maybe 6-7 weeks

Thanks to eveyone who came on the ride (settle Matt ) you are the ones that make the time away a pleasure.

Like everyone else has said, huge thanks to Maha and Mom for organising this, letting me and Dad/Big Daddy/Rob stay on friday night, etc etc etc. You guys rock! Am not quite 'home', made it to mum & dad's at one tree point for the night which is good enough for me... stopping was good, it's been a mammoth day/weekend and I'm shattered!

So many firsts for me this weekend:
-first long ride
-first group ride
-first time riding in the rain (and my gear is waterproof I discovered, whoop!)
-first time on all those beautiful middle of nowhere roads!
-first time eating Sabine's chocolate and Mom's bacon. Yum!
Probably more but my brain is just not working properly lol

Was awesome to meet you all, such a fun weekend, just wish I was going to be around for the other trips that are in the pipeline. I was only half joking though when I said that I'd plan my trips back around the L's angels rides... I am going to lurk and live vicariously through you in the meantime hahahaha

Thanks to Maha and Mom! Getting the new toy out for a play was a blast. Thanks Grant for leading the gang to Taupo and letting me ride your pride and joy!

Just a couple of observations I made during the trip.

Be more careful overtaking other vehicles!! Grant and I were a little shocked while following one of the groups back to Auckland - the whole group overtook on a blind crest!!!. There were other moments I spotted people overtaking in silly spots to make sure they were not left behind. Always plan your overtaking manoeuvres, don't rely on others to asses it for you.

The larger group format doesn't work well. I think it's better to keep groups of no more than 6 - 8. However if it is a large group riding together, would be best if less experienced riders were closer to the front of the group with experienced riders at the back.

I am not trying to single anyone out here, everyone should ride at there own pace and not feel pressured to ride past their limits. :niceone:

I really enjoyed it! Thanks again for organising it, looking forward to the next one.

*mentor hat on* as I am surprised to hear this of a trip that was designed for learners...and I know that Maha's rides of this nature are well run.

Yep. Learner riders should not be expected to keep up. The lead rider needs to set the pace based on the likely speed of the slowest rider. It is easiest to do that if the inexperienced are near the front where the leader can follow them in his/her mirrors. If the front of the group 'jumps' then the tail-enders should not feel forced to do so too, but rather wait for a better opportunity. After all, are they going to lose the leading group, who will either slow down a little to allow the catch-up, or will wait at a turnoff?

Pack riding is what you have described, and is best done on one's own. <_<

I personally made a wrong call in letting someone lead a group that had never done that before...my fail on that.
And thats no judgement on the lead rider..theres more to leading a group ride than leading a group ride.
I will also limit the next ride to 21 so that each group will have 7 riders.
Each group will have a mix of rider ability/pace to consider.

I learned stuff on this ride for sure.

I had forgotten all about that till you reminded me. I take it Tim you saw me facepalm my helmet and shake my head and then slow right down so not to be caught up in anything should it have occured...

Said 'problem' occured that a slow truck was going up a hill, which was fine as there was room for 1-3 bikes maybe to get past safely at the given passing point, but the whole group apart from the TEC went past this truck coming up to the crest of the hill which would of just been carnage if oncoming traffic had decided to make itself known at any point during the manoeuvre. The fact that leader past was fine but people have to stop acting like sheep, we had some similar instances on the cape trip, people need to think for themselves is it a safe time to pass or do i need to wait for another gap to become available.

But great time (along with some grumpy moments) hopefully had by all and a nice little blast at the end to clear the cobwebs our towards the end of the trip which really made it all worthwhile...

Awesome to catch up and lovely to meet the new missus Scott, looks like she will well and truely keep you out of trouble!:msn-wink:

With the large group, yes, after we set off I thought I should have checked what speed you wanted me to do. Cars and SUVs caused a bit of a mess splitting the group apart, but I halted a few times to get the group uh... re-grouped. I had 2 behind who had no problem, but then kept losing the rest, even though I ended up doing 60-70 at times

Truck was a necessary evil, as I didn't want to split the group in case someone couldn't/wouldn't overtake (and I wouldn't know), besides, they were doing 93kph pretty much on the dot, which allowed the group to re-group and cars to get out of the middle of the pack.

