View Full Version : Wellington: Wgtn - The Real Thursday Night Ride (TRTNR)
madboy
24th January 2006, 12:49
Every Thursday evening during daylight savings (weather permitting).
When: 6pm. Ride leaves at 6.30pm SHARP
Where: The avalon duckpond just over the kennedy-good bridge off SH2 in Lower Hutt.
Route: To be determined on the day (usually 1-2 hours MAX incl shit-talking)
Destination: To be decided on the day
Pace: All paces welcome. The fast guys will wait and route details and meet points are usually determined before we set out. Please note that most routes will involve open road riding at some point (100km/h is the speed limit!).
Please also note that this ride is a gathering of like minded individuals who believe strongly in personal responsibility. I'm posting meet details for your information only.
It is your responsibility to ensure that both you and your bike are up to it. We don't care what license you have or what stickers are attached to your bike. What we care about is that you have enough common sense and skill to respect our safety and yours.
Newbies - read the above two paragraphs REALLY closely. This is not a full-on "briefing at the start, designated riding order, buddy up the newbies, split into groups" ride. We meet up, talk some shit, decide where we're going, ride there, talk some shit, ride back. Nothing formal at all. You're welcome to come. We're a friendly bunch, we're glad to pass on any help we can and we don't bite (unless you're hot, female and ask nicely). But we ask that you be CAREFUL. I don't try and keep up with the fast guys, you shouldn't either!
This thread is intended as a sticky, and subsequent posts will be deleted periodically to keep this current.
Wank over, ride on.

Just got back.
Fantastic ride over the Takas and back. What was with that cop that came flying up the hill? Did he stop in Featherston?
How was PieCock?
Wasp
2nd February 2006, 21:15
Great ride tonight, i'm still grinning :).
I got my foot down again comming back down the takas (happening more frequently now) and got some lift of the front tire out of some roundabouts!
I asked about the cop at the pub, apparently he came flying down the hill behind one of us, Madboy? i think, so whoever the biker was pulled up but the cop just went past... well thats what i remember being told anyway, some of its probably wrong.

I got to Featherston and had turned around and was heading back up the hill, the cop passed me (coming down the hill) and he was following the dude on the blue VTR.
Thinking about it...it was obvious that he wasn't coming after us...he wouldn't have had his disco lights on all the way up the hill if he was.

I too had a good night thanks. Had to go to concert too early dammit.
I think my riding has either improved with a new rear tyre, or some extra kms in the SI...or trying to keep up with the sportsbikes heading down the hill.

There I was this law abiding rider heading up SH2 for a ride up the Hill when I got swallowed up by TRTNR gang/group/bunch/society/political party/bloody hoons (pick one). Impressive sight, must try and join you next Thursday.
How the hell does Jade extract so much speed from that bike? Must be a Honda thing. Well done that Girl.
Bugger you split in half at the Haywards Hill turnoff. I was heading off for a beer at Martinborough with the Guy on the red & white R1, when I realised all you buggers must have mistaken us for the lead riders. Ha, I was waiting to see how far you would follow before realising. ps- the R1 rider is a supreme master of wheelies, pity you missed the show.

We'd decided to split into to two groups before setting out, there must have been about 20 (Deano, what was your count?) of us at the meeting point and some wanted to do PieCock & some were keen for the Takas.
It looked bloody impressive when we got to that set of light, bikes spread across both lanes and about 5 deep!

Yeah, I thought Fatjim was in for a good rodgering from the fuzz there for a minute, particularly when he pulled over for them. What was up with that? Hell if bikers keep doing that the cops will start to think they have a chance!
I thought for a minute there they might have been wanting a chat about the two car drivers that got educated on the merits of INDICATORS being used before pulling out into the passing lanes on the UH side. But no, he didn't want to talk to that bike either.

