I ride every Sunday (was out on the 765RS today in the fantastic Wairarapa). And I get a couple of multiday tours. And about 3 weekend dirtbike rides a year. But with young kids much more would be taking the piss.

Still would love to come down and see youse guys plus give you kuns a riding lesson . Maybe summer I can swing it.

My smack talk may get a bit toned down if I have to walk the walk.

Chris I'd like to give you a go on the XTr. The brakes are no better than stock.

We used to ride Weedons Ross road up to the intake then back down to Haul road fairly often, I keep forgetting to message you lot when we're going out, it's normally about 3-1/2 - 4 hours of riding, there's a bit of forestry and single track as well as the 4wd tracks

I'll put a long version up which is about the first 1/4 of the ride when I edit it

The trails on our side probably have changed a fair bit since you have done them. Sadly EC&%T have restricted access to previous prime tracks-the Willows for example. We are doing more enduro type riding-out near the river bank, which is good for challenging our riding. 2 weeks to the Peaks ride-and it is still under snow! What could possibly go wrong!

Went out on the Trialsy. Great fun. Mate managed to launch himself across the moderately flat grass area just shy of the carpark. Much amusement but kill lanyard pinged off. Found it but now have a spare magnet incase happens again as kill switch needs one to operate. Or deoperate. Or something.

Well, a funny thing about my van. I got in on Saturday and it was like the handbrake was stuck on. Couldn't free it. 3 weeks ago when I last drove it I parked on the other carpark at the riding area which meant a small stream crossing. Drums must have got water in them. Leave van 3 weeks and. . .

Had to take wheel off and give drum a tap.

Cool what year is that Warwick?

Well we were out on the Trialsy, took my GasGas and my Beta for someone to ride. Unfortunately they saw me go up a tree rooted near vertical incline and figured they could follow. I got lucky, they broke a front guard. On my bike anyway, so who's the mug?

So it had nothing to do with the gear lever practically falling off due to your shoddy maintenance ?

Cool what year is that Warwick?

2020 with 55 hours on it, somewhat different to ride than my IT200 or RMX250, nearly on a par with my big block DR143

I am just flat footed on it, I wouldn't want it to be any taller, swapped with SVboy on his new XTrainer for a bit, very different power delivery when you consider they are both the same motor, I've seen dyno charts which show the XTrainer and RR being the same to about 4000rpm but the XTrainer feels a lot better lower down and far more linear in the power delivery

Looking at the XT pipe and it would be 80cc sized. Gutless as soon as even slightly open terrain. With a Fatty pipe it is impressive. Better than my GG throughout the range. Gives it much needed snap. One size smaller carb than the RR and my mate thinks it has more bottom and the same mid as his Race. And similar top, but neither of us has spent much time exploring that in areas we ride.

I bought the needle they recommend for the RR but haven't touched the jetting as so well suited to the new pipe. Probably try it in the Race and see if we can get it to equal mine lower down. He's playing a little with the PV adjuster, I haven't wanted to touch anything, and this is me, eternal tinkerer.

Just fitted stiffer front spring. That's probably the final piece of suspension upgrade. It was twitchy before as std but is a different bike now with valving changes and rear spring. Think we are out next weekend to try it, but there is an organised Trial so might ride that.

SVboy
27th September 2022, 07:11
I really enjoyed riding Kickaha's RR300, at least on easy trails. I think I would struggle in the tight stuff-just too high for me. Suspension had the potential to be excellent-I thought the valving was too firm but it soaked up trail trash much better than the Xtrainer. It does not deflect off difficult hard hits like the Xtrainer can. Power delivery on the Xtrainer was much friendlier and usable but the RR300 was more 'fun'[like my old KDX].

SVboy
27th September 2022, 07:16
F5 Dave, can you PM me re what you have done to your suspension? What were the valving changes? Where did the new front spring come from and what rate? Cost? I can get the proper sag value on the front but am tightening the preload several turns to get there. The internet has suggested going to 20W fork oil from 15W helps.

Kickaha

I had that happen twice, the first time I thought it was just an awkward hit but then it did it again, power delivery on the X Trainer is far easier to live with

Actually I forgot to say, I checked the day after and found it was a full turn out from the stock setting which would give the power delivery a harder hit

I considered it

There's heaps of traction, but it is steep and there's a lot of tree roots so about 3/4 up it becomes more difficult especially when there's so many people spread all over it

That was a stunning ride. Amazing views. We did 2 laps and the first enduro section twice. That first section of the main track was great fun.
The guy parked up beside us was one of the chopper passengers. He had an old YZF426 with cams and shagged tyres both ends. Not the ideal trail bike...... Lap one-out the gate, down the first hill, through the bog and he pinned it up the hill. Hit a small bump, became very airborne, parted company with the WZF, and broke his leg on landing.... What was the story with the guy 'resting' halfway up that first hill climb? I think he was chopper passenger no 2. Great effort by Precision Motorcycles to organize such a good ride. Bit gutted I didnt man up to do enduro no 2. Apparently the third enduro was rather special......

I'm jealous.

