Theres a small write up on the Karro T in kiwirider this month, the writer has been trying it out on his dl1000 vee strom, he's happy with it.
but yeah i found the e09 on the BIG worked well for me, but like most knobs they let go on the wet seal, but fantasic in the dry
would the E-07 work on the orange bus:laugh:

I Chickened out and went with a new Kenda 760 trackmaster for the DR (just couldn't bear to give up all that sand grip)
Is the E-07 rated for the 200+kph sand runs the orange bus gets called up to do from time to time :woohoo:
PS, Am doing a Gravel run from Kumue with the Northern Gravel riders this Sat if your up for it (might post on other thread to)

Done about 700kms on my shinko 244 rear and I hate the friggen thing so far. Can't wait for it to wear out. Will have to spin it up a lot on the db.
I like mt21 front and rears Nordie,
Quoting myself, but after the Dustybutt my opinion has changed. Its a great tyre and I will get another one. 3200kms so far and its 3/4 worn so thats about par for course.

not so much throttle , more to do with weight
127kgs dry so she's light in the arse.... just how i like my bikes;)
760's a good aggressive tyre, triboys had one on the back of his XR for the last year

Yep I ran one last year, got about 6000km out of it, was ok, prefer a TKC80 since they are about the same price ( I got 8000km out of the TKC ) both run in a 140/80

The Shinko 700 done OK on the DB1k..
It lost about 25% of its rubber over 1600km
would have been 50/50 gravel/seal...
4000 kms seem possable if replaced at 75% worn...
Has a soft rubber so grips well on hard surfaces..
no chunks riped out & nobbs retained there leading edges quite well..
130/17 is $150

That sounds positive. Looks like the DT will be getting a shinko 704 on the rear in the very near future. I'm at a loss to explain why the current tire has worn so quickly. It's a vee rubber with a similar tread pattern to the 705, I thought it would last forever. Seemed to have loads of tread left but when I gave the bike a once over after a couple of enthusiastic gravel & tar seal runs recently it's down to 2mm or so. Munted.

I've run about 4 of these on yhe back of the KLR. Never had a problem with them. Not that great in sand or mud, but ok.Best km would be about 4500, and worst was about 3500.
not sure they come in a 130 profile for 17" rims, I normally get the 5.10 / 17. Just picked a new one up today for $118 (not fitted)

Hi folks ...sorry this has probably been asked before but just want a fresh opinion for peace of mind . i have gone through alot of this thread and cant make up my mind
I just bought a DRZ 400 and it's running a kenda k270 on the rear and TW41 on the front . would like to go more aggressive on the front for better off road handling . what could you recommend ...was looking at a kenda k670 but not too sure . I'm fairly new to getting off the hard stuff so want as much confidence in the front end as i can get . will only use the bike for the odd fair weather commute and to get to the trails of course so happy to sacrifice on road capability for more off road .
basically looking for a good all rounder for the welly region .. if such a thing exists

New Mitas Tyre in town... they are thinking/hoping it might be a better compettitor for the TKC80 front...
Dirt Action Services, Saxon Street have a rear here in ChCh now, fronts still coming.
17" or 18"(can't remember) rear (pic attached) sitting next to TKC80 rear mounted.... Mitas 644 Army rear cost about $188.
Mitas Army 21" Front expected to be about $139 so if the front works as well as the TKC front then may be worth a go at that price.
Front pattern is said to be very much the same as the rear one in picture attached.

The real interest lies in the performance of the fronts compared to TKC's... when they arrive.
Until now they have only had the E09 or E10 options in the same arena.

