That was an ok ride, nothing really challenging, the second lap there were a few areas which had a got a lot more slippery and cut up, couple of stupid little offs when I tucked the front end but an ok day

Caught up to one of those quad bike abominations who was a little bit harder to get in front of than I thought, finally passed him in the boggy bit near the end (not that we were racing)
It was a loooong day following that bloody pit bike. Took all day to do one lap. After getting thrashed up all the hills, the daughter finally managed to cook the motor (she wouldn't listen) and it finally expired near that bog you speak of. I went for help, son stayed with it (near the road as it turned out) and some kind sole arrived with a rope and towed him back. Now to strip it down to decide if it's worth fixing. On the plus side parts are cheap, Chinese parts. The weather was perfect.
The ride was ok, the day was shit because of that pit bike.

Even with having a bit of experience i wouldn't even consider riding a pit bike on those rides

Actually the funniest part of my day was after the death of the pit bike, my son decided, we need to get it back to the car. So he tipped it up and lifted it up onto his shoulder upside down and started walking, "it looked bloody hilarious". The daughter was told by him to ride the Beta back to the car and be nice to it, Which she was.
After I told him how far it was back to the car, he put it down and started pushing it, he figured, might as well get closer while waiting.

At 47kg she never had any suspension issues.
Shes not keen to do a trail ride again. But if I fix it, shes keen on more rides at weedons

I think I saw him. Duty above and beyond. That terrain would not be nice walking. I think he helped me when I fell off at that gnarly wee stream crossing close to the swamp.

Shitty little wheels don't handle the bumps that well

When we went back to get him I saw the arrows went to the right, and missed it altogether. but I did it again because it was a challenge. Did it once on the WR and twice on the Beta

Dead easy ride..........

But, lap two hated me,
10 mins into lap two, no idea how, tucked the front end, over the handlebars I went....

25mins in on lap two, flat rear, split in the tyre.

I now have,
Bent handlebars,
A f#@ked rear tyre,
oh and six stitches and lots of other small cuts, good times lol

so after 10 mins pumping I desided it needed to come off
by this time it was like 7pm... what did I find...

"My rides" does say the next ride on 21st is Omihi. However the flyers in the shops are saying the next ride on 21st is the Glenmark ride. Linton was saying Grenville posts them to him, so there's a good chance they are correct.
You'll have to drive past Glenmark to reach Omihi, just follow the red arrows to where they lead you. It's a surprise.

Glenmark was good. Omihi is really good. It seems Omihi might be 11th june if the posters are correct. It's possible it'll work out for you.

Glenmark and Omihi are basically the same area anyway, the ride this weekend you turn off at the Omihi school, straight across the road is where the Glenmark rugby club rooms burnt down which were in the Omihi hall

Me and a friend (my only mate with a bike) were planing on going to the Glenmark trail ride this weekend but unfortunately his bike died last weekend. So now I'm unsure about going on my own as never done one before. Can anyone tell me what to expect? Is it a good day for a solo rider or should I just wait till his bike is fixed ? Is it worth the $60 ?

Me personally, I won't ride by myself just on the off chance something turns to custard I want someone that's able to get the Westpac chopper in to cart me out

Generally well worth the $60, it cost me nearly double that to do road race events for probably a 1/4 the time on the bike

Last ride out by myself I tore a Hamstring and damaged a shoulder. Was well looked after by other riders, but would have preferred a mate or two. Good thing the wife was waiting back at the car to help load the trailer and peel the boots off!

flashg
19th May 2017, 23:17
Heres my thoughts.
Last year was a drought as is often the case for us Cantabrians. The Glenmark ride was great until our last lap. We had just started it and the rain started, it got heavier and heavier, making the surface like a skating rink. The ground was still rock hard underneath, the tyres couldn't dig and give decent traction. The wet surface was sticky mud, blocking up the tyres and creating a few arse clenching moments on some downhill sections.
In my humble opinion I can say we have had a much wetter season so far. I believe the soil will be softer deeper down than last year, so hopefully not so treacherous.
The other thing is many of these rides are run in reverse every second year, so hopefully the tricky downhills will be interesting climbs.
Just my thoughts
I'll be there with daughter and 2nd son

Adventure Trailrides Events

The Glenmark Trailride Sunday 21 May is cancelled due very wet ground conditions from the rain over the past two nights. Got stuck in this boggy crossing on Tuesday marking out.

