Odlins is a sweet all weather ride now. Those 4x4 guys have done some "grading" over the winter and it is all pretty good. Not that you'll need to worry about rain, if today was anything to go by:sunny:
Sorry cant make it to see the new bike...?? But off VMX racing at Feilding - Lees Rd if you fancy watching old blokes trying to start old bikes!

The ride this weekend with Mark S is all go. :wings:
We're intending to meet at the Waikanae coffee cart at 8.00 Saturday (27th Nov). Ride to meet Bart at Shannon or Ashhurst (he's just going for a day trip), perhaps take in Takapari Rd, backroads to Taihape, ride the station before Gentle Annie etc. Bart is doing a round trip Back through Gentle Annie, Hawkes Bay etc.
Mark S & I will do 42nd Traverse & then stay at Taumaranui. We'll use that as a base to do Fishers & Old Whanga Rd & a few other worthy road / tracks. Home Monday.
Basically make it up as we go along.
PM me if you want to come along.

Hi Eddie, think he might mean this track here, (" http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/115493-Two-nights-away-Rangitikei-and-Hawke-s-Bay?p=1129597671#post1129597671 ') it's probably only about 10km and is a paper road through a couple of farms. I almost caught a Pic of the elusive Bart lying down when we went through last Christmas.

Looks cool. I may be interested in a day trip up to Taihippie and a look around thereabouts if your planning on doing any of those roads around there.
If it's raining or work carries on how it has been this week I may just stay in bed however.

The road I was referring to was Matawhero Rd, which is not a paper road. But any & all paper roads are open to suggestion. Always keen to see new tracks.
This ride could be characterised as the 'Make It Up As We Go Along Ride ('MIUAWGA' ride). The goals for Mark & I are to do the 42nd, Fisher & Old Whanga some time during the weekend. But we'd prefer to do the 42nd saturday afternoon if possible.
This is a Daytripper friendly ride. Let me know you are coming & we'll try to accomodate. If your plans are different to ours, we'll split amicably.

you forgot the 'Both Ways' bit on 42nd/Fishers/Whanga :woohoo:
if its really muddy on any I'll have to bail as my back tire getting pretty transparent.
Tony (Gloves - DR650) is intending to do at least a day trip and possibly an overnighter
Hopefully we'll be in Ashhurst by 9.30- 9.45 and in Taihape between 12-1pm
I was hoping to take a fairly convoluted route from Ashurst to Taihape - there some absolutely awesome gravel and seal in that area.
I suspect that doing Takapri Rd might make the day too long - I think I'd rather save my energy for the 42nd on Sat arvo
Eddie - going through the Gentle Annie with Bart and then back down to Wellywood would be a great days ride
woohoo were going riding
bart
23rd November 2010, 19:28
I'll see you guys at Ashhurst at 9.30.
Takes about 30 min from the road to the hut up Takapari, so you're looking at an hour round trip without sightseeing. On the RRRR we usualy get to Taihape about 2pm (but the pace ain't too hot).
Looking forward to this. :woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:

Yes, I did Waiouru - Taupo - Napier - Taihape - Wellington getting home from the Waiouru ride, was a great run through the Gentle Annie.
After the Napier Taupo road then the Gentle Annie the front tyre on the 950 is looking like I'm going to run out of tread on the sides before the center wears out, there's not a mm of unused rubber on it.

That grass track is called Kotukuraeroa road, and runs between Torere rd, and Spooners hill rd, via Pungatawa rd, The northen end is probably under 20km from taihape.
I'm out for this weekend due to other committments. Have a good ride guys.

I've been through the grass track job twice now (different to the station mentioned earlier, Matawhero Rd). That track's got something in for me. Cost me a clutch lever the first time, and a gear lever the second. You really need full nobs on the front for that grassy shit.