At the recent Cambridge to Hamilton Child Cancer Toy run her indoors won a voucher from a local bike shop for the supply and fitting of a Bridgestone tyre to the value of $300.
Bearing in mind Bridgestone make the famous 'Deathwings' but not all trail wings are the same, whats the best Bridgstone tyre to get to go on a DR650?
Tyres aren't actually needed right now but there's a time limit on redemption of the voucher so we need to choose something and get it done by the end of next month.

hard to think of a Bridgestone dualsport that will get close to 300, there are a couple of expensive ones but nothing i would use as they are soooo NOT aggressive

or ya get down to the TW 18, 302, 26 etc ranging betweem $100-170

Dunlop 605 on the front... not 100% sold on them... Get a bit of wash out every
now and then... I may just be exspecting to much from it..
think I will give a 700 front a try next tyre change..
I tend to stay away from full blown knobblys on the XT.
most of the places I ride it are dry/hard surface..so I look
for a softish tyre with good surface area / contact patch size..

just had some Shinko E705 fitted today. I wanted something a bit more aggressive but there isn't that may options with a 19" front.
Also the funds didn't allow for something with more of a knobbly tread pattern.
I paid $300 new for both front & rear. At Easter I'm planning on riding over the Dunstan trail/ Thompson track over to my caravan in Bannockburn
Day 2 over the Nevis to Garston up to Queenstown and over Skippers canyon and probley some other places :scooter:

I was thinking of the Pirelli MT90 A/T's since they are nice and cheap and pretty much fit the profile and have the right sizes 90/90-21 and 140/80-18
Anyone got any recommendations?

+1 The MT 90 A/T on the front of the TDM is doing a sterling job. Far better than expected on wet roads too once you get past the wee bit of tread creep.

I concur. Not bashing in any way, manner or form but I don't think they like BMW's, they seem to suffer this problem the most. I'm guessing that is your steed. I have a 705 radial on the back of the TDM & it's giving sterling service on a lardy bike. Weird.
Is your bike a shafty? Could be the common denominator, but why? No idea.

I've been running 36psi front & rear
so just keep an eye on them, the guys running these on 650's don't seem to be having the same trouble from what I hear so maybe it's just a big bike thing

The bonding of the rubber to the carcass doesn't seem to be consistent in the bigger sizes.
The Wee is about 30kg lighter than the 1150 to start with and the BMW is a more common candidate for being loaded up...
Just stick a bias 130 section on and it'll all be sweet :scooter:

but it is the last time I will use these as the mitas Eo7's work realy well on the beammer & give better k's
Although increasing in popularity, I am still miffed why Mitas is not more popular here in NZ than what it currently is; great patterns and great compounds for adventure riding.

What are the 705's like on cold wet roads? I spend most of my time commuting but would like a slightly more aggressive tyre than the Tourance on my bike. I've been very happy with Anakees in the past, but the 705s seem a little more aggressive.

I've had a couple of "moments" from the 705 rear on the TDM. In fairness just slight slips on the throttle due to white paint & a polished patch. On a recent ride over the Mangamukas in rain after a long dry spell the bike never moved. Plenty of steeply off cambered corners through there. Over all I'm happy but don't take liberties in the wet. Our roads are atrocious too.
I don't really have reason to criticise them and I can only compare the outright grip to a sport touring tire as the shinko is the only dual porpoise tire I have used.

I went from a Tourance to a Fullbore M41 (basically same as 705 bias) on the back of the Freewind. My experience is that once settled in it is as good as the Tourance on cold wet roads (mind you, "cold" is relative in Auckland). OTOH, the Kenda 761 I also tried was worrying on wet seal. I will buy M40/M41's or 705's again.

I once had a set of Mitas E-08s (the Tourance equivalents). Not bad in gravel or on dry roads. They were very slippery in cold wet roads. Lasted forever, but they scared me a few times so I biffed them before I could wear them out. Are E-07s any better? I would expect them to use the same compound. I would surrender some mileage for better grip on cold wet roads.

This is very true and E07's also have no record of early disintegration eh? Probably the only clear area I'd pick the M41 (etc.) over my E07's is for braking on wet seal, is all. Of course, you've a sight more experience than me, so it might just all be in my head. I'd be interested to hear feedback on that.

I don't believe we can get the MT21 in a 19" to suit a Freewind (or Pegaso for that matter), sadly :( Any suggested combo other than an E09? (I have one that will need replacing soonish.)

