Think I'll do the same as last week , go out tonight and enjoy a nice warm evening, and a beer. Ha its a 4 day week for most of us anyway :shifty: tues is half way. weather doesn't look that great for tomorrow evening.Got a man coming out to do some welding on my bike tonight around 5... if that falls through, might buzz on over with roadkill about 7ish.

So regardless of the weather, where to this week boys and girls?
Anyone got any preferences? Otherwise we'll just decide at the car park.
We really can't catch a break with the weather, can we?!

can 7ish, fucking meeting wont end untill closer to 8
anyone keen to go 8ish? me and mikkel are thinking a shorter ride? it'd just be a shame to waste such a nice evening, no matter how short it was.

Been waiting a week now for it to arrive (and NOW the shop says they dont have a clue WHEN it may pop in), and I'm SICK of leaning my lovely bike up against a tree, shes starting to think no-one likes her cos she always separated from everyone else :(

Very much doubt it'll be as rubbish as it was last week that's for sure. That sort of weather (thunder, lightning, hail) happens very infrequently here - maybe only once a year. Maybe you'll get a few spots of drizzle but nothing major and it won't be cold like last week was.
You'll do fine. :) I'd come along and keep you company as well (can keep up with Phoenix - for now!), but I'll be away from Christchurch for a few days. Next week though I'll be there with bells on

whoa
just got back.
me and mikkel went from the bog in town, out to halswell, taitap, gebs, up dyers pass, then along the summit road and down mt plesant something.
sat at mikkels and listened to music, had a beer and talked about electromagnetics, quantim mechanics, and how guitar pulls chicks.
we got plenty bug splattered

30th October 2007, 23:05
Yeah, got my nice new gear all spray painted with bug guts... Yummy, won't have to go shopping for meat for tomorrows dinner.
Nice ride, although I must admit riding in the twillight is sorta freakish since you can't see what stuff might be on the road - pebbles, marbles, leaves, very small churches, oilspills, etc.
I count on being there tomorrow for a good trip around the greater Chch area. Let's just hope for good weather then.
P.s. Dave, we were talking about how guitars does NOT pull chicks. Do remember and do keep on rocking anyway! ;)

Nice ride and good to see some more new faces.
We had the "pleasure" of ridding this world of a wide assortment of bugs, moths and other wee flying creeps. Always nice to have en excuse for polishing the helmet when you get home...
Went over Gebbies pass as the twilight was starting to sneak in - and the sky was really beautiful. Riding in the twilight is quite daunting though since you can not see nearly as well as when it's completely dark.
Thought my front brake was a bit sluggish on the way home - when I got home I found out that I had snapped one of the bolts holding it onto the handlebars... Guess I gotta fix that soonish :(

well, that was a good ride. Me and the guy on the old yamaha (fuck, I forgot your name again) turned off at motukarara, and went via there to Lincoln, then to Leeston, and then took some windy roads to end up at SH1. Through Dunsandel, rolly, then back to chch and home. Awesome ride.
Next wednesday, let's go somewhere that's not hills. Somewhere that has nice corners and is fun.

Next wednesday, let's go somewhere that's not hills. Somewhere that has nice corners and is fun.No hills AND nice corners, in Canterbury, yeah right. Flat and straight or hilly and windy - take your pick. Mind you I suppose there's a flat windy bit from The Black Tulip (or whatever it's called now) to Little River.
I should be able able to make it along next week too. I normally have something else on on Weds nights but next week I'm free.

Indeed, only road on my maps that resembles flat and curvy would be Tai tapu to Little river. All other flat roads are more like 80 or 90 percent straight for bugger all bends.
Even whipping out to the Ashley gorge is like 90 percent straight.