Rotator cuff surgery 6th june, be off work and riding for four months. I'm only upset about not riding for so long. My new knee is only 18 months old. Didn't want another operation so soon.

Without being a bit wet and greasy it wouldn't be as much fun and only 18km a lap, if it was totally dry I think you'd have to go hard out to enjoy it, some fun hill climbs but nothing very hard, dunno about the enduro sections I only did one of them which wasn't any harder than the main trail

Yep, I watched it now. Looks like hard work in places,(especially with worn tyres) even worse for younger inexperienced riders. Though if dry it'd be perfect for them. Lifes been easy with all the droughts these last few years and getting 50+ hours out of a rear tyre. By the time I'm back into it, it should be dryer. New tyre maybe next autumn. Running the"tubliss" system makes a huge difference. Running usually 4 psi in rear.

The only place it was hard work was where he had the first lay down and going by the numbers there when I came through I'd say 3/4 plus were having a lay down there (I might have had a couple)

Not sure why they'd let them but there were kids on peewees on the course, I think it would be a shit day for them and the people looking after them

I see on the Myrides website there is an organised Trailride in the Mendip Hills planned for Aug 6th

Having newly rediscovered the joy of riding in the dirt, I'm thinking this might be a nice thing to do.
I'm not looking for anything terribly challenging just a fun day out.

Minimum requirements are listed as Helmet, Boots and spark arrestor.
Is there a Standard the helmet needs to meet or is it enough that you have one?
Mine is a 5 yr old Bell so I'd hope its OK.

There is also mention of scrutineering.
I assume that is a quick look over to ensure every thing is tight and safe.
Is there anything specific I need to ensure is done?

Prolly all sounds like dumb questions but it would be 35 yrs since I entered any sort of organised bike event and I don't want to drive a couple of hours and have hassles.

Also, what would people suggest carrying in terms of basic tools on the bike?
Or is that a bit overkill for a trail ride?

Appreciate any (good) advice.

Cheers

Your Helmet will be fine, mines even older

Only scrutineering check is spark arrestor

Well that's my first organised trail ride under my belt.
Had a throughly enjoyable day!

Everything is pretty well organised and quite low key. The school kids up-sold me on the sticky buns and everyone in the paddock was friendly and helpful.
A nice warm day helps of course!
I particularly like the way the course had the option to cater for a range of abilities

If you're ummming and ahhhing about doing one of these I'd say go for it.

Good loop, I had a few sit downs in the mud, strangely enough riding my friends IT200 I crashed once, hop back on my own bike and went down twice plus got stuck

I also lifted a bike off a guy sitting in a puddle in one of the bogs as he was stuck under it

The force he uses to grip the bars should be used to grip the seat and sidecovers with his knees and thighs

Fuck that wind was strong in places. Heading up towards the pylon, gateway before it, was hit & miss. Forest was great with excellent traction. Green grass was a problem for my daughter, with using way too much front brake on the downhills, and over she went a few times. But over all it was another great ride.

What was the ride like?

Kickaha
11th February 2018, 09:51
What was the ride like?

Worst part of it was the drive in 20km and about 40 minutes

Pretty easy on the main loop, we had intended to do Enduro loops but the dozen people we could see spread over the hillside going nowhere on the first climb soon put paid to any thoughts about that, the first hill climb I cam off on, the hill wasn't very long but very bumpy, rutted rocks etc, couple of small bogs, few river crossings, Waipara, Amberley and Mendip hills would rate higher

I developed a gearbox problem and only had 1st and 2nd 22km in, another 10km all my gears reappeared so I finished the loop but stripping it down shows a broken bit in the powervalve let a ball bearing escapes through the gearbox and I need some replacement gears and with Northern NZSBK coming up it'll be April before I get out on another one