I was told to run the front tyre back wards as it's more stable on the metal & gives better braking, was never came enough to try
but I was in a hurry one day & didn't have time to change the new set over so droped off the tyre's & had them fitted at the bike shop, was putting the front wheel back on the bike when I saw that it was on back wards, but was heading out with mrs S so thought I'd see how it went!!!
braking on the metal  shits load better & more stable wet roads the same, so now run them that way... on the seal in the dry back to dragging the pegs when in a hurry, in the wet not so low but still feel good

My picks are:
Mitas E07: Easy ADV rides, nothing too challenging, lots of gravel and long stints of tarmac. It has longevity and functionality pretty well sewn up, very nice on tarmac but has increased braking distances on gravel and is not generally a good performer in serious off road terrain, poor performer in wet/muddy/greasy conditions. I hardly use these nowadays, only ever for trips that clock up big tarmac K's and don't want to chew out my off road oriented tyres
http://www.cgs.eu/design/produkty/08-moto/e-07reard.jpg
Mitas E09: ADV rides with decent challenges mixed with gravel and tarmac. Fricken fantastic all round ADV tyre, great off road, great/stable/good braking distances on gravel, surprisingly smooth on tarmac with decent longevity
http://www.cgs.eu/design/produkty/08-moto/e-09reard.jpg
Mitas C02: Challenging gnarly ADV rides / off road oriented. This is what I currently use, brilliant off road, good braking distances and very controllable at high speed on gravel, a little squirmy on tarmac (primarily the first 15% of the tyre, then it settles down). Very off road capable and fun to ride tyre. Longevity is lower but acceptable

A bit over priced for the amount of k's that I'm getting, but will wait for the next generation & see if they're any better, as they did with the E10's

Have just clocked up 6195 k's on the MT21 front so thought I report back on how its performed on the 690.
Not being a member of the tire preservation society the poor old MT21 has not had an easy time over its 6195 klm life; so its fair to say its now pretty much done. I should also add that I think I checked the tire pressures on it at least once during its life...or at least I meant too :o .... and that 12 month WOF intervals are excellent for increasing the service life of a tire
As I'd hoped the MT21 was a solid performer on sand, gravel, dirt tracks and shingle river beds in both wet and dry conditions. I found the steering far more "positive" on these surfaces than with any of the previous dual sport tires I've tried (MT90, E07, Kenda 270) but this may be true of any Knobby by comparison though. Where it was less impressive was in mud and wet grass where I got stuck on number of occasions having steered into trouble...it had little grip on wet grass (but what does) and wanted to plough through mud (but then none of my previous tires would have faired any better).
The MT21 is the first knobby I've fitted on the front of the 690 and I was a little anxious about how much road handling I'd be surrendering to get better grip on the loose stuff. For me, the level of grip on sealed roads was the pressing question when going for a 20/80% dual sport tire. I mean those ratios can be a little frightening for the unlearned, for instance, are they saying its 80% no good on the road...yikes! As it turned out though the MT21 was more than happy cruising along at highway speeds albeit with some additional vibration through the bars -which may have been a problem for long haul expeditions but didn't worry me scooting around The Bay.
Cornering took a little getting used to on tar seal as it just didn't feel right leaning over a 160kg adventure bike into tight left handers with a virtual motorcross tire on the front wheel. I eventually overcame my anxiety of sliding under a truck and found the MT21 more than up to the job. I should point out at this stage that I'm no corner demon when it comes to lean angles; my tires end their life with tread much like a Spanish monk who has heaps of hair on the side of his head and none on the top as opposed to the Sholin monk who has no hair at all <_<.
Probably the main noticeable difference was felt just as you came to a stop with the front brake on- you felt a juddering through the front end which I assume was down to the space between the knobs - once rolling though all was sweet. One curiosity was the wear pattern on the centre of the tire. The MT21 has 2 knobs side by side with a single knob between them; the double knobs wore completely off while the single knob looks like its good for another 6000K? Maybe down to tire pressures I think...18psi is maybe too low for road use <_<
Probably the best endorsement you can give a tire is to order another one of the same; suffice it to say I will be ordering another MT21 front from Cycle treads this week....and it so happens they are on special again for $88.00 :headbang:

Good, they are back in stock. They were waiting on more last time I looked (and I need another now). Because they are a non directional tyre, its good to spin them around every now & then, to even wear on the tread blocks. I use them all the time on Gus. Cheap, good grip on seal, not bad off road.