Come on Bart theres only the one big mud hole, few ruts hidden in grass, and water running down the track in places. Yeah the bit I didn't think of is that it's probably not on your quickest/ most likely route particularly if your hitting Matawhero Rd

For a while I’ve been keen to do a night trailride – well the time has come and the forecast for tomorrow night is fine with a full moon.
We are starting from Karapoti carpark at 9pm, meeting any Kapiti riders at Dopers Creek at 10pm. Duration about 4 hours but it won’t be a difficult ride apart from the dark changing your perception how deep that rut is.
There'll be 3 of us on 250 Yamahas, is anyone else keen? :shit:

Well the night ride was enjoyable last week, two new riders (father and son on 250's) joined me on a loop thru the Pram track, Rimu Rd to Orange hut, Hydro Valley Rd, Whakatiki Rd. Actually the noobies were faster than me back thru the Pram track so I took my revenge by leading them up Deadwood. They got to Cedarholm Creek OK but the steep climb out sorted the men from the boys.
Trivia - it was still very warm riding at night. Only saw rabbits,1 morepork, some hunters in 2 4wd's. No mountain bikes which are practising for the Karapoti Classic at the mo. I was breathtested on the way home thru Upper Hutt.
Will do another ride tomorrow night (Wed 23 Feb) starting from Karapoti carpark at 7:30pm so the noobies can see Deadwood in the daylight? Will be finished by midnight if you're interested.

:woohoo: Another great ride. This time we went thru to the top of the rock garden and the return trip has one section that is challenging enough in the daylight so it was pray and hang on in the dark. It was extremely dark as the moon rose late and the Pram track was greasy after the recent rain. Was too amped to go to bed afterwards

Sadly I have to be at work before 8am and i need my beauty sleep, as anyone who has seen me in the flesh will testify!
All these night rides - are you a shift worker by any chance?
Anyone out and about this weekend, weekend is looking fairly busy for me, but if I get the chance I could reorganise a few jobs for a ride...
andy mac
25th February 2011, 20:11
Nope I'm not a shift worker, just been keen to do a night ride in the warm weather.
Rogerh is passing thru Wgtn tonight, so we will do Odlins Rd tomorrow(saturday) leaving the summit carpark at 10.30.

I'm more thinking of heading for the northern rapa back roads.

While up that way I was having a look around for the start of Fingerpost road which is surposed to be a paper road/ farm track between Route 52 and cooks tooth road, but it was getting on a bit in time so I'll have to go and have another look sometime.
I also had a chat with a woman in Akitio who mentioned a track between Akitio and Herbertville through the Akitio Station, she gave me the name of the guy to contact about access. Has anyone been through there at all?

I've been meaning to have a look for that road also. Every time I'm out there, I also run out of time. Looks like you had a good ride. If I'd knowen you were coming this far north, I might have tagged along for a bit.

I've been through a number of times. We were going to go through on the RRRR this year, but they've been doing a lot of logging lately, so it's hard to get access.
Me and Wade (GPSman) went through about a year ago. It's a very well maintained road (better than most of the gravel out that way). Amazing views.

Hi
I'm heading over to Martinborough on Sunday (with Steve and Tony) for a latte at whatever Toppy's is now called,
Aiming to get there about 9.30 and leave around 10ish to go into Sutherlands Hut. Will probably ride up to the start of Cnut hill and then try and get up the snotty hill to the east of the Hut.
Aim to have some sammies for lunch at the hut.
Anyone who wants to come is welcome.

Well, what a day! Most of us have photos and bike cam footage (although mines a bit foggy - will post the best of it soon).
So yeah, I thought I'd have another look at CNUT, and before I knew what was going on I was climbing the f*cker. Got past the worst bits before I cocked up my line and stalled but a few restarts later I was at the top. F*cken stoked. Had a camera on my engine bars so will see if the footage is any good and post it up.
Mark also got his KLR 650 (with panniers!) up.
Stoked. And knackered.

Hi Andy
no - we had the other guys waiting for us down below and time was marching on so we just went up and came back down.
Here's the climb ffom Sutherlands Hut up to the first level - this is reasonably straight forward. - its undedited so you'll have to ignore the boring bits

it probably needs to be pointed out that the track is in the best condition I have ever seen - very few 'deflector rocks from hell'
so if you ever want to join the exclusive 'I've ridden to the top of Cnut Hill and lived' club then now is the time to do it.
I also don't think I would have gotten up without the ex Struan Ex Nordie and now pretty well destroyed Kenda 760 knobbie on the back (at 14 psi)
the Kenda is great off road and a total piece of shit on road
Matt rode a significantly heavier bike up with well worn tyres at normal pressures and he didn't need a push.... sigh
got some great video footage which my son will 'process' for me this evening.