Yes was a good ride, the first enduro hill climb was interesting, it got progressively steeper a harder, Thank god I had the Goldentyre GT-523 Gummy tyre on, that was my get out of jail free card, I got to the top and I was the second bike through the gate. The second enduro was a downhill run which was steep in places and fun, the third enduro deviation was a short steep hill climb, totally rideable but provided lots of entertainment guys flipping bikes, the rest of the ride was easy rolling country, over all a fun ride

My two photos do no justice. Jeez we , and I mean about a dozen maybe 20 went by accident reverse direction down a AA section. Took us an hour or more to get out once we decided there was little chance of getting up a step. The Bush bashing alternative made me wish I'd tried that step and hope to avoid the tree. I'd have made the step I think. About 4 foot straight up. But on an angle and aforementioned tree to miss.

Enduro 3 today my mate said he was just launching his bike out from under him up the little hill, pick it up, repeat 3-4 times to get to the top

The other week at Amberley just about everyone went down an enduro loop on lap one, it wasn't too bad but for one little steep climb at the end but created a big traffic jam

Today was a 42km lap of which half was 1-3 gear forestry which seemed like it'd never end, did two laps, ignored the Enduro deviations as per normal

It was open when we went through it on loop 2 which was just after we were talking to you, did it easy compared to the first lap when I dropped the bike right at the bottom and flooded it, once it was running I went through it with no problem, all the boggy bits seem to be hard underneath so no real traction problems

round2 north this time mean track up up and up wicked view of the Mak jet boats boosting up it... then came a mean decent shaley loose shit and steep as buggery, all good lets do this boy, well 2/3 the way down he ground to a halt, I walked back up to help I held the bike Victorious on the other side, when out of the dust came a out a control klx with a fat shella astride trying to gain control, had to be that arse of hers pushing the wee klx past any reasonable speed it should not reach, fuck I couldn't do anything she took out my boy sent him 2m face planting the track, poor wee bastard (yeah my bastard) got up and said he was ok, still in shock he got on and rode down... fucking good on him I was proud, tho hes saw as hell now.

I will leave them for pros like Dangerous! My KDX will probably have its last ride with me at a Conway coast next weekend, then out comes the Beta Xtrainer of electric start goodness. yeah... well he showed me today...

so, its like this in a tru dangerous fashion... ohh ok I fucked it all up again.

so departed over the road over the rail line look there goes the novis route, better take that as the boy (10yrs old) will crack the shits If we go full send... well apparently the novice loop ran parallel with the main track ie around Kickahas piss poor attempt at mud plugging.. but this dumb blind ranga seen a 4x4 track and thought thats our novis loop... yeah well couple a k up the RETURN TRACK yes the wrong way, I seen a red arrow... sweet thats us of we go... a bit of rock hopping cross country short cuts (hey we were 1st on it) we.. well I ended up to the tank in a fucking swamp... 10mins later after I got the fucking thing out a group of well set up professional riders rocked up with all the kit n shit, and all but one got stuck... FFS guys piss off to a enduro loop this is for us novices... well one knight in shining armour helped me out, yeah got stuck again and again on the kids bike, only cos I helped him out and he said that boys got some balls and ya not doing bad ya self on a 30yr old bike... these enduro loops aint easy... FUCK... FUCK again some bloody how I ended up going the wrong shitting way... any how went back down the access rd which apparently is the return rd and back to pit for a breather... well done son ya done ya 1st enduro loop.

noted wile trying to get the heart back to a half decent beat that we had pitted next to that cunt Kickaha... SHIT could this day get any worse...

round2 north this time mean track up up and up wicked view of the Mak jet boats boosting up it... then came a mean decent shaley loose shit and steep as buggery, all good lets do this boy, well 2/3 the way down he ground to a halt, I walked back up to help I held the bike Victorious on the other side, when out of the dust came a out a control klx with a fat shella astride trying to gain control, had to be that arse of hers pushing the wee klx past any reasonable speed it should not reach, fuck I couldn't do anything she took out my boy sent him 2m face planting the track, poor wee bastard (yeah my bastard) got up and said he was ok, still in shock he got on and rode down... fucking good on him I was proud, tho hes saw as hell now.

