I remember you were talking on other threads about chain pull geometry. Looking at that you've either got a deeper than std sump so have had to raise the motor - in which case I can see why you've done it - or you've simply built the longest short bike known to man...
Wasn't it done to outrigger the drive due to his new wheels and disc setup?

I see it's not o ring. The primary on my Norton appears similar quality & it seizes with only about 50hp going through it. Might be worth going to flash as chain, you will get three or four of those out of a standard bike chain. We've run this chain before, and it only gave issue when the axle slipped and the chain got jammed between the shock mount and sprocket. But we've got the big O ring critter we were using before, might get a master link for that and run it on the primary.
Don't be using no cheap industrial shit. That chain doesn't look particularly heavy duty...I'm with Bob...that setup is short lived. Good luck with that. It's well heavy duty, but I'll discuss with Al whether we should shell out for a bike one.
Poor cunt posts up his great work & every cunt pulls it to bits. We're only trying to make sure you don't fuck out bro. It's all goodly bro. No one is picking holes in the idea, I can handle helpful input.
+1....i also hope the layshaft bearing is the biggest fuck-off double row ball you could fit in. Is there enough room to enclose it and run it in oil ? It's gonna need a guard anyway.Running a couple 6008s in there, sealed. Light press fit, and we've got spares.
I remember you were talking on other threads about chain pull geometry. Looking at that you've either got a deeper than std sump so have had to raise the motor - in which case I can see why you've done it - or you've simply built the longest short bike known to man...You're onto it mate, the front sprocket was about two inches higher and four inches forward of the swingarm mount. There was no possible way to stop the torque from compressing the rear end. So the center is now 10-15mm lower than swingarm pivot point relative to a straight line from the axle center when full extended.
Wasn't it done to outrigger the drive due to his new wheels and disc setup?Nope, our front sprocket has been engineered and offset 14mm for the chain to clear the wheel before we got it. So I simply flipped it and Al made the lay shaft with two sprockets at 28mm centers. The new sprocket position at the wheel will be the same as it was, the disk will be mounted on the same side but outside the swingarm on a splined carrier.

It's gotta be done. Our chair is pretty good for what it is, but it can be better.

Before I built the belt drive set-up for the Matchless it used to eat a primary chain every meeting and they weren't cheap old Renolds chains either. Tsubaki or RK and we replaced them over the weekend of the Classic Festival two day meetings and they were longer than Drews set-up, although his probably won't get as hot as ours did.

Right. Updates.
The Gixxer shock has been sprung for the job it has at the back, and the front shocks have had a service. Sits really nice bow and 5he damping adjustment has obvious actual effect.
Gotta extend the swingarm next, and I'm thinking about flagging chain adjusters. At the minute the bike is so fucken torquey that we haven't needed to change gearing. If we ever do though, so long as we do it in 2 tooth increments and change the chain we should be all good.
Please discuss if anyone still reads this.

Why? Is it more difficult to organise than usual?
Only, if you're changing swingarm length there's presumably handling benefits involved. Why not leave yourself the provision to change swingarm length to a lesser degree in order to fine tune that?

Extend the swingarm with a non adjustable axle, make the chain adjustment on the swing arm pivot. It could be as simple as a slot and block type arrangement (which is what I'm planning on using) like the chain adjustment on a road bike. Or you could get Alan to use his engineering skills and make up an eccentric adjuster.

Our swingarm is currently too short. Turning right is next to impossible with the throttle open at all as it just unloads the front hoop and drives straight ahead. This can't be completely fixed, what witha big chunk of the bikes weight hanging out the left. But it can be improved.
The sacrifice is of course reduced direction changing speed. But it's still a short chair so better at that than a gay long chair.
Adjustment is hard to build in since with the new axle/wheel, one half of the swingarm needs to come off completely.
Grumph
28th June 2015, 12:28
Well if it's too hard to change the arm. I'd go for a slotted pivot mount on the frame and inserts to suit.
The Rickman round insert is nice but for sheer bloody minded cheap arse practicality, the Colin Lyster square inserts take some beating. There's a locating strip welded to the frame front and rear of the slot, an off center hole in the insert - and you can turn each insert two ways...
i can't post pics here but if you want to see how Colin did it, PM me - I've got a Lyster frame here.

OK. But like the man says you could make the swingarm pivot adjustable, no?
In fact a cleaver bastard might make it adjustable vertically as well, there's advantages in messing with arm pivot height to change weight bias under acceleration, and if you'd like the front planted a bit better on the gas and maybe just a little drift in the back it might be worth some design hassle.

Putting adjustment in the swingarm pivot, is only beneficial if the other two wheels are adjustable to balance everything. All we wanna do is get a number board lower than 6 after the nats. Then start again on something better.

I'm not reinventing anything. I just figure that adjusters are not required if we have a few different chains to match sprocket sizes.

Hmmm, that is not my experience of new chains. New 520 chain on the RF when I got it, never needed adjustment between tyre changes.
What condition were the sprockets in on the chair in question?
Anyhoo. Seems I'm the only one who thinks they're surplus to requirement. Looks like we'll fashion some adjustment in there.

