We live in a beautiful country!
987 km today.....I was away early, did the usual, including Pureora, National Park and other routes. Found a new road on the way to Kimbolton, that was a nice change. Disappointed in the closed paper roads though :( around Raetahi. I got the obligatory snap in front of Mum and Dads place.....Stunning day! The DR performs well on fuel economy, that's for sure. Sat on 100-110 kph to see how well she went.

Nope:) Like a Wok, if you clean it you spoil the flavour mate...This one is gonna get a good coating of dust, a protective layer...
Put it this way, you can spot the leaks if it dirty aye.

Well that is a good run indeed, Usually 650ks and I'm done for the day :sweatdrop

Did some calcs on your trip (was easier than doing the actual ride)

Figure you used 50-55 litres of fuel, 2 and a bit tank fulls on 800's 24 litre tank, If you left at 6am spent 11 - 12 hours in the saddle at an average of 80-90kph (allowing for towns) and 2-4 hours stop time you arrived home between 9-10pm (completely knackered)

Not a stalker just into numbers

Would have been a good shake down for DR and obviosly its up for the job :headbang:

Im inspired and might watch some more riding on TV

Nah, must get down you guys way when I'm freed up in a few weeks (birthday parties and Wedding aniversaries to attend to at the mo )

If you want to you could map out trip for us but I'm guessing you were to busy churning out the mile to take to many pics :2thumbsup

Having owned both I wouldn't be so sure 750 is slower, less thumpy, lighter and more Orange maybe, but slower:confused:

Its gained a little bit of grunt since the engine was rebuilt is a bit smoother and doesn't dirty the oil like it used to.

Gold tech valves ? (that could explain its exeptional offroading capacity for its size :shifty:)

Oil is still mint clear after 1200 ks but I guess some of that would be the fact motor was mint clean inside at rebuild

Nice, These Dakar based bikes handle nice as adventure bikes, the 750 feels just like a big dirt bike with aggressive tires and can do 90% of the trails a motorcrosser can (a bit slower of course)

No issues, they were friends of mine, DR was closest thing to a Harley I could find in the garage (piston about the same size) and performance near dead even. (KTM would have been a right pain riding with them as when following you run the risk of a collision out of every corner )

Made a break at end of ride though as DR craved for some off roading

Lower centre of gravity and authenticity, as this is one of the tell tale ID's for a DR750, if you lift them up :nono:they look like every other bike :(

dino3310
22nd September 2013, 20:02
tell you what though, that low slung zorst was a asset for the throw over panniers and stuff, didnt have to worry about guards and racks with my luggage, never drowned in a all the streams i went across, it was based of the dakar version which would explain the low slung as most dakar bikes are.
plus the later 800 zorst's look kinda gay:bleh: and i wouldnt want to confuse the 2 as i reckon this ones the bestest model:Punk::chase:

Had the 750 out on the gravel a few weeks ago and O dear I think it might be quicker point to point than the KTM, how embarrassing

I know there was an unnamed KTM990 rider that was looking at it twice to try figure out what was going on

The point being DR Bigs are a very balanced bike on the gravel (though I'm sure the Kenda trackmasters that were sticking like glue helped a bit)

This happened a couple of weeks ago but since Doctor Big has finally started again I can tell it now without grimacing

Run of the mill ride up to the end of the beach early morning, tide was stalled low, so plenty of time, clever thought, lets see how the DR will do in the dunes.

Headed inland and straight into a quick sand trap, 1h later 3x dig outs and a push from a 4WDer and we were going again.

Give the dunes a miss after that I thought, cruising back down the beach at about 100k's and was checking out for entry points to the left, and the next thing there's water in front of me which got deeper by the time I hit it.

