Did some pre Amberley bike testing on the weekend, dragged out the mighty DR143 big block as I might do a lap on that while Madness rides his TF125

Mint day at Amberley, the mighty DR143 big block climbed every hill in its path, unlike the 2020 X Trainer I passed while it lay on it's side and the 300RR I passed in the muddy gully and the KTM400 stuck on a hill along with various other lesser bikes

What can l say....l was making good progress up a vertical cliff when l was deafened by the roar of a big block Dr behind me. I would have made the climb but was blown off the bike by the roost as kick came past....on the back wheel!

No, l did the training day out there the day before and l was just stuffed. We finished 1 lap and that was that. Very pleased after seeing that mess! The good rider in our group did two and ran into the bottleneck.

Suspension is dreadful standard too.

Linton's secret track is a secret no more!

I'm not sure it ever was, pretty sure he has more than one as well

When I first did it several weeks ago no one had been over it for ages but you could still see the paint marks on the trees and faint trail marks, this time someone had been out cleaning it up a bit and painting new arrows, it's a bit tight and twisty for my liking but it's good practice

the other trails are much more well known and used

I really need better batteries for my camera and just to follow you for a lap

Conway Coast has been cancelled

I was heading up said hill when a guy on a DRZ400 comes flying up beside me, as his rear wheel gets to about my front he loses traction, it turns an abrupt 90 degrees and fires it straight across in front of me, does another 90 degree turn back the other way and ends up parked right in front of me, I was going to just use his bike for a ramp but thought better of it and stopped just in time

One of the RM250 needle options is the NEDJ, works well in lots of bikes, perhaps find out what the RMX has in it and see what its running, if it has a smaller base diameter, could be worth a try. The only RMX I rode sounded a bit like that on small throttle openings.

It's got whatever was factory in the PJ carb that came off it (most likely DGN, R1472L 1L), I just swapped internals into the PWK, I'm not fussy enough to care even though I know it is not 100 %

I know I've gone down a couple of main jet sizes and leaned it out one clip on the needle

Keihin needs a good kicking for not making the needle jet easily replaceable like a Mikuni

Yours doesn't sound as bad mine , it was like a 125 powerband to ride only 2.5 times the power. yours is still pretty smooth and linear sounding just fat sounding past the pilot

How it works is because of being incredibly lazy, I will not take the carb off unless it is totally necessary, but if for some reason I do I would look at the jetting then, until that day it stays as it is

It becomes well worth putting up with it when you ride past guys on later bikes stuck on the sides of hills, bogs or drowned in rivers (disclaimer: only done 2 out of 3 of those so far), I just loves my Mighty DR143 big block but it has a whopping 7 inches of rear suspension travel

If you stick the front end off a DT125R on and move the rear shock mounts back a bit for real shocks, they turn into superb trail bikes.

Used to have a DT 175 set up like that, loved it. Went anywhere!

Off topic but this is the only action in dirt area. Week ago rode the Xtrainer after suspension mods. They are a queer set up but huge transformation. It used to feel pretty dicey and twitchy on anything other than hardpack.

I did 4 loops on the dry side of Tora and with a couple of tweaks found myself able to throw the bike into rough stuff at speed with reckless abandon. I was going for gay abandon, but it really is that much better. Next step, the stiffer rear spring finally turned up.

This track didn't have pounding whoops so I'll reserve judgement on whether the forks are good enough long term. Putting a bit more oil in as I did bottom them going uphill bump at speed.

Missed that memo. I finally bought some new kit that actually matched my bike. Or didn't clash with it for once. Then I bought a bike with an entirely different palette. Oh well.

So like every piston in the forks and shock are the same part. Moved compression adjuster, radically different valving and bit more flow on one of them. Bryce up here did it and it is a considerable change. Not up to KYB SSS forks standard, but for what we started with, everything is a bit queer and small.

Mt Benger was on the Hurunui bluffs Road-first time for me but I think it was run last year. I was in hospital having the kidney stone experience at the time..... Sadly that was not me at the top of those hill climbs. Some young talented bastard. However I was at the bottom watching! They were brutal and not many made the second one. It was a pleasant ride but could be more challenging. Yes, Port Levy this weekend-I did that a few years ago and it was sweet. Stunning views.
Interesting about the suspension Dave. I rode a Beta 200RR recently and the suspension damping was so much more controlled but of course the payback was a higher seat. I am ok with mine-the sags are right as are the spring rates, and the bike as never designed as a go fast weapon in the flowing trails.