What a beautiful night, the sunset as we came through Gebbies was fantastic, the additional Kms uNople and I took allowed me to open out the bike to the point where on the way home I realised the speedo now reads 60Km/h as soon as it gets moving oh well now I have to spend a bit more money on the old beast.
Such a good route that we took going through Sumner over to Lyttelton, would be nice to take a northern route some time if we can think up a good trip.
Depending on how the weekend looks weather wise might head out through Rangiora and through the back to Oxford and through to Darfield if anyone is interested.

A trip up to the Hurunui Pub (http://www.wises.co.nz/d/33/Canterbury/Rangiora/RANGIORA/Canterbury/Hawarden/Hurunui/) for a coke would not be a bad run. Just for a there and back, only 60k's from Rangi' but ya gotta add some from Chch, maybe a bit long legged until the Sun settin later.

yep.... one of me favorites. If we left promptly from BK at 6:30pm and didn't break any speed limits by more than 10km/hr even on the straights, and didn't back off for most bends, and it was a nice clear or even better moonlit night then wed be home about 2:30 or 3am?

Very nice ride last night guys. Had a few oops moments but I think I know why I got them and hopefully it wont happen again (The old grey matter wasnt working properly). Thankfully there was no traffic coming the other way.
Must have killed about 40 moths along old Tai Tap road. I tried to take a fair chunk out of the moth population so you guys behind me wouldnt have to but apparently I failed ;) It was good fun though never the less.
A north bound ride would be fun and I reckon a longer ride could be on the cards shortly as the days are getting much longer. Also with the roads to the north well lit at night we could probably go for a longer ride in search of twisties up that way.
Depending on how the weekend looks weather wise might head out through Rangiora and through the back to Oxford and through to Darfield if anyone is interested.
What time and what day are you planning on doing this?
I would be keen for a Sunday ride.

With the light staying for longer a longer ride could be on the cards. Would be nice to keep the group together as it is a Cruizy ride intended to cater for newbies. As it works out anyways we do have a fast group, a med group, and me and I dont mind spending less time at a pub to catch up time if need be. However if there were other newbies we would cater for them to, which might mean a shorter route.
I guess what I'm saying is its not going to be easy to make a route decision untill everyone that is going is at the carpark

Agreed. We'd be happy to hang around with the noobies on a shorter ride as the longer mid-week ones don't really suit us at the moment. And now that we have our full compliment of bikes back on the road and the family is recovering from illness we might even be able to get out with you guys.
Actually it's not even necessarily a split between noobies and experienced riders. It's probably just those who want a short ride and those who want a longer one regardless of experience.

I still feel sad when I think of the EL all naked and devoid of all its bits. It was a great bike to get my confidence back up and eager to be on the road again and I became quite attached to it over the short 4 months that I had it. The Jade is a nice ride, possibly nicer than the EL but it is not quite the same. Can't wait to get out there for a decent ride on a nice night. It's just a case of catering for whoever turns up on the night. Theres no point in going for an "easy" ride if theres no newbies, but on the other hand, if there are newbies we gotta look after them. Maybe on those nights we can split with 2 route options to keep everyone happy

Im the Katana rider (Alex). Good to hear that you enjoyed the ride. It was a bloody good night if you ask me.
I wont be able to make a Weekend ride as I have to much on the go and on Monday I leave for a road trip on the bike around the South Island. Bring on the West Coast and Lake Brunner :Punk::Punk::Punk: 8 days of riding around this beautiful island of ours with no desitination in mind cept for Lake Brunner next weekend on the 10th and 11th.
Just have to pick up a few bits and peices and bleed the rear brakes and Im good to go for Monday morning.
As for splitting the ride, I dont think its a good idea. At the moment we have a good bunch of people going out each week and everyone gets along? and is pretty friendly with each other. I think if we split up into a fast and slow group then there will just be two rides on a Wednesday night and both groups will end up suffering for it.
I have no problems slowing down and looking after the newbies, Ive done it before and I'll do it again happily. And it might be good for me to slow down a bit to as I had a few oops moments the other night :o

As to what's up this weekend for me I think I will be a bit quite, unfortunately now waiting for the speedo to turn up from Auckland, they were going to try for Saturday delivery, I will have to wait and see tomorrow if it turns up and I can get it fitted.
I would love to look at a nice cruisy ride, but will have to wait and see.

