good to hear you made it home ok. once we were under way again, Mark got in the way of Steve's wall of death routine and so Steve had to limp home. Mark escorted him out leaving Andy and I to continue. 7 started and only 2 of us reached the hut. Not the best stats. Mark came back in and we finished a great ride. Thanks again Andy.

Just made it back from A&E. Broken some ribs & have some fluid (probably blood) around the left lung. They decided that they weren't going to stab me with a bloody big needle to draw that out after I broke down & pleaded pitifully with them. That needle belongs at the vets, not a hospital...So I'm home now :niceone: I'll do a ride report in a bit

Ow. If you recall, my last trip up Odlins to the hut ended up with cracked or broken ribs. As usual I did not determine it was more than just severe bruising until late in the evening, waking up feeling sick, so I got to sit around in A+E until about 0500.
My doctor's advice was to simply stop breathing for about three days and the lack of movement would allow the ribs to knit. Stay breathing and we are talking a month or two...............
As I recall somebody that ride went way up a bank and got stuck (what goes up does not always come down, immediately).
End of that track looking a bit more challenging now.

Welcome to the world of pain, nothing a few months wont fix, actually those broken ribs hurt like sh-t for a few weeks before they start to get better even now I still feel mine. I said I would stay off the bike for 6 months so only a couple more to go.

One thing I noted when i was last in there, on the longest descent into a stream where you come down the hill with a slight S bend into the stream and once across the stream go about 30 metres on the flat before crossing over again. Just before the right hand bend into the stream someone has cut a trail along the bank to where you cross back over.
You can see it at 6'25" - 6'27" and the other end at 10'13" - 10'20" in this

Took the R80GS and Debbie on the 2013 Yamaha Safari over the last week.
At and after the "North Island Invasion of the South" we have talked about finishing off the exploratory reconnaissance we made from Iron Bridge and New Creek to the Mackley River and pushing on to Denniston. We did just that on Saturday afternoon.
Being two up on a big BMW we - and others in the same situation - almost bailed at the steep descent into the Mackley but I applied the "you are either growing or shrinking" motto and decided to go outside my comfort zone. As I had done this to a fairly extreme level the previous day (think Mark S's play areas in the Akatarawa’s) my energy levels were a bit depleted, however I knew that with a decent group of big bikes you can tackle many things by working as a team.
To cut a long story short, we made it, the weather was perfect and the ride is well worth it.
Three pictures show my friend Craig and helpers getting his R100GSPD across the Mackley River, coal measures along the track and a section of round river rocks on one part of the road. This was the last challenge and it was all clear sailing after that. Some very steep and sustained climbs with endless hairpin turns which are quite a challenge two up on a big bike but the R80GS is brilliant. First time I have had it in serious rough going. Its gearing is lower than the 1000 and the engine is smoother and more flexible down low. Good to be back on a 2 valve GS again.
So those Wellington guys thinking about it, this is both doable and a brilliant ride. The caution is it is totally dependent on the river crossing. If the river is up it is not sensible and it goes up (and down) very quickly.
Regards,
Michael

well done - nice little report and pics - made me envious

14th January 2013, 13:03
This is why I was initially a little hesitant about committing to the (possibly one way) slope before the Mackley. Selected the trail option down from Big River the day before, thinking I would just walk the bike down the steepest part. The steep part was of such length and angle that getting a large bike down was a multi-person operation at the pinch points. Me, my brand new riding suit and the bike were a little muddy and sweaty a couple of hours later! Debbie did a lot of walking. The steepest steep bit was such that she fell over walking!
It never ceases to surprise me how deep a rut a flat twin can manage but the one at the very end of the tough middle section jammed it completely (the picture with people helping to get it going downhill again). At least you cannot fall off with the bike wedged.
A bit overwhelming at the time but a real feeling of satisfaction recovering beside the State Highway and feeling grateful to those who helped. 5 minutes over the Reefton Saddle or 3 hours by the "short way"!

