It's common knowledge that I'm an egomaniac. Also, that I'm mental and get depressed. So to be faced with something that no matter how hard I try I simply cannot do, is fucken mind bending.

My whole life, I have been able to become passable at whatever I set my mind to. Not this time. No matter what I do I make it worse.

If our painter won't do it for us, I have no idea what I'm gonna do. That thought leaves me in a very dark place indeed.

Was meant to have the paint on today, but the panel shop was having it's floor painted instead.

It's not gonna turn out as well as I'd like, but unless I pay someone to prep them we're gonna have to just accept that it is an old fairing that's been patched a million times.

If you follow this line of logic, and sidecar racers being what and how they are, it would be easy to gauge the size of a certain part of the swinger's anatomy as they would size the handholds according to what they're used to holding....

What was the issue? I recall it being a hot topic of debate. It was virtually a mass debate.Just gets too hot. The industrial chain we dummied on there and hadn't changed lasted three laps. We chucked a decent chain on it but it still got real warm, so to stay safe we'll go back to the original system and try to position an idler to keep the length right when the suspension compresses.

Anyway.

There was a lot of positives from the day. The chair handles much better with the longer swinging arm and new shock. Takes a lot more effort to get the chair wheel off the ground now, hopefully that means there's more speed in the lefts as well as the new grip on rights.

The brakes work better now, we just need to adjust lever ratio to get a bit more braking power.

Manfeild.
Just gets too hot. The industrial chain we dummied on there and hadn't changed lasted three laps. We chucked a decent chain on it but it still got real warm, so to stay safe we'll go back to the original system and try to position an idler to keep the length right when the suspension compresses.

Told ya to have a look at the ATK system of idlers - it works on long travel dirt suspension so it should have an easier time on your short travel setup.

Edit - why bother with a tensioner ? Warwick's posted pics of 600's with enormous chain runs where the arm is only about half the span of the chain...i'm assuming the suspension only has minimal movement, say 1 - 1 1/2 inches. might not be a problem at all.

We've got no tensioner at the moment, and it would be fine. But without the primary chain the front sprocket is too high compared to the swingarm pivot. Like, two inches too high. It's one of the many draw backs of a huge touring bike lump.

That's kinda not the best solution.

We thought about an oil bath for the primary chain, but there's that pesky issue of 100% containment.

After Wanganui, we're gonna move the swingarm pivot or find a Gixxer thou to drop in it I reckon.

The question is, are we happy to suppose that our grandchildren may never be able to see a shortbike, except in a picture book?

The only way to save a shorty is to save the environment in which it lives, because there's a mutual dependency between it and multitudes of other species of both racers and spectators alike for which entertainment prevails.

If you give me some dimensions off a fixed plane, I can draw it up for you and measure the chain runs to see exactly what it will do. and if it would pose a significant problem.

the first pic is the first draft I drew for mine, which is ideal with the swingarm pivot in line with the axle and sprocket centres. so at rest the chain is in the tightest position, and only gets smaller as it travels through the arc. But I didn't like how the swingarm point was below the parallel of the axle and ground. so I redrew it and I think I can live with it getting 3mm tighter as it travels through the arc, the top run never gets short enough to worry about it throwing the chain. This is based on the 40mm of shock travel at the axle centre, which it will never achieve as the shock is to be mounted rearward of that point. I've got the opposite problem to you, my sprocket centre sits quite low in the motor (which is probably why moly builds then on 10's not 13's).

Don't think so. 1200 and 1400 are a different family of motors though they look like the 900/1000/1100 externally.
I had a 1400 apart not long back and was surprised how different it was.
Plenty of dry sump setups around for the 1200/1400 though. The Radical sports cars use them, the 1400 was dry sumped.
Only prob for a chair is that you've got to use a separate water pump. Dry sump pumps go where the water pump usually sits.

This is the car setup, replaces pressure pump too unlike i think how you've run the ZX10.