I've marshalled a 3hr cross country (rock and shale), Rainbow/Molesworth, couple of laid back trail rides, a few adv rides and mine are about 1/4 gone.
I don't mind them on the road either.
But then I'm not riding a big bike with panniers carrying emergency latte fixes.
I run them at 18psi with a rimlock and only go to 14psi on the 350 with twin rimlocks.

Here's the vid from my engine bars. Pretty crappy quality as the lens was covered in muck and water. I lost count of the number of times I dropped the bike, I'm amazed I couldn't hear any of my swearing, cos there was a lot of it after about the fourth time I had to lift her back upright.

Just some misc bits of video from the other bits of the ride. Don't know. I took the wheel off and dropped it into the shop. Can't be bothered shagging around with bearings.

The bike had done 7k then, so they must have been the original jobbies. 20k now, so 13k. Not bad. The Naki mud run must have finished them off.

Just did the hub bearing on my DR650 last night, Luckily its a pretty standard size so an NSK sealed bearing was just under $50 from Kapiti bearings.
Suprisingly the original was only sealed on the inside face, and relied on a seperate seal on the outside face. It was very worn, full of crap and poo and totally shagged. I think the more "aggressive" than normal use on the trail ride in april finished it off. Only just got round to fixing it, thankfully only a 30 min job start to finish.
Wheel out, easy removal of bearing, seal and spacers. Quick clean up with CRC and a wipe, like brand new. Meantime bearing in freezer, quick blast on the hub with the blow torch, and the new bearing just dropped in with only a light tap to seat it. Filled the whole deal up with new grease and back on. Easy peasy:yes:
Left me heaps of time to make my new bash plate, Aluminium sponsored by a careless pack up from some roadworks near my house:innocent:
Reflective surface on the outside now so hoping it will catch the oncoming headlights of cars and make me look like I have "neons":yes:Ha ha ha!
I'll look like I'm photocopying the road:shit::facepalm:

I'm off to earn some brownie points now - that new deck aint gonna build itself!
While up that way I was having a look around for the start of Fingerpost road which is surposed to be a paper road/ farm track between Route 52 and cooks tooth road, but it was getting on a bit in time so I'll have to go and have another look sometime.
I found that Fingerpost road yesterday. It felt a bit like trespassing as it's just a shitty farm track. Very greasy at the moment. :gob:
Did the beach section between Blackhead and Pourere. Massive slips all through that area after the rain a month ago. The beach is now blocked in places, but still passable with a little rock hopping.

The track is quite well formed, as if it was a proper road a long time ago. Certainly a summer job on crap tyres. Just like a crappy farm track. Nothing too exciting.
Now the beach at the end of that road, that's a different story... :gob: Hawkes Bay's best kept secret.

Hey Guys,
I’ve been lurking round here soaking up a load of info and asking a few questions of late, and now I’ve finally got to the point of having a License, Gear and a Bike!! Well almost, I get my kit on Wednesday then pick up my bike on Thursday, all going well.
Anyway, now that I have some gear it would be great to get out on some rides, I’ve only just started riding, though I did a bit of off-road riding years ago, I’m not going to be fast but am definitely keen to get out on some rides. If you’re heading out on a ride and think a novice on a KLX250 might make the cut it would be awesome if I could tag along!!

Haha, after 2 London winters as a m/c courier riding a minimum of 10 hours a day through 2 months of sleet and snow each winter I've done more snow miles than you've had hot dinners.
But actually it's been quite mild here but has rained a fair bit. I don't mind cold but I'd rather not do the rain unless there's a good excuse.

Heya Mike, welcome bro! I learnt to ride on a DR 250 around Wellington and remember how much fun it was. I envy you!
I might be up for a ride this weekend or next - just depends on whether I'm going out bush with a mate, but I'm baching it so time is my own. Rain hail or shine, I'll ride.
Got a near bald D606 on the back of my big bike so I'm pretty sure you wont be slowing me down!

