First Ride: Wednesday 3rd October. Meet at the Burger King carpark on Moorhouse Ave at 6pm for a 6.30 departure.

Coming from Wellington I "grew up" on "the cruisy wednesday night ride". See thread here. (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=747823&postcount=1)

Deviant Esq and I thought it would be good to start up a similar ride down here.

The ride is designed to provide a social event and chance for the less experienced of us to learn from those with more experience. It is a "cruisy" ride and not a race from one point to another. Anyone is welcome to come along.

I learnt pretty much everything I know about riding from the crew in Wellington on the cruisy Wednesday night rides. Now is my chance to give some back. Besides, it will be a fun event, probably generally ending at a pub.

Now, I'm a newbie in Christchurch, so I'll be relying on others to come up with routes on the nights and a meeting place.

The only other thing that needs to be decided on is which night of the week to do it. I found it was a good "break" to the working week, so Tues, Weds or Thurs would be the choices.

Anyway, I just wanted to guage the interest so post away if you would be interested.

Quite often do night rides to Akaroa, anything up to 5-6 rides a week. Pretty casual leaving times, usually just me and a couple of mates. Pace is whatever suits you.

Well thats a poor turn out by the CHCH crew Trist. Might have to sex it up a bit for the ladies?

Do you think I need to post pictures of my arse to stir up some interest?

Somehow I think it would probably have the opposite effect...

Might stir things you may not wish for. Hmm... a pic of a semi-nekid chick might go a long way. I can recommend Denise Richards, or even Shannon Elizabeth..

I'd be keen for a ride one night.

Could go to some really interesting places. Ever been over Gebbies Pass at night?

Its a good ride though it can be a bit scary and you can finish up at the Wheatshef? tavarn on the other side of the hill.

Give it a few weeks and we'll be well into the good weather I reckon. Warm clear nights that are generally perfect for riding in.

I was out last night for a ride. Sitting at 100km was just madness out on the plains, it was so foggy. It got to the point where I was just following the tail lights infront of me. I couldnt see shit as the visor kept misting up on the outside of it :(

Was a good ride though.

And what is worth watching can be easily downloaded from the internet and watched at your own leisure without ads.

I realise that, which makes it difficult to get the word out.

I figure I'll just set a day and a place and if I end up riding by myself because noone turns up, then it's going to be a quiet ride each week. I wasn't expecting an explosive start. We'll just see what happens

Tris thought that this would be a great way to get everyone out. Obviously Chch rides are not as social as Wellington ones....... (Come on prove me wrong)

So have we got a date and time set yet?

Im working early starts for the next few weeks so evening rides would be awesome for me.

If you and Deviant cant find anyone else and end up just riding by yourselves, definatly get Deviant to send me a txt (he has my number) so I can tag along.

A lot of the 'cliques' that I have ridden with stick to riding with each other because they ride at pace and there is an understanding between them. Probably part of the reason we have less bins down here, as there are no unknown riders to make an error of judgement, ie trying to keep up, show off, etc.

Anyway, I'm always up for a blast. Make a time and I'll see if I can make it.

Personally, I think thats a terrible attitude to have. I mean, fair enough, your own safety is important, but how are the new riders going to learn if they don't have the opportunity to ride with the more experienced riders?

I hope you do come along because I don't yet consider myself to be one of those experienced riders, or mentor material

onearmedbandit
22nd September 2007, 16:09
Yeah you are right, it is a bit of a stink attitude. But I suppose I'm only talking about the sports bike riders, the guys I ride with occassionally ride at a decent pace, it's not like they don't allow new riders to join in, it's normally that the new riders decide to go at their own pace.

I'll be there, if the time suits, without a doubt.

