I'd hoped I'd get some gas too but they were all out of 95 and I didn't think I'd run the aircooled motor on 91.
What compression is it running?
Both the Nordie (10.5:1) and DR (9.5:1) have a noticeably better bottom and midrange on 91.
Come to think of it we also run my XR250 racebike on 91.

Haven't tried 95 or 98 in my DR yet, but not feeling the need, seems to have plenty of guts on good old 91 to me!

Yeah the older 3 blade jobs on the lattice towers are smaller than the new 3 bladed ones on the tube towers and both of those types aren't too loud, but crikey those twin bladed Kiwi designed ones spin much faster and screech very loudly, I'd say giving wind power a bad name. Perhaps they are more efficient, there'd have to be some reason they were used.
Windmills, there are now 4 different sizes on the hills up there. The new 2 blade ones at the Pahiatua track end are the smallest (1) the ones on the towers at the north end of north range road are the originals (2) then there are the ones on the saddle road (3) and at this stage the ones in the middle of north range road are the largest (4) from my, a local point of view if they where all the bloody same size it wouldn't look so bad on the horizon but as it is in my opinion it looks stupid so much for resource management.
But wait there is more Kahutawara Valley up behind Massey currently in progress, keep an eye on the horizon its getting uglier.
Regards GSers
EDITED
What I have found out so far.
Originals (2) Blades are 23.5 Metres
Saddle Road (3) Blades are 35 Metres and are on 70 Metre Towers
Middle of North Range Road (4) Blades are 45 Metres not sure how high the towers are.
The last lot all came past my work by truck 1 piece at a time they came in through Port Taranaki.
The previous lot Saddle Road came down from the Port Napier

Yeah wasn't including the saddle road ones, but are they not the same as the middle ones on North Range Road?

I believe the ones in the middle of north range road are the largest I will ask the guys from Vistas next time they come into work.

That thing is monstrously HUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGEEEEEEE!!!! I've never seen one that big before; and a very weird noise as those blades whoosh round past you! Mental!

I find it weird around that area with the shadows of the blades. Catching all these movements in your peripheral vision is real freaky. Even driving through the Manawatu Gorge can be a challenge.

Individual GPS track logs are now available via the link in my signature for Wharite peak, North Range Road, and the Mangahao Dams track.
For those of you without GPS you can load these into Google Earth and see where we were.

That'd be over 100 metres high son, not 100 foot high, if the blades alone are 45 metres, that's 90 metres diameter plus the tips weren't coming closer than 20 or 30 metres to the ground. So yes they are big f..kers.

Yeah those are the Saddle Road ones, not the North Range Road jobbies.
These are them at the North end and middle http://windenergy.org.nz/nz-wind-farms/operating-wind-farms/tararua - those middle ones are 3 megawatt each - crikey.

Just throwing a few ideas around, but have been thinking about organising a 'trail ride' for adventure bikes. This is just a bit of offroad fun for the big bikes, to improve skills and have a laugh. Only road legal bikes allowed (to keep the hoons away).
The family piece of dirt (near Pongaroa) is nice rolling hill country, with plenty of challenges. Plenty of nice gravel and interesting tracks nearby.
Winter's almost here, so it may have to wait until late in the year. Need full knobs in winter. It can get boggy.
Accomodation near Pongaroa.
Wotcha reckon.

its a lovely day on the coast
I might have to go for a ride. The klr is in bits waiting on an engineer to glue bits back together so I'll be on the DT.
I'd like to have a potter up Odlins Rd and explore a few nastier side trails. Was intending to head up between 1-2 this arvo although I won't go unless I can find someone to go with.
any takers?

Hi Mark - reach Fred101 - he was hoping to go - me, I'm supposed to be doing something construcutive - like painting her bookcase which I began in Feb last (08 that is) and it did not pass the Quality inspection - 'she' ( and I love her to bits!) is off on a road trip with her nursing colleagues
Back to tidying the garage in readiness for a spot of painting the bookcase

thanks Dave - certainly one of the more challenging tracks in parts - the surface of the main track is actually easier (with its rocky base) than sections of the Pram eh?
Hope you're still recovering well and see you Friday - I've committed to bring the big bimmer so I'm apprehensive about Matahiwi, Fishers and 42 - specially if there's a lot of rain between now and then.