We attempted the All in All out Vinduro / Trail Ride at The Farm yesterday, riding area just south of the Bay of Islands. The weather forecast was correct, it hosed down all morning and we were stupid enough to take trials bikes.

Managed to ride 300 mtrs up the first clay track before tyres and boots clogged into solid balls of spooge. Skied the bikes back down and settled in to watch the time trial section beside the pits. Carnage ensued as the course twisted up and down a steep grassy (and gorsey) hill, getting slicker every pass. The very heavy gravity caught a lot of riders out..

It's been a long time since I've seen so many battered bikes and riders. Anybody who completed all the loops and timed sections is a bloody hero!

Not sure but apparently he looped it, he had someone else with him when we went past so we didn't stop and I thought that's who the chopper was for, saw another guy with the medic with probably a collar bone guessing by the sling

Ohh, Deep Creek, nice. I'm a bit surprised at your remarkable taste.

I spent last night applying graphics to new plastics. Of course the fancy Italian plastic marked for the right year isn't a match, the rad guards are different. The Chinese graphics are a match for original plastics. Some fairly involved interpretation with scissors required.

So almost done. Virtually the whole surface has graphics, and I'm thinking having spent 2.5 hrs with another 0.5 to go; how do they do this in the factory? (better and quicker than me obviously, but it still must take them an age at Italian wages.

I spent last night applying graphics to new plastics.

Do you fall off so often you've fucked the originals ?

F5 Dave
3rd November 2022, 18:33
First time I've had a new dirtbike, so of course I crack a rad guard. Never did on every other shitter I've had.

But the std plastics are well thin. Pretty rubbish really. Pity as it looked good.

Last ride we did I stuffed it into a trench that got it stuck at a 45degree angle trying to get out, - too thin (we pulled it out with a strap then kicked the trench wider so the others could get up) . Then had to haul it under a fallen tree on that side, then fell over, on that side trying to ride up a step when my skill level disagreed with the pictures in my head.
So 3 counts then noticed it flapping in the wind on way back.

I have a huge collection of ziptied 21 model rad shrouds at home! I am trying Polisport plastics on my 22 but am still fully confident I will be able to destroy them. You have to have goals in this sport!

I'll post some pictures when I shrink them down a bit. Was at the edge of my skill level on the Bideford ride. Did a couple of A loops and I was the one who aced up the best.

Then we did this other one (Grants Grunter) that just kept going and Jezzuz! Wasn't marked as A++ but should have been. If there had been any sign of rain we would still be down there.

Apparently there were two others that were worse
One called. You're not a man until you've had a man:hug:

And the worse one Oh Deary me. They said that was Gold hard enduro . I never want to find out.

Feel good we made it. BBQ, a couple (or so) drinks. Life is good.

Will be a bit stiff tomorrow I'm sure.

Geez got to get fitter. Also got crazy cramp going up the worst hill. Only made it up with my patented flailing limb technique.

Here's a couple of pics.

The camera I think does pick up how steep it was. We sat at the bottom for about 10 minutes before we attempted it. I got cramp in my hand 1/2 way up so glad I didn't fall off & roll back down. Last pic from the top. Glad traction was good.

Clicking them puts into correct orientation.

F5 Dave
7th November 2022, 08:33
another A, but much easier. There was a nasty bog at the bottom that I circumnavigated & the others did too after extracting themselves messily from it.

We sat at the bottom for about 10 minutes before we attempted it.

I find the longer I sit there the less enthused I am about trying it

F5 Dave
7th November 2022, 18:49
Ok it was probably 15 minutes:sweatdrop. But there was no other way out once we were down there. Had to bulldog the bike down the hill to get there, others had fallen trying to ride down so we certainly couldn't have gone back.

TBH the traction was good if you kept going. There were a few that speared off to the sides and there seemed to be a long time between catching glimpses of them trying to extract themselves.
We also helped a poor chap who had fallen off in the loop and had no clutch lever. My mate swapped his front brake and amazingly they got it to work a bit. He wouldn't have got out without clutch control. He found a gate at the top and went back on gravel road. Which was good as he would have died attempting the next bit without a front brake.

i have had most success gluing plastics by using flat plastics gussets underneath to spread the load like a large weld fillet i guess.
looks ugly but works
I normally use araldite or similar ,i have not used this for bendy plastics though.
i have heard of people adding baking soda to superglue. is this for colour or strength?

people suggest you can take out the white or discoured bit from a bend or fracture of break or bend with a heat gun i have never tried...

There is a discussion about trials and riding age on another forum, some riders are in their 80's, most contributors say a similar thing. Still learning, still improving, still riding.

No, it's not scored or anything. I went with the cruisers rather than the silly buggers.
But it was so slippery it turned into a messy affair. A lot of crabbing along the side of steep tight endless hills with wet tree roots.

Sort of thing Chris Birch would struggle with. . . on a Superduke with slicks. Maybe.

I spent a bit of time crawling on my knees dragging a bike over things and lifting over tree trunks I didn't have the guts to fully attempt.

By the end I was knackered.

