Every Wednesday - Meet at Burger King carpark on Moorhouse Ave at 6.00pm for a 6.30pm departure.

Right, time to kick of the new season, being spring and all. The first official ride will be Weds 1st of Oct. This is the first Weds after daylight savings kicks in. See you all there!!

These rides are designed to be a social ride and an opportunity for newer riders to gain experience from the not so new riders. The destination will generally be a pub for a drink and a chat.

I must stress that this is not a race from point A to point B. If you want to "see how fast you can go" then please don't come along.

Ideally we will decide on a route on the thread beforehand and we will have a briefing at the carpark before we leave when we will explain the route and re-group points.

1. The Duvauchelles Crew
First of all, naturally the ride has developed into two distinctive groups. One group heads to Duvauchelles every week. We’ve got no problem with that but this group is not considered to be a part of the cruisy ride. They do not need to be organized. Therefore,we ask that they depart from the Burger King carpark by 6.20. This will leave a much more manageable group, being the “cruisy” ride and will help reduce confusion at the carpark.

IF YOU STAY AT THE CARPARK PAST 6.20 THEN BE PREPARED TO MEET THE FOLLOWING STIPULATIONS. IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT, THEN LEAVE.

2. Rider Responsibility
It is the responsibility of each and every rider to ride safely and within their abilities. If any rider acts in a dangerous manner then they will be asked to leave. Remember, you not only put yourself at danger but also the other riders and the general public. If you do not understand this then do not come.

3. Rider Assistance
At the carpark we’ll ask that riders who would like some one on one help will be asked to put their hands up and we’ll ask some of the more experienced riders to provide that help. Please don’t be shy. This is an excellent opportunity.

4. Leader
The cruisy group will have a lead rider appointed each week. Obviously it will be someone with reasonable skill so as to not piss everyone off. The leader will stop at the pre-determined regroup points and wait for the entire group to arrive before departing.

5. Tail End Charlie
A TEC will also be determined as a safety measure.

For a link to descriptions of some of the regular routes we take go here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=1823496&postcount=521) and here. (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=1834883&postcount=642)

Please keep this thread on topic
Last years thread is here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=63581)

Disclaimer: Neither myself, nor any other participant is responsible for another rider's actions. Each rider is responsible for their own riding.

Will pop in and visit them today, I really need it back soon so we can get some time on it before the trip in November, I don't want to be travelling 400+ kms as the other half's first experience on the back of a bike.

Just an FYI update for all those outta the loop. And hopefully my bike is fixed by then. Nothing serious just a fairing replacement.

The Department of Internal Affairs has written to key IT providers reminding them about this year's change to daylight saving.

The Minister of Internal Affairs, Rick Barker, announced in April that the period of daylight saving was being extended to 27 weeks. From this year, daylight saving will start on the last Sunday in September and end on the first Sunday in April the following year. Accordingly, the next period of daylight saving will start on Sunday 30 September 2007 (when 2:00am becomes 3:00am) and end on Sunday 6 April 2008 (when 3:00am becomes 2:00am).

Thanks to the money pinchers at SHELL:angry2::bash:
The GRETA VALLEY SHELL SHOP no longer has fuel for sale.:eek5:
Shell had stoped delivering to the garage and are removing the tanks soon
This means for rides from christchirch to kaikora you HAVE TO fuel up at amberley, or try and get to Chevoit on your tank.:crybaby:
Some crusers with smaller tanks may not make chch to kaikora via the inland road without a refuel
Please let any other groups you know of that this has happened,

again Greta Valley is no longer a fuel stop!
But the pub still has beer:yes::woohoo::wari:

as the owner of a machine with an 8 litre:laugh:fuel tank i have to plan my stops carefully.
i always fill at cheviot, kaikoura and amberley when heading to picton.of course, thats after filling up in belfast:confused:that way i always have a bit left in reserve if cheviot, domett or the others are closed(which they often are)
i have had a few rides at night to the ferry and have to carry four litres for the long lonely section between kaikoura and blenheim:no:
who cares,at least its not boring:laugh:

Hey guys, learner here. I'm really keen to get into these rides, of course, but just wondering what sort of times they take? And have the pubs you've stopped at ever had problems with under 18s coming in? I don't plan to do any drinking, but it'd be a shame to be told to wait outside with all the bikes I've ever dreamed of to stare at for a while. Well, a shame in a relative way then. Anyway thanks for setting these up, and I'd love to join in in a couple of weeks.

Hey guys, learner here. I'm really keen to get into these rides, of course, but just wondering what sort of times they take?

2-3 hours but thats after we stop, I am generally not rushing away so I can get home by 2130 to get ready for work.

Most of the places we seem to end up have outdoor areas or are family restaurants so its normally all good.

Anyway thanks for setting these up, and I'd love to join in in a couple of weeks.

Look forward to seeing you.

The road to Akaroa is nice, grit free and no nasty suprises lurking

There is some shite (cow) on the road over the back of the wheat chief

evans had 10m of grit at the very top yesturday, but you slow down and are upright for it anyway as it's an intersection with blind spots everywhere.

other than that the road works around the otherside still dont seem to have done anything.