SDU

I guess some of us have time issues or other commitments (such as caring for animals, sports etc) that we can't always be so organised.
I would be keen from time to time but my problem is by the time I finish work the ride will be over or near enough to it.
Just post ride & times & you may find some takers.

fireliv

You dont have to come along every time. If you cant make it you cant make it, no pressure. Soemtimes we wont be able to make it either. But its about knowing that a group is going and that if you want to come you will be welcome. Its to encourage new riders to get out there and have a go at some of these roads and learn a thing or too.
If ure a cock on the road you wouldnt come anyways cos the pace will be to slow.

actually we are very social bunch, but we tend to go for weekend rides cos most of us work different hours and cant usually get out at 'normal' evening times as SDU said. Not to mention that quite a few of us race over winter at Ruapuna, better than riding on icy roads anyway. Besides haven't you noticed winter happening the last few months i.e. its dark early... we just go out for drinks instead and we have had a few over winter. But now spring has sprung and I managed to clock up 1300kms last weekend, so I guess an evening ride is a possiblity, altho still waiting for a when and where

it aint a terrible attitude to have when you have almost been wiped out by an inexperienced rider being a cock. I dont have a problem with new riders, but I will give them plenty of room and I expect the same back. We usually have a few newbies along on a ride and they pretty much mingle fine, and usually appreciate being able to follow the more learned fellows around them... and I dont really count me in that bunch, I'm still learning all the time

CHCH group is like the exclusive brethren sometimes.. beware! :D

I've found they are like there here as well. And out of some of the groups that I have had a chance to tag along with, their pace is what I'd consider borderline asking for an immediate death.

But thats why I'm in CK now. Nice pace, nice rides. Take turns making up rides, person who made up ride leads the way.. nobody gets left behind, even if the leader has to slow down a bit (or speed up)

CK rides are open to public, usually Saturdays. And I am free during the weekdays at different times depending on the week (either morning between 9 and noon, or 4pm and 7pm)

Sorry Phoenix, meant to be the first to reply to your thread, but you know what they say about the best laid plans! Ah well, better late than never eh? I know what you mean about there being very little interest - definitely slim pickings - but as I said, I expected nothing less out of the Christchurch crew - good for nothing layabouts!! :Pokey: :bleh:

Anyway, I'll definitely be a starter for the first ride, on Wednesday 3rd October, around 6 to 6.30pm, maybe at BK Moorhouse? Most people know where that is. Anyway, probably start meeting at 6, head off at 6.30, don't be late or we'll leave you behind! Not likely, since, as Phoenix has said, the idea is for it to be a cruisy ride. No doubt sometimes we'll feel like being a bit more brisk, but we'll guage how we feel on each night, and cater for everyone who turns up no matter what. :)

Bring on daylight savings! Looking forward to it :niceone:

I suppose we're going to have to find a nice stable person to take the lead, one who will set a good but still newbie friendly pace, and who knows the way... but I guess we'll cover that one on the night depending on who turns up, might not have any newbies (except me of course ;))!

Nothing concrete as of yet... though I haven't talked to Phoenix about it much either. I have a couple in mind that could be options though - top of my list would be to head out to Cashmere Road / Hoon Hay Valley Road in Westmorland / Kennedys Bush as it's nice and quiet, barely any traffic at all, especially on a weekday, heaps of places to pull over and have a chat, plenty of interesting corners to keep the sportsbikers interested, not too far from town and not too long a ride. Read: Newbie friendly. The only downside is that it doesn't end at a pub, so we'd have to go find one!!

Phoenix: Want to come scope it out beforehand?

I really don't know many routes. I've only ever been over the Port Hills and to Akaroa, so this is going to be a good chance for me to discover new roads.

General consensus on the night usually works pretty well but it's good to have a few routes in mind

There are plenty of routes to take around CHCH if it is a newbie ride, not just around the outskirts of town. When the ride is finished you should find a regular pub to go to and talk over what ever you need to about bikes and riding style.Pubs dont interest me as im a non drinker but would be keen to go on some rides at times.