Was sure I would be yanked off the bike but we got through only to splutter to a halt a little further down the beach, tide coming in quickly now and couldn't move the beast up the shore line at all, left it to dry for a while and finally flagged down a 4WD ute, DR would not start so we threw the 180kg + lump on the back and hoped we had not left to late to get back, DR was eventually delivered to the Bike park were some of my comrades awaited to transport me home,

1 week later wouldnt start even off jumper leads

Saturday she had finally dried out (no water got in engine only electrics), took her for a run and we are all good to go again. :sweatdrop

First time I've run into a wave in nearly 35years of running up the beach and I'm hoping its the last

that rubber sock covered bunch of wiring under the dash is a vulnerable spot, why its not under the seat i dont know, prolly not enough room, never had a problem on stream crossings but then i wasnt hitting them at 100 clicks:eek:
one trip up to fletchers the electrics died on me not far from the top, no lights nothing but the motor would run, one thing i like about the SR41 is the ability to push start and its real easy with correct technique... anyways long story short after stripping the bike at camp we found that the solder under the ignition key switch had let go on the terminal.... easy fix:banana:

The last photo Mark, they are just splashes of what are meant to look like paint I guess, grey and black splotches...
Nothing sinister there. I think as this bike was a German original import, it was a horrid pink style graphics...The last owner had these graphics imported and changed the whole bike.

Well it has finally happened, DR Big is back on the road, the money tree is empty but after one proper ride I'd have to say it was worth it
:woohoo:

New main jet assemblies and floats have finally fixed the flooding problem and the old girl (24years is old in motorcycle terms) goes beaut.

It took half an hour to do the 55 ks from Murawia to South Head along the beach, somewhat encouraged by a V8 Hylux ute that travel most of the distance with me cruised at 100- 110 most of the way with the occasional burst up to 140 for good measure.

But that was just the beginning

Phew finally finished work, thanks guys for the Christmas wishes and hope to catch up with some of you next year,
Dino would be easiest just being down the road and all and have been promising to bring his baby home for a ride

Will continue my ride story now

So I'm up the end of south head thinking its time to head into the dunes and test this baby out, drop the tire pressures down to 20psi which is enough to ride home on after (that reminds me need to pump them back up now)

So with a lump in my throat at the thought of getting a 170kg dirt bike stuck in the sand with not a soul around to help I headed for them hills, DR had plenty of power and was able to be lugged and still pull though without and issue and finally got to the base of the Monster dune where I stopped for the traditional V and peanut slab

Yip, thanks. I plan on getting North for Easter (Far North, Poutu, Ahipara and Spirits Bay) but for the time being, I will be happily riding the roads/tracks around South Waikato and the King Country. :)

Oh, the Zumo is a 660, so that's good! I just have to wire it to the bike somewhere. The battery is looking a tad crowded, hot grips, 12V socket, Givi fog lights....Have to look at wiring somewhere from an auxillary for some of this stuff. Not much draw but lots of connections, don't like that, rather would hard wire stuff if I can find a way.

I went for a jaunt this morning around the Firth of Thames, Kaiaua etc...
Great day and the bike performed flawlessly. I forgot just how comfortable the Big is :) I never went over 110kph, I am just trying fuel consumption first to see range on a tank. I will look at running it dry maybe Wednesday, put a bladder in the back of the Givi and just empty her out normal riding....I am guessing 400kph + I hope....?

987 km today.....I was away early, did the usual, including Pureora, National Park and other routes. Found a new road on the way to Kimbolton, that was a nice change. Disappointed in the closed paper roads though :( around Raetahi. I got the obligatory snap in front of Mum and Dads place.....Stunning day! The DR performs well on fuel economy, that's for sure. Sat on 100-110 kph to see how well she went.

Just read the thread from the beginning and bumped the some historic moments with the bikes, am wondering If I'm the only practicing DRBig rider left in NZ ?