And here is a very wet Maruia Saddle on Day 1. This is a public gravel road, normally a very scenic easy manicured gravel ride, but was closed that day due to the rain,. However the FH Maintenance guy in Murchison said it was OK for bikes. I don't think bridges are meant to work like that!
The flooded straight and flat road is West Bank Road (on the way to Springs Jct) and the Maruia River has overtopped its stop bank. Quite deep and long wet but the R80 chugged through. Not so the two DRZ-400's in the picture (I showed the guys how to do the breather modification that removes this tendancy for this model to stall in deep water) or our friend's Ken and Maria's HP-2. These have an exposed low air intake and this is the second time it has taken a lung full and stopped, but no lasting damage (this time) except for some residual water to turn to steam after draining the majority. Modification coming though!
I don't particularly enjoy getting wet but the rain turned an easy ride into something requiring satisfying effort and made for some very moddy effects. This is I imagine why we do this.

Michael

Hi Michael, thanks for the RR. Has made me envious. Looks like you had a challenging ride (those are usually the ones you remember fondly) without the issues you have suffered in the past with the Dakar. How is Debbie liking the switch back to the Airhead GS?

Hi How is Debbie liking the switch back to the Airhead GS?
Our 650 Dakars set a high standard for pillions in the "adventure" field and this is what she judges the R80 against. She is pretty pleased with it but it needs better hand grips and lower foor pegs. The Dakar had very substantial side handles in jist the right place for hands to drop easily to them. Also a help when manhandling the bike! She also finds the pillion pegs a bit higher than ideal. Both these things can be fixed by modification and I plan to scheme things up. Much, much better than our R80G/S was however, that was just too small and short to be comfortable on the back.
Yes this was a geat ride because of the challenges successfully taken on.
Sorry to be torturing you while you remain in your semi-mobile position.

I'm good with living vicariously at present...
Here's what I was originally going to do. The side handles need to sweep forward a little more though. The stock bar gets lost with luggage.

Thanks for that.
I have previously ridden over the Maruia Saddle in good weather so I am scoring this alternative experience as a positive one! It was so wet it made the place really atmospheric.
Denniston was sky blue and calm perfect, with clouds only arriving (coming in from the sea) when we reached our destination at the old incline, followed by a few spots of water and then rain after Westport. One of the reasons that made me decide to push on - how often do you get to be there and in this weather?

Any enthusiasm amongst any of the Wellington (or Nelson lurkers) crew for an expedition to the Clarence reserve in the next couple of weeks.
Dates coming up are 26/27 January and 2/3 February (and 9/10 February but I am road riding that weekend so out - for me)
This is a fair weather only route - but big bike suitable when the weather is fair - so I would be making the call to go only when it was clear that the coming Saturday or Sunday was going to be fine.
Last years page has not been updated but I confirmed the 2012/13 dates with the DOC area office.

Hi folks ,thought I'd introduce myself in here .I'm based in Welly and just bought a road legal DRZ400 to get into adventure riding . Iv'e little experience on the loose stuff but have ridden on the hard stuff for the last 10years. After My first little outing yesterday i'm quickly realizing it's a totally different kettle of fish . I guess the only thing to do is get out there as much as i can and build the confidence.
Apart from the south coast and red rocks area i've no real clue where to go so would love to come on some of your rideouts to gain some much needed experience and meet some good people.
I'm a 30 something foul mouthed Irishman who enjoys a beer or 12 ,a good laugh and a bit of banter so hopefully i'll fit in :D
chomping at the bit seeing the pics of your days out :gob:

Hi all,
I thought I'd jump on the bandwagon and introduce myself too. I live in the lower of the two Hutts and ride a Honda CRF230L. I have been riding for a number of years and have a small amount of experience off road but could probably do with some people showing me where the good rides are! And helping out if I get into trouble... anyway, I just thought I'd introduce myself so if you see me reply to a post about a ride then it doesn't come completely out of the blue.
Cheers!

the area around red rocks is nice and accessible from wellington, for sure. there's also all sorts of group rides, and these occur pretty frequently (there's one out at boomrock on feb 25th, which i may attempt)
my plan is to try get out whenever i can, even if it's just to the south coast, as it seems like PRACTISE is the main thing :)

There's Akatarawas, Avro Road, some random places just past the Takas, the endure track just past Brooklyn, etc. Quite a few places, not even including the organised rides. Im always up for a ride if you're keen for a fang on any of the above, and we can drag aimee along given she's my other half :)