Good idea mate. Anyone know of a good place to go, that isn't too busy? Preferably somewhere that isn't very noisy as well, give us a chance to talk over the ride, and answer any questions people might have. I suppose it would help if they serve beer / alcohol, for those who want to partake, but as you say, probably not essential as those who want to can always bugger off for a drink afterwards ;)

I reckon a club would be a pretty good place - usually not too busy, not too loud, you can hear the conversation... and they serve booze as well! Does the Cashmere club have a door charge / members only? Sit outside over a beer discussing the ride or whatever. Thoughts?

What sort of routes are you thinking of BUSA? Hopefully we'll be able to explore them all at some stage, figure out which ones we like the best, which have the least / most inobtrusive traffic, nicest curves etc. I don't know nearly as many nice riding roads as I should, especially newbie friendly ones close to town, so I'd hope to improve my knowledge of roads through these rides too :)

Phoenix: Had a chat with the shop about my bike - still awaiting parts, so I still don't know how long it'll be before it's back together again. <_<

Yeah, quiet is good so I guess the story is not to go anywhere too popular or pick somewhere with a good outside area. As an alternative, there are a few licenced coffee shops around. The beer's not exactly cheap but I'm sure no-one would think of having more than a couple before riding home anyway ... would they. :nono:

I'm not sure about places like the Cashmere Club. I think some welcome casual diners but they are probably a 'Right Of Admission Reserved' place and they might just freak out if they see a dozen or so 'bikies' turning up at their door.

I dont have any prefered routes that I can think of that would be to newbie friendly after 6 once the sun starts going down. I'd like to shoot over Gebbies pass though and come back through the tunnel.

For a nice quiet pub to end up at, we could go to The Twisted Hop which is just down from the bus exchange, on Poplar Street.

Its got good off streetish parking (read its not a major road, and gets next to no traffic and has some motorcycle parking outside the Vespa bar across the road), is quiet, and if you guys dont like the beer, you can choose from 3 other quiet bars all within 10 meters (some German bar, The Vespa bar, and Red Jacks).

This is why we've set it up to start after daylight savings begins - the sun will be setting coming up to 7.30 by the time we do the first couple of weeks, and getting later as we carry on in the year. I don't think we'll do Gebbies Pass right away as people tend to want to hurry through there (and therefore less newbie friendly. Challenging for a newbie too)... but the Wheatsheaf is a good place to sit outside and talk about the ride... even if I'm not too keen on their beer (DB on tap <_<).

Just my personal opinion, but if it's the place I remember, I don't like the twisted hop. They brew their own beer (which I don't like much), and charge accordingly - it isn't cheap, if it's the place I remember.

If the Cashmere Club isn't much of an option, what's another club people like using? Something fairly central would be best IMO, so noone has to ride too far to get home afterwards... coz they'll be tired, not coz they're drunk :nono:

Yea, I can understand that, their beer sure isnt for everyone thats for sure.

Any pub that has plenty of off street parking should be the go I reckon. Every pub will be pretty quiet at that time of the week.

Hey D. Yeah, the stuff that needed doing due to my wee off was all sussed, bar the rear plastics which I must get around to doing. But the fork seals were about had-it too, so I took it in to Linton at Dirt Action to get them done. He ordered the bits for it and when they showed up I took it back in. Couple of days later he phoned me saying the fork internals (I don't know too much about them, but I gather they're bushings and some inner seals) where absolutely shagged, totally worn out and unusable, and needed replacing too... so he's had to order those parts in as well. Still waiting on those parts so the forks can be put back together and get me back on the road! Fingers crossed it's sooner rather than later.

Didn't really want to spend the extra money, as I'll be selling the bike before too long and upgrading, but I don't really have much choice if I actually want to sell the bike. So I'm taking it on the chin and spending the money to have it right. :)

We're hoping to make this into a weekly thing I have an idea for you mate... that is if you dont consider me unhelpfull :apint:

I took it in to Linton at Dirt Action

well thats a cock up on your behalf... he knows his shit, but a NZ250 aint exactly the 'shit' what Im saying DE is that he will take 3 months to do them and they will be in as good a condition as new, but you dont need that on a NZ... he does performance work.

No, it's not a cock up on my behalf. I asked three different people who I should take the NZ to, to get the fork seals done, and his name came up every time. Yet I'm supposed to take it somewhere else because it isn't worth it?? I know my bike isn't "the shit", you're good at reminding me of that. Linton's been excellent, great service and communication, and it isn't his fault that bloody everything on the NZ is unique and difficult to find. I'm glad I took it to him, I know he'll do it right.

it aint a terrible attitude to have when you have almost been wiped out by an inexperienced rider being a cock.Yep, or they don't ride at their own pace and fall off. I'd much rather they mooch round the back of the group with me a few times than take off after the others, wrecking my ride and wasting my time when they bin. Doesn't happen much cause we mostly stick to ourselves.

BK sounds good to me. I can get a feed before I go, and I can actually find BK in town unlike everywhere else that isnt motorcycle related :rolleyes:Eat afterwards, makes it easier for the surgeons should the worst eventuate.

hadn't notice dangerous disparaging your ride in any post... From what i've read he's saying your bike is not the 'top of the line' racebike and prob doesn't need 'top of the line' forks. Horses for courses... as they say.

And as for not being invited, it takes 2. Havn't noticed any PMs or texts to Dangerous to say "are you out for a ride today?"
usually its like this... On the phone to mate "ooo nice day, done the chores, shall we go for a blat in 30 mins?"
Should we then text everyone in our phonebook as say the same? get kinda expensive...

oh and Dangerous is belligerant with everyone, you aint being singled out ;)

I would text you or dangerous if I had either of your cellphone numbers. I once asked for yours, and you said something about someone else texting me if you were going for a ride, and didn't give it to me. That, and as I mentioned earlier, I didn't want to be inviting myself.

If it's like "ooo let's go for a blat in 30 minutes", I figured a PM won't be any use, because you / dangerous won't get it until it's too late anyway.

This is getting silly and off topic. But if you guys don't want me to ride with you, just say so. If that's not the case, then I'm sure we'll work something out in terms of contact.

Nope. not really. Both major carriers have txting plans, and most modern phones let you send the same txt to multiple people, and most modern phones you can group certain people in a list.

Anyone who wants to go on rides without the fuss and bother of of trying to squeeze their way into someone elses social group can just contact me. CK members bring friends aplenty on non-cruiser bikes. You will have to put up with a.. uh.. rather cruisey ride though.

Well the great thing about these rides is they are regular. We will meet at the same time and the same place every week. No need to worry about all that. Everyone is welcome and everyone knows the ride will be on, so if they want to come they can just turn up.

Relax people. These rides are going to be good (hopefully)

Deviant Esq
28th September 2007, 09:20
Well Phoenix and Deviant have gone to take a look at some of the routes.
...and I rode fireliv's Bandit.

Thoughts (with reference to riding the NZ): Hmm... so this is what it's like to ride a bike that actually has brakes?! By comparison, the NZ might as well have brake pads made of cheese. The first time I grabbed the brake lever (on the Bandit) it had more bite than I expected, it surprised me. After that, however, I was able to use it with confidence, more confidence than on the NZ even after having ridden it for nearly two years.

I also felt that the motor was much nicer, too. Sure, water cooled, inline four, compared to an air cooled single, it ought to be, but I liked it. Probably only a nose faster than the NZ, but much smoother and more pull higher in the rev range... it just felt more effortless too.

The riding position didn't suit me much though. Relatively low seat, and high pegs that were too far forward to get comfortable. Wearing my zip together leathers it was difficult getting my feet back on the pegs after pulling away from an intersection, and didn't get any more comfortable once on the move. Indeed, after checking out a 10 minute section of road I needed to stop and stretch my legs already. This would suit a shorter rider... or at least less restrictive leathers.

Overall though, nice bike to ride, thanks Liv! Pity the NZ's being fixed...

Anyway, we suspect there won't be many (if any) learners coming on this, the first Cruisy Wednesday Night Right (Christchurch chapter ;)), so we reckon out through Halswell, down old Tai Tapu Road (past Rossendale), out thru Motukarara, over Gebbies Pass, maybe stop for a leak (and let others catch up, though this is definitely a cruise, no hurry) at the Wheatsheaf, then back into town, maybe choose a pub to meet at. You can choose whether you want to take Dyers Pass Road over the hill, or around the bays and through the tunnel, we'll see you back in town either way.

Thoughts?

As has been said there are heaps of options around here I can come up with some suggestions depending on what everyone is after, Gebbies Pass sounds good but getting there is a tad boring, unless you want to head past PMH into Hoonhay valley around the back of Halswell, and onto old Tai Tapu Rd, or for a variation you can zap down Sabys Rd, Trices Rd, Ellesmare Rd either turn here onto Lincoln - Tai Tapu Rd to Tai Tapu and onto Christchurch - Akaroa Rd or continue on through Greenpark to Ridge Rd and into the back of Motukarara and onto Christchurch - Akaroa road then over Gebbies Pass.

Just some suggestions, sure it will take a bit longer and perhaps these are ideas that can be used in later rides.

Hey man. The meeting place is Burger King carpark, Moorhouse Ave, Wednesday 3 October, at 6pm (to leave at 6.30pm). We were going to go out through Halswell, down Old Tai Tapu Road, out through Motukarara, over Gebbies Pass, maybe stop at the Wheatsheaf for a leak, then head back over the hill and either over Dyers Pass Road or through the tunnel, to meet up (possibly) at the Speights Ale House.

Bear in mind that this is only the first of many (hopefully) Cruisy Wednesday Night rides, so we'll have a good chance to try out some of the variations listed in your post... especially once we start getting some more daylight! Not everyone will be coming every week, too... I think for this first one we might have too many people show up for us to take a more complicated route!

Cool, I'll be looking forward to this ride.

The bike's currently unusable due to a fucked chain/sprockets combo (for maximum damage) - otherwise I'd be on my way to the Little River rally :(

Thankfully, the new chain/sprockets arrive Monday, so I'll be putting them in and wearing them in Monday and Tuesday so I can come Wednesday. If my flatmate gets his bike back by then, he'll come as well. Glad to hear it's learner friendly, as that's just what he needs.

One possible route if you wanted to go about 80Kms (maybe 100) is to Halswell, right at the lights, first left, then you hit a back road to Lincoln. Follow that until you get to the stop sign, turn right, go through Lincoln and turn left at the roundabout. This takes you through coes ford, and you end up at a small backwater place called Leeston. Stop there at the local for drinks, then back to chch the same way (unless there's another fun way to get back - the main roads are as boring as hell).

The roads are pretty good, and the reason I like this road is because it's flat and twisty - a bit of a change from Gebbies pass, or Akaroa.

It'll be good if we go over Gebbies, but can we choose to ride up the front (away from the newbies)? Oh, and will there be fast/meduim/slow groups? That way, everyone is satisfied I think.

Names specific to an '89 GPX?! Um...

You don't have to give your bike a name, but if you find yourself calling it something, then whatever floats your boat. Heck, I don't even call mine "she" or "her", only ever refer to it as "the NZ".

Either way though, when you get her / it / crapheap (;)) running, come along for a cruisy ride. :niceone:

Looks like we might have a few more people than expected. This should be good.

In terms of fast/slow groups we'll decide on the night depending on who turns up, but we'll always make sure theres a lead rider and a tail rider for the slow group, who know where they're going. If you know where you're going and you get bored with the pace, feel free to go ahead and the rest of us will meet you at the destination.

Cool. See you all on Wednesday :niceone:

Indeed. Yeah, that was quite hairy... I think both of us had one end or the other break loose a couple of times. Still, no grit to worry about any more, so hopefully it won't be too bad even if the road does get a little damp. I guess we'll just have to find out on the night.

Damned right, now that's commitment for the rest of you lot! ;)

Damned weather! Been watching the weather reports as well the last few days... it's threating to ruin the first and much anticipated meet!! Still, the response has been way better than what me or Phoenix were expecting... we thought we'd have very little interest and maybe a half dozen would turn up at most! I think it's great to have so much interest - it will be a great opportunity for everyone to meet some new faces, new people to ride with... so yeah, fingers crossed the bad weather stays away!

Either way though, if this Wednesday turns out to be shyte... there's always next week! We'll keep trying until we get the weather we're after... and then keep doing it anyway just for the sheer hell of it.

maybe all I will say is the reason there are few mentors here in chch is cos they end up with the brunt of the blame if things shit themselves.
Dangerous has organised a few rides over the years on kb, and done a good job at taking care of people. But it is a stressfull thing and i can understand why he doesn't volunteer at times.
I know there are some damn fine riders in chch, and I will ride with them anyday ;)
But in that situation very small groups are the best to learn in, one on one even... non pressurised and no egos competing

I agree with that. I guess I just value the likes of Uncle B alot. He often took newer riders out one on one and tought them alot about riding. I believe that is the ideal situation, but I understand that it takes someone with a heart of gold and alot of patience for that role. I also understand that theres alot of pressure on the mentors and not alot of reward.

I had ice building up on my dash and in the folds of my jacket, i had a small pool settle in the crotch area of my pants which seeped through and froze my balls

BUT I GOT THROUGH FOR THE CUSTOMER!!!

Was a lot of fun, a big thanks to all, it was interesting to see all the bikes lined up at BK then watching all the folks who parked their cages in a position so that the would walk past all the bikes to get into to the store.

It was nice to meet many of you, hopefully someone post a decent after ride report.

To those who missed out this time due to other commitments, judging by the comments of some this will become a regular event so there is always next time:woohoo:

Well that was good, even though I nearly burnt y mnounth off/out scoffing fish and chips before jumping on the bike, and remembering I aint put any gas in... it was 6pm already. And once on the road remember that I had forgot my camera... :blank:
Well I did make it by a hairs breath, but who put all the frekin gates and changed the layout of the BK car park. A bit of cross country and J riding I made it in the end, and a shit load of bikes.
A good ride in all, a long time since I had been to Halswell in that direction, I was almost lost, esp with the sunning beeing and burning my eyes so everything looked white.

It only got colder and colder gebbies was 5 then 4 degress coming down the other side.
The beer was nice and chilling... like I needed to chill down!!!
The rockin rollin road around the the tunnel made the bladder :pinch: The loose gravel that was sign posted, but kinda ignored. Then through to the mighty Speights ale house (never had been there) Toilet:jerry: and while walking out and then back in a couple coming out complementing with disgusted comments about expensive stuff... nice place though, and I never found anything expensive ???
And then the run home to home... the iceacle came up on the dash as the temp sunk to 3 degrees C.
Oh glad to sit here and have this coffee.

Looking forward to warmer and longer daylight hours.... and I will remember sunglasses for those ones.

That was cool.

Thanks to all who made the effort and showed up, really made it worthwhile. When phoenix PMed me saying what did I reckon about starting one up, I said that I was keen but that it'd most likely take a while to catch on... we honestly thought it'd be us, plus maybe a half dozen other bikes, tops. Then with the weather earlier today, we thought we'd have to call it off... but after all that, a great turnout! Good to see a good mix too - a lot of the usual suspects (lookin' at you, D ;)), but a good half dozen new faces too, great stuff.

Anyway, good first meet I thought, gives us a good base for having a regular ride!

Some feedback would be cool though - what'd people think of...

The meeting place? There are others we could use...
The route taken? Not too long a ride... or was it too short?
The pace of the ride? Did you feel it was snail's pace or too quick?...and so on.