Port Levy was all the awesome. Slippery and steep with superb views. 2 very tricky climbs about 2/3rds through-wet clay and exposed rock. These caused huge bottlenecks and diversions had to be put into place eventually. Lucky, there was some crazy weather and no rides up here for. . . Well only enduros posted bar Taupo Berm Busters.

I also had a sweet spot for no rain. Testing new to me GasGas Trialsy. Fell off in carpark then a few times later. Didn't go more than about 300m from the van. Had a blast.

Need to get the other one going so I can blood some of my mates into this.

I sold my 200 yrs ago for same reason. But you only need a tiny bit of land and an hour to practice doing something. It will teach skills for dirtbike. I got another (actually 2) as rides up here are a bit sparce, but also as I missed it.

Do it! A bit of log on a slope will tie you in knots for months trying to perfect balance and angles. Then get a bigger log..

T'other thing I get from my trialsy is utter exhaustion after doing nothing whatsoever spectacular. They are cruel and unusual machines, love em.

Lowry Peaks was......good. The main track was 32kms of straight forward farm track-not too muddy or slippery. The weather was probably the best weather in NZ at that time! However the enduro sections required Jarvis like skills! I could not even get my bike pointed in the right direction for the first hillclimb! If it was not for the help of the talented rider I ride with, my corpse would still be there. #Bittenoffmore than hecouldchew!

Forecast looked shit and given how crap and muddy it was there last time I didn't bother, off for another ride down a river next weekend though, weather permitting

I've had a go on a couple but I just don't have the attention span to put the time in to get good at it, I'll stick to just being mediocre on a trail bike rather than on both a Trail bike and a Trials bike

Leftfield question..

Any of you fullas running mousses?

My interest has been piqued listening to Johnny Walkers commentary at Erzberg. He was talking about how the grip from soft tyres and mousses have pushed hard enduro to the level we see now.

I'm used to a soft trials tyre but they are pants in wet clay.

Fitted one in my 1998 RMX250 along with a MotoZ Arena Hybrid recently, fuck me it's impressive, ran it at 8psi first time out on some pretty slippery stuff and it hooked up better than I thought possible, lot more feel while braking, made the front feel like shit though, might have to kit out the mighty DR143 big block to help contain the power

I figured they would be a bit different. Torquey 300's can tractor up some horrible hills with a good rider but when it goes wrong it can go really wrong.

Weight and agility are key for me, after 4 or 5 hours on those tracks with my wee 125 4t trials bike I'm spent. 2 hours on the CRM and I'm wishing for a helicopter.

Actually Beta was initially the superior technology, but VHS was cheaper and that's what the porn industry standardised on as picture quality wasn't that high on the priorities list. So grubby little perverts like yourself sealed its fate. Sony did go on to other successful products though.

What area do you call the bike park?

Weedons Ross Road- down past West Melton Airfield-over the stop bank. The Cunterbury Regional council have been 'nice' enough to give us two blocks, one is down river from Weedons Ross and goes down to Mcleans Island-straight forward flowing one way single track.
Up river side there is a big tree block single trail which is great. Quite flowing but technical enough to be interesting. Also in that area is the river bank/flood plain which contains a maze of excellent technical single track. The only problem with the river bank is that it is so hard to learn what goes where! I have done it a fair bit, always following someone who knows and I just cant remember it. Alzeimers anyone?
If you stray further upstream out of the legal boundaries and avoid the Rangers, there is a good tree block above the old Willows site[RIP-been taken over by mountain bikers and Motorhomes ffs!] leading on to a block of fun flowing single trail ending at the irrigation intake where the CNUTs took down the bridge. However the intake channel is fordable usually-leading to some great tree block single trail and then onto the river roads all the way up to the Waimak Gorge, but that's more adventure bike territory.
If you feel up to it, we will be out there tomorrow at Ten. We realize you would have to slow down for us but thems the breaks....