Anyway... re quantity of groups, I don't see a problem in having more, I know I organised some day rides with 6 groups, 24 learners divided amongst them, but the trick is to keep each group small. Sometimes I could see a long queue behind, if the terrain allowed, but couldn't tell who it was, and whether they were the middle or the end, or the lights were the cars... sure were plenty of Porsche's etc out there.

Absolutely agree re comments overtaking (or pulling out into intersections - and anything really). Each person must individually decide if it is safe for them to proceed. That's why there are points to re-group, TEC etc.

Maha... I don't think the person to person corner marking worked well. I've seldom seen it work over the years (not you, this is over all the group rides I've been on), and you only need one person to muck it up for a number of riders to get lost (especially if amongst the remaining people only the rear people know the route). Having a group of pointers seems to work better... but you just need the extras to be able to do it.

At a little bit of an awkward point in my life, I felt the need to be with friends, and I do feel that I have just inherited a whole bunch of simply awesome friends - beyond that even, there is a sense of family bonding the whole group, including others talked about lovingly even though they were not there.

So the home leg didn't follow the pattern? Often happens - I have lost count of the rides I've been on that started well, and ended 'fragmented', shall we say. Part of the human condition as it relates to bikers, I suppose.

By pack riding, I mean like the gangs tend to do. The structure is that all do what the others do at the same time (you'd think they were all roped together). It leaves no room for error and can be deadly...

I disagree to some of that, anybody in there doing a Lead or Tec role is only there to create a safe riding environment - people on the rides have to take some responsibility for there riding as well learner or experienced...

Passing something is not an issue if the leader believes the group is capable of it and in this case majority of the roads we were on at the time were straight enough to accomplish it (extremely safely), the group passing as a bunch of grapes on the blind crest is not the leaders fault the fault lies with those riders in my eyes, yes the leader may need to slow down and wait for people to get there own suitable passing area for a complete re-group, as straight after this blind crest tec and my group got past with no trouble.

Maybe I am misguided here but thats my thoughts.

I personally made a wrong call in letting someone lead a group that had never done that before...my fail on that.

I think that's a bit unfair on the leader of that group. What happened with passing the truck wasn't his fault and over the course of the weekend I don't recall him doing anything that struck me as dangerous. Learner or not, someone in charge of a vehicle is an adult and should be able to make their own decisions. I was concerned a couple of times during the ride on both days that there was a serious amount of sheep activity going on, where the job of choosing the corner speed/entry point/line etc etc was not being made individually, but rather by the person ahead. By person ahead I don't mean the leader, I mean the person immediatly ahead - who could also be a learner.

Given that was happening, I believe Scott did a stellar job of keeping the speed etc safe and the only thing that needs changing is reminding people that they MUST be making their own choices at all times. Yeah, they're there to learn, but that doesn't mean copying exactly what the person in front of you is doing. I wouldn't want to lead if I thought that anything I did would result in someone else crashing because they were copying me rather than thinking for themselves.

The corner decision thing is a bit subjective since my mind reading skills aren't what they used to be when I was a Jedi. However, you don't get a better example than watching a line of bikes pass a truck over a blind crest when only the first two could do it safely. Well, that and I did shake my head a couple of times when someone near the front would start doing tyre warm-ups because they were bored and the action spread back through the pack like they were chained together.

We are all responsible for our own actions out there. While the more experienced have the added responsibility of being watched and copied and listened to (whether they want or even deserve to be) at the end of the day if you pass a truck or ride through gravel on a corner and end up a mushy paste, you can only blame the person who made the desicion to do it.

It was great catching up with friends, old and new, on Saturday night.
Thanks for your hospitality people.

Hugs lovely! Was so yummy to see you, its been far too, far too...

Said 'problem' occured that a slow truck was going up a hill, which was fine as there was room for 1-3 bikes maybe to get past safely at the given passing point, but the whole group apart from the TEC went past this truck...

And there was a ride rule broken right there.