Anyway, buggsubique, I'd be keen to get out for a ride on the 22/23rd if you're keen. As for what sort of riding, not sure what you're meaning, definitely some offroad, probably not huge distance first time out, and not too extreme, but yeah, how hard can it be to keep up with a big bike and a bald tyre?? hahaha

Speaking of which, I still need to go get another front brake lever to carry as a spare after Stormtrooper took us up that Thompsons Track ride over the hill....and some abs glue for my RH front fairing... Dang old school big bikes.
Mike, we can go into the Akatarawas (bit wet & greasy but doable unless you're a latte drinker), or we can go down the south coast (on a sat) but its sand and salt. If you want to go further abroad we can go over to Sutherlands hut over past Martinbro on the Saturday morning. I'd prolly stay tho so I could have a sniff around with the rifle depending on the weather.
So yeh, sand & salt, water & clay, or bit of mud & rock, OTY, but all good fun. Prolly Akatawaras is best bet - close, not too hard out.

12th July 2011, 20:32
Hi Mikeonabike,
I would recommend the ride up to the akatarawa summit - cool river crossing now the bridge is removed! -ignore the road closed signs!
Once at the summit, turn right up the rocky, snotty but mercifully short hill and follow your nose to the hut. This is the best wet weather ride IMHO. not too muddy, no big water crossings, but watch out for the wind!
Sadly not free on the 22/23 but could be this weekend...
Or just head into the playground that is the Mungatuk's

Akatarawa sounds like a good start, real keen for a ride up there in on the 22/23rd, luckily I'm not a latte drinker, haha.
I'm off to get my new (to me) bike tomorrow, but am away this weekend so although I only don't get to ride on the weekend the ride from Nelson to Picton should be an alright intro.
So any one care to point out the Akatarawa summit on google earth?

Well that was awesome!
Mike had good skills and by the time we had done Rimu Rd (new to me) up to Hydro Saddle and the Hydro loop he was on fire...infact he only stopped cos his fang-free minutes ran out and he had to lay it down in the clay.
Took the Africa down some bitchin mean steep bit (that side track after the initial climb up Pram track from the river on the Kpoti side). Good to have Mike on hand to help lift the bike upright again, ha. Not often I get gas pissing out the top of my tank...
Hutt 4x4 club was in there today and having a ball...of course that translates to harder work for a bike to get through their 8 vehicle bog... Some muppet in a surf goes "shouldn't be bringing a road bike through here mate!" "Fuck you" was the reply. roadbike my arse.
Oh, and you can get awesome cell ph reception from Hydro Saddle (Rimu Rd)...enough to go online to google maps and see where the hell you are!

His bike lost its spark and we ran out of daylight (and ideas) trying to fix it so I towed him to the Lake Ferry Pub and gave him a lift to Featherston. He wasn't game to come over the hill with me - not sure if it was my riding or the lack of pillion foot pegs that put him off.....

That must have been some tow, there was enough soft sand heading back to have made that rough on the towing bike and both riders............ How is your clutch?
I hope it was not the legendary "con rod knocked the magneto off" type of electrical failure! I used to keep a laminated wiring diagram rolled up inside the top frame tube when using a 1981 G/S for serious Adventure riding, although as a result of practice (!) I was familiar enough with a 1980's BMW schematic to know what most important circuits were connected to.
But, ceasing to proceed aside, it was indeed a great day. Kudos the Steven (!) for initiating the proceedings.

Mark_S (KLR 650), Pampa (DR 350), EddieB & Nic (Pillion - brave on a DR 650) & I (R100GS) left Caltex Rimutaka's at 9.00am Sunday. Fine but cold for the crossing, damp roads & given the recent snow the possibility of pee gravel on some corners.
Coffee at Cornocopia in Featherston, then to Ocean Beach.
Whilst I'd ridden to Ocean Beach before I'd never followed the beach road to its conclusion - locked gates. Its now firmly on my list of 'must go again' rides. It's brilliant out there on a still fine day. Plenty to interest an Adventure rider. Gravel, hard packed, small stream crossings, a little soft sand (manageable), brilliant views. And a couple of dead seals in the stream at the end just for that 'you wouldn't find this anywhere else' appeal.