I'd be keen on checking these out too. Have done Red Rocks a lot lately seeing it's so close to home so am up for something new but local. I was aspiring to do an Ocean Beach trip with EddieB one day but having just gone to the top of the Rimutaka's yesterday for an explore, I'm not sure I'm up for anything longer than that without getting a new seat for the WR. I must be getting old...
Aimee, I searched for that Boom Rock ride on the 25th you mentioned. Found one for the 24th but seems to have been cancelled. Might not be the same event however.
Anyhoo, I need to keep my eye on this thread more often it seems, would have enjoyed a trip to Wainui beach.
I attach a pic from Red Rocks, circa 5.30pm on a stunning evening 2 weeks ago... we've had a few recently!

Checked out the end of Avro Road yesterday, thanks denefoster for the tip. There's a big 'no entry' sign on the gate but a big enough 'go around' track to suggest no one pays any attention. Looks like quad bikes had been there recently judging by the amount of fresh, closer together skid marks there were on practically every corner. Met a nice guy and his kid going for a ride too. All in all, a nice spot for some dirt practice.

I'm keen but all booked up with family tomorrow.... Keep this thread up to date incase my plans change though. If you guys are novices I would just head in from the karopoti entrance and follow your nose to the first big river crossing; shallow but long, then head up the hill on the pram track and keep going til you hit perhams road and finish up at the mangakutukutuku entrance near paraparaumu. Take it easy though as it'll be busy in there tomorrow, and meeting a quad going full tilt head on wouldn't be fun:-(

Following Gav's route at the bottom of the Pram track (2k downhill with small stream at bottom) you are approx half way thru.
If you want to add an extra loop, go 100m turn left, ride 100m downstream and you will be on Rimu Rd. Turn right at 2 intersections, ends at Orange hut.
Tyres at 15psi, stay to the left and have fun.

then a guy on a klx 450 came along and pissed up it no probs ..bastard ha ha ....

i'm having power issues so i'll probably sit it out till i get it sorted ....power drops off just about every time i really need it ..then kicks back in and tries to f**k me off the bike ...(did on one occasion on the weekend). river crossings, dips , hill climbs :brick:

If you are keen to ride, gather at Caltex Rimutakas at 8.30am. The Wairarapa side is supposed to be sunny - the Manawatu side not so much. Ride back will depend on who joins me.

Got the chance to get out Red Rocks way yesterday... business closures due to earthquakes sometimes have their uses... It's definitely a more challenging ride now, with longer stretches of deeper sand and lose rocks than before, but other sections are now easier, smoothed out and less slippery. So all in all, I think it's more challenging, but a better practice area. It's like a whole different ride.

I started off the day leaving home around 10:30am and taking a look at a track on the western side of the Rimutakas. It only went for a couple hundred metres before I came across a gate.
http://youtu.be/oHDmxxd_BAE
Went down a couple more roads which yielded nothing so I decided to head to Waikawa beach just north of Otaki. So off I went through the Akatarawa's stopping at the summit for a quick picture before carrying on to Waikawa.
http://goo.gl/mV8KKu
I had checked the tides earlier and I arrived about an hour before low tide so there was plenty of sand to ride on. I came across a couple of 4 wheelers, motorbikes and some horses but for the most part I had the beach to myself. On the first run I just headed south (horses north of Waikawa Beach) to see how far I could go and after crossing a couple of streams I saw a beach access road so popped up to see if I could figure out where I was. A sign read "Otaki Beach" and had a picture of a motorcycle under it with a red circle and a line going through it. The fine for riding a motorcycle on any Kapiti Coast beach is $750 so I jumped back onto the beach and headed back north to the Horowhenua District where it is fine to operate any legal vehicle on the beach. Stopped halfway along the beach for some lunch before getting back on the bike and doing some laps up and down the beach.
http://youtu.be/rJ8gFvKw4aw
I practised doing small wheelies to get the front wheel over some driftwood and a small bank a stream had cut into the sand which was scary, disappointing and fun all at the same time.
http://goo.gl/0gbLyc
I noticed it was looking like rain soon so I had one more blast along the beach and started heading back towards home. I ended up taking a look down Otaki Gorge road which turned to a gravel a few kilometres in. The gravel was made up of large bits of broken up rock which made for interesting riding as the bike would try to slide across the top of the rocks as I cornered.
http://goo.gl/2VG0is
Along the way I came across my old nemesis (a suspension bridge). This one was fairly low so I did not get jelly legs like the one at the Pillars of Hercules near Rangipo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fby8Cav_UPU).
http://goo.gl/crzXGg
http://goo.gl/W7na5m
Carried on to the end of the road then turned around and headed back out. Found a neat little track down a steep hill which went down to the river. I was a little apprehensive about climbing back out but it was unfounded as I got out easily.
http://goo.gl/cY0Vd2
http://goo.gl/iq9n1k
Popped across a suspension bridge on my bike for a quick photo then carried on heading out to Old Hautere Road and back on to SH1.
http://goo.gl/kPTu43
Shot back through Akatarawa Road and stopped off at Clouston Park for a few more photos before heading back home.
http://goo.gl/RDemvT