I can't decide on this weather. I think I might flag the ride given the uncertainty. Doesn't help that I'm going to Oz in the morning so have a few loose ends to polish off. Might make the pub but again doubtful. For those who go, have fun.
And Sparky? Your reasons for not coming are sadder and sadder... Two allen bolts will solve those problems. Although I can understand how you might be very concerned about having to live that lifestyle, particularly with only a Honda to back you up.

Not trying to be nasty to anyone or anything, but this is precisely why I don't like turning up. In all honesty I find it stressful holding everyone else up, Ive been undertaken on these rides as well as having people moaning about my bike smoking and how I ride.... I wouldn't worry about holding people up...half of this event is about riding, the other half is about trash-talking. So even if you arrive last...you're not actually holding anyone up.
If I was you...I'd have a quiet word to those that undertake you (hope it wasn't me) and just let them know that it's not on!

Wasp, its all good mate! Especially after I hassled you so much for running out of gas!
SS, nah mate wasnt you. Being an inexperienced rider its kind of embarrasing "confronting" the people that do this as they are always way faster and more experienced riders not to mention the fact they are also twice my size.....

The whole situation's quite disturbing actually cause it happened twice and I wasn't even going that hard. Quite a bit. Get someone to set up the front end properly.
Are you hanging onto the bars tight enough ? I get the odd head shake if I get lazy, and that's with a steering dampener.

Yeah - it wasn't a wobble - it was a serious flicking from side to side. Bit of a confidence shaker. But yeah - I better sort the suspension before I do anything else.
James Deuce
24th February 2006, 12:59
The tighter you hold the bars the WORSE the headshake will get.
Human arms, especially girly ones, aren't capable of damping an oscillation of that amplitude and force, and trying to fight a slapper usually ends up with you feeding force into the bar dance at the wrong part of the cycle.
If I was you V the first thing I'd look at doing is getting lighter fork springs and re-spring the rear shock. You're even tinier than the monkeys they develop 600s around.
Then get your sag set right. I mean the bike's sag. Sorry.
In the mean time, get someone to help you with static sag. You'll need two other people who can lift each end of your bike, one end at a time with you on it, and they'll need to be able to write and take measurements, so no Gorillas OK?
Knock the compression damping right off to about 2 clicks from softest. Set rebound to about 4 from softest front and rear. You need compliant suspension that works in the best part of its travel to deal with bumpy roads. Don't go for racetrack settings, particularly with you being as light as you are.
limbimtimwim
24th February 2006, 13:47
But yeah - I better sort the suspension before I do anything else.Tyres (front and back) effect the stability of the thing. Perhaps you have more unstable tyres than Honda intended. My conservative, weak little RVF is twichier than it was on the new tyres. Also, it's done 20,000km right? Perhaps the head bearings could do with a tighten, which could also help.
Don't go for racetrack settings, particularly with you being as light as you are.I have to admit, I thought your cowpoos 600rr has Boi Ricer hard suspension.
Have you ever seen a shopping trolly with a wobbly wheel? Skimming across the ground and flicking around?

Steering dampener would help heaps. Suzuki put a cheap and cheerful one on the GSXRs but it makes all the difference. Fully adjusted suspension won't help that much.

A steering dampener should help a lot, I have had the same probs with a lot of bikes, I think they are all built with 80kg rider weights in mind. I have a spare Ohlins dampener you can borrow for a while and try, see if it's going to help before you throw over some pingers to buy one. Not sure how to go about mounting it on the CBR, but the Motomart guys will help you with that one.

I must be super strong then, cause in my experience, not holding the bars with enough grip will certainly allow the bars to start shaking in the first place.
I've found if I'm too relaxed on the bars switching from left to right over bumpy surface, bars can shake. Hold on tight - no shake.
Doesn't extra pressure on the bars through tight bumpy corners act like a dampener ?
Once the bars are in a full slap it's probably too late to do much of anything except pray.