I've just bought another pair of new t63's for the dr650.
Cycle treads have these on offer for a bit less than most others of this type, (80 / 20), so that's usually good enough reason for me -cheapskate!
I really rate these on the dr as they allow me to do a few organised trail rides whilst the rear is reasonably fresh, and its always good to embarrass the serious mx guys by cruising past on the long flat sections with the indicators on!:motu: Love the road gearing, whilst they're tapped out in top and I'm just hooking into 5th:nya:
Anyway, I get about 3000kms of pretty hard use from a rear and another 1500 to 2000 from the front.
Just checking in and sharing, springs coming....

I wore Mefo Explorers on my DRZ400 from UK to Tajikistan, this was 13000kms. Was expecting more but they were badly squared from the hot desert roads in Iran and Turkey, but enough chunck for the 10% off road or shit road that I rode.
The front lasted 16000kms, with plenty left on it, probably due to the weight of the luggage meaning the front wheel barely touched the ground.
These are similar treads to K60 Heidenaus.
The overlanders on bigger bikes I met, especially F800GS's, Africa Twins etc did really well on Mitas and Heidenau, and very badly on TCKs.

For the big bikes, the popular combo is a TKC front and K60 rear. Don't expect to be going anywhere you want in mud/clay etc. K60 doesn't like with it's solid centre strip (in 150).

TKC has a soft carcass. Always advise the heavy bikes not to air down too far, as you're going to risk the rims.

If anyone wants some tires cheap, my old man has loads of brand new dual purpose tires. They arent the best but $20 each. So you can't do complain too much haha. Unbranded chinese tires, 17s and 19s. They aren't road legal but look legit. Would take a knowledgeable officer to even know they didn't have the stamp of approval lol

Sounds good but.....
1. If I have an accident and cause harm, who is at fault if I am using non DOT approved tyres?
when the cops attend and investigate.
2. If I hurt myself, the same answer I presume? Fu...ed! :gob:
3. If the bike is damaged as a result, Insurance claim is goodnight nurse....same answer as above, Fu....ed!

Yep, they’re cheap and nasty alright. A bit narrow also so they almost counter the effect of the 21 inch front, and make the DR turn in like a sports bike (almost). Dig through the gravel instead of sitting on top like the cool looking fat stone spitters.
That’s cool. You can pay $180+ for a tyre. :scooter: I won’t.

back to tyres, just got a shinko 700 510/17 . Wider than the one i got on there now as it digs in and grips too well and won't slide much and seems perfectly in control so got the wider one in the hope those problems go away. Might last longer too cos the first one is wearing pretty fast for a roady tyre, bout the same as a dot knobby.
Also got a Kenda big block K784. Anyone ried one? Might be my Dustybutt tyre.

Am running a Front on 950
The Big Block is a more aggressive and softer tire than the TKC80, it has good cornering grip on the road in the dry but moves around a bit under load (front is easily lockable under brakes:wacko:) Excellent grip on loose stuff (even sand) and will probable last about same as Chris's rear in my application
Not sure if will use again as to viby and unstable for a big bike, (would consider on 650 or 750 though as low cost with ample grip, and considering my DR runs Kenda Trackmasters:shit:)

I have an MT21 on the rear of the DR. It has around 4500 km on it and I figured I should get about another 1000. but this week was the second puncture in 2 weeks and it looks like a perished tube rather than a tyre fault. So a new set of MT21s have just been ordered.
Overall I have been pleased with the tyre. It gives good grip in a wide range of conditions, and the knobs show no sign of any abnormal damage other than wear. The DR is used for light adventure riding and general commuting to work.
I should add that I fitted a Kenda to the front abot 1000 km ago, and I have never had a worse tyre in my life. It was so far out of balance that it took 3 x 25g wheel weights to get the balance anywhere near correct, and just feels horrible to ride on. If anyone wants a near new Kenda (3.00 x 21) they can have it.

