I followed one down Stanmore Road (chch) earlier in the week, first time I've seen one in a long long time.It wasn't as "big" as I thought it'd be either, the XT actually looked a lot taller when I was behind him at traffic lights.

It wasn't you JATZ down here for a cruise? :D -edit- No it wouldn't have been as this one had a blue swingarm, yours is white from looking at your pic.

Yer I have been trying to take some weight off the front end to make it turn better on beach, but I really just need to adjust my riding style to suit, Im hoping eventually to take about 10kg off it with alloy brackets etc also I;ll probably try more agressive tires, I allso have an NX650 which is much nimbler but it just doesnt have the mumbo

what size chain are you guys useing?, i'm useing 520 but ive snapped the joiner
twice in the last 2 weeks. the first time was on the old chain the second time on a brand new. fuck knows why, i'm thinking maybe going to 525 for some more strength, both times it happened on the open road.
any ideas?

JATZ
19th October 2008, 20:04
BUggered if I know what sort of chain I got, it's a long bugger though.
I'm guessing your sprokets are all good.
Manual says "daido d.i.d. 520vl.2, 116 links" is the correct chain.
I've never had any probs with mine, "touch wood"

dino3310
19th October 2008, 20:27
the only thing different on mine would be the rear wheel, its of a honda(dont ask me why) so i'm wondering if it because it hasnt got the rubber bushing like the suzuki hubs and its jarring the chain, but if that were the case then wouldn't other none suzukis be breaking chains aswell. maybe it's just one of those things.
fuck then half hour after fixing that the frigging thing breaks down- looks like the fuel line from the pump to carb(maybe) has come loose as gas is pissing down from the back of the carb area.lucky i was close to my job so i left it at work and got the missis to pick me up and all this on the way back from my first ADV ride with the beast----- fuck it was goooood-----

JATZ
19th October 2008, 20:39
seems odd it doesnt have a rubber bush, surely one could be stuck in there somehow, you really need to ditch that honda(spit spit) part.
Fuel probs too, you really are having a bad run

dino3310
19th October 2008, 20:46
was all good till i started homeward even dropped it( low speed 1st gear) maybe she just wasn't ready to go home.
i'll have to put up with the honda rear till i can find one of a DRBIG, do you know of any getting wrecked?

don't know of any gettin wrecked, Arrowrider had the idea of seein if a dr650 swingarm would fit then you get a disc rear, with a few other mods.
You wouldn't want to drop em to often, they're a heavy beast to pick up (personal experience)

pulled a bloody muscle lifting the bugger:sweatdrop- the 20+ litres of fuel didnt help,

Just had a look at that link. The DR750 hub looks very very similar to the DR650 rear hub (well the cush drive side anyway). Might be worth investigating?? (I know that the DR650 is disk vs the DR750 being drum but with a little bit of allow and a tig welder this may be able to be sorted without the swing arm change????

Also Dino - might be worth checking that the chain/sprockets are inline. If they are not the chain will be given a very hard time as any (serious) misalignment will mean most of the driving load is down one side of the chain. Interestingly a 525 chain is specified for the DR650 and yet the XTZ750 (70kgs more and 33ish hp more) has a 520 specified for it. I can understand the XTZ750 with the 520 to and extent as the power pulses are smaller and closer together (it is a 180 degree crank twin) hence smother power but a DR750/800 with intermittent great big lumps of power with a 520 seems a little strange???

Cheers R

i love this thread- lots of good info which is usually hard to come by.
sprockets all look good and inline, was talking to top mechanic today at the workshop, even without the cush drive that chain wouldn't snap its morelikely the joiner was at fault, so im gonna get a rivetted joiner put on.
apparently the 520 is capable of handling the forces of a bike of 150 horses
so i doubt my 60 odd would break it i'll put it down to my chain joining skills(fingers crossed). i'll be throwing money into some decent tyres and breakdown stuff before i look at getting the disc sorted but it is deffinately
on the cards.

The RK 525 XSO is rated to 750cc off road.
I chewed one to destruction in 8000km and it's replacement is running sweetly so far at about 8000km and has had a far harder life (2 up through the Maungatapu etc).

I got about 30,000km out of a DID 525 X-ring.

HogWild used a 520 chain on his V-Rod sidecar in the Dakar.

I'm going to 520 next time the chain gets replaced.

Yer but didnt the Hog chew the CS sprocket to bits in a couple of days?

Good call on the off road vs on road ratings for chains, off road is always lower rating.

Being a single they root chains fast too -- even things like GN250s munch chains fast because of the rat-a-tat-a-tat power delivery, instead of a smooth twin or four. A low-revving DR750... well, those are some big bangs!

has any one had any problems with the carb leaking gas, mine seems to be leaking from the T as it goes into the carbs is this T ment to have any movement in it, i'm thinking it will need replacing are they an easy fix or is it a job for a mechanic. i've taken the tank of once before not keen on atempting the carb removel but if its a no brainer i'll give it a go.

cooneyr
26th October 2008, 18:26
DR 650 carb elbow moved but did not leak. Dont know anything about removal or fixing leak. Carbs are pretty easy to remove, 2 or 3 cables, fuel hose and boot either side. I'd suggest that you find out what make and model the carb is and do some research on the web.

dino3310
26th October 2008, 20:27
the 500 hundy was an easy one to get out but this double is a bit daunting, definately give it a go, info i've gathered so far is that the fuel pump needs replaceing as even when she's not running its still leaking at the carb, where as the diaphram in the pump should be closed when not running. will keep looking for info for now, see if anyone else has had the same prob.

JATZ
27th October 2008, 17:57
Never had any problems with fuel leaking, but the carbs are easy enough to get out, carefull of the rubber boots hooking up to the engine.
Hardest parts putting them back in and making sure the inlet rubbers are properly seated and sealed.
According to the manual the carbs are.............
Mikuni BST33SS , 2 of, should be easy enough to get parts for them, mikuni's a popular carb
I bet you start to really hate that tank set up
Remove the side covers, seat, front beak thingy, then the tank, which is probly full and requires an engine hoist or small crane.............
Then you can check your air filter too.
Have fun with it

UG the wilbers shock is very very nice. Just tonight I did a 50ish km's of corrugated gravel and the XTZ handled it way way better than the DR650 ever did. The bike actually felt comfortable and stable over the corrugations, would accelerate (instead of "bogging down") and was generally very controllable. If you can stump up the cash it is worth the effort. Keen to hear your thoughts on the sus set up when you have had a play jatz.

They just need to borrow one.
When I bought my first Nordwest it had been sitting on the shop floor for 6 years and got re-vinned with a Suzuki headlight and then they put the original one back in once it'd been done.

Carry a small bottle of slippery stuff, (dishwash liquid etc). Pour it around the bead, and "walk around/on top" of the bead, curse, swear, and pry levers into it until it gives up.
Has worked for millions of riders for decades. (have a hipflask of booze with you, Vodka is best).

I saw a home made device on advrider, made out of a modified walking stick with a fork at the top, adjustable for length (somebody may have the link to the post)
Just extend to the length you need and pop it under the footpeg mount, move forward to lift the front wheel
Not a very good description but when you see one you'll know what I'm getting at

edit: FOUND IT ! you can stop looking now

Ahem, don't use a cam locking tent pole for heavy beasts. I cut down an old tent pole that worked perfectly for the DR650 but it doesn't even remotely lock tight enough to hold the XTZ up. I've found that carrying a pillion is a better option :msn-wink:

If it falls over you just pick it up and carry on.It isn't the best pillion bike tho(poor bitches got sore arses) so I brought the GS, that thing just eats ks in comfort.

Went road racing with DR at taupo on Saturday, stuck an old chieng shin road tire on rear, and jumped out into the novice class once the Dr was finally cleared as they wernt to keen to let me out with the trails tire on the front, it was a lot of fun and I saw 175kph on the back straight,

Plus where trying to buy or first house so till we get that all out of the way its hard to commit to anything at this stage.

Havn't done any mods to the Big, I'm happy with the performance as it is, if I want to go fast I'll ride the Triumph.
This winter should see a bit of a sort out though as it's using a bit much oil, hope it's just rings or valve seals or something just as minor, don't really want to know about a full re-build.