I guess they have to even up the odds somehow. The radio didn't do a fat lot of good. And cars aren't worth the time of day to a bike... But in all seriousness, you can't have a cop chasing you on that thing. Imagine the public outcry when word got out the fuzz were pulling 280k chasing a biker down a public road... And let's face it, that's what they'd need to be doing against another thou on the open road. I know if I was being chased by one I'd be tapped out bloody everywhere waiting for them to off it.
Helicopters are the only hope they've got. That and luck (i.e. the rider offs it, the rider gets spiked, someone gets the plate or the bike gets seen parking up). None of the last four happen often in my experience, contrary to what the lurkers publicly say. And Wgtn's population and geography doesn't support a helicopter, so it's still open seasion :devil2:

I reckon we send you Cam up the hill first 20min ahead of us. Stick Dreamer at the back for a gentle ride up the hill making that bike of her's so wide no fuzz can get past, and the rest do what they friggin like!
Either that or attack another place next week. I vote for central lower hutt. Plenty of mobile chicanes, excellent lanesplitting opportunities and tons of innocent pedestrians to break our bikes fall if we cock up. Or alternatively we could just continue enjoying a buzz on a road with less traffic and less chance to harming anyone but ourselves. I don't know, just a random thought.
I'm off to bed now. Gonna make sure I eat my wheaties next time so that I've got the energy to come out next week - looks like I missed a cracker!

Well what a night of shinanigans. I wondered how long it would take the cops to start looking out for us on Thurs. Or one in particular anyway. It was bound to happen but at least it's getting darker these days so we eventually won't be doing the TRTNRs. Hang on - that sound like submission! We'll be somewhere else at a diff time in the week instead!
I figure all we can do is....
1) Get a cop detector (going to look into it next week).
2) Vary the roads we use a bit more.
3) Never post personal details like real names or where we live cause big brother is watching.
4) Possibly all take off our plates (you like that one don't ya boys in blue that are watching!), allthough that's not my prefered option. Actually, I'd prob only do that if I was riding by myself.

So that's what a road block looks like.
Our friendly boy in Fluro looked a bit pissed when he asked me where had I come from and all I answered was "that way"...pointing behind me.
I felt like a rolling target tonight.
If they can put in that much effort into trying to catch one bike, imagine what they could acheive with the "boy racer" problem.
Seriously tho....Glad no one got hurt as these things have the potential to go horribly wrong.......not recommended.
VasalineWarrior
9th March 2006, 23:38
Velox- a radar only gives you a 2-3 second warning though, and it cant detect laser unless they leave it on (which they dont, they simply point it at individual targets and press the trigger). This basically means you are safe 20-30km/hr over the limit but with anything over this you wont have time to rub off enough speed before they get a lock on. This gets us back to square one if you are doing 140+, which means you have to run\hide otherwise your gonna be walking home.
Intrestingly enough though, laser jammers are not illegal (even though radar jammers are). Anyone have one and can offer some advice?

I dunno about that UB - I don't think we've ever had any crashes on a TRTNR have we? Apart from a couple of wheelie ones which don't count. And people don't usually ride that dodgey, as in dangerously or outside their abilities. Fast yes but not unsafe.
Oh - or were you meaning the fact that they put up a road block?
[EDIT] Oh hang on, you prob meant people hooning away from the cops. Yeah - I agree, that can def turn out nasty sometimes.

He actually came into work just the other day. He's going back to Gisborne in a week or so for another operation. He seems to be doing ok, but he is quite down about not riding again.

Big ups to the truck driver that gave some of us the headlight flash. Im sure I would have been stopped wrecklessly riding.
What leaves me with the bad taste in my mouth about the whole thing is not so much that someone got caught (sorry bud), but the 5-0 clearly used the thread to find us last night. We didnt specificly say "we are going to go for a ride tonight and cause mayhem and knowingly endanger some people".