Pretty standard for something like that

First one I raced with a GSX1100 engine in was 320kg and it had been to Jenny Craig twice

Some dumb cunt also took the starter off to save weight, so by the time it was fired up and going I was already too fucked to race

Exactly the same as the bus. It was weighed at Eastern creek to be 282 with about 5 litres of juice in it, so close to 300 with full tank.

My old Porteous chair (ex Pate) used to only be 245 dry. No alternator, no starter..... titanium this, titanium that... kevlar fairings...

Drew
26th November 2015, 08:06
Our fairings are insanely heavy, but the issue we can't fix is the weight bias when we are on it. Were we to put a Gixxer motor in, I think the further rearward distribution would make it unrideable.

Tough decision as to whether adding more weight would benefit our lap times. It did at the Barry Sheen last year slightly, when we put the fairing back on after running without it.

Food for thought.

I think you'll find it had more to do with less drag than weight on the front.
I did the same with the bus years ago, ran without a fairing, then put it back on. Was faster with it on.
It never made an iota of difference to the handling, but the ergonomics were greatly improved.

A way to test it is at the drags.

That reminds me, fit the Koso dash so we gets a rev counter.

He will have to make a new front end, alter his steering head rake, alter his trail, change his shocks, more the engine forward by 20mm, put a smaller diameter tyre on the front, and larger on the rear, increase the size of his steering dampener, lower his handlebars, ballast the main fairing, move his instrument cluster forward, move his fuel tank further forward, move his battery forward, move his kneelers further forward, move his seat forward - then have to modify his brake and gear levers, move his radiator forward, move his oil cooler forward, move his sidewheel forward, then alter his sidewheel castor and wheel width, then move the passenger deck forward, and finally.... lengthen his chain.......:shit:

:lol::lol:

Did I miss anything???

He might be out for a season, but he'll get it right.....:devil2::lol:

Yep, where is he going to place his MILO holder now?

DREW- Gets a bit tricky on account of the chair wheel. But it did occur to me. # Make it happen dude!

Make it happen dude!

Since the bulk of my bulk is behind the chair middle, I'd end up at the same height as a solo rider to get the required effect. We have jacked it up at the back with the new swinging arm.

Another full rebuild of the whole chair is futile. It's pretty good as an entry level chair, so we'll do a season and move it along and get something better.

When that thing is on song, you'll not wanna get rid of it.
You'll be surprised with how competitive it is, but how sore it is to race at 100% - but your body will remind ya of that anyways......

What about less pre load on front shocks with stronger springs instead

There are a hundred things we could do, and would given the right motivation. But we just had an argument today about how far we should go with the improvements.

So we're gonna get it reliable, race it, and see if we can find something better.

I think you'll find it had more to do with less drag than weight on the front.
I did the same with the bus years ago, ran without a fairing, then put it back on. Was faster with it on.
It never made an iota of difference to the handling, but the ergonomics were greatly improved.

A way to test it is at the drags.

Okay so can anyone explain how Kevin Wendt's sidecar went so well with out a fairing? was it his riding style or would it have gone better with one on it?

Just run it around in circles & have some fun. A week after a race nobody cares who won, who lost or who busted their head trying.
Faster & further up the feild doesn't equal more fun. Love it for what it is, I can't imagine you having a better time just because you are a few places further up the grid, which frankly, you will be the only person that gives a fuck about.
I've seen many people blow the budget on going a tiny bit faster & then not be able to afford to go to all the meetings they want to.
Keep it real bro, you're famous for that.

A methanol burning 1100ish hotrod engine.... says it all in the straight line stakes....
Handling? Centre hub steering... as opposed to leading link front ends of most of the other competitors back then.
No fairing. Alot back then didnt.
It was blindingly fast in its time. But things change.
When I got my Porteous chair, I took 9 seconds off the lap record at Baypark at the nationals.
Nowadays the gruntier and lighter longbikes are faster yet again.