HI JATZ Use thicker oil ( actually Harley oil might do the trick) and I wouldnt worry to much as Oil is Cheap

yep the SI invasion would be an awesome trip they got some fab looking scenery down there. would like to go but i wont be able to, start of rugby for the kids, silly season for work blah blah blah blah blah blah,
might try for a trip later in the year for Taranaki/wairarapa and hook up with Neal again, but would have to plan around the family and book well ahead.
Plus where trying to buy or first house so till we get that all out of the way its hard to commit to anything at this stage.

Caught up with Nooles on the KCR:niceone: had an awesome time, unfortunately i sprained me ankle and came home before the 42nd & fishers.
bit bummed but still had a great time.

not alot around bro, 10bikekids got one. there was a black one on trademe last year that sold for 5k that was in newplymouth, theres a lot of them in britan and europe if ya cant score one here you might have to look at importing. there a link on the DRBIG thread on ADV to an outfit in england thats got shit loads of BIG's, africa's and super ten's in stock. could be worth having a look, if i find it i'll pm the link.
are you looking at getting one?

If you go for the 800, you get only 2HP more but the benefit of a rear disc and more comfy seat; however you lose tank volume, less ground clearance and higher seat height & its 12Kg heavier. Also it has double exhaust so double the damage exposure & double the burn area LOL!

write up here interesting:
http://www.suzukicycles.org/DR-series/DR750-800S-Big.shtml

specs here:
http://www.bikez.com/brand/suzuki_motorcycles.php?page=3

My gut feeling is with the 800 they headed towards more of a comfy adv tourer feel, the 750 is a bit more raw and offroady orientated; the big downside bein the lack of rear disc brake tho.

I'm no expert, but just my 2c wirth as someone with a developing interest in the Bigs!

Didn't know the 800 was considered to have a stronger frame - good info Dino! I totally agree on the higher up pipes - saddle bag hell on BOTH sides!

Paladin
29th May 2009, 13:42
FYI, when Suzuki went to the 800 in 1990, the pipes were still set low like the earlier 750S models.

The big changes were made with the 1991 model 800; like the 5L reduction in tank size & higher pipes!

Note also the 800's were water cooled from 1990 - between that & the extra pipe, that probs mostly accounts for the extra 15Kg dry weight.

Personally I'd go for a 750S: lighter, bigger tank, higher ground clearance, lower seat height. The only major downside is no rear disc but since 75% of braking power comes from the front(on the road at least) not a bother I reckon. And don't suppose the seat is THAT much more uncomfortable, hell replace it or restuff it if you're THAT bothered! And power wise what do you give up? 2HP, 4Nm in torque and 9kph in maximum speed - woopdedoo, I can live with it! I don't spend much time over 150kph anyways!!!

The paint jobs on some of the 800's look betterer tho! ;)

If it is a genuine sleeve it is generally just a matter of pressing the old one out and dropping the new one in. generally you can heat the barrel or freeze the sleeve or both and just drop it in. Sometimes the sleeve is semi-finished and requires boring and honing after it is fitted.

Btw i see Schnitz racin now have the 705cc kit available for sale for klrs.(sorry to hijack)

Ahhhh...... NO.

The regrind people said "yeah mate we can re-sleeve that, no worries" so I got a standard piston.
Took the piston and bore to them 2 weeks ago and went in friday to see how it was getting on........
them..... "nah mate we're not happy about re-sleeving that, can you get an oversize piston ?"
me..."Ummmmm yeah, so this $600 + piston is now an ashtray ?"
them ...."yip"
me.... "ah well, people pay more for art which just sits about and does nothing I suppose"

Why can't they resleeve it?? Is the liner cast into the barrel ? that can be difficult
seems odd to me
have you tried someone else?

Yes, the liner's cast into the barrel, if they bore it out the wall will be toooo thin and could lead to other problems.
I have the details of people in Christchurch who MAY be able to do something with it BUT they may take a look and decide they can't do it either.and goddamn it I want to ride a bigger Big, oversize it is :Punk:

I wondered that, the problem is the liner is not smooth on the outside but is sorta finned and it is best to bore all the cast iron completely away. I have resleeved a few and left the cast iron bits in their and never had problems but I don't really recommend it.