Well I did think his problem in the first place was how long and difficult it was to change to wets...With no brake to worry about it would be easier....
But no, i actually meant the idler sprocket system ATK used - which i'm told by the owner of one, actually does work...

We've looked at an idler before. But it was going to really fuck the suspension up, so we went with the primary chain to a midd point shaft.
The reality of the current situation is pretty simple. Motivation is at an all time low. We haven't ridden the bike in nearly a year, and when we did we got average results. So we're getting it going with the most basic system to make, that still gives the handling advantages we are after.

Wheel change will now take a couple of minutes, and can be done with the bike just off the ground. 10-15 minutes before, and the bike had to be a minimum of 500mm up.

This bad boy is strong as all fuck. It is a fairly high stress application after all. But if it can sheer 3 out of 4 high tensile M8 cap screws, the wheel wouldn't withstand the impact anyway.
Al should have the axle clamps made this arvo, and the swingarm cut to accept them. If so and he doesn't get it put together while I'm away this weekend, I should be able to get it back on three wheels Monday night.

Ten inch rim with a ten inch hoop bro.
I pulled the wheel and axle out today, chucked a sprocket on and put it all back together in ten minutes today. That was with the shock not connected, so I had to lift wheel and the axle to get it in. If I can't do it in five minutes start to finish, I'll be very surprised.

Is that caliper just sitting there or is there a mount done ?
If the mount is still to be done, a good trick to hold the caliper in place while you fabricate the mounts is simply to put compressed air into the caliper.
I've remounted so many bloody calipers now I've made three different thread adaptors for my air line. Very useful too.

Not sure what you mean about boxing in. After I weld up the joints, there's no more bracing or strength require.

Ours is not an ideal one to scale down mate, but I'll measure it up for ya next session.
Made progress today, but not as much as I wanted. When ya have to fabricate components, it soaks up time something fierce.
The wee tunnel through the chassis is made of a pipe split down the centre, and two bits of plate welded between the halves. Then welded into the hole.
So the master cylinders are in final position, and the just need the mounts welded all the way.

I'm doing second incarnation, with full RS fairings & bike clinic on the fork legs & sidecovers as it was before it was parked up for years.
But hang on, it's a FZR front wheel in your pic. As you were.

The problem is that between us we weigh as much as Tina, Tracey & Tracey. Apparently that's a disadvantage, but two Tracey's should get the vacuuming done pretty bloody quickly though.
Here's a pic of what I've been working on this arvo, the ex Bill Biber K100rs racer.
Prefer not to start a thread about it.
That is the same Yellow that I like for wheels. I reckon they look cool, and kinda make the bike look fast just sitting there

Is the wheel not symmetrical?
Last time I saw that bike I think was early nineties on display in a bike shop in Masterton

Looks like an FZR wheel in the rear too. How the f do you make it fit a brick ?
And to follow Kicks' question, are both wheels offset to the left of center ?

Sorry about the hijack drew. I don't know about how you fit a FZR wheel into a brick, it has a rare as rocking horse shit magnesium built for the job PVM in the rear now.
Unsure about the offset, I'm just restoring it, Michael Dobson who built it will be seconded in by BRM to tell the story at the end.
Wheels are the Continental tyres logo colour as the bike was conti sponsored at one point.
The bike was supplied to me with a 20 year old can of Dulux 2k in the correct colour.
My painter used it to match it with the latest hi tech paint system.

All good Steve, hijack away.
It's a shame we have to put all the wiring back on the chair. It looks so good and tidy without it. Way back when I shortened the loom, I remember thinking that I should have made a jig to shape it and get the branches coming out in the exact spot. Fucken glad I didn't, would be impossible to shift stuff round now.

I need to dig through my fittings and find something the right length to seal in the tapered thread in the drive wheel calliper though. The mating surface doesn't seal well enough.

Is it a JFZ caliper? I'd be inclined to drill & tap it to take a 8mm banjo bolt, although that would mean it would need a machined surface for the washer to seal on.

before you pick up an 8mm tap check the threads on the fitting, they have finer threads than normal so it'll probably mean getting a set of taps including bottoming tap of the correct thread size
Drew
19th October 2015, 18:22
That's why I used the other calliper chaps. It's already tapped on both sides, so we're all sorted. No need for machined surface as I've got a tapered thread elbow fitting jammed in one side and a plug on the other.
So as long as the chain doesn't foul on the plugged side, Robert's ya mother's brother.

It'll pass it's WOF. The new brakes are easily within the regs for emergency operation, and they don't even need to be given that we've got a completely separate hand operated calliper on the front.
The swingarm and shock are stronger than they've ever been.

No photos at the minute, been a bit slack. The chair is finished mechanically, and the body work has begun. Al reshaped the drive wheel cover to hid the disk and stuff, so that and the repairs from Burt plowing into us at Hampton needed smoothed and finished nicely.
I started to lay some big on last night, when a mate came over to say hello. The look on his face when he saw it spoke volumes. He immediately took over and began undoing many years of bog on bog with a grinder and flapper disk. He's really good at that shit where we are clearly not. As he shaped the new rear fairing, he made me take the chair cover outside and cut off the 15mm thick (not an exaggeration) bog on that. Jimmy MacGlaughlan is his name, support that mo'fucker if yer ever watching the NZ V8 racing.