Never mind, this was a good learning curve for all of us, lessons have been learned, good times have been had, and we all got home safely. The last one to arrive would be DICK, I reckon she should be just about there now

At a little bit of an awkward point in my life, I felt the need to be with friends, and I do feel that I have just inherited a whole bunch of simply awesome friends - beyond that even, there is a sense of family bonding the whole group, including others talked about lovingly even though they were not there.

I like my new family :-) I simply can't wait for the next ride - Is it time yet?

Cheers
Virgil (the no-longer virgin)

You know you have done it now though eh? No friggen hope for you at all
Was lovely to meet you, next time you bring cookies make sure I actually take one would you mind, I simply wandered off and forgot. Sorry about that I was focussed on breakfast

I will lead the next ride (thats me and my group of pace setters)
I personally made a wrong call in letting someone lead a group that had never done that before...my fail on that.

I respectfully wish to disagree. I strongly believe my group was very well lead. But this I will PM you about later.

Having recently been a poorly lead ride that was plain dangerous I feel I know a bit about it.

Scott did a very good job apart from one small error in GPS reading. I doubt I could have done as well. That is the last I will say publicly on it.

The corner marking situation does need work if big groups are used. When I marked the turn off 27 I stopped well short of the turning bay to give riders room to turn. But no body stopped after. I had to wait for the TEC (maha) to come through before I could carry on.

And maybe in future we use per printed maps. GPS may seem like a good idea but maybe not.

I think that's a bit unfair on the leader of that group. What happened with passing the truck wasn't his fault and over the course of the weekend I don't recall him doing anything that struck me as dangerous. Learner or not, someone in charge of a vehicle is an adult and should be able to make their own decisions. Good post, yea I agree everybody should "ride their own ride" per say and choose their own entry points and braking points as I only brake for tight corners so I wouldn't want people copying me, needless to say though, I think Armi did a great job on his 150, I saw him in my mirrors the whole time, apart for when he stopped whilst going up a hill.

Was it me they were copying when I was playing around with weighting the pegs and standing up? That would be a sight to see when everyone started to copy that...

I think with staying on the same line as the person in front, should only be done if the said person has good lines and are not riding like a lunatic, my lines were pretty good throughout that trip and Armi was trying to follow them so he can get the idea of seeing through the corner and when it is best to turn in etc... will wait till he posts to see what he thought about following lines.

Will post more later as I am at work and really should start cleaning something haha.

Following someones lines is not something I would advocate to anybody unless you plan on running off the road with them if they get it wrong. You should always be aware of the person in front of you that is a given! But you should be scanning the road the same as they are looking for your own line, checking the road condition for the line you are planning on taking, your entry point, apex, and exit points to a corner.

Following someones line is a great form of Target Fixation and not something you want to get into the habit of doing.

Yea but to get an idea of good lines I would say it helps, depending on who I am riding with I will follow their lines but usually take my own, especially on the ATNR where the pace is pretty quick and I know how my bike corners and what the limits are but if I am trying to learn from somebody (Mind you I usually do it on the racetrack) and they are at a comfortable pace I will tail them till I feel uncomfortable.

But definitely don't focus on the person, you should be looking at vanishing points, road conditions, camber, corner speed, distance between riders etc... maybe another way of putting it across is doing small lessons that people can work on, so for example, a page on the correct line for a corner and showing and describing when you should turn in etc... so that people can practise that with their own knowledge. I will make more intelligable posts when I am at home, finished now so that will be shortly.

Um... Yeah...

Maybe putting someone without a great deal of experience out in front isn't such a great idea, but I was never uncomfortable with it, nor was I overly taxed by worrying about those behind me. I was checking my mirrors plenty, keeping sight of my TEC most of the time (although I think 7 bikes is about the limit for doing this), and when the group got a little too far seperated due to a hill or tighter corners that some riders might not have been comfortable with, I held out my arm in a 'slowing down' motion, then decelerated, to allow the group to reform nicely. I made sure to keep my speeds completely acceptable at all times. I appreciate the fact that it was a learner ride, so not everyone is going to be at the same skill level, but when I asked each member of my group how they felt about my leading, everyone was happy and had no problems. The only time I think I might have been in error was passing a truck on a fairly long straight section, admittedly it was up a bit of a hill, but he was doing 80 and slowing, so I thought it would be okay to get everyone past. In future if I'm allowed to take the lead again I will remember this, and accommodate to suit.