The front is pretty much round. Paul(Howie) & I checked the rim on Easter monday the day after the crash and it seemed to run true, no obvious flat spot anyways! We did release some torque off the front forks, sure hope they are not bent!

Nah, it's simple really. Over about 70, you're actualy going fast enough to get above the sand. You just skim across the surface and don't sink in. The secret is to sit right back on the seat, and hold the bars real lightly. The front waves all over the place, so it's all about managing the tank slap.
Great fun.

I will also have to give Odlins a miss today. Last night I was fitting a smaller countershaft sprocket for the Cnut Hill expedition. Instead of a c/shaft nut it uses a internally splined retainer (washer) that slips over the shaft to a groove on the shaft, then rotated half a spline and bolted to sprocket. The retainer is worn & suspect. Fingers crossed I can get a replacement before the SI invasion.

Nordie/Bart thanks for the heads up about e clips. Did a trial run and it was relatively easy to install with vice grips. And jesus they are springloaded and uncontrollable when you know it off the shaft. However the shaft groove is about 6mm wide - is it good practice to install 2 e clips side by side to take up the slack?
A google search found someone using RTV silicon to stick it to the socket to keep the e clip inplace. Also RTV on chain link clips has anyone tried this?
:2thumbsup Underground thanks I will take you up on your offer until I get a new clip & sprocets. Will send PM.

Since several of us are skint/unemployed, & several have quite full-on job/financial commitments at the mo; do you guys fancy just using June weekends for a few day rides? Have a bit of a break from the long weekends away this month? It would also give the guys who can't get away for long weekends at the mo some opportunities to get all back together for some rides; Howie springs to mind for example!
(Then there's always the Mid Winter Madness Ride Clint is organisin for late July to get the next big long weekend away fix in!)
I still haven't been out to Castlepoint & i also reccied the gravel road out to Flat Point Rd/Glenburn Rd. There's Glendhu Rocks too.

WELLINGTON WAIRARAPA
Strong, bitterly cold southerlies expected to spread north early
Sunday morning. In the 24 hours from about 8am Sunday expect
10 to 20cm of snow above 300 metres and lighter falls down to about
200
metres on the hills.
200 metres...got a heater eddieB?.A mate is at the top of Miromiro road,he reckons he is 199M,top of the Taka's is 555M
:) I'm on call for work & there's no way I'm getting out for a ride this weekend. The phone started ringing at 7:20am this morning and is currently doing it's best to give me a brain tumour.
I seem to be just below the cold line on the hill, frosts stop 300m further up the hill, as does any low cloud.

well while you lot have been dicking around on internet forums I've been productive.
Gave the klr a major wash
new oil and filter
clean and reoil air filter
adjust dohickey
adjust and lube chain
tighten a few misc nuts and bolts
tires are getting marginal and front pads a bit thin but all ready for the next ride

that sounds a bit like what I have planned for tomorrow, plus changing my spark plug, checking valve clearance's, and change of fork oil.

Changing the fork oil to something more suitable if it isn't already is probably the 2nd cheapest bang for buck performance upgrade a rider can do after fitting an appropriately sized front sprocket.
I did the PD when I got it and it made a world of difference, I do it to most of my bikes.
Fitting new front springs is probably 3rd, and is an option I'm currently considering.

whats involved in changing the fork oil and what did you use?
I am going to use 10 weight fork oil, which is what the clymer manual says is the normal for the earlier model KLR's, On mind it is relativly easy to do, Just remove the drain screws at the bottom of the forkleg, drain the oil, remove front wheel, remove fork cap, pull spring out, replace drain screw, full compressed fork leg to correct level, reassemble. Although I haven't done mine yet, and I'll probably remove the fork legs, as I'm going to re-grease my steering head bearings as well. Thats because I stuffed the orginal ones in about 15,000km.
Fitting new front springs is probably 3rd, and is an option I'm currently considering.
Yep I'm thinking about doing new fork springs for mine as well, they can make a great improvement.