Backtracked, then over to the Lake Ferry Hotel for lunch (I could not recommend the Nachos or Wedges).
We decided to do the beach tracks to Whangimoana.
But not too far in the BMW stalled. Got it started again, but it soon shut down again. Symptoms were perplexing. Mark_S came back & helped me out, but eventually we decided that it wasn't fixable & he towed me out thru the soft sand & lumpy spinifex, back to the Lake Ferry Hotel, where the bike is currently residing.
Mark kindly offered a ride to Featherston (KLR - no pillion pegs), with an intent that I would get the train or bus from there. I politely declined the ride over the Rimutaka's - the ride to Featherston was adventerous enough for me). Unfortunately I'd already missed the train (& the buses only run around the train timetable), so I was somewhat stuck for the night.
EddieB & Nic gave me a text, just as I was about to find a motel for the night, & so I got a ride back home (in the car) after we had dinner at the Royal Hotel.
Really appreciate all the assistance guys.
Today I'll get the car fixed (cracked the radiator Saturday afternoon), then take a drive across to Lake Ferry to recover the bike.

I was in town on the Vespa this afternoon. Heading home the rain turned to sleet and near Wadestown steady snow. Getting down the hill to my street and then down this steep and lightly used road involved care! The thing about a Vespa is that a simple fall does very expensive to fix damage, it is a steel monocoque construction so a dent in the body is the same as a dent in a car, it has to be panel beaten out. So not the ideal adventure machine if you want to keep it looking smart.
Only two things that stop me using it are GALE winds and any form of frozen water, this time I got caught out, not knowing it was snowing at home.
Road is covered in slushy snow in picture, which then began to build up into snow and ice and become pretty slippery so glad I got home when I did.

Well, finished some Uni work off, filled the refurbed front brakes and packed a few things onto the bike and into the bag...
I was hoping I might get through to Hydro Saddle, but it very quickly became apparent that wasn't going to happen...
I packed my mid sized Husky on the bike with its fill of gas and bar oil, chucked a folding shovel into the backpack and off I went. There was heaps of branches and bushes over the track which made is slow going and then the rear end kicked around on me crossing a small tree on the track. Skull-dragged the bike sideways out of that one, and kept going. Down thru the first stream crossing was fine but things really started to get crowded on the track after that. Pushed through for another couple hundred metres but then had to rip the husky into life to get through a rock/tree slide...and another one...and another one.
Basically I burnt a tank of gas over four clearance jobs...giving me a paltry 2-300m distance gained. Total trip: ~25km return over a couple of hours (hard hours!). Didn't expect to find it in such a bad way, so next time I'll take more gas and allow more time.
Can't win all the time eh?

Get an electric chainsaw and 20 batteries
Most stuff I'd get out the chainsaw for, I now use the pruning saw.
It's cool when you do all the work and can get through.

But I'd need to get another charger.

Tony and I are meeting at 10.30 at the Waikanae coffee kiosk and heading up to Odlins Rd then through to Staglands for lunch and then (provided Bugs has cleared the entrance) in at Karapoti and up to the start of the Rock Garden.
All are welcome to join us but be warned that both tracks are at the challenging end of the spectrum.

Nice vid, Mark...I can relate to your difficulties. Had to abandon the AT half way along that pylon track that you climb up to from Featherston... me and a mate went 2 up on his XLR 250 to get through to the end of the track overlooking Kaitoke/Pakuratahi. Had to recover my son's mountain bike from yesterday. I'm f*cked from the last three days. Its been awesome.

this was my first real experience riding in snow. I learnt 3 things..
1/ Its utterly knackering
2/ its great fun
3/ an E07 is way out of its 'happy place'
we only got half way to the top car park. We simply reached a point where the distanced gained versus energy consumed became unsustainable (polite way of saying that I'm not fit enough).
where we gave up

The Akatarawa Rd is also totally rooted - 20-30 trees down and crap all over the place. You can get past the 2 closed bridges easily enough which meant we could recover at the Staglands Café
a great day to be out on a bike

Could I get a volunteer to check out an XT225 in Upper Hutt?