Yes, I missed the turn before the dam, I was following the GPS and it showed the route I had spent 2 hours setting up, not once was it mentioned to me that the cafe we were intending on stopping at was off this route. All I was told, in which I should have asked for clarification, was that we were going to be stopping at the cafe, not the dam. I should have asked whereabouts said cafe exactly was, instead of assuming it was further down the road past the dam. When I realised my error, we were already a fair distance down the road, and probably should have turned back, but instead made a group decision (with group 2 as well) to carry on. However, I gladly take the blame for this, and it will serve as a good lesson for me. Had this error not been made, the rest of the day would have gone a lot smoother, as I think the next stage (and the plan of 'marking' corners) would have been explained at the cafe where we were supposed to be stopping. But, hindsight is a fickle thing. 'Nuff said.

The ride down on Saturday was one of the best rides I have ever personally had, the countryside was spectacular, and I fully intend on doing the trip again (probably on my own though next time) to take it all in again. I sincerely hope everyone had as good a time as I did, and I'd be more than happy to lead any more group rides in the future. They say the best way to learn is by doing, don't they?

Oh, and on a side note, I've just been speaking to Nicole, who says she had a great time too, she asked me to say thank you to everyone for making her feel welcome, and she hopes to see you all again very soon! We're already planning on doing a trip up north (in the car) to visit a few of you, pending finances and time off from work of course. I'm gonna be busy as all hell now that the V8's are almost upon us again, as I'm supervising the track build and event management... But it's gonna be awesome! If anyone is coming down to the race, I'd love to catch up with you!!!

So yeah, all in all, the weekend away for me was really fun, I'd like to say a great big huge special THANK YOU to Maha and Mom for putting it all together in style again, so good to catch up with a whole bunch of awesome people, great to see Tony (you're still the single greatest inspiration in my whole life!), John and Janet (miss seeing you guys more often for sure! Definitely gonna come down and visit soon!), as well as Gremlin at the Oki-koki pub (you do seem to get around a lot, message me when you're in the Waikato again!), and look forward to seeing you all again real soon!

Take care, ride safe! :Punk:

I think that saying it was a wrong call to let him lead inferred that he shouldn't have been leading. At least that's how I read it. Saying that it's no judgement on him isn't the same as saying he did a good job, just that you don't judge him for doing a bad one.

Not having a go or anything silly, just leaping to Scott's defence in case anyone else (particularly him) assumed you weren't happy with his leading.

Now I read it again I see how I misunderstood what you were saying. But it has prompted a good discussion and a bit of food for thought for next time so all good eh?

You need to be very careful at how you explain your self to people as 'Follow my lines' doesn't tell someone how to go around the corner or give them the tools, they still need to be taking into account that they still need to ride there own ride and know the fundamentals of going around a corner and this is where Maha makes it very clear on saying that these rides are to provide a safe riding environment only, not mentoring people...

My biggest cock up in riding was being self taught and thinking the fact that I hadn't had an accident made me a good rider, I had people show me lines but I still wasn't negotiating a corner properly for anything they said to matter and realistically if your taking into account the entry point, apex and exit of your corner you can negotiate a corner from anywhere in your lane and/or change your line mid corner.

But how do you know if the person in front of you has good lines or not? At a track you can be pretty sure because they've got 'Intructor' on their nametag and know the track inside out, and if they are demonstrating they adjust to your pace, not expect you to ride theirs.

Unless you know the person well, and their experience, and what other people you trust say about their riding, you can't be sure. If they don't know the road they have to be pretty bloody good to get it right every single time without fail. I'm also sure there are some incredibly talented riders out there that couldn't teach someone to do what they do if their life depended on it.

The problem is that it's pretty difficult to know what you don't know. Passing on advice and helping people out is great if you've got the experience to do it. Telling someone to 'do what I do' is a huge call and certainly not something I would be comfortable doing. I could quite happily go the rest of my life without being woken at 2am by thoughts of the guy that died following me because I fucked up and he followed me into a wall.

Before anyone gets their knickers in a knot, this isn't aimed at anyone. I had a great time at the weekend and all concerned did a terrific job. But if being a bit of a grumpy bastard for a para or two helps someone not crash, then it's worth the pixels.

Yea sorry was scattered at work, for me it was a mixture of both so having seen the theory and then going out on a ride and actually putting it into practice, so as Maha says it is not a mentored ride, how about getting a "mentor approved" sheet of paper dictating on the safest way to take a corner and have them practice it on their ride perhaps?

I would only suggest it in cases of extremely bad riding mind you, because I have heard about people running way wide and taking corners in rather interesting ways but then again that is just me.

I do think that everyone there is an adult and should be able to make their own decisions, especially for corners and passing opportunities.

I think that having to be bloody good to ride unknown roads at a good pace with good lines is a little wrong, if you are taking the right lines and taking in all of the information in that you can, you can read every corner and adjust yourself to the speed of each, though it does get into quite an advanced technique, once you have the basics down you improve with leaps and bounds.

And you can see if somebody is riding a good line by the way they take the corner, are they completely relaxed and looking through the bend, taking (generally) one solid line through a corner and not braking half way through or being all over the place, there is a lot that gives it away.

Hmm, wanking... :msn-wink:

If you're looking at the bike in front of you to follow their lines, you're not looking far enough forward to process unknowns up ahead. The rider up front will be able to adjust their line, and you'll end up riding right over the pot hole, or the possum or whatever else happens to be on the road. No point looking at bike in front as your brain can't process and make adjustments in time.

Na you would use your peripheral vision, or should be anyway. That's what I would do with Scott since I was right behind him and if I was looking at him directly I would have come off a few times <_<

 Yeh, but the other way round. Your peripheral vision should be on the rider in front and your focus should be on doing your own line, which is much further forward. So I think we're saying the same thing judging by your second sentence..:Punk:

One thing I really did like about being out in front was that I had to choose my own lines - which are far from perfect, I know, but they seem to work okay for me most of the time!

I can definitely see how easy it would be to fall into the trap of following a leader's bad lines though, or anyone elses for that matter, which is why everyone should 'ride their own ride' as they say. Of course, if you do happen to have a really talented rider in front of you (as I did when Maha led me home from Taupo last time we were there) I learnt a great deal from imitating his lines, all the while trying to see why he took them, learning about late apexing and so forth. So I think there are pro's and con's of both sides of the coin, but reality is that most riders aren't hugely talented and will make mistakes every now and then with their lines (unless they know every corner of every road in the whole country!)

Me, I just like being out on the road. Whether it's in a group format or not, riding is riding. We learn from our mistakes, and we learn from other peoples mistakes, but mostly we learn from other people praising us! Cause no-one likes being told they're shit at something. Everyone loves being told they're awesome. Same principles apply here I think.

sounds like it was another Awesome weekend - even if the last three or four pages of discussion should have been shifted to a different "Leading group rides" kinda thread.

Have a question. My better half is gaining confidence on her GN250. But its a pig dog of a bike on the open road. Doesn't like to corner at speed (it IS a GN after all), doesn't like to sit on 110kmh for too long, and is comfy at only 90 really.

So the question is this. After reading pages about cornering lines and so forth....just how fast were you guys going?

Only the speed limit, but if there was a bike that wasn't able to go 100 I am sure the leaders would have slowed to 90 to accommodate.

I kept my top speed at 100, if a corner was signposted I slowed down appropriately. Not hugely slowing down, admittedly, but keeping the average pace more than comfortable. Although, in saying that, there was a section of unpainted road that I took a lot slower, because it was a lot less comfortable to navigate without a centre line (without taking focus off what was in the distance to look down at how far over the lane you might be...)

I have been called upon!

While I was behind the Chef, which was most of the time, I didn't really follow his line at all. He goes too wide for my liking. I keep a watch on him out the corner of my eye and ride the line that I feel comfortable with but I was trying to stay a bit wider for longer than I'm used to for a later apex like the Chef was doing.

At one point I taught myself why a middle of the corner apex is bad. Coming around a right hand corner my wheels were nearing the centre line when I noticed a truck coming the other way, taking up all the space possible on it's side of the road. I straightened up and continued cornering further towards the outside of my side of the road. Lesson learnt.