I thoroughly enjoyed the ride although my butt was protesting the absence of my Airhawk cushion towards the end of the day.

Maybe a group ride might actually happen soon...

Good to see Kiwibiker wellington ride outs haven't stopped completely! Thanks for posting guys.

Obviously a sign of getting old when time flies.
I must say that the Winter in the greater Wellington area has been pretty mild. It sounds like a great idea for some Wellington riders to get out and about. I'm a bit knackered with work for the next couple of weekends but should be clear after that.
Are you thinking of doing the cape to cape Gavin? Mark and Steve seem to be up for it and hopefully myself as well. You could be our official French translator.
Cheers

Saturday's ride I headed out to Red Rocks and there's new signage up that says 4WD vehicles only. It doesn't expressly forbid motorcycles so I'm guessing that's more to discourage muppets taking their mothers Civic for a spot of off roading. What it also says however, is that only vehicles with current WoF and reg are allowed.
On sunday I went out to Avro Road and ran into a nice man and woman with about 7 retrievers in tow. He waved me down and said he was the landowner, asked if I knew it was private property. I said I'd heard such rumours but it seemed generally accepted to ride there. It's not, and sounds like it'll be getting harder to get in. He mentioned a trail biker getting killed in there some years back when they ran into a logging truck... I said I ride a lot slower than the average trail bike rider to which they both replied, "Yes, I noticed". Hmm... I'm sure that's a compliment under the circumstances.
Anyhoo, I offered to turn around and he said I should enjoy my ride but make it my last so I rode all the way down to the locked gate, turned around but couldn't get back up due to the boggy surface of pine needles on muddy clay... After 45 mins of effort, and in turn flattening the battery, I backed it down, turned around, crash started and headed back to the gate. After a few minutes a car load of locals turned up and offered to assist in lifting the bike over the gate. Perfect timing, great chaps.
I won't ride anywhere I've been expressly asked not to, so that's another area off my list now sadly. Was a good send off though.

It's a pity really, with such few off road spots about the place. It's not a huge area by any stretch but it was fun and it was local. With a bit of thought and planning, I'm sure the owner could come to some mutually beneficial terms for access, but as it stands he said he's copped abuse from quite a few riders which hasn't helped matters. I can't help but feel again that a minority has ruined it for the rest of us.

I went in there on Saturday and the flat area is filled with logs. I started heading further down but turned around because of the greasiness and lack of traction with the trailwings.

Access through from white rock isn't too difficult to obtain. I managed it a few years back, give the doc office a call in masterton (or maybe martinborough ?) they'll give you permission and a key for their vehicle access gate at cape palliser end ( and a key bond - $20 from memory ), and also a contact number for the Maori land owners and the station manager at the white rock end.
None of them have any issues with small groups of sensible people (shhh-- don't tell em;)) on road legal dual purpose bikes, and the station manager has to unlock 2 gates and ride through the station with you on his quad so he takes $10 a rider for his troubles! The Maori landowners are the least hassle, no gates, no $, no problem if they know you're going.
Looks like I may have just volunteered to organise a ride...