Which my friend Jac is now interested in. Would someone be willing to take a look at it for her? Please? :innocent:

I might be able to go see it this weekend, Buggs is up that way also, speaking of which, I need to pick up a set of handlebars I left at his place also.
If you did a deal I could probably fit it in the garage for a little while if needed.

[QUOTE=Rosie;1130130996]I'm going to be working in Lower Hutt during the last three weeks of September, and I'm allowed to bring my two-wheeled "research assistant" in the back of the work van :scooter:
Clint will probably come down the weekend of the 17th/18th, and we're keen to do some exploring locally, so would appreciate a few tour guides for the weekend. /QUOTE]
To kick things off I suggest on Saturday riding Odlins Rd on the saddle of the Akatarawa /Waikanae Rd. It's 20km into the hut on a rock based track. There is probably still some snowfall damage so we best take some saws to clear the track.

Hey Andy,
Sorry about going a bit quiet on this, we've been having some trouble getting equipment sorted out for my trip, so the dates have been up in the air a bit. I'm now traveling down to Wellington this coming Sunday, and will be in town during the following weekend (24th, 25th). Clint won't be coming to visit me :weep: because we'll be meeting up in Whangamomona the weekend after that
So I would be keen for a day ride or two on the weekend of the 24th, if you, or anyone else is keen. Nothing really technical though, I ride like a girl

OK Rosie, I'm still intending to do Odlins Rd on the 17th so will report back on the track condition.
On the 25th is the Totara Park trail ride which can be a greasy mudfest - think Naki Nutters Liquidfication Tour. For bonus points it goes thru the Rallywoods 4wd training area. The first time I went on Trailwings and managed just one lap, now 2 years later I do multiple laps, B loops and sometimes A :shit:
I lurve my little WRR :scooter:

I'm probably ok for a day ride to some Wairarapa gravel roads on Sunday 25th, the 24th is out for me as i have my son's Birthday party that evening.
How many km's are you interested in covering? I'll try to post a couple of maps up later this evening with some options.
Anyone else interested in a gravel ride Sunday 25th?
Cheers

Possibly, depending on depth of gravel :shit:, location (start point etc) and whether my ordered bits arrive from US.

Wairarapa sounds like a plan. I've never taken a bike over the Rimutaka's, so that needs to get crossed off my list while I am in the area.
300-ish k's would be a good distance. I look forward to seeing some maps with route options

Most of the routes probably end up at about 350-400km return from Wellington, although any of them can altered to suit weather conditions/ places of interest etc.
Route 1 http://g.co/maps/um9h8
takes in Hinakura-Admirals Hill, and Homewood road out towards Riversdale ( I seem to remember you doing the pukumanu Adv ride? so you might of covered most of that area.
route 2 http://g.co/maps/hb897
More coastal route, takes in Ocean beach,(little bit of easy sandy track) Lake ferry for a feed and out to Cape palliser (may be seals out that way) ans A little Gravel diverson on the way back to Martinbrough. probably the least amount of gravel in this option, but good scenery
Option 3 http://g.co/maps/3bmjc
head straight to Masterton, then via a varity of roads head to Akito, and back out to Waihi Falls, before heading home. probably the longest route, at a guess about 400-450km from Wellington.
also open to other ideas

:wings:Oooo, oooo, lets do Ocean Beach. I know we have just been there a few months ago, but I didn't complete that ride. I really liked what I did though...It has it all - a bit more interesting than just gravel roads, but not hard riding, scenic, etc etc. Ask Nic about it Rosie..

Okay, Andy Mac, me, and another are going to pop my cherry re Odlins Rd - I've never been there. He assures me that my worn E09 won't be an issue. Meeting at 10.00am at Rimutex. Anyone else keen? Metservice says it'll be fine. Andy tells me its a rocky base, so the wet weather we've had shouldn't impact. And I'm ready for another ride :woohoo:
