Funny thing is the only way they can import it into Aus is to pull it to pieces and ship it as parts. One of the members over on ADVrider got one shipped from the u.k i think, in 4 crates. It was the only way he could get what he wanted

Coming home from the Naki ride I thought the clutch felt even worse than usuall, infact I didn't think I was going to get up the Whangamoas :shit: I Imagine it's what riding a Hardley Struggleson is like, plenty of noise and fcuk all forward movement

Looking at the cable I really was riding on borrowed time. Otherwaise all other bits are within spec :woohoo:

So you mean the clutch plates were ok? Couldn't have been the cable that was causing the loss of power.
I've never seen a bike clutch in the raw before. Can you see the physical differences between the new & old plates? I guess with so many plates it'll be a little bit off each plate rather than a lot off a dry clutch plate??? Or is it glazing that's the problem?
Or am I asking too many questions as usual?
Shut up Padmei

Dude, the thickness is measured with a micrometer, that's little itty bitty measurements, your standard classroom ruler won't be quite cut the mustard. Usually worn plates are obvious to the naked eye though. The plates will often warp when they thin out which will cause ya clutch to slip.
JATZ- If you're desperate for a cable, the boys at the local shop will be able to make up a new inner for about $15 if you re-use the outer cable housing.
Cheers, CF

I think I should be right C.F. and ConneyR, new cable should be here shortly, I hope, postage is pretty quick from Aus.
I measured the plates with a digital micrometer :shit:, the difference was about .04 to .06 mm difference between old and new plates. The old ones look fairly well glazed though. Possibly from when I had the "heat" issue aswell as using the wrong oil, I dunno, it's just speculation....
It's the first clutch I ever done, pretty simple really, you should give it a go  work methodicly and keep things clean, can't go wrong :niceone:
Now I should really be able to chuck some rocks out the back :D

Same thing happened to me two days before leaving for the Dusty Butt...
The shop made up a new inner cable for me and ordered the genuine cable from Suzuki NZ. They still had one on the shelf and dusted it off for me... I was lucky it lasted the distance for a temporary fix!
I am also led to believe that a KLR650 cable fits the bike as well James...

Looks like 51hp at 6,600rpm (rear wheel or crank?)
Compared to the DR/KLR at about 34hp at the rear wheel.
dino3310
4th October 2010, 11:03
and shit loads more Torque
NordieBoy
4th October 2010, 15:05
They say 52hp for the 750 and 43 for the 650 but 43 is at the crank. It's actually closer to 34. Sooo the 750 should be around 43 at the rear wheel.
Also the 750 is torking at 56nm vs the 650 at 54nm which comes in 1,000rpm sooner.
So the big beast is more of a revver and likes living around 5,500-6,500rpm whereas the 650 likes it slower and longer around 4,500-6,000.
warewolf
4th October 2010, 19:46
Like I said before... the Big makes power the way a DR650/KLR650 doesn't. The 650s are nice-ish off the bottom but have no top end and sluggish throttle response - although Nordie's FCR'd beastie was a lot betterer.
The 640 makes 54hp @ 7000rpm and 55nm @ 5500rpm (crank) and shakes like 40 bastards. :woohoo:

Well seeing as you bastards hassled me about my air cleaner I decided to give the DR a birthday ie spend about 10% of the KTM service/rebuild , that should be a complete restoration on a DR right, WELL.
I jumped on the KTM and raced up to my local Suzuki dealer , walked in the door and a chap walks up to me "how can we help" oh sweet mate arr I would like a price and availability on a DR750 swing arm bearing kit please, "a what" , a DR750 BIG 1988 model , "never heard of it mate you must be thinking of a dr650", arr no I have owned this bike for 19 f in years mate and if anyone referred to my bike as a 650 I'd probably kick them in the nuts, "lucky im on the other side of the counter" yes yes it is. Ok ill have a look on the computer, no nothing listed under DR750 mate, are you sure thats what your bike is, at this stage I quietly zipped up my jacket and retreated out the door hopped on the KTM and sedately rode thru town and back home.

Ha ha, I know the feeling. Had to educate my local dealers to both the XF650 & the DT230. In my experience 90% of Yami dealers still don't know the DT230 was sold new in NZ.
dino3310
16th October 2010, 12:14
had the same experience with my 500:facepalm: lucky the USA is the main market for the 500, as for the 750 you gotta get away from the franchise those fuckas(when they do find the part) will take twice as long at twice the price... i got the fella at Demitry's MC accessories in morrinsville to track parts down, he found two different sets(sizes) of bearings and cut em open to make the one set needed for the BIG steering head, if your that keen on the maintence you might as well get it all sent over from sir Hessler

Ive removed 7kg so far, and may modify the rear for another 7 but don't want to change look to much,
Stiffening up forks would be on the cards also and an under slung pipe like the Dakar's wouldn't go astray either

Yes, it was in good nic I thought (once it was cleaned) and interesting enough the 750 is about 10kg lighter than the 800 I had so should be more mangle off road and perhaps a better platform for a Big Dirt Bike as the KTM has taken over the role of ADV road tourer but not great in loose stuff with the present tires on nor its 220kg girth

Yer not to bad over here, been a lot going on and coming off an injury that has kept me off the bikes for about 5 months (frozen shoulder done by front flipping my dirt bike )
DR blew its gear box on my first ride back so is in shop at moment and I've had to slum it on my KTM and a Honda CB1000 I recently bought (first big 4 I've owned since the mid 80s)
In regard to ADV issues, had nothing to do with DR thread but have had a thread running in JM which was a bit controversal and the Mods had been tring to push me out for sometime now, so I thought it was time to give them what they wanted and bow out (unfortunately it shut me out all the ADV threads but Im pretty busy else where so thats how it had to be)

Yer not to bad over here, been a lot going on and coming off an injury that has kept me off the bikes for about 5 months (frozen shoulder done by front flipping my dirt bike )
What you been up to ?
Shouldn't make fun of a typo, eg: 1998 dr750 when the idiots in Transport in West. Australia had me lisence my 1991 DR800 as a '2010 CUSTOM MOTORCYCLE.' No jokin' you blokes. True story.
Mark, things are O.K. Just sold my DR750 to pay for a 1995 Yamaha XV1100 Virago with only 32400 klicks on it. It needs nothing doing to it as it looks and runs like new. Very happy with it.

Its a bit of a story but here goes.
Pick up DR on Thursday after 3months and over 2k worth of parts put inside those old engine cases.
Headed strait for Murawai to put in some run in miles on new rings. the old girl was running well (perhaps a little bit better due to better compression ?:headbang:),
Arrive at Beach entrance and promptly stalled after the second judder bar, at which point DR refused to restart.<_<
Eventually gave up once I notices fuel pouring out from under the tank when starter was pushed and presumed mechanic had not attached fuel hose (which I couldn't see or get to behind the fuel pump without tools)
Trailered bike home (after having a comfort Hawaiian burger, milk shake, and chips:rolleyes:)
Removed right side tank the next day and again cranked motor over again, motor roared into life and no fuel leak.<_<
Blowd if I know, will have to seek further advise as don't really want that to happen again in-case it become a two wheeled flame thrower in a forest somewhere:nono:
Something to sort out on Monday on I guess :wait:

Before removing the carbs to check the T junction..... remove the CDI , Reg and battery box (dont forget the bolt on the inner gaurd, 10mm head) then loosen the airbox and pull it back a bit. It makes re-installing the carbs a whole lot easier and you don't risk damaging the old frail rubber carb boots.
This method takes a bit longer, although you get pretty good at it DAMHIK  and just makes it easier. If you'd needed a piston/rings I have one here that I'm not using, genuine suzuki job too

Ta, lets hope thats the problem as I was suspicious it could have been an spark problem combined with the carbs flooding and pumping the fuel out through a faulty main jet seal,

The Good
Finally got out on DR yesterday morning, headed out to some cliff top metal roads at Murawai hoping for the best in regards to fuel leak problems, bike was running awesome and I;d forgotten how good these DRs Bigs are.
The Bad
As I reached my destination (pictures to follow) bike stalled once idling
and the Ugly
Fuel coming out air filter box overflow tube
The Good and Bad again
turned fuel off waited a while, turned fuel on bike started and rode Hm, stalled once at lights and redid ritual, arrived home and Dr sat there idling refusing to stall or leak fuel. Drats make up your mind man
The Ugly
Me for the rest of the day after that trial :brick::rolleyes:

Shop has ordered Needle valve assembly (and O ring that goes behind it, I hope)
so should be sweet after that.
Apart from that DR was running real nice, seems a little smoother now with perhaps even a little more power with new rings and bearing and all,
New rear bag from Aussie also working good and a fair bit lighter than the boxes. (KTM one weighs 6kg on its own:crazy:)
Hope to catch up when Big is all back together for a good metal thrash out your way (and perhaps a swap around of bikes for a bit)

Well it has finally happened, DR Big is back on the road, the money tree is empty but after one proper ride I'd have to say it was worth it
:woohoo:
New main jet assemblies and floats have finally fixed the flooding problem and the old girl (24years is old in motorcycle terms) goes beaut.
It took half an hour to do the 55 ks from Murawia to South Head along the beach, somewhat encouraged by a V8 Hylux ute that travel most of the distance with me cruised at 100- 110 most of the way with the occasional burst up to 140 for good measure.
But that was just the beginning

Phew finally finished work, thanks guys for the Christmas wishes and hope to catch up with some of you next year,
Dino would be easiest just being down the road and all and have been promising to bring his baby home for a ride
Will continue my ride story now
So I'm up the end of south head thinking its time to head into the dunes and test this baby out, drop the tire pressures down to 20psi which is enough to ride home on after (that reminds me need to pump them back up now)
So with a lump in my throat at the thought of getting a 170kg dirt bike stuck in the sand with not a soul around to help I headed for them hills, DR had plenty of power and was able to be lugged and still pull though without and issue and finally got to the base of the Monster dune where I stopped for the traditional V and peanut slab

Those Heidenaus lasted well. Trouble free six days apart from the gear change lever snapping. Is it still showing the great welding job that Shrek did or have you replaced it? He was a marvel with the repair. Doing half the first day in second gear wasn't though..:(
By the way, this site is interesting...

Pick up the DR800s tomorrow.....Metal Mulisha is my name...:)
I don't care if none of you are pleased for me, I am excited though....:woohoo:
I will be riding Sunday after playing with all of the bling in the garage Saturday night....Installing the Zumo 600 could be at the top of the list I suppose....
Clean him, take a look at the battery and the wiring.....Take some photos as well.

Yip, thanks. I plan on getting North for Easter (Far North, Poutu, Ahipara and Spirits Bay) but for the time being, I will be happily riding the roads/tracks around South Waikato and the King Country. :)
Oh, the Zumo is a 660, so that's good! I just have to wire it to the bike somewhere. The battery is looking a tad crowded, hot grips, 12V socket, Givi fog lights....Have to look at wiring somewhere from an auxillary for some of this stuff. Not much draw but lots of connections, don't like that, rather would hard wire stuff if I can find a way.

Because this is so fancy, the Zumo came with the plate hard wired with a fuse and bare wires....
I could get it wired to the ciggie lighter, but prefer hard wired to the battery. Something has to be arranged, it is getting crowded down there.
1. The hot grips need to be re-routed to the ignition somewhere.
2. The 12v Cig adaptor needs to be moved, perhaps under the seat or to the rear, plenty of room under saddle at the back - tool box area.
3. GPS can be wired to the battery - bugger all draw there. Even when left on and bike is stationary.
4. The Givi fog lights need to also be re-routed to somewhere.
All in all, a good job for someone who knows what they are doing, not me I am afraid.....

I went for a jaunt this morning around the Firth of Thames, Kaiaua etc...
Great day and the bike performed flawlessly. I forgot just how comfortable the Big is :) I never went over 110kph, I am just trying fuel consumption first to see range on a tank. I will look at running it dry maybe Wednesday, put a bladder in the back of the Givi and just empty her out normal riding....I am guessing 400kph + I hope....?

I have just done an oil change and filter.
It was a bit scary seeing what came out, or rather didn't......
Their certainly wasn't 2.6-2.7 litres of oil there in my pan
She now has the required 2.7 litres as per specification, so the dipstick (not me) reads as it should....
I will monitor.....So far nothing on the floor so that's a good start.....

Checked the oil on a KTM 450 in Picton with eddieb and nothing showed in the sight glass until it was cranked over to 45deg.
Man I hope that guy doesn't get in the news, bleached bones found on side of track type headline...