That looks like a pile of Pirelli MT60's, stock fitment from the factory for Honda NXR125 (or XR125 Duster).
Most buyers are farmers who chuck on knobblies instead.
Fronts = 90/90-19

Ok for smaller bikes, bit skinny for most mid range adventure bikes tho.
Still a good score for someone local who wants to split them and on-sell what they don't need :niceone:

I've twice used Pirelli MT60 110/90-17 on the back of the KLR and they have performed pretty well. Obviously crap in mud but dryish dirt, gravel etc they do all right. Wear rate is not too bad even with a few days worth of camping gear on the back.

I got an MT90 on the front of the TDM mis matched with a Shinko 705 rear. The Pirelli runs out of profile before the Shinko but has never let go, unlike the Shinko. No chicken strips on the front.. On wet seal the rear is relatively easily provoked, the front sticks like poo to the blanket, I practice emergency braking in the rain.. I know this to be true. MT90 on gravel is predictable & scrabbles for grip longer than I anticipate, it consistently exceeds my expectations on wet clay & gravel tracks up here, through corners & on the brakes, the Shinko does what the throttle tells it. Should really try a matching pair, i love the front.

I’m running one at the moment. Narrow profile makes up for the lack of knobs, as it digs through the gravel to the hard stuff. Makes the bike turn in quick on seal also. Don’t think I’d want to run a wide profile one of these though.
The MT60 probably lasts a little longer than the ’crap shit turds’ but there’s not much in it.

Nay lad, very happy with it. But it's a compromise tire, won't grip like a sports tourer on wet roads & won't grip like a knobby off em. What it does do very well is tell you when to stop leaning or twisting the throttle, politely & before it takes the huff. The Pirelli is a more expensive brand, high silica compound, different tread pattern & will be shagged at the same time as the 705. For me it's a good combination, be a very good combination if they had matching profiles. Poor shinko has chicken strips, the front don't. The odd twitch on wet road paint, diesel or that shiny stuff is totally forgivable, my bike has a weight problem & a lorra torque. I reckon if I had an MT90 rear it would need replacing now, the shinko just looks middle aged, bulging at the edges but worn on top.

I used to get 10K + from the AT90 fronts on my 990 and 6-7k from the rears and I'm not kind on tires. They are an 80/20tire (80% road 20% off road) so pretty good for what your looking for...and cycle treads has them on special which is handy.

Would vouch for MT90's as exceptional road biased trail tires, my mileages are about the same, am stretching my 3rd rear to the carcase to try get 7k now, they can go another 2 or three if you stay off the metal though and would expect you get a lot more on something less aggressive than RC8 engined bike

I'm threemendously happy with the 704's on the wee DT. Rode tarseal, wet & dry, deep pea gravel, wet & dry clay and single track mish mash yesterday. They never set a foot wrong.
I was on the TDM with 705 rear, almost as drama free but the wet clay & mish mash had me being very gentle on the throttle. The TDM diid very well in the deep gravel, going exacary where I wanted it to with the gas on & ploughed gravel out the way with the front without throttle going exacary where I did not want it to.

Mitas E07 a bit pricy now, enough to look at alternatives for the Transalps next tyre set.

Front has been on for about 4000kms and looks like brand new. My first rear which was a 460 and too skinny was replaced at about that 4000km mark with a 510 so should last longer.(1)
(1) I haven't found a rear tyre yet that will last longer than 3500 to 4000kms.