Unfortunately (well not for me I like gravel) SDU is right. Travel demand has nothing to do with the timing of road works - the weather is a far more important factor.

Cheers R

Robo, we always have a tail end charlie system where an experienced rider will bring up the rear and make sure nobody gets left behind. In saying that we generally travel a fair bit in 100km/h zones so you'll find 70km/h quite limiting

On this side of the hill, especially Akaroa Highway, well, 90 to 100 would be nicer but as they say people will keep an eye on him no matter what.

Im sure the TEC will look after you mate. There are always members who tootle along at a very leasurely pace.
Its not about the speed, its about the ride.

In saying that, I finnished work today, have 4 weeks off, pick up my seat from uphoslterer tomorrow, painting is completed and I collect the tank, panels and wheels on thursday, the last parts to buy are a bottle of brake fluid and a jug of oil.....such a problem ......
So I will have 12 full days to work uninterupted on my ride.
I think I will make it to the first ride of the season to join you all.
Roll on the summer, warm nights, hot days, clear roads, and a tank full of gold!

Sounds like a job for the super slow old fart on the harley..... hell thats me.

The Diamond Harbour road works near Blacks point has been sealed but is gravelly. Went over Gebbies to Akaroa on the main road last weekend and the road was fine and CBR250Tom rode the wheels of me coming back.

Robo, 70km might be a bit slow for any distance on the open road.

McWild, no probs.

Ughh - commiserations, Helen - the Bonnie laid down when I suggested her and I leave the girrls night at S & Sport early the other night. Cost more than the service she'd had done the previous day. I'm sulking still. LOL. I'm feeling proud tho, 'cos I learned that I can pick her up all by myself, whoo hoo!

Will be joining in on Wed, it's Little Boy's birthday but partying on Friday so no excuse not to turn up on the first night. I'm looking forward to getting out into the fresh air again ~

The Ducati fell over in the garage last night so some cosmetic enhancement is required:crybaby:.......thank god I have two bikes!!!

Really looking forward to cruising on Wednesday nights again:niceone:

Thats a poor excuse. Bring your gear along and I'll take you on the back of the Katana.

The Raptor unfortunately wont come out to play until the front discs get sorted. I have no idea what warped them, apparently sometimes you get a bad batch of discs.

Thanks for the offer but... no. Will just play this one by ear. Might just come ride it anyways (I think the warrant may have a few days left, and the tyre is worn more in the middle so I'll just have to lean more!)

Bugger bout the Raptor! Hope it gets sorted soon

My old Guzzi foul plugs on 95-96, pink at bit on 91 and run best on 98.

New tar seal is slippery because of the oil (tar) and has to wear off and if it rains the oil will come to the surface and be real slippery.
So be a bit careful.

Looks like fouling, will try 96 on Hampton Hondas recommendation and wait and see.

After thinking about this for awhile.
By changing the petrol or spark plugs to hotter one's you are treating the cause and not why is causing it.

Your modern low mileage bike should run on 91 petrol and with standard plugs just fine.

The question should be, why is it not doing that now?
You would have to think that the last owner had the bike running fine?

So I think your bike may have had after market pipes on it and was tuned to those pipes.
When he/she sold/traded the bike he/she put the standard pipes back on like a lot of people do and then sold the pipes later.

So you may have to check the jetting etc to see if they are standard.
Or maybe put some after market pipes on to get the bike to run properly again.
Good excuse to buy some exhaust pipe anyway.

Well you've got one of the best Twin cylinder engines ever made strapped in a tight and very capable but twitchy chassis.
My memories of riding one was that they are not the most confidence inspiring of bikes but the engine made up for it.

Perhaps after a few more rides thing will settle in for you, just dont push to hard too soon.

sounds like you need to find yourself a nice back road way out where there is little traffic, but a good number of corners, and spend a few hours going back and forwards on it. Lower styx and Spencerville roads come to mind.
Take note of you speed into corners, braking points etc, and slowly increase them.
Im not encouraging doing it at speed, 100kph is fast enough to do it at.
This should allow you to get the "feel" of the bike under you and build your confidence up all areas of your ability.
When you feel good about it during the day, pick a nice warm night and do it again, the difference is buzzy.
Then do it on a day that it rains, that will learn you heaps.
Its all to do with practice, getting to know your own limits, and trusting the bike.
Remember, you will not out ride the bikes abilitys if you are staying on or near the road speed limit, so, that too fast into a corner thats making you butt squeeze, is just a push and a throttle twist away from salvation.

Tyres in good condition and correctly inflated? Suspension in good condition? Suspension correctly set up for you? Worn chassis components? Accident damage? All these things could cause what you are experiencing or maybe its just the way Suzuki designed it.

Now I have essentially no real knowledge and he self admittedly has only a little more. Have decided it's beyond me and will take her to Hampton so I can get my ass back in the saddle. Already missed a ride with mates this weekend that I won't see again for ages!