Was not too bad. I still pushed my bike through rather than become the victim of didymo slime! Great ride! Fabulous weather-very dry which as a bit sad as the bogs were not up to much. Next weekend is Amberly.

Wellington ride today. I didn't go. Went to Trial instead.

Fantastic area. An old mate was there with another wisened hand. They pissed around like two old women. But so valuable for teaching lines and technique.

Also newbie turned up on Huski so let him ride my bike as well.

I displayed some occasional mastery.

Interdispersed with some complete muppetry.

Great day, but had to drop out with 25 of possible 30 sections (10 per lap) complete. Needed to get home as on a promise. Happy with performance there too. :wari:

It'd need suspension work to have one long term but it was surprisingly good, 7400km over 14 days, Melbourne to Cairns return, got treated like a trail bike at times and only had to pick it up 3 times compared to 5 times for Ricards T7 in the first two days

Dansey's Pass. Epic. 1200 plus riders. The three of us spent the whole day in the Advanced Tree section. It was a 50km enduro section. Unrelenting but we all did it. I am so sore....... Brilliant weather, rained heavily the night before so it was as slippery as fuck in most places. All I can say is the Xtrainer with a gummy on the back is a god! Left the paddock just after 9am-got back just before the track closed at 3.00!

I have a TUSK recon on the back. Complete game changer. On the strength of this I have ordered a SHINKO 525 Cheater for next time. Only down side is slippery downhills where a soft[Hard] tyre would offer better stability.

How well do the gummys / cheaters go on wet clay and teflon tree roots?

I have a relatively hard rear on my CRM and it's crap. Will spin effortlessly, even on a dry surface at low rippums.

Did consider putting a trials hybrid tyre on. Apparently the trials hybrid grips like a trials tyre but does not clog as easily.

Couldn't tell you as I haven't used them in those situations, but it has considerably more "feel" hooks up awesome and slides more predictably than anything I have ever used, primarily farmland, forestry and river bed where I am, this is on a 1998 RMX250

Cheers. It's your bike that prompted the question as much as tyres. My Honda is a 93 and the power delivery lacks subtlety, and decent suspension, to put it mildly.

Look at the needle to smooth delivery out. Try up and down a clip, or then alternative. Usually a bigger base diameter.

I put an FMF Gnarly pipe on it so I don't wreck the original and it saves a load of weight. The downside is a bit less bottom end but a lot more mid range and top end. Or their would be if I looked at the needle, it fluffs at high revs.
I only notice it fluffing at Vinduros, belting across big paddocks and open tracks trying to out drag KTM's in the trail class, otherwise I'm riding in gnadgery.

Putting the original pipe back on would bring the tractor back.

Next time I'm out I should set aside some time to play with the needle and see what happens. Apart from losing screws in the grass..

Thanks for the reply.

Come to think of it, I've never even checked the plug since I changed the pipe...

Lazy git.

F5 Dave
22nd March 2023, 16:00
Think only of throttle position on 2 stroke carbs. Not revs.

Write that down on garage wall.

Drop a size or two on main should fix fluffing. If it was bitching it would be lean. And you would go up.

Clean Pilot jet out, replace plug before you do anything.

Consult garage wall.
Try screwing idle mixture in and out to see what happens in the off closed to slightly open position.
If you go too far in or out change Pilot that direction. In is richer..

Experiment with needle one position and see what happens. Clip up drops the needle which means it is leaner sooner. That can't change the base diameter.

Consult garage wall.

The jetting will help the pipe live its best life.

Clean out your fuel tap and filter and stop riding a two stroke at constant throttle :)

if you mean its wooly or rich ie spluttering but you could also drop your needle lower or use a fatter esp in the lower profile.
if its a mikuni (which i guess it is)you can try a new needle jet as the one you have will be worn oval by now.
if its a PWK keihin these aren't generally replaceable you have to use a fatter needle to compensate.

ps stop stealing out mud. It absolutely pissed down on Friday night here.

I probably have the right needle downstairs we were going to try on my mates Race. I bought it for the XTrainer as it is one people recommend, but once I changed to the Fatty the surging (at about 1/3 throttle, I briefly had it legal) disappeared and it is just wonderful everywhere. Still might try it just to see.

Anyhoo I'll look up the number. I also got a NEDJ at the same time as it works well in other 300s (RM250 option).

So what needle and jetting are you running in your Xtrainer? I have removed the airbox lid on mine-36 pilot, 160 main needle dropped on clip IIRC. A wee bit fat in the lower midrange esp on a constant throttle opening. Symptoms more noticeable when it is warmer. Air bleed has been opened out.

With std setup it surged as described and was pretty gutless compared to my GG300.

I fitted a Fatty pipe and bought a couple of needles to experiment.

And rode it. Wow. Two mates said wow, one went out to replace his GG the next day with a Race (he's taller). The other still raves about it.
More powerful everywhere to my GG which went well. Strangely it seems to go a little better down low than the Race, but we haven't played with its jetting. Same engine but 38mm carb vs 36. And factory pipe. Vs FMF Fatty.

Carb remains unopened. Might have tweaked the mix screw. Pipe just seems to suit it. It is more vulnerable, but. . .