Well then I guess that also, for me, presents the question of how long a ride you want. If you are just getting home by 4pm, must have been out awhile. I wouldn't want to be out for ages. The time between 3pm Sunday and 3pm Monday is my weekend for this week.

If fine Sunday may get out in the late afternoon for a ride.
As for the Wednesday night rides- I think keep it for the Newbies and have it cruisy. That is why it was started and seems to be going well-although i have only been able to go once so far.It is just a matter of finding some nice places to ride to.Some twisties would be nice but we only have the hills for that and it does get boring doing the same run all the time.
And after watching some of the so called newbies on the ride to Diamond Harbour in the wet- i think everyone rode very well and all seemed confident,i was suprised to see everyone going so well.Good on you all for riding safe and having a good time.I hope i can get out for more rides with the group as long as work doesnt get in the way.

it just sounds like all these people are wantin to break off and do there own thing cuz of all these so called newbies.... i think it shouldnt matter if they come along for a ride, and i dont think we should be lookin for easy routes etc for them if we go for the harder ones we just need to make sure that they take it easy, the guys that wanna race ahead can do so, i dont get why they are saying they want to do a different ride becuz of this?? u know what i mean? becuz we have newbies on the ride, ( i dont agree they should even be called that) it shouldnt matter to the people that wanna race ahead, it's not like the newbies are gonna slow them down...???? makes no sense?

First Ride: Wednesday 3rd October. Meet at the Burger King carpark on Moorhouse Ave at 6pm for a 6.30 departure.
Coming from Wellington I "grew up" on "the cruisy wednesday night ride". See thread here. (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=747823&postcount=1)
Deviant Esq and I thought it would be good to start up a similar ride down here.
The ride is designed to provide a social event and chance for the less experienced of us to learn from those with more experience. It is a "cruisy" ride and not a race from one point to another. Anyone is welcome to come along.
I learnt pretty much everything I know about riding from the crew in Wellington on the cruisy Wednesday night rides. Now is my chance to give some back. Besides, it will be a fun event, probably generally ending at a pub.
Now, I'm a newbie in Christchurch, so I'll be relying on others to come up with routes on the nights and a meeting place.
The only other thing that needs to be decided on is which night of the week to do it. I found it was a good "break" to the working week, so Tues, Weds or Thurs would be the choices.
Anyway, I just wanted to guage the interest so post away if you would be interested.
This is what it is about - a CRUISY RIDE.

The last ride to Akaroa i did with a group we had a FXR along and the wind slowed him down quite a bit,he enjoyed the ride but wished he had a bit more power to keep up with the group. You can only try.
It all depends on who is organising the ride, what bikes are going and wether suitable for all styles of bikes or not.

We could go into scientific explanations like speed*time=distance and over shorter distances the time it takes for two vehicles to travel the same distance at different speeds is seemingly short however that would be long winded.
It is more fun to say well it makes the cruisy rides all the better :)

Shhhh quiet you. If you start yelling that around we'll have them ban speeding soon ;) Oh, yeah they already did and this is partly the reason why.
(If you go twice as fast obviously it'll take half as long to drive the same distance - if you go 50% faster it'll take you 66% of the initial time - etc. If you're riding hard but "roughly inside" the speed limits you might gain 10 km/h on average on the guy who cruises and if the average was 90 km/h already it's not gonna do a lot of difference.) Only justification for speed is that it's fun and that it's not nearly as dangerous as its been made out to be.
Good to meet you Craig, I'm Mikkel on the bike you know better than myself. Hope to see you wednesday.

Thanks for yet another great night out! Good to meet some new people and get to know some of the ones that've been around before a little better. Nice to make it all the way to Diamond Harbour and back without being subjected to a) being pelted with hail b) being soaked by rain and c) chilled by high winds.
Nice photos - and good to see you didn't managed to hurt yourself too badly Q.
Had my first *blink* "phew, I'm still here" experience tonight. Front wheel sliding outwards on a small rock while leaned over around a curve...
As I mentioned to some during this ride I might not be able to make wednesdays in the future since the sailing season is starting out. If anyone are keen on having a look at doing a ride other nights than wednesday around Chch please do send me a PM and we can have a chat about it. :)

happy to help out if you want, but for now heres some off the cuff info
1- sounds like you are leaning the bike to far and need to move on the bike, also when cornering the foot on that side should be on the balls/toes of your foot.
2- should just be a cable, try parrets for a new inner cable they are on StAsaph st by Fitzgerald.

Went for a bit of a blat this morning with Sparrow, good ride it was too... apart from all the fookin' cyclists!! :angry2: Far too many of them, and right in the middle of the road far too often. Anyway aside from those, great. Rode out through Sumner and up over the hill, down into Lyttleton, around the bays, turn left at Governors Bay, through that, past Teddington and on around to Diamond Harbour for a drink and yarn, then back over the hill - with a nice lack of traffic for a change! Was good not to have cars in the way, managed to touch the pegs down on a couple of occasions on account of getting the boot out of the way first! :2thumbsup

Phwoar! That fuel economy isn't the greatest, are the carbs still running a little rich? The fuel tank on the NZ is pretty durn small (9 litres before reserve, optimistically), but today when I filled it up the odo showed 232km - I hadn't switched to reserve yet. Only got 8 litres back in it too - that's almost 30km per litre. I suppose having a single cylinder 250 has its advantages ;)

Someone had "parked" a car on the Lyttleton side of Gebbie's Pass. Not in the middle of the road mind you - well in to the side, more or less OFF the road... and at an odd angle too :) Engine was still warm, but nobody there so I continued down the hill.

Ashley Gorge was pleasant. Enjoyed it enough that after we had lunch in Oxford we turned around and went back the same way except that we detoured to Amberley so we could stop at 'Brew Moon' for a beer. Mrs Oakie found the wee CB250 much easier to ride than her beloved Eliminator and it went really well on it's first decent trip in the country. We may be doing Hamner Springs next Friday/Saturday then it's the KB get together in 4 weeks. Woo hoo!

Well I guess I was being a bit of a snob (sorry) as I went for quick ride to Akaroa and back non stop early in the morning.
Clear roads and got though Little River both ways before any traffic built up because of the road blocks for some event at the Park. (Show Day?)
Because I was busy in the early afternoon it had to be quick and non stop.
So most of you were still in bed. (my excuse for being a snob)
I should of been still in bed after staying out late-ish at a joint 50th & 21st birthday party.
Next Saturday is out for me a we are going to catch up with friends at a dog show.

Nice and cruisy ride, not too much speeding or anything - focus was on smooth. I really enjoyed it and felt a good flow with the bike, which was running absolutely primo btw. :niceone:

Great ride guys, great weather too I might add.
Started out a bit ragged with guys lane splitting, that's no way to keep a group together but once out of town I settled in and then eventually I hate to say proceeded to break a lot of my own self imposed rules.
For me the ride wasn't very cruisy, then it was, then it wasn't and finally it was again.
We went out to Halswell and topped up the tanks then out Old Tai Tapu Rd and Gebbies Pass to the Wheatsheaf.
After a stop in there we followed the bays to Lyttelton and promptly just about run in to a car stopped in the middle of the road on a blind bend with yellow no stopping lines everywhere on Evans Pass.
Then down in to Sumner and toward Ferrymead with a small detour around Mc Cormacks Bay Rd and up Mt Pleasant way with more nice views on the way down to finish at the very expensive bar in Humphreys Drive.
I have checked some of the tape and looks like there's some good video on there, especially after the camera angle adjustment made at the Wheatsheaf.
I look forward to getting it on YouTube.
Cheers
TA.

...promptly just about run in to a car stopped in the middle of the road on a blind bend with yellow no stopping lines everywhere on Evans Pass.
That was absolute madness... almost thought we'd have a bit of biker imposed justice, all stop, get off, and go "have a word" with said complete plonker. I was honking around that corner doing about 70, and there's that bloody idiot in his home resprayed car right in my path... as he was for everyone following me. Lucky there wasn't something coming the other way or I'd have had nowhere to go! :sweatdrop
Other than that it was a good ride. Bloody expensive drinks at that pub at the end though, whatever the hell it was called...

"Cruisy" was well and truly lost from the title last night, but we had no newbies so I think everyone was ok. I have to admit I enjoyed myself
The beast is handling a bit better now. I just have to work on getting my confidence back up

I still rate myself as such... but yeah it was fun! ;)
And yeah that fucker in the car up towards Evans... *sigh*
I was so pissed off - coming around the corner as the first guy, swerving around the car and then just thinking "Nothing I can do to let the others know what they're coming up to!" Glad to see that everyone managed to get out of that ok!
And yeah, the Watershed is not exactly cheap(it is nice though). We might wanna have a look around for a cheaper bar.
And Transalper - the bar at Gebbie's is Wheatsheaf if you want the spelling :)

Glad you all made it around the idiot! There always seems to be some plonker in the wrong place around those hills.
The Sandbar in Ferrymead on ferry rd /settlers cres corner will be cheaper than the Watershed. Car park off settlers - It has nice food there too!

Not a worry - you only asked for that one ;) I wasn't trying to be pedantic...

Me I always cruise. Mind you last piece was up and coming. Yep the bar was a bit stiff. Over the road might be the answer.

Glad to hear you guys had a great ride last night.
I was unfortunatly working and couldnt make it anyway.
As for myself and my Katana we wont be doing any more Wednesday night rides untill my Stator coil is fixed.
It shat its pants between Omaru and Invercargill and as such my battery is not charging and I can only run the headlight for about 30 minutes before I get stranded (as I unfortunaly found out in Queenstown :()
Such is life though. If anyone knows anyone that is fimilar with a GSX750 engine that can point me in the right direction to getting it fixed please let me know (the stator is shorting to earth).
Cheers Guys.

Yes it lasted the trip... and no I didn't glue it in place!
But rest assured, single cylinder bikes doing what they do best (vibrate a lot), it's bound to shake itself loose again at some point. Ah well!

Yes I was told that "cruizy" left at Haswell (JWalker adn Tacoman may have had something to do with that!)
Upon asking Phoenix what sort of speed he was doing the reply was "I didnt look"..... not a good sign!
Oh well, will be along next week just to be the anchor in the group!

The windings should be standard between the Kat and a std 750 so obtaining a set should be easy, try the bloke on Tuam street. If you are handy with a spanner then you will have no worries fitting it, if not well one of us will be able to help you out

Sweet.
I was going to check out KN Engineering as last time that was where I got a coil from for my old GS250. I had a manual for the GS though.
With the GSX750, the manual I have skips right over the Stator coil and only says that its on the left side of the motor. Hence why I asked if anyone had any experience with one before.
Id rather avoid the bloke on Tuam street. I havnt delt with him before but only because Ive only heard that he's a bit of a rip off merchant (were talking about Japanese motorcycle spares here arnt we?)
Otherwise I'll just have to ride the pushie around at night. Wouldnt keep up with you guys though on a Wednesday night.

Worth a try he was able to provide me a spring I needed once, it does not matter where it comes from if you can get one.

As I said should be the same as a GSX one about the same years perhaps that manual if you can get references from that.

Yeah but as to a rip off well I just paid $300 for a speedo for my old beast from Auckland yet it would have cost me about half if he had one at the time :(.