I don't value radar detectors. Radar has "instant on" so if it's not on, you don't get it. You have to rely on the cop being lazy and leaving it on, or pinging someone else up ahead and you picking up the scatter. Laser is worse, bugger all scatter and basically a radar detector just tells you you've been pinged. Too late by then.
If I were considering another radar I'd be looking at a jammer not a detector. So what if it's illegal, so's speeding. If you're not ready to take the consequences, don't do it in the first place.
My preference is a good set of tyres, confidence, local knowledge and a good understanding of police procedure. That'll get you out of the big tickets better than any radar detector will.

[EDIT] Oh hang on, you prob meant people hooning away from the cops. Yeah - I agree, that can def turn out nasty sometimes.
You can get carried away in the heat of the moment and make a bad desigion which could have grave consequences and no one wants that...not even the police.

Look, don't take this the wrong way but it's their job to do that... Try to look at it from the 'other' side. Don't take it personally just because you consider yourself 'nice' people.. Being nice, working, educated and a biker does not place you above the law or give you a get out of jail free card. Effectively, a group of people are conspiring to break the law.. Of course they have to do something about it...
Plus, lets think about it. EVERY Thursday night for quite some time a group of Wellington bikers has been out enjoying themselves... How long do you think you can do that without them noticing or other regular commuters commenting or complaining? How many KB stickers, tee shirts etc do you think they have seen... The amazing thing is not that someone finally got pinged but that they left you alone and you got away with it for so long..

Intrestingly enough though, laser jammers are not illegal (even though radar jammers are). Anyone have one and can offer some advice?
Radar jammers are illegal because you need to be a licenced to transmit on the radio airwaves, which is what a radar jammer does.
Laser however, being optical, has no transmission licencing system.
Just incase, I'm removing my personal contact details from my profile. As it is possible for the Police to gain access to the KB database if they pursue it.
What pisses me off about the Police force is that there is no one individual Police member with the balls to setup a two minute profile. Log in here and raise his/her concerns!
That would be a respectful thing to do.
Obviously they would get shit slung from all directions, but us KB'ers would have to agree that they were being reasonable and rational.
So how about it coppers? Afterall, your White Nissan Maxima mufti cop on the rimutakas (thursday night) insists he reads the forums. Why doesn't he speak up like our multiple other Police members do? Or are these WGTN cops (like the Maxima dude) leaving all the dirty work to the female officers?

Shit Mikey, Keep it down!
I've got to get my crops replanted before this shit weather sets in hard. Last thing I need is cops on the hill on Cultivation Sundays!
I don't have enough plants to pay off the cops and keep the local Colleges supplied! Not until next seasons crops get cranking!
Although I have got plenty of P now, the whole lacing trick has been working a dream. Great for buisiness. Even got Two regular officers now!

I think we're over estimated our importance in the big scheme. I've heard there was a sweep up of boy racers at the LH carpark Thursday night. My guess is we were just a a small unexpected side dish that fell in their lap.
As for the HP waiting at Kaitoke. What's new about that, they've been turning up there for years. HP patrol highways! It's their job, get used to it. Amazing thing is how often they leave us alone. Throwing shit at them on here is not going to help is it. That's clever, lets abuse every cop and then we can all have something to moan about because we've invited them to target us.
I do enough stupid stuff myself to attract their attention without having the local plod full of anti-bikers.
So can we have some calm now.
If any Plod reads this. You're a great bunch, we love you, it's just some of us have a strange way of expressing it. Now I'm sure you have other more important types to pursue instead of boring bikers. If that doesn't work, I for one support the alternative back hander approach to traffic fines.

Too true MD. When I spoke with the HP investigator that was working Sam's death he told me that they know full well where we go and what we get up too. They aint stupid. They give a fair bit of tolerance really. Moral is don't ride like cunts on the main highway and don't fuck off other car drivers and don't fuck off the law. If some cop pulls you up take it on the chin, then find out his name and email him some dirty photos, that way he'll get the sack. (PT)