... river crossings.... yeah, ok so pulled up behind 3 guys decent flow rocky slimy... yeah I was warned to walk it across but with 10 guys standing around upside down bikes and the clown in front hydroplaning it across I figured 'I Got this shit"
hmmm... both me and the kdx were looking up through the water from the river bed fuck this is weird... my knight in shining armour brought me and the bike back to were it was easier to breath, and the next 30 mins was spent with the bike upside down and soooo much water coming out the plug hole, shit how long was I down there for... to fucked in the heat my night got the bike running again.
Mean while my boy went up stream and crossed meeting up with us... looks at me shaking his head... christ I coulda strangled the wee shit.
Rest went ok, awesome ride the kdx running better than ever wit freshly cleaned power valves... fuck this Im going back to road riding... till next time...

I think Mr Streeter has used all of your horsepowers on that enduro section. Also using those drum drakes on that decent! More man than most!
Yes the xtrainer is down on power compared with a 300rr but that is the whole point. A linier power delivery and heaps of torque off the bottom.

No, but l could see me going this way. The factory fitted shinkos are not great tyresShikos come rather high up in the type of riding you are doing. What model are you using? What pressures have they got?

I use a Shinko rear and it is far better than the Metz Tourance it replaced.

SVboy
25th February 2021, 05:59
A Shinko gummy 525 might be ok at this time of year as long as it is not wet but a std 525 with FIM reg height knobs is little use to man nor beast. That will be coming off and going on my adv 250 and A Bridgestone X30 at 10 psi will be replacing it. The 216 front looks aggressive but did not inspire the confidence I like in a front. That will get a Bridgestone X20 at 12 psi.

F5 Dave
25th February 2021, 06:15
I was running x20 front and x30 rear and liked that combo (with Tublis at rear which is absolutely brill). Recently changed a shinko 520 I think, and it's been great in many conditions, mates had all raved about it.

Try what F5Dave uses. Mine are a few psi lower and do fine as well. A few psi higher shouldn't be an issue either.Try a few different ones untill it suites your riding stryle. I''ll bump the front ut up 4-6 psi if doing more tarmac riding..There is no "set in concrete" pressure". But at 14 psi you will be all over the place.

Horses for courses. Pressure is varied according to the terrain you ride. We ride most commonly in the waimak trail bike park. 12psi is the minimum you run to avoid dented rims-15psi is better but I get away with lower as I weigh 75KG . However if we are on a loamy high country ride with less rocks and steep climbs and descents, we run lower and if wet, lower still.

F5 Dave
25th February 2021, 17:24
I run between 4 and 8psi with tublis as it gives a inside bottoming protection at 100psi mini inner tube. Never dented rim yet.

Yes Lees valley was excellent. I thought it might be a bit lame but was just right. Those bogs were......boggy! Good test for my damaged knee. Bring on the Gowanlee mud!

3 laps of Gowanlea and 1 enduro means I might have overdone it. I think I kicked a rock at some stage.....ouch! Good ride though. Interesting riding down the gully of death that caused so much grief last year.

That Hawarden forest ride was postponed until 25/7 because of the flooding. It was a most excellent ride-about 90% in forest with some fun tracks. 2 tricky river crossings. People were raving about it and want more of the same. Weather was el minto which always helps. Yes, will have to come out and try your track before it washes away or am I too late already?

I thought it was a bit average, I was expecting more forestry work like Waipara, first lap helped pick a young lass up out of the first river crossing when she fell off in front of me, 2nd lap had to lend my tools to an Orange bike rider to undrown his at the same spot

Peaks wasn't bad but some very slippery places, I walked my bike down one bit for about 50 metres while 7 people fell off trying to ride down

I saw you on one of Mr Streeter's Utube videos at the Peaks. Looked like quite a few were struggling on those muddy climbs. One of my mates who went is still getting over it!

After not doing to badly getting around the entire course I fell off in that gateway doing about 5kmh

We decided after lap 1 not to bother with another main loop as we thought a few hundred bikes would have made it much worse for lap 2 so we did the short loop and buggered off

Amberley, Oct 10th, probably done more laps of that one than any other, first was about 20 years ago on the same IT200