This is the Original Orange BIg that Dino first posted about on page 1

Its had 3 owners sinse then in 2008 but this is the last owner it wont be leaving my shed till kingdom come now

Took her out for a burn the other day All the way from Murawai to Rimmers within half an hour of High tide second gear between 20-40kph for 12kms or so but she made it without missing a beat and not even to hot, got a look for Chris and his trainees upon turning up at the Bike Park (he seen it several times in our travels and shows some appreciation for the old girl)

I have even bought an airfare one way to pick it up and haven't won the auction yet...
The price was too good, $55.00 to CHC from AKL. :niceone:
Fly down, camp out in his garage, put on the GPS and ride....
So...come the new year I might be the proud owner of a DL1000, all kitted out ready to ride with a chest of new spare parts as well.
It will be a plane, trains and automobiles episode getting there from Te Aroha, then it will be a long way home.....taking in a few days of scenery.
I looked at these tall bikes back in 2002 when they first came out. I liked them but they looked rather bare...This one doesn't.

Yes I know...I have spoken to him, and yes, it has history but only with one owner...:)
Yep, read his book too and if I win the auction I get four copies of books to read on the way home.... He will autograph the change of ownership for me too...:)

Take it away anyone.....:)
Nothing wrong, fresh Warrant of Fitness. Plenty of tyres and a cool GPS thrown in, with a Touratech mount!
Making room in the garage for a DL....

Saturday morning...

Mounted the GPS and Touratech mount to the cross brace. It looks good. Disconnected the driving lights and the heated grips from battery.
Not going to need these for summer, so will sit under seat until colder weather arrives.

I finally got round to it. The KTM sold in days, the DR has loads of interest but not ridden by any potential buyers...

My DR800s is coming back home to me and I am going to keep it :)
Due to unforeseen circumstances the previous owner has to sell it, so I bought it....
He has only done approx 500 km on it, so all good as far as I am concerned.

Yes, getting that way mate, so I will bring the trailer over and park that there. Then there is room for the 3 Generations of Suzuki! :)

The bike was picked up this morning, I got her home and cleaned her, patted her and gave her a little once over...
Looking good and just as I left her, apart from the side-stand switch isolated (good thing) and the flood lights on the engine bars removed...
I was going to remove all of those things anyway as all of those electric farkles plays havoc with the charging system in as much, it don't.
Hence flt battery when riding!
Heated grips are now plug and play when required, the GPS will be wired and that's it. http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

I think it is part orange too, so it must have at one stage re-incarnated a front end off a MXC..:)

Thanks for buying that as saves me the Hassle, think that would be real good possibly the best model and great mods

Would be keen to catch up and check out the collection

Both the DR and the KLR are heading out tomorrow so will be swapping over for a comparison (results will most likely be DR is faster and KLR newer)

Would have been tempted, IMHO Its a better ADV bike than the next model, really quite off-road worthy and with the 800 motor and less weight should go very well to, you will know soon and would be keen to check that one out and compare notes

I notice a major weight difference for sure and even took this thing around the bike park ok

I parked the DR outside for a bit, put what I thought was the steering lock on...
Well, it was locked and it also if turned a tad more not only locks but turns on a parking light...:) Nice European spec being a German DR 800s
Because it was a bright sunny day, didn't notice. Rolled it into the garage and used one of those flash jump starter thingy...worked a treat, got the engine going but no electrics obviously.
It is now on charge and will be I suppose for 18-24 hours...
Tell ya what, those little jump starters pack a punch, charge, start bikes, and will also charge cell phones, laptops etc. Handy piece of kit to take away. :)

Both my V/Strom and the Africa twin have 2 lock positions. Both activate a park light in the 2nd position. The AT came from Austria so dont know if the NZ new models had this feature.
Ive got one of those little power packs too and they are awesome. Mine will start a 4 cyl car if its just clicking the solenoid. Always carry it now.

You know the bikes and you know who I am.....
I will post some photographs soon, but if you are seriously interested, flick me a call or text.....or sens me a PM.
The history of the bikes is second to none as is the performance.

Merry Christmas all out there....