Kia Ora Koutou,
We have a couple of rides this weekend. Today there is a quick ride out starting from Owhiro Bay then heading out to Devils Gate. For those who don't mind paying the $20 access fee, we will then be heading up to Long Gully and riding around in there. See HERE (https://www.facebook.com/events/1408653336028737/) for the event on the Facebook.
Tomorrow I am planning to have a nice easy ride out to Cape Palliser via Lake Ferry (stopping there for a quick bite/drink). We will be departing from Rimutex at around 10am. HERE (https://www.facebook.com/events/606760262701163/)is the link to the event.
Todd (Motomart) has organised a ride on the 29th of September. HERE (https://www.facebook.com/events/503350003089486/)is the link, and details are as follows:
It’s on sun 29th sept and weather permitting we’re going to Glendhu then returning via Admiral Road to Gladstone for lunch.
Meeting at Motomart sun morning at 9am, departing at 9.30 and heading to Martinborough, then out to Glendhu.
This is a fantastic ride with some great scenery, however we’ll only do it if the weather is good
If its wet we’re still going but we’ll go to Flat Point which is a little easier in the rain.
So regardless of the weather we have an option and the more the merrier.
Look forward to catching up and letting you shout me a beer, boy I’m a nice guy.
Don’t forget to save a couple of days holiday for our feb 2014 Ken Lilley Memorial ride, which will be in Feb 2014.
Finally, I have organised and Adventure Riding Coaching Session with Andrew Templeton. It is pencilled in for the 27th of October. This is aimed at newcomers to the sport of Adventure Riding and will be split into Theory and Practical. It is being held at Maungakotukutuku. The group size is limited to between 6-8 participants and will cost $200 pp. See HERE (https://www.facebook.com/events/210174105810155/) for the event page and what will be covered in the session.

It was fairly straight forward last time I was there (a couple of months ago). A bit of loose rock on the surface, but no drama. Past the hut it gets a little more difficult. I wouldn’t do solo, but no drama in a group.
You’d get blowen off the ridge up there today. There’s a reason the vegetation only grows about waste high. Very exposed, so consider the weather forecast carefully before going if you’re making a special trip.

Probably meet Manuakau.KTM at the Clarence. Home Sunday via the Molesworth, on the 7.00pm sailing.
Anyone interested in hooking up, let me know..

Only free day for me is Sunday, possibly saturday but not very likely. Chuck us the details of the Molesworth excursion on Sunday and I,ll see whether its do-able to join you. Will be a good chance to test the GS on gravelly stuff.

I may be misunderstanding Mark's (aka Waihou Thumper) comment above
Not sure whether he's suggesting as a Beemer enthusiast and card carrying member of the BMWOR - taking the GS up Takapari Road is the logical loyal choice - or maybe, and okay I may be being overly sensitive here :) he's suggesting riding up Takapari Road versus taking part in an overnighter to the Bay with other register members is a no brainer (pipe and slippers image some us project :) )
Either way - I enjoy the diversity of folks riding different marque of machine that this site and ADVRider encourage
As current Area Coordinator for the Wellington Branch of the BMWOR - I'm keen to encourage a more diverse range of folk (especially sub 60 yr olds) being attracted to take part - myself, I'm already one of the old farts
Cheers all - and especially to Mark aka Waihou Thumper

Don't worry Steve, Mark's just jealous. The BMWOR wouldn't let him join because they new he would only keep his BMW for 5 minutes then it would be for sale.
Do you still own it Mark !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have a good ride sorry I can't join you need to get a bike out of the shed and get it Rego.
Are you going to the RAG (top secret BMWOR thing) for everyone.

Hi Gerard - yip planning on going to the RAG (intending to tent) coming South from Pureora Forest Park where I plan to spend Friday night with several other BMW riders - I may be on my DR because Back Road Riders are planning on doing Fishers and the 42nd on Sunday 6 April
Mark - aka Waihou Thumper - you'd be welcome to these events - BMW not mandatory

I was merely stating, that with a BMW, nice bike and all that, taking it the distance, you would be more comfortable and suited to this rather than the DR.
Nothing to do with the stereotypical comments that some may make regarding BMW riders/owners...
It looks as though you took the DR, so whichever way it turns/turned out I am sure you had a great time....:) Enjoy!

The Pukemanu ride did this section (going the other way) so if you are able to contact the Pukemanu organisers they may be able to help.
Pretty rocky track but quite do-able on big adventure bikes.