Hope it is just a fluid issue and nothing more serious:doh:

Well my mate Ben is comin on his Dakar & the only place he's been in the 'Rapa on adv bike is White Rock; so anything other than that I suggest! We're gettin a late start but we should have time for Sutherlands Hut easy or we could head north for a longer ride towards Riversdale - do Summer Hill & Homewood on way there OR detour out to Flat Point on that gravel. I haven't been out to Glendhu Rock so have no idea how much has been sealed on that road. I'm easy mate! Ben will probs be keen to give the Dakar a try offroad as its a fairly newbike for him, which Sutherlands would take care of.

Met up with Dave, and then Ben, at Caltex pretty much dead on ten. I am afflicted with the same head cold as Dave and Mark. Mine has just moved on from the "warm liquid gooey phase". Taking this into account I took the R100RS rather than an "adventure" bike, to keep as warm as possible.
What a cracker day, cold but still and sunny. After a spin across the Hill road we had an enjoyable brunch outside in the sun at Toppy's, complete with attention from the regular serving staff, before parting company at about midday. The adventurous ones heading for Sutherland's Hut and me for Wellington. The Southerly has only just arrived here and so far no action apart from some clouds and bit of a breeze.
We will wait for Dave to report in...........

6th June 2009, 19:29
Great to see you Michael - that Beemer is sure in mint condition!
After a casual pitstop at Cleavage Central, Ben & I headed for Sutherland's Hut for Ben's first visit there and his first proper offroad adv ride on his new Dakar!
On the way in the grader had stripped the gravel bare so we zooooooomed up that bit. When we got to the start of the track proper the cold southerly could already be felt - figured by the time we got out it was gonna be :cold: (and it was LOL!).
The puddles were deep, that yellow clay shit was slippery as snot and three of the five river crossings were DEEP with all the wet weather having cut the rivers into a deep V shape and big boulders all over the shop! One of the crossings we had to venture 10 yards up stream for a new crossing and then edge the bikes thru a boulder bank back to the main track! The track in general is getting pretty rugged now - sure different to goin in there in summer!
One exit we both got some nice front wheel pop up as the exit had gotten quite a bit steeper than usual! Good fun tho!
Made it to the Hut with no major offs altho Ben had a little sly slide off on the wet grass behind my back! ;) Saw a bloke & his dog and a gun headed up Cnut Hill on a quad - wished him luck and NO I wasn't tempted at all! By the time we hit the Hut we were pretty hot & sweaty - it was hard work in there today!
On the return things got a little more interesting! I made the fateful mistake of saying:
"No major offs so far!"
First we saw some trampers by one crossing and then I proceeded to get my back wheel sliding on the far bank exit and dropped the DR in the drink in front of them all!
Then we came to that crossing where we had to go further upstream thru the boulder bank. For some reason it seemed trickier on the return = DR in drink a second time!
:gob:
Even so the river crossings WERE fun and certainly gave a sense of achievement! And that was my undoing - thought we were done with the hard bit - err no we weren't! On the climb up through the clay sections got the DR up on a narrow wet section a tyre width wide and , err, you guessed it, DR slid off and I dropped it for a 3rd time.....grrrr!
Result - another bent riser bolt, the RHS this time(!), or maybe its the bars! Not major tho!
Ben did great, no major offs or even drops like I had! Once out we felt the full force of the southerly, few drops of rain as we headed to Martinborough for a refuel at Toppys(of course!). The grader had re-gravelled the road out so that was a bit more fun - few slidey moments!
We both had freezin cold wet feet and it pissed down on the Takas too but was a good day and great fun!

Hi all,
New adventure rider here. Done heaps of VMX since arriving in NZ 3 years ago but criminally only used my DR650 to get to work and back for the last 18months, until last monday! went into the karapoti track from the akatarawa road entrance to the mungys and rode through to the pram side then home to Waikanae. Passed through snow and 4 rivers with my new biker mate on his KLR250. Both on road tyres(trail wings)- fun on the wet clay! we didnt even lower the pressures - Dumb! but fun! No spills though - more luck than judgement I think.
Anyway, will keep checking the forum now and meet up to see the apparently excellent views at Toppys! and head out for a ride with you guys.

Don't know if I'll bother straightening it, kinda funky lookin all curled up on the end aye!

Might pack a couple of spare levers in the tool kit tho!
;)
You would have had fun in there today Bart!
Cable tie a broken clutch and brake lever somewhere obscure on your bike then they are always there if you need them.