Big age range... some as young as 16, some as old as, well, old enough lets say :)

The rides are generally aimed at being pretty inclusive... if you're not so sure about hill work, then definitely say so. There's a tail end charlie to make sure you're doing ok, and plenty of the riders are happy just to cruise along, so if you're just looking to take it easy, you won't get lonely. On the flip side, there's a few quicker riders who you can follow if you're looking for a little more excitement.

Big age range... some as young as 16, some as old as, well, old enough lets say :)
I like you.........
Thats spot on:Punk:

Also if any newer less confident riders have a word, there will always be someone who you can follow, watch their lines etc

I personally found that a great learning tool early last summer on these rides

If all goes well I'll be there tonight.

Any tips for cold hands? I find my leather gloves get quite cold even on a warm'ish morning on the way to work just 'cos of the wind blowing on them, it'll probably be worse on longer rides.

I'll need to suck it up for today since I'm coming straight after work, but for future, glove liners? insulated gloves?

I invested in a pair of Oxford heated hand grips
Best $120 I have spent in a while.

And before all you buggers say HTFU you dont need heated grips,
Take you heaters and aircon units out of your cages for a winter and HTFU yourselves!

Gloves are like helmets and jackets, can never have too many. Get yourself some more suitable ones for colder riding

Alternatively, you can get thin thermal gloves that'd possibly fit underneath your existing ones.

Failing that, you're only left with a small HTFU pill which you take with water

Weather is looking pretty good... bit of luck we won't arrive at BK 20 minutes after everybody has left again

Thermal liners of those fine wool merino gloves are good and you should be able to get them at the right price given the time of year.

Well I'm still buggered if I know where the pub is. I thought I had it sussed following a group of half a dozen bikes into town from Tai Tapu but they all ended up fucking off in different directions. I gave chase to a couple who seemed to be heading in the right general direction, but after being screwed over by several sets of red lights and not being able to catch up I was all of a sudden felt compelled to pull over to the side of the road and dance disco with a couple of members of the local constabulary.

No really we did expect a few people to be there already. As we were comming in to land there were a couple of bikes and we thought the would be the back markers. This lead us to question if we were in the right place, at least until the hoards showed up. A nice gentle cruise for Jwalker and I so it must have been all the stops the flat landers used that slowed them down.

Certainly the road up Dyers Pass is in much better nick now, only one or too bits of road works still going on and very little traffic.

Stoked to see a lucky strike RGV SP out and about, I lusted for one for many years....Yep... so did I, from about 16... then one day I realised, 'Hey, I'm a DINK!', and they're so cheap now there's no reason why I couldn't have one in the garage! (plus I've been building my other bike for an age and was getting withdrawl symptoms)

So I brought one! You should too! They say you'll only be sixteen once.... they lie!!!! :D :D Looking forward to finishing the other bike, then I can lavish the attention on it that such a bike deserves

BTW, it's not an SP, not even a factory LS... It's a 1993 VJ22P which was built by an RGV nut from up north, he did a pretty nice job on it, especially the logos on the side panels. After doing the Lucky Strike vinyl job on OABs GSXR1000, I know how hard it is to get the proportions and placement 'just right'.

There will be fireworks, trust me on that, you have been warned.
Do with the warning, what ever you like.
And once they notice there are a number of patcher's, some will start looking for them.
After all they did stop Ulysses and that is a group of well known harmless old farts on bikes.
A lot of gangs started out as harmless Motorcycle Clubs.

You can getaway with a small badge on the bottom edge of your jackets.
Maybe on the front, but never a club badge on your back.

I have to agree with this, you wear a patch , sholder or back, its a label on a biker that tends to cause the wearer problems in the end.
People dont stop and read the patch, they see it and you are instantly marked "bikie" you will draw the attention of other groups soley because of this, especially the blue group. A reason for a random stop with aggro.
Tee shirts and the like dont draw the same attention because of the number of tee shirts out there with every thing on them, but leather jackets with "patches" automatically label you as a 1% er.
You dont need that agression.
Lived it, left it, will not return to it.
There are plenty on KB who know this from their own experiances.

Think I'll learn how to do carbs myself this time, sick of spending big $$s at shops just to have things back to not-working 3 or 4 months later. Might pop by (on my reliable bike - has pedals ) to say hi.

how often are cleaning your air filter , if it gets fixed then gets bad again, is the filter becomeing blocked and causeing this problem?
Just an idea off the top od my head:rolleyes:

Air filter was replaced along with oil filter/oil/carb slides/etc last time I had the carbs done by the shop.

Haven't checked it recently, but that was only a few months ago - will have a quick look-see tonight.

I get the feeling there's other things wrong with the bike (fuel lines? fuel pump? jets? needles? somethingaratherelse?), and the shops have just been quickly going over the carbs and not really checking into everything. Need to get down and dirty myself - I don't mind spending the time so much to make sure it's done right -_-.

So headlamps getting enlarged - or is it a nip/tuck job? The latter would probably be more appropriate. :devil2:

I'm no expert but if you've had the carbs tuned and fresh filter it may be worth checking your ignition system, could be a faulty coil / cdi etc causing a loss of spark and hence unburnt fuel / misfire. The early gsxr's had problems with this from memory...