Can't blame people if they thought I was going a bit slow... I wasn't on my own bike, so I didn't know my mount that well (and didn't want to put it down!)... and just figured out I've never actually ridden in the dark before without the aid of streetlights! It was kinda daunting going around the bays in the dark, felt like I'd never been on the road before... so yeah, hope you didn't get frustrated sitting behind me! Was supposed to be a cruisy ride, though... :bleh:

Anyway, some pics (courtesy of uNople, cheers man ):

Meeting place was great, it's easy to find, and has a huge carpark.
It would be nice for a longer ride, but this was a good ride anyway - it's fun riding in a group.
As for the pace - I was part of the group that went the fast way (out through the back roads) so we were going at a good pace. I think that we will split into wee groups anyway - the traffic lights aren't good for keeping the group together as a whole.

My suggestions? Maybe a highlighted map of the route on kb before we go - so that if we get left behind, we know where we're going and can catch up.

Spuds1234

Ride was great. I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

It was weird riding in a group that large though. Constantly wondering what and where people were doing around you. It was all good once I decided to just make my own space and tear off up a head a bit.

Wasnt such a smart idea on the way back. After the bit of road that had new seal on I stopped to see if anyone would come unstuck on it (as I nearly did), as soon as the first rider came around the corner I took off again. I thought you guys were right behind me. Was I ever wrong.

And to top that, I wasnt listening to the directions and went to the wrong Ale House

Aside from that it was an excellent ride and I will definitly be there in the future when I can.

Yea the Kats always a talking point. Its a pity they dont make bikes like they used to. Modern styling has nothing on the older stuff.

As for the hills, it was a nice view and I figured it maybe a while before I see something like that again so I made the most of it.

Nice to meet you all, tried to say hi to a few, but hard when you get chatting to some. Couldn't stay for the last bit to Speights, had animals to look after, thats life I guess.
Good Job Phoenix and DE... Tho I'm a bit glad I was last to leave and had a good run thru the old Taitapu road. So even tho we got separated, still made it to the right spot in the end. Its very difficult to keep large groups together thru town, thats the only problem with starting in the middle of town. Maybe a meeting place near the outskirts of town? just a thought...

Guilty as charged. Its a naked XJ750, there are still some around with a partial fairing arrangement, I prefer the look of it like that (the fairing is in the garage).

Some may have heard me say at the Speights pub that my bike had developed an odd noise, today has been spent replacing the front wheel bearings and fixing the speedo cable drive, it was a tad messy in there.

I cant remember everyone's names but I said to someone I might have a tail light assembly that would fit, could you please PM me and we will arrange a day to see if we cant graft this on to your bike.

the route was about right for me, but i could imagine as i become a better rider it'd become short, perhaps we go a little bit further each week..untill we're doing runs to queenstown...

pace was hard for my wee 150, i sure took a buffeting on it.

Also cheers to the guys that came back for me hahaha... rechecked my tyre this morning and it was completely flat, had a massive leak from the valve. It must have been semi down and I didn't notice it till my tyre cooled down at the wheatsheff and we took off again.

I reckon the meeting place was perfect. Maybe a regroup at the edge of town after the last lights in what ever direction we go is called for next time.
The distance was a bit short for me, but then I'm on a 650cc bike and been around a while.
I'd be happy even going to Hanmer or the Leader Valley one night, but that might not work so well for the smaller bikes, after all it is supposed to be a novice and small bike friendly cruise.
Riding in the dark is nothing new to me either, done lots of Christchurch to Queenstown or Haast trips and all the way from Picton to Christchurch a few times in the dark. Just be patient, take it a little easier, don't out ride your light too much, and take more notice of those road work speed restrictions, although I have to admit I got caught by that 30km one this time too. Considered it a timely reminder to wake up and remember to take more notice of what I was doing instead if just chasing the tail light in front, especially since it was dark then.

just a thought about the meeting point, altho it is central it also means moving thru town at a very busy traffic period, and almost imediately getting split into small groups. Maybe somewhere else might be better?