I liked the Pirelli MT21 on the front & loved the Mitas E09 on the rear of my Serow.
I'm defiantly going to put the Mitas E09 (loves the mud) on the DR650 when its due for tyres.
Got some cheap shinko R244's on the DR650 at the moment. They took awhile to bed in, slippery as initially (Scary moments:gob:). I've only used them on gravel & road so far but are they ok. They handled the trip to the Brass no problem. Yet to test them off road.
My Father in law is an ex bike cop from the old days :Police: , when they had their own wrench monkey. He used to love getting new tyres on the bike, because the mechanic would used a hard buffing disk on a grinder to take off the shine on the front tyre, and let the cops do a standing burnout leaning it over from, peg to peg, out the back:cool:. To remove the dangerous outer layer of rubber. :innocent:. He said it made a huge difference to new treads on the tight corners and crazy chambers on the Auckland streets.

Quick question. Expected mileage from a shinko 704? It's the rear on the DT 230. Probably ridden 50/50 gravel & tar seal and not overly enthusiastically.
The tire is over half worn and my best guess is that it has travelled not a lot more than 1500 km.
It's the middle 2/3s that are nearly poked which leads me to think we are not trying hard enough.
I'm not fazed, it's a cheap(ish) tire but more taken aback at how quickly it's smoothing.

how much longer can I expect a t63 to last than a kenda 270 on back of my 12 wr450(it's 1/3 more expensive ,,,must last longer)P.S bike has one of those light switch throttles!!
Trying to decide on what tyres to run for trip to do dusty butt next year=1000km tarseal>1000km of db1 >1000km home ...am I being optimistic to try do it on one set of tyres....maybe I should try e07's??

I shagged an AC10/S12 combo just doing the DB part from ChCh. I'm sure the E07 would do the miles but if you want to do the Challenge sections, which I would highly recommend if your on a 450, then the least knobbly I would suggest would be an E09. I spoke with a 950super enduro rider last time who thought E09 insufficient for the task and was wearing C02s (full MX/enduro style knobblie). He had travelled from the NI to do the Rally but I do not know if the whole trip was done on a single set of C02. Of the 4 super enduro I saw I understand just 1 completed all the challenge sections. It is surely an impressive effort to get any big twin over the Awakino but probably top marks go to the riders of the 1150GS Rallaye and of the V-Strom who made it over the top!
Very we'll done!
I'll shall try the same this year if my Elefant is ready in time....

Rear E07 at 16-18psi (rim lock) would be sweet for all the challenge sections.
Pair it with a Pirelli MT21 at 18psi on the front (no rim lock needed).
If it's not wet, then 705's would even be fine...

I'm doing the dusty next year on my 650 v strom and will be using conti tck80 front and rear. I doubt I will do the Awakino challenge as I don't think the v strom rims will not cope to well. MT90's NO 3 & 4
Some Stats, For No3, Top speed on Beach 209kph, Solo speed 150kph (front wheel in air)
Totals ks so for 3x near bald tires 22.000
No2 top speed record on gravel 175kph (wont try that again, no thanks)
No1 longest 1day ks, 650 (enough for an old fellas backside)
IMHO best tire for putting down 100+Hp with excellent road grip wet or dry and good gravel grip if tire pressures are lower (no good in real soft or wet stuff but hey you cant have everything and a 220kg bike shouldn't be there anyway)

At this stage the grip has gone and I struggle to get on the beach.
I find at about 22psi metal grip is ok, a more aggressive tire would be torn to shreds by the 950 on the metal if you want to have fun and they need the 210kph speed rating to be safe on the road. a lessor tire would melt :pinch:
The DR750 at 50ish Hp can get away with Kenda 760 Trackmasters and the grip is huge on the metal (if not a bit less exiting)

Not sure of your steed but I has an 110 MT90 A/T on the front & a 150 705 rear on the TDM. The profiles don't match. No chicken strips on the front but bigguns on the Shinko. 705 has lasted well considering the range of riding it has had, squaring off now after at a guess 7000'k, more or less. Used with enthusiasm in the swervery, two up mid summer touring & some lairy, arse in the breeze gravel. Looks like they will be knackered together.
Can't fault the tire on value but it does not like diesel, painted road markings or shiny patches in the rain. Otherwise bloody good. Even getting on the gas right in the torque & cranked over in an off camber corner the TDM does not bother it.
